Robust Community Predictions of Hubs in Gene Regulatory Networks2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Many diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes, originate from several malfunctions in biological systems. The human body is regulated by a wide range of biological systems, composed of biological entities interacting in complex networks, responsible for carrying out specific functions. Some parts of the networks, such as hubs serving as master regulators, are more important for maintaining a function. To find the cause of diseases, where hubs are possible disease regulators, it is critical to know the structure of these biological systems. Such structures can be reverse engineered from high-throughput data with measured levels of biological entities. However, the complexity of biological systems makes inferring their structure a complicated task, demanding the use of computational methods, called network inference methods. Today, many network inference methods have been developed, that predicts the interactions of biological networks, with varying degree of success. In the DREAM5 challenge 35 network inference methods were evaluated on how well interactions in gene regulatory networks (GRNs) were predicted. Herein, in contrast to the DREAM5 challenge, we have evaluated network inference methods’ ability to predict hubs in GRNs. In accordance with the DREAM5 challenge, different methods performed the best on different data sets. Moreover, we discovered that network inference methods were not able to identify hubs from groups of similarly expressed genes. Also, we noticed that hubs in GRNs had a distinct expression in the data, leading to the development of a new method (the PCA method) for the prediction of hubs. Furthermore, the DREAM5 challenge showed that community predictions, combining the predictions from many network inference methods, resulted in more robust predictions of interactions. Herein, the community approach was applied on predicting hubs, with the conclusion that community predictions is the more robust approach. However, we also concluded that it was enough to combine 6-7 network inference methods to achieve robust predictions of hubs.

The non-inherited maternal HLA haplotype affects the risk for type 1 diabetes2009In: International journal of immunogenetics, ISSN 1744-3121, Vol. 36, no 1, p. 1-8Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to test the hypothesis that the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) haplotype that is not inherited from the mother, that is, the non-inherited maternal antigen (NIMA) affects the risk for type 1 diabetes (T1D). A total of 563 children with T1D and 286 non-diabetic control children from Sweden were genotyped for DRB1, DQA1 and DQB1 alleles. The frequency of positively (DR4-DQA1*0301-B1*0302 and DR3-DQA1*0501-B1*0201), negatively (DR15-DQ A1*0102-B1*0602) or neutrally (all other) T1D associated HLA haplotypes were compared between NIMA and non-inherited paternal antigen (NIPA). All comparisons were carried out between HLA-matched patients and controls. The frequency of positively associated NIMA was higher among both DR4/X-positive healthy individuals compared wit DR4/X-positive patients (P < 0.00003) and DR3/X-positive healthy individuals compared with DR3/X-positive patients (P < 0.009). No such difference was observed for NIPA. High-risk NIMA was increased compared to NIPA among healthy DR3/X- and DR4/X-positive children (P < 0.05). There was no difference in frequency of positively associated haplotypes between patient NIMA and NIPA. The NIMA but not the NIPA affects the risk for T1D, suggesting that not only the inherited but also non-inherited maternal HLA haplotypes, perhaps through microchimerism or other mechanisms, may influence the risk for the disease.

Analys av tanniner: från granbarksextrakt2009Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The objective for this master’s thesis was to test and evaluate two methods for determining the content of tannin in a pinebarkextract. The methods used at Södra for this previously have not been specific enough, only the amount of polyphenolics have been measured. One of these methods is a test based on the Stiasny test and it determines the extracts ability to form a gel with formaldehyde. When this test was carried out it showed that the extract did not contain much tannin. The other method used at Södra measures the amount of polyphenolic substances with a spectrophotometer. The result from this method showed that the content were 50 %.

One of the two new methods that were evaluated determines the amount tannin present in the extract because of tannins ability to form a complex with proteins. According to this method, the amount tannin in the extract were 42,5 %, and 19,4 % of this in the form of tannic acid. These results are credible on basis of previous information about the extract.

The other method uses a RP- HPLC where ellagic and gallic acid were used as standards. The amount ellagic acid in the extract was determined to 0,06 %, but the result from gallic acid was inconclusive. Further analysis is necessary to evaluate the obtained results and the methods reliability.

