Barn utsatta för sexuella övergrepp på nätet2017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The concept of active ageing comprises the maintenance of societal participation throughout the life span into old age. “Good” ageing in line with this activity paradigm develops into a starting point of social inequality rather than being its result. Based on the German Ageing Survey (DEAS) we investigated access to volunteering and to educational activities depending on social and spatial aspects of inequality. Societal participation is socially and spatially structured. Individuals from a lower social class are less often involved in educational activities or in volunteering. Moreover, individuals living in economically disadvantaged regions are less likely to participate than in economically strong regions. Disadvantages cumulate if low individual resources overlap with poor economic conditions in the living area. Measures to facilitate participation should be taken on the local level to enhance opportunities for volunteering and educational activities. This should help to sustainably increase the participation of individuals from lower social classes.

Misconduct, Marginality and Editorial Practices in Management, Business, and Economics Journals2016In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 11, no 7, article id e0159492Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Objectives

The paper presents data on the two problems of misconduct and marginality in management, business and economics (MBE) journals and their practices to combat these problems.

    Design

Data was collected in three phases. First, all publicly retracted papers in MBE journals were identified through keywords searches in 7 major databases (n = 1329 journals). Second, a focused survey was distributed to editors involved in such retractions (n = 64; response rate = 28%). Finally, a survey was administered to all active journals in the seven databases to collect data on editors’ perceptions and practices related to the two problems (n = 937, response rate = 31.8%). Frequency analyses, cross tabulations, and qualitative analyses of open answers were used to examine the data.

    Results

184 retracted papers in MBE journals were identified in 2005–2015 (no retraction was found before 2005). From 2005–2007 to 2012–2015, the number of retractions increased by a factor ten with an all-time high in 2015. The survey to journals with reported retractions illustrates how already a few cases of suspected misconduct put a strain on the editorial workload. The survey to all active journals revealed that 42% of the respondents had started to use software to screen all submitted papers, and that a majority recognized the problem of marginality, as indicated by salami-style submissions. According to some editors, reviewers easily spot such submissions whereas others argued that authors may submit thinly sliced papers in parallel to several journals, which means that this practice is only discovered post-publication. The survey question on ways to support creative contributions stimulated a rich response of ideas regarding editorial vision, engaged boards and developmental approaches. The study uses data from three specialized fields, but its findings may be highly relevant to many journals in the social sciences.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

From a citizenship and communicative perspective the aim of the dissertation is to examine and problematize the self-determination of disabled “users” during conversations taking place at “user-centred” team meetings. The meetings are organised by two habilitation centres, one for children and young people and one for adults. One disabled user and/or his/her relatives and professionals representing different institutions participate in the meetings. The study is based on discourse analysis of 18 observed and audiotaped team meetings held by ten different teams. The analyses show that the users exerted a more or less restricted influence on the organisation of the conversations. This varied with the organisation of the conversations and to the extent that the users participated actively by identifying their own problems and future goals. Hence, a certain conflict between an “ideal” type of self-determination and the users’ ability/willingness to live up to the demands that this kind of self-determination makes on them was revealed. This conflict gave rise to situations in which dilemmas between selfdetermination and paternalism appeared. By analysing how these situations were handled it was found that the participants in meetings without participating users accounted for their opinions and decisions concerning the treatment of the users by referring either to interpretations of the user’s preferences, which were based on the user’s behaviour in everyday life, or to their own beliefs of what would benefit the user. In meetings with participating users, the other participants handled the situations by steering the discussions in directions the user may not have chosen him-/herself. These discursive strategies were more or less paternalistic. In the dissertation it is discussed what other possible strategies exist that could increase the users’ self-determination. The result is also related to the “spoken” and social citizenship that the users are considered to exercise, as well as to other possible meanings of social citizenship.

