    Abstract [en]

    Cognitive tests of speech understanding were administered (presented as text, or in auditory or audiovisual modality) and perceived effort was rated. This was done in four background conditions: in silence, and in three types of noise (S/N=+10 dB) varying in temporal structure and meaningfulness. Four groups of 12 subjects each (young/elderly with normal hearing and young/elderly with hearing impairment) participated. The presence of noise had a negative effect on accuracy and speed of performance in the speech processing tasks, and resulted in higher scores of perceived effort, even when the stimuli were presented as text. Differences in performance between noise conditions existed. In the subjective scores, the noise with temporal variations, but without meaningful content, was the most disruptive of the three noise conditions. In the objective scores, the hearing-impaired subjects showed poorer results in noise with temporal variations. The elderly subjects were more distracted by noise with temporal variations, and especially by noise with meaningful content. In noise, all subjects, particularly those with impaired hearing, were more dependent upon visual cues than in the quiet condition.

    Abstract [en]

    A method for evaluating the spectral, temporal and combined spectral temporal resolution of hearing is presented; it was used to obtain masked hearing thresholds using the fixed frequency Békéy technique. The masking noise was a broadband random noise with a 3 dB/octave roll off (pink noise). Spectral resolution was assessed by introducing a spectral gap in the masking noise centered at the test tone frequency. Temporal resolution was assessed by introducing temporal gaps, the centre of which coincided in time with the centre of the test tone-pulses. The spectral and temporal gaps were used either separately or simultaneously. Release of masking values were calculated from masked hearing thresholds. One test group comprised 16 normal-hearing subjects, a second group 16 elderly (age 55-75 years) subjects with normal hearing for their age. Temporal gaps were 20, 50 and 100 ms long. Spectral gaps had a bandwidth of 1/10, 1/3, and 1 octave. Each gap or combination of gaps was tested at the frequencies 0.5, 1, 2 and 4 kHz. Release of masking increased with increasing temporal or spectral gaps. If a temporal gap and a spectral gap were combined, the release of masking increased further. Maximum release of masking was obtained with the 100 ms temporal gap combined with the 1 octave notch filter. The overall difference in release of masking between the young and elderly normal-hearing group was 2 dB.

    Speech recognition (SRT) and just-follow-conversation (JFC) tasks were performed by normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners matched for age and sex using three masking backgrounds: speech spectrum random noise, continuous forward speech and reversed speech. In the SRT task, the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio for 50% correctly repeated words of short, 5-word, low-redundancy sentences was determined. In the JFC task, the listener adjusted the speech level until he felt he could just understand what was being said. The listeners needed a higher S/N ratio for the JFC task than for the SRT task. The speech maskers gave less masking than the random noise. No difference between forward and reversed speech was observed. The hearing-impaired listeners needed a higher S/N ratio than the normal-hearing subjects. Correlations between results obtained with the SRT and the JFC techniques were significant with speech but not with random noise as masker. The highest correlations between pure-tone hearing thresholds at different frequencies and results in the SRT and JFC tests were seen at 0.5 and 1 kHz.

    Thirteen normal subjects were investigated with a broad frequency-band (up to 4.5 Hz) rotatory test. The vestibular stimulation consisted of either a pseudo-random or a sinusoidal frequency sweep oscillation. Eye movements were recorded by EOG. Head movements were recorded either by a potentiometer attached to the chairs axis of rotation or by an angular rate sensor attached to a biteboard. Gain and phase values between eye and head movements were calculated. Measurements were performed in light and darkness during the execution of various fixation tasks. In the higher frequency range there was a difference in gain and phase between potentiometer and rate sensor measurements due to movement of the head relative to the headholder. Visual suppression, in agreement with earlier studies, was more effective during a sinusoidal stimulation than during a pseudorandom stimulation at low frequencies, using the more precise rate sensor measurement technique. Different instructions in the dark could alter the gain values at lower frequencies (up to 2 Hz) during sinusoidal stimulation. During pseudo-random stimulation no such differences could be elicited. Under all test conditions with the rate sensor, the gain values approached unity at about 3 Hz.