If the metods is to be used on a regular basis, my recommendation would be to start evaluating the protein-binding method because this would be easier and less time-consuming than modifying the HPLC- method. The HPLC- method could on the other hand provide useful information about the extract, not only the amount tannin could be measured, but also which kind of tannin could be investigated.

    Abstract [en]

The data consultancy company Knowit AB has a client who advertises on Google AdWords. This thesis focuses mainly on finding which settings in AdWords generate purchases of the client’s product. If a setting frequently contributes to clicks but rarely to purchases of the product, the setting is not profitable. The target variable in this thesis is binary and indicates whether a click on the advertisement led to purchase of the product or not. Since the target variable’s distribution was skewed, the sampling technique SMOTE was used to create more observations in the minority class. The classification methods researched and presented in this thesis are logistic regression, neural networks and decision trees. The results showed that all four factor had significant affect on the probability of purchase. First, if a desktop or laptop computer was used to search on Google, the likelihood that a click leads to purchase is substantially higher compared to if a mobile or tablet was used. Second, an “exact match” setting for the keywords gives the highest probability of purchase and a “broad match” gives the lowest probability. Third, purchase rates are also affected by the day of the week. Sunday has the highest probability of purchase while Saturday and Tuesday have the lowest probability. Finally, an advertisement´s average position affects the likelihood of the product being purchased. The higher value of average position, the higher the likelihood of purchase.

    Abstract [en]

A consumer is constantly influenced by the different impressions in a store where products compete for attention and try to differentiate themselves from competitors. A product that is crowded with several others on store shelves is magazines, and number of titles on the Swedish market have increased by 40 per cent over the past ten years.

Previous studies show how colors are said to influence people in different situations, that red, for example, is a good color to attract a consumer. This does not necessarily mean that it leads to a purchase. What is it that interests the consumer in terms of color? What colors on a magazine cover is of interest to an audience, most and least, and why is it so? Is there a connection between the colors that interest the target audience and the colors that actually lead to purchases? This study examines how the color of the magazine cover affects a consumer, both in terms of associations, emotions and buying needs. The magazine that has been in focus of the study is Cosmopolitan, targeting women aged 20-30 years, which is within the genre of Lifestyle for women. The study includes a literature review to learn more about how color affects a consumer’s attention and what value a certain color has. Furthermore, sketches had been created that has been the foundation of the focus groups who were assembled. The analysis made shows that the audience liked the following colors and color combinations on a Cosmopolitan cover: blue, yellow, cold and bright colors. The covers that made the audience most interested in a purchase had the following color and color combinations: blue, yellow, blue-yellow, cold and bright colors. This shows that the study found a correlation between the colors that audience liked best with the colors that the target group also could consider buying. The colors that audience did not like was the following colors and color combinations: black, red-green, blue-red, green, green-yellow and warm colors. The covers that the target group found least interesting to buy were the following colors and color combinations: red, green, blue-red, red-green and green-yellow. The covers that the target group found most interesting was the following colors and color combinations: red, blue-red, green, green-yellow, and warm and dark covers. What appears in the study is that the use of red on the magazine cover captures the consumer’s interest but it would not lead to purchase, according to the focus groups for this study. It is also clear that the colors that are considered to be most interesting is not in the target audience like or choose to buy. Another finding was that the target audience often choose what was most familiar to them.

A piece of cake: en posthumanistisk studie av prostitutionsforum och positiva attityder till sexköp2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to elucidate what enables positive attitudes towards buying sex. The study has a posthumanist approach and the data is gathered trough hidden observations of a Swedish web forum dedicated to discussions of prostitution. The theoretical frame that is used in the study consist of concepts from the material feminists Karen Barads and Donna J. Haraways theories and Niels van Doorns argument of the embodiment of virtual texts. A theoretical inspired thematic analysis is used to examine the data from the observations of the web forum. The study shows that positive attitudes towards buying sex are given space and permanence though a variety of intra-actions between material and human agents. At the same time the result of the intra-actions is that the positive attitudes get mediated and endorsed, which enables positive attitudes towards buying sex. In addition to that, the intra-action between material and human agents creates normative understandings about buying sex and prostitution, which also enables these attitudes. In conclusion, the study shows that the enablement of positive attitudes towards buying sex is created through intra-action between not only human agents, instead the material shows to have a significant part in the enablement of positive attitudes towards buying sex.

