What a Marvellous Event: The Ever Becoming of an Italian Village2011In: Journal of Mediterranean Studies, ISSN 1016-3476, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 13-25Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Place is here defined as a space given social, cultural and historical meaning through an ongoing intervention of people who are objects as well as subjects within this process. Thus place can be seen as a continuously ongoing process of (re)creation by those who live it. This essay intends to set out and illustrate parts of this process.

Fieldwork was carried out in Monte, the fictive name of a small village situated about an hour's drive from Rome, Italy. In order to show how place may be used as an analytical concept, three different ways in which this particular local (re)creation process takes place will be presented, followed by a theoretical discussion. The first example comes from Montese social life, the second from the village cemetery and the last comes from the yearly pilgrimages dedicated to the local patron saint.

Allting har ett pris: En fallstudie om hur fem konsthantverkare i Östergötland prissätter sina produkter2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    • Hur prissätter etablerade konsthantverkare i Östergötland sina produkter?

Under diskussionen utvecklas tankarna kring komplexiteten i konsthantverkares prissättning.

    Physical activity and music to support pre-school children’s mathematics learning in Sweden2016In: Education 3-13, ISSN 0300-4279, E-ISSN 1475-7575, Vol. 46, no 5, p. 483-493Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In order to give all children equal opportunities in school, methods to prevent early differences are needed. The overall aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of two structured teaching methods: Math in Action, characterised by physical activity and music, and common numerical activities. Children (28 girls, 25 boys) were assigned to 1 of the 2 conditions during a period of 3 weeks (2 times a week for a 30-minute session). The results show that children who learn mathematics in an environment characterised by physical activity and music develop their mathematical abilities significantly more than children who learn mathematics through common number activities. We have also shown that children with different motor skill abilities benefit from learning mathematics in an environment characterised by physical activity and music.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor`s thesis was to investigate organizations and volunteers that work or volunteer to help children around the world in different ways.

I want to know what it is that drives them in their work and how they handle the thoughts and feelings that may arise when they come into contact with children who lack the rights that children according to Swedish law should have. The chosen organizations are just a small part of the enormous commitment among people who strive for all children to have the right to a good childhood.

En häxjakt i modern tid: Satanistpaniken under 1980-90 talet i USA2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Surrogacy and the best interest of the child2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

If altruistic surrogacy should be legal in Sweden, laws concerning screening of the parents should be mandatory and adoption should be promoted as an alternative to surrogacy to a larger extent. Both in surrogacy and adoption the best interest of the child should be a priority, but parents regardless of sexuality, income and to some extent age, should qualify as long as they can prove their ability as parents.

Kyrkomålaren Pehr Hörberg: En teologisk tolkning av konstnärens kristna bildkonst2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The Effects of Revolution Upon the development of Women's Capabilities and Freedom: An Analysis of the Trilogy, The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins with a Special Focus on the Protagonist, Katniss Everdeen2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present essay is the evaluation of women’s conditions and gender equality in the novel, the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Different conditions of women such as the political, physical, marital and financial are analyzed in Panem society before and after the revolution. It is also discussed, which aspects of women’s lives are improved and which aspects are left unchanged after the rebellion of the novel. How far may revolution and the political system be influential upon the development of women and the decrease in male domination in Panem, as an example of real communities? In the final process of analysis, the lack of meritocracy in Panem society is discussed as the result of gender discriminations or the essence of policy. There are also comparisons between Panem and Greece and their heroes. The result of this comparison is, discovering a fluctuation in values, morals and political thoughts from ancient times up to an unknown future. Katniss as the heroine and the ideal female of society is primarily analyzed in each part, and then the other female characters are explored, depending on their roles and importance in the different parts.

Direct-To-Consumer Advertising of Prescription Drugs: An Ethical Assessment2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Direct-to-Consumer Advertising (DTCA) of prescription drugs has been a consistent controversial topic extensively debated in scholarly work by many authors. This thesis compares the arguments made by the proponents and opponents of this debate and comes to a conclusion that there is less justification in claims that DTCA benefits society. The thesis goes further in assessing the benefits from normative ethical principles, including using Rawls difference principle as a guide, to evaluate which side of the debate conforms more logically along the teachings of ethical philosophy. At the end it is apparent that the least advantaged members of society do not benefit from this aggressive marketing strategy. It concludes that the pharmaceutical industry makes exaggerated claims of providing the public increased autonomy when, in reality, it is trying to further its own cause of making huge profits for its shareholders. This thesis also reaches the conclusion that the industry uses patients as a means to achieve its own end, that end being unreasonable levels of profit.