    Abstract [en]

The aim is to examine the discursive organization of “user-centred” team meetings in the Swedish rehabilitation sector. The “users” are aged between 4 and 30 and have been ascribed different kinds of impairments. The teams consist of one user and/or her/his relatives and different professionals. The analysis is primarily based on transcriptions of 18 audiotaped team meetings held by 10 different teams and focuses on two dimensions of dominance in interaction: the amount of talk and topic control. The findings point to professional dominance, but parents also have a great influence on the topic control. The degree of participation and the control of topics of the users who participate in the meetings vary, but most of the users become involved primarily by responding to the questions and suggestions of professionals and parents. In order to increase the users' control of the interactions the participants need to continuously discuss the organization of the conversations. The findings are related to complicating aspects of the conversations, including institutionalization, representation difficulties, varying communicative abilities, and expectations of expertise and adult liabilities.

    Abstract [en]

Results from analyses of interactions in 'user-centred' meetings within the Swedish rehabilitation sector are reported. Transcripts of team meetings are used to discern situations in which dilemmas of self-determination versus paternalism may possibly need to be treated when the 'user' with impairment is to exercise his/her social citizenship. The analyses illustrate how the liberal ideal of self-determination makes certain demands on the 'user'. These demands are categorised as 'physical presence', 'interpretable voice', 'purposeful voice', 'sincere voice' and 'realisable voice'. It is argued that dilemmas of self-determination are impossible to avoid completely. To deal with the complexity of implementing self-determination, it is important to try to adjust the preparations and the organisation of the meetings, increase user control of services provided, combine individualised support with collective and political action, and allow expressions of different models of democracy. The possibility of appreciating interdependence and justifying paternalistic actions also needs to be acknowledged.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To describe discursive strategies used by different professionals and parents to handle dilemmas of self-determination versus paternalism during six 'user-centred' team meetings in the Swedish rehabilitation sector. The dilemmas arise when the users' responses do not fully meet the demands of the liberal ideal of self-determination.

Method: Three cases are used to illustrate three discursive strategies that have been found by means of discourse analysis of transcriptions of the audio-recorded meetings. Four teams consisting of one user each participate in the study. The users have been ascribed physical and/or cognitive disabilities and their ages vary between 14 and 30.

Results: The dilemmas were never made explicit. Parents and professionals performed a kind of paternalistic steering termed 'challenging the user's response', 'substituting for the user', or 'dropping the user's response'.

Conclusions: The least paternalistic steering includes making the dilemma explicit and offering the user the opportunity of sharing the responsibility for the handling of the situation. However, due to the complexity of the interactions no strategy can be found to either completely prevent the occurrence of dilemmatic situations, or definitely maintain the user's self-determination during dilemmatic situations. Paternalism may occasionally be a just way of enhancing future autonomy.

Audio recordings of “user-centered” team meetings are used toinvestigate how participants discursively account for decisions and opinionsabout the everyday treatment of five non-participating “users” with severecognitive impairments. The meetings take place in the Swedish rehabilitationsector and the users’ ages vary. Människan och havet: En kvalitativ studie på tre självbiografiska skildringar om att växa upp under ogynnsamma villkor2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Meningsfull sysselsättning: En kvalitativ studie om begreppets tolkning2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article investigates children’s participation and sense of belonging from the perspective of unaccompanied children, based on two qualitative research projects with unaccompanied children in Sweden and Finland. The results show that the unaccompanied children’s own understanding of their participation and belonging in different positions was fluid; for instance, the borders between childhood and adulthood, and striving for independence or wanting to be cared for by adults were flexible, allowing the children’s movement within and between the categories.