Asexualitetens (o)möjlighet: en kvalitativ studie om sexualnormativitet och identitet2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This report treats two assignments that concerns the biofuel furnace at Billerud Skärblacka AB and how these assignments were solved. The assignments were: reducing the number of CO-spikes and tuning the overfire air control loop. To reduce the number of CO-spikes the possibility that skewness in mass distribution affects the number of CO-spikes were study. The skewnwss of mass distribution was controled and adjusted with two experiments. The conclusion that was made is that the skewness of mass distribution were not sufficient enough to affect the number of CO-spikes. Most likely because there are other factor that affects the number of CO-spikes more than the skewness of mass distribution.

The objective with tuning the overfire air control loop was to find a faster and better interplayed control loop. To solve the assignment the first thought was to make a model of the furnace. But this idea was too much work for a single master thesis. Therefore a Simulink-model and a control strategy were produced instead. During the work with tuning the overfire air control loop the changes were issued from the control strategy and the Simulink-model were used for the tuning of the air valves. The result from tuning the overfire air control loop were faster regulators and a better tracking of the reference value for the secondary and tertiary air valve along with a reduced levels of carbon monoxide.

Molecular Dynamics of the Adsorption of Organic Molecules on Organic Substrates2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A great interest has been shown for self-assembled organic nano-structures that can be used in a variety of optoelectronic applications, from element detection to home electronics. It is known from experimental research that sexiphenyl (6P) grown on muscovite mica substrate form uniaxially self-assembled nanofibers which together with sexithiophene (6T) deposited on top gives the possibility to tune their polarized emission. A key to continue develop and explore the full potential of this technique is to understand the mechanisms behind the growth. This thesis investigate the initial growth of 6P and 6T on a 6Pˆ nanofiber substrate through Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. The adsorption of the molecules has been simulated with Simulated Annealing (SA) where 6P align perfectly with the substrate for all coverage while 6T starts to align after a certain amount of coverage. Both molecules show a monotonic increase in the adsorption energy per molecule with an increasing coverage. The surface diffusion of the molecules has been studied and shows a higher movement for both in the direction of the longmolecular axis.

Varumärkesförfalskade varor i transit: – En studie av transitbestämmelserna2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine how femininity, Silikon, Vecko Revyn, and Darling. The study is made from a critical discourse analytical approach and text, pictures, and layout are all analysed. Some of the main characteristics of the material are the division in the categories"we"and"them", double messages, and personal address to the reader. Femininity is strongly associated with body, sexuality, beauty, and looks. A common representation is beauty defined by the features: thin, young, and fair skin. The most distinguished difference is the way differences between women and men are represented in the magazines.

Shared Vision, Common Action Explained: A Case Study of the Strategy-making Process of the European Union Global Strategy- A Function of Liberal Intergovernmentalism or Neofunctionalism?2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study is an attempt to understand strategy-making in the European Union (EU). By targeting the strategy-making process of the European Union Global Strategy (EUGS), the stydy aims to reveal the legal provisions and the in-practice procedures of strategy-making in the area of EU foreign policy. The thesis presents two theories, liberal intergovernmentalism and neofunctionalism, from which it constructs two contrasting ideal types of policy-making. By applying the theoretical ideal types on the targeted case, that is the strategy-making process of the EUGS, the study reflects on the relationships between Member states and the EU, as well as on the inter-institutional dynamics that would come to characterize the progress and development of the EUGS.

Despite difficulties in rejecting any of the theoretical ideal types, the study finds the policy-formulation of the EUGS to be more coherent with the neofunctional ideal type than that of liberal intergovernmentalism. This is due to the central role of the European External Action Service (EEAS) which would come to conduct an innovative policy-formulation phase of the strategy and to the lack of bargaining between the Member States on the textual provisions of the strategy. The neofunctional ideal type does yet fall short in explaining for the EUGS as an initial concept and partly for the implementation of the strategy, favoring a liberal intergovernmental interpretation of how the instruments of the EUGS would come to be initiated.

