    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: To describe the meaning of significant others in relation to participation in everyday life of persons with early diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Materials and methods: Fifty-nine persons participated in this interview study. Inclusion criteria were three years experience of diagnosis and being of working age. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using critical incident technique (CIT), and the material was analysed using content analysis. Results: Four categories were revealed: (1) My early RA causes activity adaptations for us all, referring to the person and significant others modifying activities. (2) Making the significant others balance between shortfalls and participation, where the participants distinguished between needing help and feeling involved in activities. (3) Physical interactions with significant others, referring to both the problematic and manageable impact RA could have on body contact. (4) Emotions in relation to activities with others, where participants described feelings of failing others, and anxiety about future activities. Conclusions: For persons with early diagnosed RA, significant others can be both hindering and facilitating for participation in everyday life. As a clinical implication, it is valuable to identify how significant others can be involved in the rehabilitation process, to enhance participation in everyday life early in the disease process.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis is to examine what residents’ community participation by way of local night patrol for social reassurance and community meetings in a “deprived neighborhood” has to say about integration. Through ethnographic field study and participant observation the study aims to capture the participants’ perspective of the participation, examine what impact the engagement has on the local community as well as what the affects and participation has to say about integration. The empirical material is analyzed and discussed from the basis of relevant theories of community, social boundaries, social reassurance as well as structural respectively social integration. The engagement of the residents aims to increase the feeling of social security and reassurance in the local community, and parallelly it creates forum for language practice and social encounters that goes beyond social and ethnic boundaries. The increasement of personal relationships seems to indirectly lead to a higher level of social reassurance as well as a feeling of solidarity in the community. Structural factors on a macro level, however, seems to work as barriers for the residents’ participation and involvement in a general societal and national fellowship and community.

    I denna bok söker vi samla idéer och tankar från olika tidsepoker för att formulera en socialpedagogik för framtiden. För att de idéer som historiskt formulerats om socialpedagogiken ska vara användbara måste de förstås utifrån och kopplas till den nutida situationen. Boken tecknar en aktuell bild av socialpedagogisk verksamhet och forskning i Sverige, kompletterad med internationella utblickar.

    Socialpedagogiken och socialpedagogerna verkar i ett samhälle som är statt i förändring. Det gör att socialpedagoger i allt högre utsträckning än förr möter grupper av människor som befinner sig på andra samhällsarenor och i förändrade livssituationer. Detta ger upphov till och ett behov av att beskriva och förstå socialpedagogik på ett förändrat och fördjupat sätt. En ambition med boken är att skapa en förståelse för socialpedagogik och dess kopplingar till människors lärande. Detta sätt att tänka kring socialpedagogik ger en bra grund för den som vill utveckla ett socialpedagogiskt tänkande och förhållningssätt. Boken lyfter fram det socialpedagogiska perspektivets styrkor i dagens och morgondagens välfärdsarbete och ger en ram för det som benämns socialpedagogisk bildning.

    Boken vänder sig i första hand till studerande på socialpedagogiska högskoleutbildningar, men även till studenter på socionomprogram och lärarprogram. Boken kan med fördel läsas på avancerad nivå och forskarnivå, men även av studenter på grundnivå.

    Abstract [en]

    The article scrutinises a specific intervention for crime prevention through education, launched in one municipality of Sweden, in regard to how such education is set-up, the motives for initiating such education, and the kind of subject that such education is about to produce. Influenced by Michel Foucaults thought on governing, the article is based on interviews with actors involved in establishing principles for security and carrying out specific interventions at school. The analysis illustrates what could be characterised as a will to activate in the intervention in focus, that is, a particular form of governing mobilising the students motivation and will to make active choices and active standpoints - in the name of freedom, responsibility, and security.

    Abstract [sv]

    A decade ago, major public health differences between two neighboring, equal sized large Swedish cities, Norrköping and Linköping (»the Twin cities«) were revealed. These differences were considerable for cardiovascular mortality and life expectancy. An important finding was that cardiovascular mortality rates for men and women in the city of Norrköping were highest compared to other major Swedish cities. In this follow-up, a decade later, cardiovascular mortality rates are still highest for the Norrköping population in comparison to the largest Swedish cities. There are also still profound and major public health differences between these twin cities. The differences seem to persist over time. These differences could not be explained by differences in health care, but are rather reflecting different social history and socioeconomic and life style differences in these two cities.