    Abstract [sv]

Becoming aware of the grand social challenges: how an international and interdisciplinary educational context may broaden students perspectives on human rights and public health2017In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 125-138Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The understanding of contemporary social problems and challenges in an international and national perspective is a significant issue for social work because of globalisation and social problems are too complex to handle by single actors themselves. The need for interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration is important. This paper focuses on experiences from an Erasmus Intensive Programme with the title Human Rights, Public Health and Social Service Challenges on Local Government in the Nordic-Baltic Sea Area. Social work students from different countries interacted with students from other disciplines such as political science, psychology and economy to discuss common challenges and solutions in this field. The analysis of the findings shows students reflect upon human rights issues as universal rights and how challenges presented by contextual differences in preconditions for everyday lifebetween the countries, are reflected from different disciplines/professional perspectives. The paper argues that international and interdisciplinary programmes, where students get the opportunity to meet and to work with overarching and transnational issues, have a great potential for engaging students in global development in a rapidly changing world. ABSTRAKTForstaelsen for samtida sociala problem och internationella ochnationella utmaningar ar viktiga fragor for socialt arbete. Kursens namn var Rights, Public Health and Social Service Challenges on Local Government in the Nordic-Baltic Sea Area.

Resistance to fear of child birth and stability of mother-child bond2020In: Early Child Development and Care, ISSN 0300-4430, E-ISSN 1476-8275, Vol. 190, no 2, p. 175-184Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In order to examine (1) the stability of the mother-child-bond and (2) associations between mother-child-bonding and aspects of maternal-well-being, pregnant women (N = 170) completed measures on well-being and mother-child-bonding at two antepartum and two postpartum time points. We found relatively weak associations between mother-child-bonding at 20 weeks of gestation and mother-child-bonding at 6 months postpartum. Fear of childbirth was weakly, but statistically significantly associated with mother-child-bonding at 6 weeks (but not at 6 months) postpartum. Correlations between antepartum general well-being and social support, on the one hand, and mother-child-bonding, on the other, failed to reach statistical significance. Women with a partner had a better mother-child-bonding at 36 weeks of gestation and 6 months postpartum, than women without a partner, and older women had better mother-child-bonding at 20 weeks of gestation, than younger women. Our findings thus suggest that mother-child-bonding is not a very stable phenomenon, but it is quite robust against potential negative influences of poor maternal mental health.

    Abstract [en]

Suicide among Japanese adolescents is a popular topic in the media. However, a comparison of data and research from both countries, tracking the changes from the 1950s to the 1990s, shows that Japan's present per capita rate of juvenile suicide is lower than that of Germany. Therefore, it seems that cultural interpretations of suicide are responsible for the impression of high suicide rates among Japanese adolescents. This article reviews several recurring arguments about the context of juvenile suicide; for example, suicide as a reaction to a rigid social system or to pressure in the schools. The recently discussed connection between suicide and bullying (ijime) will be given special attention. Different types of media, such as newspapers, popular publications, and scientific reports, address suicide in specific ways. There is a conformity among the international perspectives which is clarified by a review of the research papers. Such a review also elucidates the irrelevance of national stereotypes.

The influence of sociocultural and environmental factors on the adolescents' life and development: Japanese youth from a Western readers perspective2008In: Asia Europe Journal: Intercultural Studies in the Social Sciences and Humanities, ISSN 1610-2932, E-ISSN 1612-1031, Vol. 5, no 4, p. 499-517Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article provides an analysis of phenomena of youth in Japan by means of a literature review. A rich literature on Japanese youth has been published during the last decade, which provides us with information on a variety of topics. By focussing on sources published in Western languages a selection is drawn to research presented as relevant to Western readers. Japan is known as a highly dynamic society. How do children and youth adjust to the ever-changing social and cultural environment? And how can we identify and analyse the most relevant sociocultural and environmental factors and their relationships to each other, which obviously have a strong influence on the adolescents' life and development? These questions can guide us when structuring the available information according to Bronfenbrenner's ecological perspective of human development. I will illustrate findings from recent journal articles on central topics like the school to work transition, recent educational reforms and youth culture and discuss these on the background of context knowledge on Japanese youth from former theoretical and empirical studies. © Springer-Verlag 2007.