The study also reflects on if the experience of making the EUGS may provide for an argument to review the presumed centrality of Member States being the ultimate drivers of EU foreign policy.

Övergripande kvalitets och kapabilitets granskning av produktionsprocessen – en implementering av SPS.: Overall Quality and Capability Study of the Production Process – an Implement of SPC.2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Quality was earlier only an issue for the company’s quality departments but today is the entire organization involved in quality- and improvements work. With the customers in focus, both external and internal, quality and improvement work should be integrated in the daily activities. The management shall state goals and visions together with a policy. Through participation the correct requirements for a successful work are created.

With SPC, statistics process control, there is an opportunity to perceive variations in the process and with the correct tools make it stable. Examples of tools that can be used are the seven QC – tools and the PDCA – cycles, which are presented more detailed in the report.

By using SPC and the information given by it, a measure of the process capability within fixed tolerances on the produced parts can be achieved.

The analysis in this report has been made in order to verify the capability and variations in the measuring system used within a selected production sector.

Multidimensional Visualization of News Articles2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Large data sets are difficult to visualize. For a human to find structures and understand the data, good visualization tools are required. In this project a technique will be developed that makes it possible for a user to look at complex data at different scales. This technique is obvious when viewing geographical data where zooming in and out gives a good feeling for the spatial relationships in map data or satellite images. However, for other types of data it is not obvious how much scaling should be done.

In this project, an experimental application is developed that visualizes data in multiple dimensions from a large news article database. Using this experimental application, the user can select multiple keywords on different axis and then can create a visualization containing news articles with those keywords.

The user is able to move around the visualization. If the camera is far away from the document icons then they are clustered using red coloured spheres. If the user moves the camera closer to the clusters they will pop up into single document icons. If the camera is very close to the document icons it is possible to read the news articles

A Skeleton library for Cell Broadband Engine2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Cell Broadband Engine processor is a powerful processor capable of over 220 GFLOPS. It is highly specialized and can be controlled in detail by the programmer. The Cell is significantly more complicated to program than a standard homogeneous multi core processor such as the Intel Core2 Duo and Quad. This thesis explores the possibility to abstract some of the complexities of Cell programming while maintaining high performance. The abstraction is achieved through a library of parallel skeletons implemented in the bulk synchronous parallel programming environment NestStep. The library includes constructs for user defined SIMD optimized data parallel skeletons such as map, reduce and more. The evaluation of the library includes porting of a vector based scientific computation program from sequential C code to the Cell using the library and the NestStep environment. The ported program shows good performance when compared to the sequential original code run on a high-end x86 processor. The evaluation also shows that a dot product implemented with the skeleton library is faster than the dot product in the IBM BLAS library for the Cell processor with more than two slave processors.

BlockLib: A Skeleton Library for Cell Broadband Engine2008In: Proceedings - International Conference on Software Engineering, New York, USA: ACM , 2008, p. 7-14Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Cell Broadband Engine is a heterogeneous multicore processor for high-performance computing and gaming. Its architecture allows for an impressive peak performance but, at the same time, makes it very hard to write efficient code. The need to simultaneously exploit SIMD instructions, coordinate parallel execution of the slave processors, overlap DMA memory traffic with computation, keep data properly aligned in memory, and explicitly manage the very small on-chip memory buffers of the slave processors, leads to very complex code. In this work, we adopt the skeleton programming approach to abstract from much of the complexity of Cell programming while maintaining high performance. The abstraction is achieved through a library of parallel generic building blocks, called BlockLib. Macro-based generative programming is used to reduce the overhead of genericity in skeleton functions and control code size expansion. We demonstrate the library usage with a parallel ODE solver application. Our experimental results show that BlockLib code achieves performance close to hand-written code and even outperforms the native IBM BLAS library in cases where several slave processors are used.

    Abstract [en]

Departing from the notion of 'the stranger' in classical sociological literature (Alfred Schutz and Georg Simmel), the paper discusses the significance of two paradigmatic approaches, one of which has discursively branched off into modernity. In a world where the search for roots has become widespread - from the new social movements to the building of new nation-state, from identity politics to national identities - the multiple expression of exclusion has spread. A new kind of European citizen, a 'stranger', is being constructed. I argue that scientific discourses related to the intellectual heritage of Alfred Schutz have helped to create the 'stranger' and the 'non-stranger'. It is further argued that Simmel's approach is an alternative well worth highlighting.

