Internet use among adolescents with intellectual disabilities at home and school2016In: Abstract book: International Conference on Cerebral Palsy and other Childhood-onset Disabilities Stockholm 1–4 June 2016, 2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Today everyday life depends on having access to, understand and use internet inorder to participate and take part in societal resources. This understanding can be complex forpersons with intellectual disabilities (ID) due to their cognitive impairments. It is even statedthat internet-use can be yet another part of daily life activities they are excluded from. Internet-use is claimed to involve risks, but also benefits for persons with ID, but there is a shortage inempirical studies with the target group ́s own opinion regarding this. Broader knowledge isacquired of internet-use in everyday life for adolescents with ID, as a precondition toparticipation.

Aim: This study aims to explore and describe internet-use and doing internet activities at homeand at school among adolescents with mild and moderate intellectual disabilities. Method: The study has a qualitative inductive design using observations and interviews in thetwo settings; at home and at school. Participants are six adolescents with mild and moderate ID,from special schools in the middle-region of Sweden, between the ages 13-20, that use internetto some extent. Data was collected at 2 occasions/participant for about 2hours/participant/setting. The analysis was done using a qualitative content analysis.

Result: Preliminary results show that adolescents with mild and moderate ID use internet both athome and in school, to a greater extent than was expected, but the doings of internet-activitiesvaries in the different settings. Both facilitating and hindering aspects are described by theparticipants. Pictures on the internet seem to be of support when using and navigating theinternet.

Conclusion: Deeper knowledge regarding internet-use from the target groups own perspectivehas been gained. The results can be used in the different occupational settings and in furtherresearch to survey internet use and participation in internet-activities

How can an entrepreneurial mind-set be encouraged among occupational therapy students? An example from Linköping University, Sweden.2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

The structures of social and health care are changing, and public health related problems in Western Europe are increasing, such as an increased elderly population, obesity and mental health problems in young people. In order to meet the need of the clients in occupational therapy practice we have to look into new ways to approach the changing times. A way to support the students’ preparedness for action in the field is to encourage the use of an entrepreneurial mindset through different learning methods. An entrepreneurial mindset is defined as “a way to see the possibilities and make something out of them”.

    Objectives

To describe learning methods to raise awareness and promote an entrepreneurialmind-set among OT students and teachers.Description/ReportThe learning methods for the students varies from working with a specific design problem in groups, discussing literature about entrepreneurship in seminars and get supervision from Innovation office. To enhance the teachers awareness about entrepreneurial mind-set workshops about how to find new non-traditional fieldwork placements in a creative way was conducted.

    Results/Discussion

Our experiences of how the entrepreneurial mind-set can be encouraged are that entrepreneurship can be looked upon in different ways and should be seen close to the reality that one work in. Follow-up from workshops with teachersas well evaluations from the students about the entrepreneurial mind set will be presented. Primary results show that students feel more prepared for a new and creative way of thinking and that teachers have more entrepreneurial mind-set than they think in the beginning.

    Conclusion

An increased entrepreneurial mindset can be learned/trained and used as a way of dealing with the future challengesin the health care sector for occupational therapists.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Medvetna relationer skapar bra interventioner2012In: Arbetsterapeuten, ISSN 0345-0988, no 3, p. 32-33Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Modellen beskrivs i hennes bok från 2008 The Intentional Relationship – Occupational Therapy and Use of Self.

Utilization and content validity of the Swedish version of the Volitional Questionnaire (VQ-S)2008In: Occupational Therapy in Health Care, ISSN 0738-0577, E-ISSN 1541-3098, Vol. 22, no 2-3, p. 163-176Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the utility and content validity of the Swedish version of the Volitional Questionnaire (VQ-S). The participants in this study were thirteen occupational therapists selected because they worked with clients for whom the VQ-S is appropriate (in this case, adults with intellectual impairments) and because they had knowledge of the Model of Human Occupation. These participants completed a demographic questionnaire at the beginning of the study. Each therapist then used the VQ-S a total of six times and after each time they completed a questionnaire concerning the utility and content validity of the instrument. After having administered the instrument six times they completed a third questionnaire that assessed their perceptions of the VQ-S based on their total experience. Data from these questionnaires and the six assessment forms with the actual client ratings were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative procedures. The findings indicate that the VQ-S has clinical relevance and potential for implementation with adults with intellectual impairments. They also support the content validity of the VQ-S.

Internet use among adolescents with intellectual disabilities in Sweden2018In: 18th International WFOT18 Congress on Occupational Therapy Connected in Diversity, Positioned for Impact, Cape Town, South Africa, 21-25 May 2018, 2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Internet is an integral part of everyday life today. In Sweden 98% of adolescents are reported using internet. However, adolescents with intellectual disabilities are often excluded in national surveys, since questions are not adapted for the target group. Statistics remain therefore limited regarding internet-use among adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Objectives: To investigate and describe internet-use among adolescents with intellectual disabilities through an adapted version of a nationwide survey in Sweden. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an adapted version of a survey from the Swedish Media Council on media-use among adolescents. Cognitive adaptations were included and it was accessible through the web and in paper. The sample was drawn from three municipalities using a total-selection of pupils in secondary- and upper secondary special schools. 265 surveys were sent out and the response rate was approximately 32%. Data was analyzed through descriptive statistics. Results: The result gives demographic data on the participants and descriptive statistics on the access to devices for internet-connection. Further, data are provided on activities done in leisure time and whether internet is used or not, together with perceptions of doings on internet from the participants. Conclusion: Stepwise adaptations of the survey with different levels of cognitive support enabled the participation of adolescents with intellectual disabilities and the result gives increased knowledge of internet-use among adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Finally, future comparative analysis are possible due to the national survey being used implying the voices of adolescents with intellectual disabilities being heard.