Euthanasia: A Critical Analysis of the Physician's Role2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sometimes relatives have taken me on one side and told me they cannot bear it any more:"Isn't there something you can do to end it all?"More often requests for euthanasia have come from those who are ill. I remember visiting a man with lung cancer. He asked his wife to leave the room. As she closed the door he leaned over and grabbed my arm. "I want to die", he said. "Please can you give me something." He felt a burden on his wife and wanted euthanasia for himself .

Often in their duty, physicians are faced with euthanasia requests of this kind. Death is the inevitable fate of all humans but how we die is an issue of great concern for many of us. Fear of pain, loss of control and being a burden to our loved ones are common issues surrounding dying and death of patients. This has led to varying circumstances of patients’ death, and of a significant remark, the involvement of physicians in bringing about these deaths through an act of euthanasia. Euthanasia involves the intentional killing of a patient by the direct intervention of a physician (or another party) ostensibly for the good of the patient, and the most common form that this comes is through lethal injection. The ethics of euthanasia and of a physicians’ involvement have been a contentious issue from the beginnings of medicine. This for the most part is as a result that the ethical code of physicians has long been based in part on the Hippocratic Oath, which requires physicians to “do no harm”. Thus, the focus of this work will be to look into the role of the physician in ending a patient’s life through the act of euthanasia. Although necessary but not a central point of this work to merely develop arguments for and against the justification of euthanasia and a physician’s involvement in the act, but to critically view the role played by physicians in ending the life of patients through euthanasia in contrast with their medical obligation. The issue of euthanasia raises ethical questions for physicians. Is it morally right or wrong for a physician to end the life of his or her patient? And this therefore will be the focus of this work.

Försäkringskassan har beslutat: En undersökning av mottagaranpassning och språkbruk i Försäkringskassans beslutstexter2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to learn about and demonstrate the process in which Försäkringskassan (The Swedish Social Insurance Agency) customizes texts and the texts linguistics influence on a potential beneficiary. I use three different questions to fulfill the purpose of the study. I examine what the manuals writers of Försäkringskassan use say about the issues of sentence length, addressing the beneficiaries and wording – three language features that represent different perspectives within plain language research. Furthermore, I examine how decision texts are created and tailored for its beneficiary group and how the language in decisions is perceived by potential beneficiaries. The study’s main method is a case study, which is composed of three data collection methods – comparative text analysis, unstructured interview and survey analysis. The purpose with the different data collection methods is to produce a variety of data that can be discussed in relation to previous research in areas relevant to the purpose of this study. The manuals used by the social insurance staff seem to have a peripheral position on the issue of sentence length, although the survey respondents are expressing criticism towards too long or too short sentences. The study shows that Försäkringskassans decision process is effective, since decisions are created through collaboration of language experts, lawyers and insurance specialists – a collaboration which has also been praised by Språkrådet. However, certain problems arise with the legal language and in some cases Försäkringskassan have to resign themselves to use words and concepts that cannot be described as plain language. The study also demonstrates the need of continuous text reviewing, since the texts should follow current research in plain language and Föräkringskassans guidelines. The fact that Försäkringskassans role as a text transmitter affect the perception of language and content is clear due to results of the survey, a fact which is also supported by previous research. How language is perceived by a beneficiary depends both on the recipient's background knowledge and by his or her attitude towards Försäkringskassan as a text sender.