    Abstract [en]

The paper examines the meaning of ethnic memory as it finds expression in the life stories and identity formation of three young Swedish women of immigrant background. Their identity is formed within afield of tension between what is and what has been. Using the examples of diffèrent metaphors attached to the symbolic space of tradition, they seek to link time and space and thus fragments of migrants’ splintered life. In relating the past to the present and its antagonisms to those of the present, all three girls demonstrate an ability to re‐interpret and to translate tradition into present experience. This, the author maintains, can be understood as a creative capacity out of which a new kind qf self‐orientation is born, and a new sense of home and belonging, come into being. In this way ‘modern ethnic consciousness ‘ takes form as a reflexive linkages across space and time. A new order is created out of the disorder of dissolved continuity.

    Abstract [en]

This article offers a reflection on migration in the era of globalisation, and on its expression in contexts of tourism and self-employment. Ethnic entrepreneurship is increasing in Sweden. The motive forces behind this kind of self-employment are discussed in relation to unemployment and discrimination in the Swedish labour market. Other aspects of entrepreneurship to be discussed are related to the “importation” of Thais as “tourists” to Sweden, where they are exposed to severe exploitation in the informal economy. Different expressions of ethnic entrepreneurship are discussed in the context of the “global city” and its various types of citizen.

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the complex meaning of ethnicity and identity in the multicultural society of today with reference to Swedish society. Sweden, a pronouncedly multiethnic society, is today undergoing division along ethnic lines. Social inequalities tend to be understood in terms of cultural difference. This development seems to be characteristic of most European countries. Culture is usually connected with ethnicity and race and understood as pure, as an ‘essence’, as related to some original and eternal ethnic core. In this way important aspects of cultural dynamic in multicultural society are left unobserved. What is usually not recognized are cultural crossings and the emergence of composite identities. Within the framework of multicultural society new cultures, identities and ethnicities are created. Departing from some general features of the dominant discourse on ethnicity, its historical roots and its relations to culture and multicutturalism, I discuss problems of cultural essentialism.

    Abstract [en]

The article discusses some general features of the dominant discourses of ethnicity and culture, their historical roots and relations to contemporary forms of multiculturalism. It compares different expressions of cultural belonging in European societies taking Sweden as an example. Departing from the complex meaning of culture the problems of essentialism inherent in concepts of culture and ethnicity are discussed. Sweden, as well as other European multiethnic societies, is undergoing a division along ethnic lines. Social inequalities tend to be understood in terms of cultural difference. Culture is usually connected with ethnicity and race and understood as pure, as an ᅵessence,ᅵ as related to some original and eternal ethnic core. In this way important aspects of cultural dynamics in the multiethnic society, not least among young people, are left unobserved. What are usually not recognized are cultural crossings and the emergence of composite identities and their relations to social structure.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Women who have immigrated, as well as teh questions of ethnicity and multiculturalism have been invisible in mainstream feminist research in Sweden. In the context of the international feminist debate, however, these issues are gaining high priority. For some time now the importance of pursuing politics of recognition of cultural differences hu been on the agenda. But now the debate is turning towards a critical examination of inherent traps. The article examines the problematic of cultural essentialism - a discursive terrain shared by Feminism and Multiculturalism. Multicultural policies and politics of recognition risk reducing social inequalities to cultural differences and thereby promoting the social exclusion of ethnic minorities. If “recognition” is of an oppositional “other”, and if it fails to acknowledge that identities are hybrid and composite, it risks lapsing into cultural essentialism. In order to counter culturalism. feminists need, it is maintained, to develop a conception of social citizenship which links citizenship to issues of social rights as well as the exigenc’es of a transethnic dialogue and politics of solidarity.

Feminism och "de andra": erkännandets politik, dess potential och fällor1997In: Kvinneforskning, ISSN 0806-6256, no 1, p. 5-11Article in journal (Refereed)