Conversations about Death and Dying with Older People: An Ethnographic Study in Nursing Homes2018In: Healthcare, E-ISSN 2227-9032, Vol. 6, no 2, article id 63Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Nursing homes are often places where older persons amp;ldquo;come to die.amp;rdquo; Despite this, death and dying are seldom articulated or talked about. The aim of this study was to explore assistant nursesamp;rsquo; experiences of conversations about death and dying with nursing home residents. This study is part of an implementation project through a knowledge-based educational intervention based on palliative care principles. An ethnographic study design was applied in seven nursing homes, where eight assistant nurses were interviewed and followed in their daily assignments through participant observations. The assistant nurses stated that they had the knowledge and tools to conduct such conversations, even though they lacked the time and felt that emotional strain could be a hinder for conversations about death and dying. The assistant nurses used the strategies of distracting, comforting, and disregarding either when they perceived that residentsamp;rsquo; reflections on death and dying were part of their illness and disease or when there was a lack of alignment between the residentsamp;rsquo; contemplations and the concept of dying well. They indicated that ambivalence and ambiguity toward conversations about death and dying should be taken into consideration in future implementations of knowledge-based palliative care that take place in nursing homes after this project is finalized.

Low-level cadmium exposure and osteoporosis.2000In: Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, ISSN 0884-0431, E-ISSN 1523-4681, Vol. 15, p. 1579-1586Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Osteoporosis is a major cause of morbidity worldwide. A number of risk factors, such as age and gender, are well established. High cadmium exposure causes renal damage and in severe cases also causes osteoporosis and osteomalacia, We have examined whether long-term Pow-level cadmium exposure increases the risk of osteoporosis. Bone mineral density (BMD) in the forearm was measured in 520 men and 544 women, aged 16-81 years, environmentally or occupationally exposed to cadmium, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) technique. Cadmium in urine was used as the dose estimate and protein HC was used: as a marker of renal tubular damage. There was a clear dose-response relation between cadmium dose and the prevalence of tubular proteinuria. Inverse relations were found between cadmium dose, tubular proteinuria, and BMD, particularly apparent in persons over 60 years of age, There was a dose-response relation between cadmium dose and osteoporosis. The odds ratios (ORs) for men were 2.2 (95% CI, 1.0-4.8) in the dose group 0.5-3 nmol Cd/mmol creatinine and 5.3 (2.0-14) in the highest dose category (greater than or equal to 3 nmol/mmol creatinine) compared with the lowest dose group (<0.5 nmol Cd/mmol creatinine). For women, the OR was 1.8 (0.65-5.3) in the dose group 0.53 nmol Cd/mmol creatinine. We conclude that exposure to low levels of cadmium is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis.

SPREADING OF PAIN AND INSOMNIA IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC PAIN: RESULTS FROM A NATIONAL QUALITY REGISTRY (SQRP)2017In: Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, ISSN 1650-1977, E-ISSN 1651-2081, Vol. 49, no 1, p. 63-70Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: To explore how demographics, pain, psychosocial factors and insomnia relate to the spread of chronic pain. Methods: The study included 708 patients (68% women; median age 46 years; interquartile range 3557 years) with chronic pain who were referred to a multidisciplinary pain centre. Spreading of pain was assessed using a questionnaire covering 36 anatomically predefined pain regions. Data were collected on demographics, pain symptoms, psychological distress, and insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index). Four sub-categories of chronic pain were established: chronic local pain, chronic regional pain medium, chronic regional pain heavy, and chronic widespread pain. Results: The median number of pain regions was 10 (interquartile range 6-18). Prevalence of chronic pain was as follows: chronic local pain 9%, chronic regional pain medium 21%, chronic regional pain heavy 39%, and chronic widespread pain 31%. In the regression models, being a woman and persistent pain duration had the strongest associations with spreading of pain, but anxiety, pain interference, and insomnia were also important factors. Conclusion: Spreading of chronic pain can only partly be explained by the simultaneous levels of insomnia. Female sex, pain duration, pain interference and anxiety appear to have more significant relationships with the spread of pain. Targeting these factors may lead to improvements in treatment and prevention strategies.

Comorbid insomnia in patients with chronic pain: a study based on the Swedish quality registry for pain rehabilitation (SQRP)2014In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 36, no 20, p. 1661-1669Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This study investigates the prevalence of insomnia and its relationship to other symptoms and health aspects in patients with chronic pain. Methods: Patients with chronic pain conditions (n = 845) referred to a multidisciplinary pain centre completed surveys provided by the Swedish quality registry for pain rehabilitation (SQRP). The SQRP collects data on socio-demographics, health status, symptoms of pain, mood and insomnia and life satisfaction. Results: The majority of patients (65.3%) had clinical insomnia according to the insomnia severity index (ISI). Insomnia correlated significantly but weakly with pain, depression, anxiety and coping; the strongest multivariate correlations were found with depression and anxiety followed by pain interference and pain severity. Pain intensity, depression and anxiety correlated stronger than ISI with respect to the two investigated aspects of health. Conclusions: The prevalence of insomnia is high in patients with chronic pain conditions, but the level of importance in relation to other symptoms for health aspects is low, and the associations with other important symptoms are relatively weak. One way to increase the effects of multimodal rehabilitation programs may be to provide interventions directed specifically at insomnia rather than focusing only on interventions that address pain, depression and anxiety. Implications for Rehabilitation The prevalence of insomnia is high in patients with complex chronic pain conditions. Relatively low correlations existed between insomnia and pain intensity, depression, anxiety and other psychological aspects. Pain intensity, anxiety and depression were more important for perceived health aspects than insomnia. One way to increase the effects of multimodal rehabilitation programs may be to also include interventions directed directly to insomnia.