Primary teachers’ perceptions and attitudes on the status of experiential learning in outdoor language teaching in Cyprus2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Outdoor education is considered to be a recent teaching approach and method in a general educational framework, which is related to learning through authentic places and different direct experiences. However, the learning process within the educational system in Cyprus is mainly based on traditional models of teaching. Despite that fact, a modified society established the necessity for a new educational curriculum, which was implemented in 2010. Thus, the current research is focused on a curriculum-related study on outdoor learning and teaching, based on experiential learning in primary schools in Cyprus. Specifically, the focal point is on teachers’ perceptions regarding the status of experiential learning within the Greek language curriculum and the possibilities of implementing outdoor language activities, in order to enhance students’ learning. Through a qualitative approach, this research included analysis of the data extracted from ten semi-structured synchronous online interviews with primary teachers. The data were analysed thematically and summarized in five themes related to the connections between outdoor learning, experiential learning and language teaching. In particular, the relevant findings demonstrated that experiential learning is mainly presented on a theoretical base through the language curriculum and that outdoor language activities, although they can enhance the implementation of more efficient lessons, are limited. The results reveal primary teachers’ basic knowledge on the field of outdoor education, as they additionally noted some important barriers of outdoor learning, such as time limitations, lack of support and the traditional way of thinking. Thus, they pointed out the necessity of applying significant changes that will support the new Greek language curriculum and its basic principles. Additionally, the teachers acknowledged several benefits of outdoor language teaching mainly related to the students’ personal and social development. The above findings contribute to the current limited scientific knowledge, concerning the practice of outdoor education in primary level in Cyprus. To conclude, the results of the specific study are focused on the perceptions of the ten participants, so they cannot be generalized. Therefore, further research on the related field would be important for a wider investigation of outdoor language learning within the Cypriot educational system.

Outdoor Education Perspectives: International Insights within the Field2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The subject of this project is an analysis of the perception of postgraduate students of "Outdoor Environmental Education and Outdoor Life Master Program" regarding the concept of "Outdoor Education". The perceptions are introduced and elaborated through interviews with nine Master students from September 2013 till June 2014. One by one, the qualitative data is phenomenologically analyzed and interpretation of the findings are demonstrated to the reader. At the end of this study, five different themes, which have been obtained during this study, are presented. These themes are: the benefits of outdoor education; the practicality of outdoor education, the effects of outdoor education and issues within outdoor education. I argue how perspectives of international students vary depending on their culture.

    Abstract [en]

: This essay consists of an investigation into the role of the artist as represented in a selection of self-portraits by the artists David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl and Anders Zorn. In accordance with Michael Baxandalls theories regarding the Period Eye, a number of cultural and social circumstances relating to the role of the artist influencing the self-portraits are investigated. From Erving Goffmans dramaturgical perspective the selfportraits are viewed as part of a performance where the role of the artist is acted out. This amounts to an attempt of a nuanced interpretation and a view contemporary to the artists time.

    Abstract [en]

The development of applied ethics in recent decades has had great significance for philosophy and society. In this article, I try to characterise this field of philosophical inquiry. I also discuss the relation of applied ethics to social policy and to professional ethics. In the first part, I address the following questions:

    1. What is applied ethics?
    2. When and why did applied ethics appear?
    3. How do we engage in applied ethics? What are the methods?

In the second part of the article, I introduce professional ethics. What is professional ethics, and how can one distinguish professional ethics from applied ethics? I argue that the moral content of professional ethics is a result of professional relations. I also argue that professional ethics best can be understood as a type of virtue ethics.

    Abstract [en]

Recently,  four Kikuyus and former Kenyan Mau-Mau fighters claimed compensation  for castration, torture and rape committed in the British detention  camps in the 1950s. Also recently, representatives of the Herero  people went to Berlin to bring home skulls that Germans brought  to Berlin after the genocide at the beginning of the Twentieth Century.  The detentions and abuses of Kikuyu and the genocide of the Herero  people are just two examples of offenses carried out by European  nations during colonialism. Do these offenses have any reverberations  today? Should we simply forget about the deeds that happened such  a long time ago or do they raise any legal or moral questions?

The concept  of justice has two dimensions, distributional and rectificatory.  This article focuses on the meaning and implication of rectificatory  justice for historical wrongs. The simple idea that if A is harming  B, A has to correct her act, i.e. the basic idea of rectificatory justice,  presupposes a line of complicated assumptions when it is applied  to specific historical incidences, for example colonialism.

A model provides  a basis for an explication of rectificatory justice. It is then  applied to a discussion of rectification after colonialism. The  questions of who can rightly claim rectification and who owes rectification,  if there are temporal limitations to rectification and what rectification  after colonialism would imply are discussed. The article ends with  an explication of the meaning of rectificatory justice, an argumentation  for why rectificatory justice is commendable and an assessment of  the demands of the Mau-Mau-fighters and the Herero.