Det heterogena åldrandet: Vad kan begreppet tredje åldern tillföra?2011In: Tredje åldern: Sociala aspekter och medborgarskap / [ed] Kerstin Gynnerstedt, Maria Wolmesjö, Malmö: Gleerup , 2011, 1, p. 49-62Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Child abuse and neglect (CAN) are likely to have negative consequences on health; however, for oral health, studies on associated outcomes are sparse. The purpose of this study was to assess oral health and oral health behaviors in relation to suspected CAN among children being investigated by the Swedish Social Services. The material comprised data from the Social Services and dental records; the sample, 86 children and 172 matched controls. The children in the study group had a higher prevalence of dental caries than the control group; in addition, levels of non-attendance and dental avoidance were high, as was parental failure to promote good oral health. We found four factors that, taken together, indicated a high probability of being investigated because of suspected CAN: prevalence of dental caries in primary teeth, fillings in permanent teeth, dental health service avoidance, and referral to specialist pediatric dentistry clinics. If all four factors were present, the cumulative probability of being investigated was 0.918. In conclusion, there is a high prevalence of dental caries, irregular attendance, and a need for referral a pediatric dental clinic among Swedish children under investigation due to suspected CAN. Social context is an important factor in assessing the risk of developing dental caries, the inclination to follow treatment plans, and the prerequisites for cooperation during treatment. Routinely requesting dental records during an investigation would provide important information for social workers on parental skills and abilities to fulfill the basic needs of children.

    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on communication between adults with severe acquired brain damage and persons close to them. The purpose of the study is to describe, on the basis of accounts given by caregivers, the caregivers are referred to as relatives and personnel, how communication is manifested and to provide a theoretical description of the factors that facilitate or hinder communication. Eleven persons with severe brain damage are included in the study along with their caregivers. The brain damage has been caused by stroke, traumatic brain injury or lack of oxygen and in all cases has resulted in severe language impairment and cognitive disabilities. Age at time of injury varies from 16 to 64 years. The empirical material consists of interviews and video film. The theoretical framework applied is Symbolic Interactionism and the method used is Grounded Theory.

The results are presented in the form of an empirically grounded theoretical model of how communication is manifested in the context of the study. This model comprises the core process and the communication keys. The keys are the introductory and maintaining factors as well as the confidence factor. The confidence factor has great significance; without it, communication cannot be established. The results are discussed in relation to theories of social communication and the term communicative ability. It is expected that application of the theory can make it easier for caregivers to interact with persons with severe communicative disability.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates how a group of 21 young people narrate and reflect on their lives within the framework of long interviews. The participants were interviewed at the ages of 15, 17, 22 and 25 years. The interviews are analysed as life-stories, a theoretical and methodological perspective which illuminates the interviewees ways of interpreting and constructing meaning in their lives.

The study has two aims: firstly it is a contemporary study with the goal of investi-gating what the conditions for entering adulthood are, and how young people relate to becoming an adult. Secondly it is a study of method which places great importance on how life-stories are constructed situationally and culturally. These two perspectives are linked by the strong connections that exist between the young people’s way of understanding themselves and the life-stories they construct. The work is concentrated to three main questions: how experience and expectation interplay in the participants stories, how their stories relate to dominant cultural narratives, and how meanings of becoming an adult are constructed and change over time in their life-stories.

The process of becoming an adult mainly involves the search for identity, autonomy and place in society. The study demonstrates how this can be understood as a process where experiences from the past interplay with expectations for the future. It highlights the complexity and diversity of the transition from youth to adulthood, and the fact that meanings of adulthood are neither self-evident nor definite. Life-stories as told by the participants arise to a large degree in negotiation with narrative life-scripts. These scripts structure the stories and provide a basis for evaluation of their own lives. The study also points out that young people´s life stories are part of a double hermeneutic process where a “Grand Narrative” about the individualised society is interpreted and reproduced.