Roller under verksamhetsförlagd utbildning: Om roller som synliggörs i interaktion mellan lärarstudent och handledare2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Results of the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative 20182018In: Proceedings of the 13th International Workshop on Ontology Matching: co-located with the 17th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2018) / [ed] Pavel Shvaiko, Jérôme Euzenat, Ernesto Jiménez-Ruiz, Michelle Cheatham, Oktie Hassanzadeh, Aachen, Germany: CEUR Workshop Proceedings , 2018, Vol. 2288, p. 76-116Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI) aims at comparing ontology matching systems on precisely defined test cases. These test cases can be based on ontologies of different levels of complexity (from simple thesauri to expressive OWL ontologies) and use different evaluation modalities (e.g., blind evaluation, open evaluation, or consensus). The OAEI 2018 campaign offered 12 tracks with 23 test cases, and was attended by 19 participants. This paper is an overall presentation of that campaign.

Organic carbon budget for the Gulf of Bothnia2006In: Journal of Marine Systems, ISSN 0924-7963, E-ISSN 1879-1573, Vol. 63, no 3-4, p. 155-161Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We calculated input of organic carbon to the unproductive, brackish water basin of the Gulf of Bothnia from rivers, point sources and the atmosphere. We also calculated the net exchange of organic carbon between the Gulf of Bothnia and the adjacent marine system, the Baltic Proper. We compared the input with sinks for organic carbon, permanent incorporation in sediments and mineralization and subsequent evasion of CO2 to the atmosphere. The major fluxes were riverine input (1500 Gg C year- 1), exchange with the Baltic Proper (depending on which of several possible DOC concentration differences between the basins that was used in the calculation, the flux varied between an outflow of 466 and an input of 950 Gg C year- 1), sediment burial (1100 Gg C year- 1) and evasion to the atmosphere (3610 Gg C year- 1). The largest single net flux was the emission of CO2 to the atmosphere, mainly caused by bacterial mineralization of organic carbon. Input and output did not match in our budget which we ascribe uncertainties in the calculation of the exchange of organic carbon between the Gulf of Bothnia and the Baltic Proper, and the fact that CO2 emission, which in our calculation represented 1 year (2002) may have been overestimated in comparison with long-term means. We conclude that net heterotrophy of the Gulf of Bothnia was due to input of organic carbon from both the catchment and from the Baltic Proper and that the future degree of net heterotrophy will be sensible to both catchment export of organic carbon and to the ongoing eutrophication of the Baltic Proper. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Abstract [en]

Omgivningspåverkan vid sänkhammarborrning2014Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Transgression and Tradition: Redefining Gender Roles in Elizabeth Gaskell´s North and South2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay argues that Elizabeth Gaskell challenges the limiting gender roles of the Victorian era through giving her heroine, Margaret Hale in North and South, both the traditionally female qualities of virtue and selflessness and the traditionally masculine qualities of independence and action. The essay also argues that Gaskell’s heroine balances between the feminine and the masculine world as to not appear “unwomanly”, but rather subtly influencing the readers and calls for changing gender norms. Concrete examples of the heroine’s gender transgressions are put forward, but also her compliance to the traditional gender roles summed up in three roles or themes: the angel in the house, the female visitor and the refined lady.

This essay also provides a didactic approach on working with North and South and the topic of Victorian gender norms in the upper secondary school. The relevance of and reasons for reading literature in school are also presented. The didactic chapter offers a concrete lesson plan on how to work with the theme of Victorian gender norms, which may develop students’ emphatic skills and also make them aware of ties between themselves and people that lived a long time ago.

Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Konstruktion av en databas till stöd för kassaflödesvärdering: Construction of a database to support information management for discounted cash flow valuation of corporations2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When a discounted cash flow valuation is performed, the value of the asset is determined by summarising the predicted cash flows and discounting them with the cost of capital. Due to the fact that the future cash flows are predictions, a valuation is always affected by uncertainty. In order to improve the accuracy of the predictions, an extensive amount of information is used. To be successful, it is important to collect reliable and relevant information and manage the information in an efficient way. At present it is difficult to gather and manage information and sufficient computer aid is missing. The purpose of this master thesis is to construct a proposal for a database to support information management for discounted cash flow valuation of corporations. The thesis is conducted with a qualitative research method. An extensive frame of reference is presented in order to give the reader the possibility to get to know both databases and cash flow valuations.

The result of the study is a conceptual model as well as a logical and physical database model. The proposed database consists of 20 tables where the database relationships connect the value creating factors of the corporation. Possible positive effects of the database are simplified deriving of the corporate value and capacity to store and manage greater amounts of information in a logical manner. The database can also improve the flexibility and adjust the valuation to the dynamic nature of the corporation. Furthermore, the identification of risks and risk factors can be improved. A potential problem with the database is the risk of storing irrelevant information. It can also be difficult to prove a sufficient validity for the database since no user valuation has been carried out.