    Changing trends in measles vaccination status between 2004 and 2014 among children aged 12-23 months in Bangladesh2020In: Tropical medicine & international health, ISSN 1360-2276, E-ISSN 1365-3156Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Objective To assess the current measles vaccination status in Bangladesh, explain changing differentials in measles vaccination, and determine contexts that may improve measles vaccination coverage. Methods Secondary data analysis of datasets (2004-2014) from the nationally representative Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys that followed stratified, multi-stage cluster sampling design conducted both in urban and rural contexts. Results 5468 children aged 12-23 months were surveyed, of whom 892 (16%) reported non-compliance to measles vaccine. After simultaneous adjusting for covariates in multivariate logistic regression, children who came from a poor socio-economic background, who had mothers with no formal schooling, who were underweight, of higher birth order (amp;gt;= 4), who had adolescent mothers, who had a history of home delivery and who had no exposure to media were observed to be significantly associated with lack of measles vaccination. Measles vaccination coverage among children of adolescent mothers was consistently low. Despite lack of media exposure, measles vaccination status gradually increased from 26% in 2004 to 33% in 2014. Lack of maternal education was no longer associated with measles vaccination status in 2007, 2011 and 2014. Stunted children continued to be associated with lack of measles immunisation in 2014. Children with higher birth order demonstrated 53% excess risk for not being immunised with measles vaccine. Mothers with no exposure to mass media were two times more likely to have children without measles immunisation as indicated by BDHS 2014 data. Conclusions Our findings will help policy makers formulate strategies for expanding measles vaccination coverage in order to achieve further reduction in disease burden and mortality in Bangladesh.

    Ectopia Cordis: 6-Year Survival without Surgical Correction2020In: FETAL AND PEDIATRIC PATHOLOGY, ISSN 1551-3815Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background: Ectopia cordis is a complete or partial extrusion of the heart through a ventral defect in the thoracoabdominal wall, either isolated or accompanied by other viscera in instances of pentalogy of Cantrell. Case Report: This six-year-old child has survived with uncorrected ectopia cordis. He is unable to participate in strenuous physical activities and has respiratory limitations. Conclusion: Ectopia cordis most commonly results in stillbirth or neonatal death without surgical treatment. This report highlights the exceptional 6-year survival of a child without surgical correction.

    Kommunala markanvisningars betydelse för hållbar stadsplanering: En studie om kommuners klimatarbete i markanvisnings-tävlingar och effekterna av lagändringen om kommunala särkrav2019Report (Other academic)

    I och med det kommunala planmonopolet har kommuner en central roll vid planering av ny bebyggelse. Med klimatfrågans ökade betydelse har kommuner därför använt sig av sitt planmonopol för att skapa hållbara stadsdelar, exempelvis genom att ställa skarpare krav i markanvisningstävlingar än rådande byggföreskrifter. För att minska byggkostnader och förenkla planprocessen infördes emellertid en lagändring år 2015 som ogiltigförklarar sådana särkrav vid markanvisningar. Boverkets byggregler (BBR) begränsar därmed den kommunala ambitionsnivån i nybyggnation. Syftet med detta examensarbete var därför att undersöka hur kommuner kan arbeta med hållbarhet i markanvisningar för att bidra till att uppnå kommunala klimatmål, samt hur potentialen för markanvisning som instrument har ändrats i och med lagändringen om kommunala särkrav. För att undersöka detta utfördes först en litteraturstudie vilken sedan låg till grund för en intervjustudie som omfattade fyra kommuner: Linköping, Norrköping, Växjö och Västerås. Resultatet från intervjustudien visade att lagändringen medfört att de studerade kommunernas användning av urvalskriterier i markanvisningsprospekt övergått från skarpa, detaljerade krav, till att be byggherren att beskriva sina hållbarhetsambitioner för projektet. Lagändringen verkar dessutom ha försvårat möjligheterna för kommunerna att kunna driva ett mer ambitiöst hållbarhetsarbete vid nybyggnation än kravnivåerna i BBR och det ansvaret har istället övergått mer till staten och byggherrarna. Resultatet visade dock att det fortfarande finns sätt för kommuner att uppmuntra till en högre ambitionsnivå än BBR. Kommuner kan använda byggherrars önskan att upprätthålla en god relation till kommunen genom att prioritera byggherrar som tidigare har byggt i enlighet med sitt bygglov. Denna möjlighet är som starkast i regioner med hög efterfrågan på bostäder och där det råder god konkurrens mellan byggherrar. Kommuner har också möjlighet att prioritera byggherrar som använder miljöcertifieringssystem. Kommuner kan i praktiken använda sig av särkrav i markanvisningsprocesser som rör marköverlåtelser även i fortsättningen, men med risken att byggherrar kan komma att ogiltigförklara särkraven. Denna risk finns däremot inte om kommuner ställer särkrav vid uppförande av byggnader för kommuners egen räkning.