    Abstract [en]

The digitalizing has affected the community as a whole, but current research about social work and its digitalization is lacking. Because of which, we have chosen to study and discuss this area - empirical and theoretical. This study aims to analyze and compare social services municipal websites regarding information about financial aid related to the current legislation, media theory and the importance of language. This study scrutinizes, through equality and availability, the usage of e-services regarding financial aid in municipals.

The empirical data, which is gathered from ten Swedish municipal websites regarding financial aid, is analyzed by qualitative content analysis complemented by quantification, through frequency analysis. From the analysis a domain emerged; availability, and two themes; information and communication.

This study has its base in The second media age, McDonaldization, semiotics and isomorfism. The theory of semiotics has contributed to a review regarding latent and manifest information, isomorfism to explain differences and similarities, and McDonaldization to explore efficiency.

The result of the study indicates both similarities and differences among the websites. Differences were found concerning availability, intelligibility, and the usage of legislation. Similarities tend to exist in which the information on the websites were based on Social Services act, the municipals described the application process similar, and the information was limited to Swedish language.

The result of the study discuss availability regarding communication and information. The result relates to equality through access to e-services within social services financial aid and opportunities to empowerment. The result of this study specify the need of proceeded research concerning digitalizing and e-services within social services, among other things on user and personnel perspective.

    Abstract [en]

The overall purpose of this interview-study is to increase the knowledge and understanding of persons with Asperger syndrome. For each participant has common and unique aspects been described. The ambition has been to illuminate their perspective of their situation in life and develop the understanding of their quality of life. The participants’ experiences of their diagnosis, and its consequences in their life has been studied. Several aspects of their everyday life have been reported, i.e. schooling, occupational problems, spare time and interests. The results show that the participants may experience their life as hard, as seemingly uncomplicated chores prove to be exhausting. Not fitting with the norms they believe other people in society have, is one aspect of experienced difference.

The diagnostic process has proved to be an important event in the life of the participants. It has been described as a way of taking control over one’s life. Their experienced difference may be acceptable to them, if it is in the form of an Asperger diagnosis. Experiences of chock, denial and ambivalence after receiving their Asperger diagnosis were also reported. However, all participants have accepted their diagnosis.

The participants’ biologically different way of being has given them consequences. Both psychological and social consequences have been illustrated, as well as interpersonal and societal. Disability research theory (Danermark, 2005; Rönnberg & Melinder, 2007) and Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory (1979) have been used to illustrate the outcome of a diagnosis like Asperger syndrome. The study shows the participants’ experiences of their different way of being.

    Abstract [en]

In a series of articles from the Stockholm Spinal Cord Injury Study (SSCIS), the health status of a near-total regional SCI population comprising 353 subjects has been investigated. The present study describes the psycho-social and financial consequences of SCI in this group. It is based on a level-of-living survey that has been used annually on 8000-14,000 Swedes since 1974. The health-focused version of this survey was used for data collection in the subset of 326 subjects in the SSCIS that were residents of the Greater Stockholm area. The normative material consisted of 1978 interviews of residents of the same area, provided by the Swedish Bureau of Statistics. The results show that SCI subjects, although provided with basic material commodities up to par with the general population, have less financial reserves and more frequently express worry about their finances. Less than half of the subjects are gainfully employed, when part-time jobs are also included. Social activities are more restricted, and more centered on the core social network. Several items in the survey point to a preoccupation with personal rather than public matters. We feel that these factors, at least to some degree, are consequential to separation from the workplace, with resulting disadvantageous financial and social effects. Intensified vocational rehabilitation efforts might thus be justified from both an economic and a psycho-social point of view.