In the thesis, the author also argues that the database can be utilised for discounted cash flow valuation of any corporation. However, some tables, attributes and relationships need to be changed and adjusted to the specific nature of the corporation.

    Abstract [en]

The number of LBOs in Sweden has increased during the last years and the current market trend is positive. MostLBOs involves private companies, but a few concerns public corporations on the national share market. In this thesis we will examine the conditions of a LBO of Cloetta Fazer AB. The purpose is to study existing conditions of Cloetta Fazer AB and to examine pros and cons with the deal. Based upon information presented in the frame of reference and in the empirical part, two cash flow valuations have been carried out. The first valuation is a regular discounted cash flow valuation while the other is a specific LBO valuation. In a LBO valuation the debt terms and the changed capital structure is taken into consideration. The valuations are followed by an analysis where LBO conditions as well as pros and cons are examined.

Positive conditions for Cloetta Fazer AB are insensitiveness of market fluctuations, a strong market position, stable cash flows, low risk and strong product trademarks. There is also a possibility of increasing the expected rate of return with more leverage since the current financial structure can take on more debt. We argue that a LBO of a public corporation is surrounded by limited information due to legal restrictions such as insider rules. Limited information makes it difficult to motivate value creation. Other factors that obstruct a LBO of Cloetta Fazer AB is increased market competition, indistinct possibility of rationalising the business and a high EV/EBITDA multiple. We have also found that the IRR value is too low. Due to the fact that a LBO requires a premium of at least 20 % over market value, it is difficult to argue for a LBO of Cloetta Fazer AB.

    Panel cointegration of Chinese A and B shares2009In: Applied Financial Economics, ISSN 0960-3107, E-ISSN 1466-4305, Vol. 19, no 23, p. 1859-1871Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We study information flows in China's stock markets. By using panel data methods we test for a unit root in the price premium of domestic investors’ A shares over foreign investors’ B shares, as well as cointegration between the A- and B-share prices on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges. We find that the A-share premia are nonstationary, and that the A- and B-share prices are not cointegrated up till January 2001. After February 2001, when domestic investors were allowed to trade B shares, the A-share premia become stationary and the A- and B-share prices cointegrated. One interesting result from the panel data analysis is that most firms’ A and B shares are cointegrated, but not all firms. Cointegration is more likely for firms with a small A-share premium, low ratio of nontradeable shares, high growth rate and large B-share market capitalization relative to the A-share market capitalization. Our findings suggest that the relaxation of the investment restrictions decreased the segmentation between the A- and B-share markets in China.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The competition level on the Swedish bank market has increased after an extended deregulation in the 1990s, much due to niche players entering the market, competing with the large players on the field. In February 2007, a new regulation, Basel II, regulating the level of capital a bank must keep in relation to its risks taken, was implemented. The regulation allows banks to use different methods to calculate this capital requirement, methods that cost different amounts to implement and maintain. As a result of this, many smaller banks will have difficulties in implementing more advanced methods since the costs associated with these are too high for a smaller bank to handle. Different methods will also result in different capital requirements for different banks.

The purpose of this study is to describe the expected effect the introduction of Basel II will have on the positions of the niche banks on the Swedish bank market. To be able to fulfil this purpose, a qualitative study has been made, where interviews have been held with nine niche banks and two large ones. People from The Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority, The Swedish Banker’s Association, The Swedish Competition Authority and KPMG Financial Services have also been interviewed to receive a better view of the competitive effects of Basel II.

The study has shown that the aspects of Basel II that will effect the competition on the market are the implementation and maintenance costs that come with the regulation, and the fact that banks are allowed to use different methods to calculate the capital requirements for credit risks, with an increased risk-based pricing differentiation as a result. Niche banks have a possibility to keep and strengthen their positions on the market if they adjust their activities in relation to the new conditions Basel II involves.

Moreover, this study has shown advantages in being a niche actor, regardless of size, over being a small actor. Banks that compete for customers with lower risks will have advantages due to Basel II if being large, or a bank working within one area and therefore has a possibility to be large in this specific area. Niche players that choose to compete in areas involving high risk customers do not need the same volumes since the margins in these areas are expected to rise, but the banks need to limit their activity to specific business areas to be able to keep using less costly methods to calculate the capital requirements without loosing in competitive strength as a result of this.

Att designa effektivt lärande med blandade lärmiljöer: Hur lärmiljöer och dess aktiviteter inom blandade lärmiljöer påverkar kunskapsutveckling och förtroende för organisationen2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 12 credits / 18 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Integrated system for monitoring road safety performance in cities2014In: Urban street design & planning / [ed] Pratelli, A, WIT Press, 2014, p. 105-114Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A strong monitoring system of road safety in a city is necessary to ensure that the strategies implemented will meet stated targets at city and national levels. Although road safety performance is a result of many key indicators, only a few of these indicators are generally considered in monitoring the performance of road safety in a city and in comparison to other cities. A number of monitoring systems are already being developed and used in road safety and they range from relatively simple models to highly complex ones depending on the number of indicators involved, details of data and complexity of methods used in calculations and analysis. In road safety, there are three main types of monitoring that are generally used, which are: Process Monitoring, Outcome Monitoring and Target Monitoring. The aim of this paper is to provide the importance and usefulness of having a fourth type of monitoring, so-called Integrated Monitoring, that links process, outcome and targets together. The paper also provides a conceptual overview, and illustrations that are used in the construction of the integrated monitoring system.