Challenges to Malaysian Pluralism – the Policy of Affirmative Action2010In: Identity and Pluralism: Religion, Ethnicity, Values / [ed] Göran Collste, Linköpings universitet , 2010, 1, p. 47-60Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This publication contains presentations from the workshop “Identity and Pluralism” held at Linköping University in Sweden in June 2008.

¨The first article by Reevany Bustami, Ellisha Nasruddin and Sarmila Md Sum offers a critique of the ‘diversity and inclusion’ discussions in the present CSR discourse. In doing so, it seeks to expand the parameters of diversity to include the broader community as well as the supply chain networks within which companies exist. It also examines the issues of diversity and pluralism within the context of multi religious and multi ethnic Malaysian society as well as the continuing debates of affirmative action originated from Malaysia’s New Economic Policy (NEP).

In their essay on pluralism in Malaysian higher education Ellisha Nasruddin, Reevany Bustami and Ng Sen Fa discuss: 1) key future trends/alternatives within higher education and their cross-impacts; 2) how these trends/alternatives may create undesirable or desirable impact on ethnic pluralism; and 3) roadmap(s) for transformation within higher education vis-a-vis ethnic pluralism.

What is the role of Christian churches in Malaysia? Göran Wiking discusses the isolationist characteristics inherent in some Malaysian churches and denominations. Secondly, a brief analysis of the phenomenon is attempted: is this a genuine or just a perceived impediment to national integration? Are there in fact indicators to the contrary, whereby a certain degree of ethnic isolation can serve to strengthen identity and foster more wholesome members of the society at large?

Göran Collste discusses one aspect of Malaysian political pluralism; the policy of affirmative action. Affirmative action is favouring Malays and to be Muslim is one of the requirements for being beneficiary of affirmative action. He points at some problems for the policy of affirmative action in a time with increased religious tensions and an increased emphasis on religious affiliation as identity marker.

What are the conditions for a real dialogue between members of different ethnic and religious groups? Peter Gan argues that openness to transformation by the other is not strictly speaking an ethic of reducing the other to the self. Rather, it is an orientation that is predicated upon a symmetric self-other relation. In exploring this form of openness, the author attempts to unravel the intricacies embedded within the dialogic process which permeates interethnic, particularly interreligious relations.

The concept “secular state” is nowadays often used in both everyday discourse and scholarly debate. Often it comes with normative connotations; that the democratic state should be secular. However, the exact meaning of the concept is not clear. In his essay Marcus Agnafors examines different meanings of the concept “secular state”. He also discusses some arguments commonly presented in support of the idea that the state should, in some sense, be secular.

Finally, Anne-Christine Hornborg’s essay deals with the struggle for identity by an Indian tribe in Canada. She discusses the impact of the so called residential school on contemporary Mi’kmaq life worlds and identities, drawing on interviews from fieldworks conducted in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

    Abstract [en]

For liberalism, values such as respect, reciprocity, and tolerance should framecultural encounters in multicultural societies. However, it is easy to disregardthat power differences and political domination also influence the culturalsphere and the relations between cultural groups. In this essay, I focus onsome challenges for cultural pluralism. In relation to Indian political theoristRajeev Bhargava, I discuss the meaning of cultural domination and epistemicinjustice and their historical and moral implications. Bhargava argued thatas a consequence of colonialism, “indigenous cultures” were inferiorized, marginalized, and anonymized. Although cultures are often changing dueto external influences, I argue that epistemic injustice implies that a cultureis forced to subjection, disrespected, and considered as inferior and that itthreatens the dominated people’s epistemic framework, collective identity, and existential security. Finally, I refer to John Rawls’s theory of politicalliberalism as a constructive approach to avoid parochialism and Westerncultural domination.

    Abstract [en]

How can ethics be communicated in an age of globalisation? Is it possible to overcome cultural differences and agree on common values and principles that cross cultural borders? How does globalisation challenge ethics and established moral traditions? How are human rights justified in a global context?