    This essay represents an effort to rethink the relationship between political emergence and migrant agency. This undertaking has a theoretical motivation. Mainstream human and social sciences seem to be at an impasse because of their structural inability to interpret and explain systemic crises and contradictions. While this is a topic far too complex to be dealt with in a brief essay, the following pages will explore three expressions of this impasse. First, the social sciences often analyse migration without acknowledging its profound political implications. Second, European history and sociology rarely recognize histories of imperial dominance and anticolonial resistance as intrinsic to European history and society. Third, mainstream social and political theories often ignore the structural significance of collective protests and resistance movements for the realization of democracy. The article frames the analysis of these problems via two different theoretical contexts in which we can observe ongoing conceptual or methodological shifts or turns that respond to the said impasse. In studies of democracy and citizenship there has thus been a clear turn toward borders. In migration studies, there is a corresponding turn toward agency. By analysing the interconnections between these theoretical contexts the article suggests ways of resolving the three problems at hand. It starts by examining the first one, or the inability to acknowledge the profound political implications of migration. This discussion will then offer an approach to the other two, concerning the legacies of colonialism and the significance of political agency and protest.

    This paper looks at the Estonian coordinating conjunction ja ‘and’ in video- recorded Pilates classes, focusing on the instructors’ practical problem of making the students perform proper movement sequences. It shows how grammatical coordination emerges within a multimodal activity in which the instructor’s talk both directs and responds to student performance. As opposed to the frequent juxtaposition of clauses without connectors, explicit coordination with ja isused for the overall structuring of the class as well as the temporal extensionof talk to achieve synchronicity of vocal and embodied behavior. In contrast to formal theories that consider grammar as a device for coherent expression of pre-planned propositions, this study argues that grammatical structure emerges as part of practical action across participants and modalities.

    I denna artikel reder författaren ut de tre begreppen »protestant, evangelisk, reformert» alltifrån när de först kom till användning och etablerades till hur deras teologiska karaktär påverkar i dag. Så var exempelvis en gång begreppet »protestant» mindre en markering mot det romerska och mer mot vad de evangeliska såg som svärmeri. Eller för att nämna vad som är mer aktuellt, att vi i Svenska kyrkan i dag ser ett ökat inflytande från reformert tänkande. Men vad händer då med vår kyrka? Författaren är professor i teologi vid Linköpings universitet och intill nyligen rektor för Johannelunds teologiska högskola.

    "Perhaps I was drawn to the language of exhaustion because I was travelling to my doctor for a health control on the 4th of November, the day when I read the book and made this first diary note. Or maybe Frichot’s book is so thought provoking in the way it unexpectedly awakens the reader’s attention to the richness of theoretical language that exhaustion offers that it speaks to many readers who will feel that they have waited a long time for this book to be written?" This article is Mona Livholts reading of Hélène Frichot's book Creative Ecologies. Theorizing the Practice of Architecture published by Bloomsbury 2019. The article is published in the inaugural issue of Reading Writing Quarterly (December 2019), where Professor Jane Rendell invites two writers to read each other’s work, to explore ways of ‘reading writing’ that practice ‘reviewing’ from a situated perspective and re-write the genre and texture of the ‘critical review essay’.

    Abstract [en]

    In this study, I have examined how foreign-born students experience studying at a Swedish university. What they have in common is that they originally come from a different country than Sweden, that they study or have studied at a Swedish university and that they speak and understand the Swedish language well. The survey shows how ethnicity and identities are created and made visible in certain situations, and that both the Swedish language and time in Sweden are important factors for understanding norms and codes. The material is collected by me intervjuing individuals that falls under the above discription. Then I have analysed the material and compared it with privious, similar studies.

    "Chorus of the Saved": Constructing the Holocaust Survivor in Swedish Public Discourse, 1943-19662020Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    In this dissertation I examine how the Holocaust survivor has been constructed in Swedish public discourse during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. This is done using a Foucauldian-inspired genealogical method through which an eclectic collection of sources—newsreels, films, radio programs, television programs and newspaper articles—is analyzed. The theoretical underpinnings of this analysis are based on Ian Hacking’s concept of discourse where the classification of survivor ‘types’ has a direct bearing on the expressions possible for those who are classified, i.e. individuals with Holocaust experience. The overarching research question of the dissertation therefore asks: how did a Holocaust survivor ‘type’ develop in Sweden during the 1940s, 50s and 60s?  The main thrust of the argument presented in the dissertation is that the concepts of ‘silence’ and ‘excess’ have always disciplined the ways in which Holocaust survivors have been conceived of as both victims and witnesses in Swedish public discourse. The communication of Jewish suffering by survivor-witnesses has both been framed as a dangerous, destructive force which could instigate unnecessary conflict while it, at the same time, has been positioned as a remedy to collective forgetfulness as well as a solution to rising levels of xenophobia and antisemitism. How survivors have been constructed historically also demonstrates the flawed logic of a historical progressivism within which Holocaust memory is seen to steadily go from silence to interest/increased knowledge. What the research presented in this dissertation shows is that this process is not determined by historical progression but by the underlying problematization of Holocaust survivors’ utility.