Road Safety Development Index: Theory, Philosophy and Practice2007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation develops, presents and tests a new international tool, the so-called Road Safety Development Index (RSDI), which indicates in a comprehensive and easy way the severity of the road safety situation in a specific country and/or in comparison with other countries. There are three pillars of outcomes involved in the framework of RSDI. One pillar is the People focus (road user behaviour). The second is the System focus (safer vehicles, safer roads, enforcement, management, etc). The third is the Product focus in terms of accident death rates. This thesis analyses each of these pillars. In addition, RSDI links the key national practices of road safety to each other and to the end-results (accident death rates). The study suggests a master-list of performance indicators to be implemented for assessing road safety level in a country and for RSDI building. Based on the “master-list”, a short key list of performance indicators is chosen and classified into two primary categories that correspond to two groups of countries: LMCs “Less Motorised Countries” and HMCs “Highly Motorised Countries”. RSDI aggregates the key performance indicators into one single quantitative value (composite index). Four main objective and subjective approaches are used to calculate RSDI and determine which one is the best. One approach uses equal weights for all indicators and countries, whereas the other approaches give different weights depending on the importance of indicators. Two empirical studies were carried out, in different parts of the world, to determine the applicability of this tool in real world applications. The first empirical study comes from eight European countries (HMCs). The second empirical study comes from five Southeast Asian countries (LMCs). The RSDI results from this study indicate a remarkable difference between the selected countries even at the same level of motorisation and/or with close accident death rates. The unavailability of comparable and useful data are problems for deeper analysis of RSDI, especially the index should be as relevant as possible for different parts of the world. The empirical and theoretical assessments prove that RSDI can give a broader picture of the whole road safety situation in a country compared to the traditional models and can offer a simple and easily understandable tool to national policy makers and public.

Higher burden of supraventricular ectopic complexes early after catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation is associated with increased risk of recurrent atrial fibrillation2018In: Europace, ISSN 1099-5129, E-ISSN 1532-2092, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 50-57Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aims Early identification of patients who could benefit from early re-intervention after catheter ablation is highly warranted. Our aim was to investigate the association between post-procedural burden of supraventricular ectopic complexes (SVEC) and the risk of long-term atrial fibrillation (AF) recurrence. Methods and results A total of 125 patients undergoing catheter ablation for AF were included. Patients underwent 7-day Holter recordings immediately post-procedural. The number of SVEC in post-procedural Holter recordings was categorized into quartiles: 0-72, 73-212, 213-782 and amp;gt;= 783 SVEC/day. Long-term AF recurrence was defined as a combined endpoint of AF amp;gt;= 1 min during follow-up Holter recordings, cardioversion or hospitalization for AF after a 3-month blanking period and within 24 months of follow-up. High post-procedural supraventricular ectopy burden was associated with an increased risk of long-term AF recurrence in a dose-dependent manner (amp;gt;= 783 SVEC: HR 4.6 [1.9-11.5], P amp;lt; 0.001) irrespective of AF recurrence during the blanking period or other risk factors. In patients with early AF recurrence amp;lt; 90 days after catheter ablation ectopy burden was also highly predictive of long-term AF recurrence (SVEC amp;gt;= 213: HR 3.0 [1.3-6.7], P = 0.007). Correspondingly, patients with early AF recurrence but low ectopy burden remained at low risk of long-term AF recurrence after the blanking period. Conclusion Our results indicate that post-procedural ectopy burden is highly associated with long-term AF recurrence and could be a potent risk marker for selection of patients for early re-ablation. Development of future ablation risk stratification and strategies should include focus on post-procedural ectopy burden.