This timely collection of essays responds directly to these questions. An international team of contributors pursue issues in ethics, information and communication that include both the classical question of the universality/contextuality of ethics and values, but also new challenges for communication relating to how values and norms are communicated and shared across cultural and political borders. The essays in this book explore theoretical questions of global ethics and ethical universalism, ethics and communication with reference to specific world views and religions, and the challenge of globalisation for ethical communication in particular social arenas

Ett läraretiskt dilemma2013In: Lärares etik och professionella arbete: skolan som moralisk praktik : [en vänbok till Gunnel Colnerud] / [ed] Helene Elvstrand, Karin Forslund Frykedal, Marcus Samuelsson, Robert Thornberg, Linköping: Linköpings universitet, Institutionen för beteendevetenskap och lärande , 2013, p. 21-25Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Globalisation involves both promising potentials and risks. It has the potential – through the spread of human rights, the migration of people and ideas, and the integration of diverse economies - to improve human wellbeing and enhance the protection of human rights worldwide. But globalisation also incurs risks: global environmental risks (such as global warming), the creation of new centres of power with limited legitimacy, a 'race to the bottom' regarding workers' safety and rights, risky journeys of thousands of migrants and not least growing global inequalities. Globalisation, therefore, is a key factor for today's discussions of justice.

As globalisation connects people, it also raises associated responsibilities between them. Until recently, the interest in justice among political philosophers and social ethicists was mainly focused on the nation state. However, this is no longer feasible. Since economic globalisation affects how wealth and power are distributed globally it has become indispensable to discuss social ethics in a global context and to develop principles of global justice. Global justice, therefore, entails an assessment of the benefits and burdens of the structural relations and institutional arrangements that constitute and govern globalisation

The academic discussion of global justice is vibrant and expanding. In my introduction I provide an overview of the discussions on global poverty, justice, cosmopolitanism and statism, migration, the capability approach and different dimensions of global justice.

Global Rectificatory Justice2015 (ed. 1)Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recent events have proved that colonialism has left indelible prints in history. In 2013, the British Foreign Secretary apologized and promised compensation for the atrocities in Kenyan detention camps in the 1950s and the same year the heads of governments of the Caribbean Community issued a declaration demanding reparation for the genocide of indigenous populations and for slavery and the slave trade during colonialism The discussion and literature on global justice has mainly focused on distributive justice. What are the implications of colonialism for a theory of global justice today? What does rectificatory justice mean in the light of colonialism? What does global rectificatory justice require in practice? In seeking to answer these questions, the author fills a significant gap in the literature on global justice.

Historisk rättvisa: Gottgörelse i en postkolonial tid2018Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Identity and Pluralism: Ethnicity, Religion and Values2010Collection (editor) (Other academic)

This volume contains a selection of papers that were originally presented at the International Conference on “Rethinking Realities, Reimagining Pluralism: Future Landscapes of Pluralism for Democratic Societies” held on 14-15 December 2010 at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysiar (UKM), Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia. This conference was jointly organised by the Institute of Ethnic Studies, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, CSR, Philanthropy and Transdisciplinary Action Group (CPTAG),Universiti Sains Malaysia and Linköping University, Sweden. It was also the final conference of the research project “Possibilities of Religious Pluralism”, a joint project involving researchers from Sweden and Malaysia and funded by SIDA (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency).

The papers in this volume have been revised and updated for purposes of publication. This publication would not have been possible without the encouragement, help and support of several people and parties. I would like to record my heartfelt thanks to the researchers involved in the joint research on “Possibilities of Religious Pluralism” and on which some of the papers in this volume are based. They are Reevany Bustami, Ellisha Nasruddin and Peter Gan from Malaysia and Edgar Almén, Annika Rabo and Hans Ingvar Roth from Sweden. I also thank Monica Påhlsson at the Centre for Applied Ethics, Linkoping University, for editorial assistance. Last but not least I would like to express my thanks and gratitude to Distinguished Professor Datuk Shamsul Amri Baharuddin, Founding Director of the Institute of Ethnic Studies and Professor Dato’ Sharifah Zaleha Syed Hassan, Principal Research Fellow of the Institute of Ethnic Studies for ensuring the speedy publication of this book.

Just war theory has always been a matter of controversy in the Christian tradition. How could war possibly be just according to a belief based on the teaching of ‘the Prince of Peace’? In the history of Christianity, one finds on the one side radical Christians arguing for pacifism, and on the other Church Fathers, bishops and theologians who elaborate a doctrine of just war.

I denna reviderade utgåva behandlas dessutom yrkesetiken mera ingående.