Antiarrhythmic medication is superior to catheter ablation in suppressing supraventricular ectopic complexes in patients with atrial fibrillation2017In: International Journal of Cardiology, ISSN 0167-5273, E-ISSN 1874-1754, Vol. 244, p. 186-191Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Supraventricular ectopic complexes (SVEC) originating in the pulmonary veins are known triggers of atrial fibrillation (AF) which led to the development of pulmonary vein isolation for AF. However, the long-term prevalence of SVEC after catheter ablation (CA) as compared to antiarrhythmic medication (AAD) is unknown. Our aims were to compare the prevalence of SVEC after AAD and CA and to estimate the association between baseline SVEC burden and AF burden during 24 months of follow-up. Methods: Patients with paroxysmal AF (N = 260) enrolled in the MANTRA PAF trial were treated with AAD (N = 132) or CA (N = 128). At baseline and 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months follow-up patients underwent 7-day Holter monitoring to assess SVEC and AF burden. We compared SVEC burden between treatments with Wilcoxon sum rank test. Results: Patients treated with AAD had significantly lower daily SVEC burden during follow-up as compared to CA (AAD: 19 [6-58] versus CA: 39 [14-125], p = 0.003). SVEC burden increased post-procedurally followed by a decrease after CA whereas after AAD SVEC burden decreased and stabilized after 3 months of follow-up. Patients with low SVEC burden had low AF burden after both treatments albeit this was more pronounced after CA at 24 months of follow-up. Conclusion: AAD was superior to CA in suppressing SVEC burden after treatment of paroxysmal AF. After CA SVEC burden increased immediately post-procedural followed by a decrease whereas after AAD an early decrease was observed. Lower SVEC burden was highly associated with lower AF burden during follow-up especially after CA. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The impact of supraventricular ectopic complexes in different age groups and risk of recurrent atrial fibrillation after antiarrhythmic medication or catheter ablation2018In: International Journal of Cardiology, ISSN 0167-5273, E-ISSN 1874-1754, Vol. 250, p. 122-127Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Supraventricular ectopic complexes (SVEC) are known risk factors of recurrent atrial fibrillation (AF). However, the impact of SVEC in different age groups is unknown. We aimed to investigate the risk of AF recurrence with higher SVEC burden in patients +/- 57 years, respectively, after treatment with antiarrhythmic medication (AAD) or catheter ablation (CA). Methods: In total, 260 patients with LVEF amp;gt;40% and age amp;lt;= 70 years were randomized to AAD (N = 132) or CA (N = 128) as first-line treatment for paroxysmal AF. All patients underwent 7-day Holter monitoring at baseline, and after 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months and were categorized according to median age +/- 57 years. We used multi-variate Cox regression analyses and we defined high SVEC burden at 3 months of follow-up as the upper 75th percentile amp;gt;195 SVEC/day. AF recurrence was defined as AF amp;gt;= 1 min, AF-related cardioversion or hospitalization. Results: Age amp;gt;57 years were significantly associated with higher AF recurrence rate after CA (58% vs 36%, p = 0.02). After CA, we observed a higher SVEC burden during follow-up in patients amp;gt;57 years which was not observed in the younger age group treatedwith CA (p = 0.006). High SVEC burden at 3 months after CA was associated with AF recurrence in older patients but not in younger patients (amp;gt;57 years: HR 3.4 [1.4-7.9], p = 0.005). We did not find any age-related differences after AAD. Conclusion: We found that younger and older patients respond differently to CA and that SVEC burden was only associated with AF recurrence in older patients. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. The pH Response and Sensing Mechanism of n-Type ZnO/Electrolyte Interfaces2009In: Sensors, ISSN 1424-8220, E-ISSN 1424-8220, Vol. 9, no 9, p. 7445-7480Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ever since the discovery of the pH-sensing properties of ZnO crystals, researchers have been exploring their potential in electrochemical applications. The recent expansion and availability of chemical modification methods has made it possible to generate a new class of electrochemically active ZnO nanorods. This reduction in size of ZnO (to a nanocrystalline form) using new growth techniques is essentially an example of the nanotechnology fabrication principle. The availability of these ZnO nanorods opens up an entire new and exciting research direction in the field of electrochemical sensing. This review covers the latest advances and mechanism of pH-sensing using ZnO nanorods, with an emphasis on the nano-interface mechanism. We discuss methods for calculating the effect of surface states on pH-sensing at a ZnO/electrolyte interface. All of these current research topics aim to explain the mechanism of pH-sensing using a ZnO bulk- or nano-scale single crystal. An important goal of these investigations is the translation of these nanotechnology-modified nanorods into potential novel applications.

Membrane potential measurements across a human fat cell using ZnO nanorods2009In: NANOTECHNOLOGY, ISSN 0957-4484 , Vol. 20, no 17, p. 175103-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A ZnO nanorod probe was employed to determine the resting membrane potential of a human fat cell. The distribution of protons associated with the cell versus the extracellular distribution is proportional to changes in membrane potential. The membrane potential determines the concentration gradient of the protons with dominant permeability according to the Nernst equation. A ZnO nanorod probe was successfully used to find the resting membrane potential for a human fat cell: 34 +/- 2.6 mV.

Ionic current flow through ZnO nanotubes2009In: NANOTECHNOLOGY, ISSN 0957-4484, Vol. 20, no 50, p. 505504-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The control of ionic current (electrolyte) flow through zinc oxide (ZnO) nanotubes is investigated. We studied a structure operating like a field effect transistor with a tunable ionic flow. The main investigation tool used was molecular dynamics simulation. We complemented the molecular dynamics simulation with the site binding method in order to study the effect of the double layer on the ionic current flowing through the nanotube. We achieved this by considering the electrolyte solution as a virtual semiconductor wire. The double layer capacitance and surface charge of the inner walls of the ZnO nanotube have been calculated. The results indicate that ZnO nanotubes can be tuned to operate as ion selectors. ZnO nanotubes exhibit enhanced functionality with characteristics similar to those of the nanopore membrane.

Zinc oxide nanorod for intracellular pH sensing2006In: Applied Physics Letters, ISSN 0003-6951, E-ISSN 1077-3118, Vol. 89, no 17, p. 073119-1-073119-3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

pH determination is a prerequisite for many biochemical and biological processes. The authors have used two methods, namely, the electrochemical potential method and the site binding method to study the sensitivity of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods for the use as intracellular pH sensing device. The dimensions of these nanorods were varied with radii between 50–300 nm and lengths between 2 and 10 μm. The ZnO nanorods showed a high sensitivity ≈ 59 mV per decade at room temperature for a pH range (1–14), assuming that the solution is water. This is expected due to the polar and nonpolar surfaces of the ZnO nanorods.

    Abstract [sv]

Unraveling interaction between tinnitus symptoms, cognitive abilities, and mental disorders2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 12 credits / 18 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Based on the former studies, there is evidence of tinnitus being associated with performance on cognitive ability tests (for example Andersson et al. 2009, Hallam et al. 2004). The topic of my bachelor thesis was to unravel how depression, stress and anxiety connected with tinnitus symptoms are related to cognitive abilities such as verbal fluency, inhibition ability and working memory capacity. In order to fill an existing gap of knowledge, the relationship of different severity of stress caused by tinnitus symptoms as measured with Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and cognitive abilities and depression and anxiety symptoms was emphasized.

The experiment group was divided into two subgroups, those with lower and higher level of perceived tinnitus severity and the differences in test scores between groups were investigated with one-way analysis of variance. As a result, significant differences between the two tinnitus patient groups were found in the level of performance in inhibition task where participants were asked to give the font color of congruent color - word pair as an answer. It was also studied whether there were correlations between perceived severity of tinnitus symptoms, depression and anxiety symptoms, working memory capacity and inhibition ability. As a result of correlation analysis, this study confirmed the connection between tinnitus symptoms and anxiety and depression symptoms found in previous studies, and a significant correlation was found between THI scores and anxiety symptoms, and THI scores and C inhibition test scores where the participant was asked to name the font color from incongruent color-word pairs. The results of this study suggest that there is a connection between the level of perceived tinnitus severity and the ability to name font color of incongruent color - word pair. The current study found no evidence about the connection between THI scores and other cognitive abilities as well as anxiety and depression symptoms, even though the THI scores correlated with both anxiety symptom scores and with the reaction times of an inhibition task where the participants were asked to point out the font color from incongruent color - word pairs.

Real-Time Systems with Radiation-Hardened Processors: A GPU-based Framework to Explore Tradeoffs2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Radiation-hardened processors are designed to be resilient against soft errorsbut such processors are slower than Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS)processors as well significantly costlier. In order to mitigate the high costs, software techniques such as task re-executions must be deployed together withadequately hardened processors to provide reliability. This leads to a huge designspace comprising of the hardening level of the processors and the numberof re-executions of each task in the system. Each configuration in this designspace represents a tradeoff between processor load, reliability and costs.

The reliability comes at the price of higher costs due to higher levels of hardeningand performance degradation due to hardening or due to re-executions.Thus, the tradeoffs between performance, reliability and costs must be carefullystudied. Pertinent questions that arise in such a design scenario are — (i)how many times a task must be re-executed and (ii) what should be hardeninglevel? — such that the system reliability is satisfied.

In order to evaluate such tradeoffs efficiently, in this thesis, we proposenovel framework that harnesses the computational power of Graphics ProcessingUnits (GPUs). Our framework is based on a system failure probabilityanalysis that connects the probability of failure of tasks to the overall systemreliability. Based on characteristics of this probabilistic analysis as well asreal-time deadlines, we derive bounds on the design space to prune infeasiblesolutions. Finally, we illustrate the benefits of our proposed framework withseveral experiments

Prokinetic effect of duodenal extract on ovine gallbladders2000In: Medical principles and practice, ISSN 1011-7571, E-ISSN 1423-0151, Vol. 9, no 1, p. 74-80Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: It is known that the macrolide antibiotic erythromycin stimulates gastrointestinal and gallbladder motility by an as yet unidentified mechanism. It was the objective of this study to investigate the mechanism of the gallbladder motility-stimulating effect of erythromycin. Methods: In our experiments we used strips of sheep gallbladders measuring isometric tension in organ baths. Since erythromycin itself did not induce contraction we examined the prokinetic effects of sheep duodenal extract, incubated with (DEX) or without (blank) erythromycin (10(-5) M). Results: Both DEX and blank elicited gallbladder contraction associated with heat-stable, water-soluble but not with lipid-soluble duodenal prokinetic factor. The factor is unrelated to motilin or cholecystokinin and is only partially (<20%) blocked by atropine (10(-6) M) and not affected by the pretreatment with dexamethasone or somatostatin. Conclusion: It was concluded that erythromycin indirectly stimulates contraction of ovine gallbladders through the endogenous release of a duodenal prokinetic factor. Copyright (C) 2000 S. Potentiometric urea biosensor utilizing nanobiocomposite of chitosan-iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles2013In: 21st International Laser Physics Workshop 23–27 July 2012, Calgary, Canada, Institute of Physics (IOP), 2013, Vol. 414, article id 012024Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The iron oxide (Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles have been fabricated through a simple, cheap and reproducible approach. Scanning electron microscope, x-rays powder diffraction of the fabricated nanoparticles. Furthermore, the fabrication of potentiometric urea biosensor is carried out through drop casting the initially prepared isopropanol and chitosan solution, containing Fe3O4 nanoparticles, on the glass fiber filter with a diameter of 2 cm and a copper wire (of thickness −500 μm) has been utilized to extract the voltage signal from the functionalized nanoparticles. The functionalization of surface of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles is obtained by the electrostatically immobilization of urease onto the nanobiocomposite of the chitosan- Fe3O4 in order to enhance the sensitivity, specificity, stability and reusability of urea biosensor. Electrochemical detection procedure has been adopted to measure the potentiometric response over the wide logarithmic concentration range of the 0.1 mM to 80 mM. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles based urea biosensor depicts good sensitivity with ~42 mV per decade at room temperature. Durability of the biosensor could be considerably enhanced by applying a thin layer of the nafion. In addition, the reasonably stable output response of the biosensor has been found to be around 12 sec.

Cobalt oxide magnetic nanoparticles-chitosan nanocomposite based electrochemical urea biosensor2015In: Indian Journal of Physics, ISSN 0973-1458, E-ISSN 0974-9845, Vol. 89, no 4, p. 331-336Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, a potentiometric urea biosensor has been fabricated on glass filter paper through the immobilization of urease enzyme onto chitosan/cobalt oxide (CS/Co3O4) nanocomposite. A copper wire with diameter of 500 mu m is attached with nanoparticles to extract the voltage output signal. The shape and dimensions of Co3O4 magnetic nanoparticles are investigated by scanning electron microscopy and the average diameter is approximately 80-100 nm. Structural quality of Co3O4 nanoparticles is confirmed from X-ray powder diffraction measurements, while the Raman spectroscopy has been used to understand the chemical bonding between different atoms. The magnetic measurement has confirmed that Co3O4 nanoparticles show ferromagnetic behavior, which could be attributed to the uncompensated surface spins and/or finite size effects. The ferromagnetic order of Co3O4 nanoparticles is raised with increasing the decomposition temperature. A physical adsorption method is adopted to immobilize the surface of CS/Co3O4 nanocomposite. Potentiometric sensitivity curve has been measured over the concentration range between 1 x 10(-4) and 8 x 10(-2) M of urea electrolyte solution revealing that the fabricated biosensor holds good sensing ability with a linear slope curve of similar to 45 mV/decade. In addition, the presented biosensor shows good reusability, selectivity, reproducibility and resistance against interferers along with the stable output response of similar to 12 s.

The determination of valence band offset and the current transport properties of the p-NiO/n-ZnO heterojunction2013Manuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The electron transport in the electronic devices has significant influence on the device performance, thus current transport properties determination is highly demanded for a particular device. Herein, we report the facile hydrothermal growth method based fabrication of p-NiO/n-ZnO heterojunction. The material characterization was performed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy. These techniques provided the good crystal quality, pure phase of p-NiO and n-ZnO nanostructures respectively. The measured valance band offset of composite nanostructure is 2.25 eV and conduction band offset was found to be 2.58 eV. The current transport properties of the fabricated p-n junction are governed by three different I-V regions. The impedance spectroscopy was used for the determination of the role of grain boundaries at the interface.

Prevalence of common hereditary risk factors for thrombophilia in Somalia and identification of a novel Gln544Arg mutation in coagulation factor V2017In: Journal of Thrombosis and Thrombolysis, ISSN 0929-5305, E-ISSN 1573-742X, Vol. 44, no 4, p. 536-543Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Thrombophilia, commonly manifested as venous thromboembolism (VTE), is a worldwide concern but little is known on its genetic epidemiology in many parts of the globe particularly in the developing countries. Here we employed TaqMan genotyping and pyrosequencing to evaluate the prevalence of known common nucleotide polymorphisms associated with thrombophilia in a Somali population in the Puntland region of Somalia. We also employed next generation sequencing (NGS) to investigate other genetic variants in a Somali patient with deep venous thrombosis (DVT). As expected, we found no existence of factor V Leiden (rs6025) and prothrombin G20210A (rs1799963) in the Somali population. The G allele of ABO [261G/delG] polymorphism (rs8176719) was found at a frequency of 29%, similar to that observed in other African populations. We found the lowest so far reported frequency of MTHFR C677T (rs1801133) polymorphism in the Somali population (T allele frequency 1.5%). A novel and deleterious single nucleotide variation in exon 11 of coagulation factor V (c.1631A amp;gt; G) causing Gln544Arg exchange in factor V was identified in a 29 years old Somali female with DVT. The same patient was heterozygous to VKORC1 Asp36Tyr polymorphism (rs61742245) that predisposes to warfarin resistance. In conclusion, this study shows that common hereditary factors for thromboembolism found in Caucasians are either less frequent or absent in the Somali population-similar to the situation in other Africans. NGS is possibly a better choice to detect genetic risk variants for thrombosis in this ethnic group.

    Abstract [en]

Modelica is a multi-domain and equation-based modeling language. Modelica is based on object-oriented principles and non-causal modeling. The language is constructed to facilitate reuse and decompose models. The models and the modellibrary can modified to design a new nonlinear components.

Object-oriented modeling is an excellent way to analyze and study large complex heterogeneous physical systems. The object-oriented modeling approach build on reusing and decomposition of models and non-causal modeling.

Modeling physical systems often leads to a DAE system with index 2 or 3. It is required to use automated symbolic manipulation of the DAE system to do the simulation.

Modelica need a compiler tool to run the simulation. Dymola is the dominating tool on the market. Through a graphic editor the user can easily model and simulate the physical system.

Silver-chitosan nanobiocomposite as urea biosensor2014In: Optoelectronics and Advanced Materials Rapid Communications, ISSN 1842-6573, E-ISSN 2065-3824, Vol. 8, no 11-12, p. 1238-1242Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were synthesized by aqueous chemical growth technique. The above mentioned synthesized materials were characterized by applying scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction for confirmation of morphological analysis, compositional purity, and crystalline property and emission characteristics as well. In order to fabricate the urea biosensor (potentiometric), a solution of deionized water and chitosan was prepared having Ag NPs. The said solution was dropped on the glass fiber filter having diameter of 2 cm. A wire of copper having thickness of approximately 500 pm was used for the voltage signal to pull out from the said working nanoparticles (NPs). To improve the strength, sensitivity and the quality of the potentiometric urea biosensor, a specific functional surface of Ag NPs was attained by electrostatic restrained of an enzyme (urease) onto the chitosan-Ag (a nanobiocomposite). The potentiometric reaction was measured via electrochemical detection technique. The potentiometric urea biosensor illustrates significant sensibility at room temperature with approximate to 42 mV as per span. Furthermore, the said biosensor showed an appropriate stable response within 7 sec.