Postponed Plans: Prospective Memory and Intellectual Disability2007Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with prospective memory (PM) in individuals with intellectual disability. The term refers to planning and executing actions that cannot be performed immediately and have to be stored in memory and retrieved either within a specified timeframe or to be associated with a specific event. Following research questions were explored:

    1. Does prospective memory performance in the intellectual disability group differ quantitatively and qualitatively compared to a control group of individuals without intellectual disability? (Paper I – II)

    2. What are the relations between prospective memory, working memory and episodic memory in individuals with intellectual disability, and how are these relations different from the relations found in individuals without intellectual disability? (Paper II)

    3. What conditions constitute compatibility between encoding and retrieval of prospective memory tasks? (Paper III)

    4. In what way might weak binding contribute to PM failure? (Paper IV)

    5. Is it possible to identify high and low PM-performing groups of individuals with intellectual disability? (Paper II)

The results of the studies demonstrated that individuals with intellectual disability commit more PM errors than individuals in the control group, despite similarities in self-rated memory. Pictures as PM cues improved PM performance in comparison to words in both groups. This may be important primarily for recognition of the PM cue, particularly in the intellectual disability group. As to working memory capacity, it also shows a relation to both PM performance and binding performance in cognitively demanding situations (e.g., tasks with multiple parallel PM tasks). Furthermore, it was found that binding is related to PM performance in the intellectual disability group as there is a relationship between feature errors and recognition of cues, though not retrieving the correct intention. Finally, time reproduction was found to be weak in the intellectual disability group compared to the control group. This may be due to, for example, weak episodic memory and limited strategies for solving this type of task. These findings are discussed in relation to PM training and PM aids.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between prospective memory, working memory, retrospective memory and self-rated memory capacity in adults with and without intellectual disability. Prospective memory was investigated by means of a picture-based task. Working memory was measured as performance on span tasks. Retrospective memory was scored as recall of subject performed tasks. Self-ratings of memory performance were based on the prospective and retrospective memory questionnaire. Individuals with intellectual disability performed at a lower level on most tasks and the task performances were to a higher degree correlated compared to persons without intellectual disability. The groups did not differ in self-rated memory scores. Distinct prospective memory cues (pictures, compared to words) were essential for prospective memory performance in persons with intellectual disability. The results are discussed with respect to how working memory capacity relates to prospective memory and retrospective memory performance.

Between zero tolerance and damage control. Policy and parental strategies concerning teenagers and alcohol2018In: Families, Relationships and Societies, ISSN 2046-7435, E-ISSN 2046-7443, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 55-69Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on the distribution of responsibility between teenagers and parents in relation to teenagers’ alcohol consumption. It does so by contrasting the way in which responsibility is ascribed to parents in public guidelines on underage drinking with parents’ posts made to an online discussion board. In Swedish alcohol policy on underage drinking, to a large extent the replacement of state control over the accessibility of alcohol with individual responsibility translates into parental responsibility. Further, in national information campaigns, parents have been urged to stand their ground and maintain a zero-tolerance stance in order to minimise underage drinking. Like policymakers, parents who engaged in online discussions on teenagers and alcohol were concerned about the effects of underage drinking. But in addition to the national alcohol policy goals of postponing the alcohol debut and minimising underage drinking, parents were also concerned about the effects of their drinking rules on their relationship with their teenagers, and about the long-term effects of their parenting strategies on their children’s later drinking habits as adults. And in contrast to public policy and national information campaigns, not all parents ascribed to themselves the power to influence their teenage children’s drinking.

Preservation of the child’s background in in- and intercountry adoption2009In: The International Journal of Children's Rights, ISSN 0927-5568, E-ISSN 1571-8182, Vol. 17, no 2, p. 235-260Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The point of departure of the present article is the child's right to preservation of her/his ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic background in adoption, as stipulated in the CRC and the Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption. The article seeks to analyse the various meanings attributed to preservation of the child's background in in- and intercountry adoption and in different national contexts. The main focus is on the seldom-studied perspective of one of the major sending countries in intercountry adoption: India. Five representatives of two non-governmental adoption agencies and one governmental agency in addition to six Indian adoptive parents have been interviewed about their views on the significance of the child's background in adoption. In our analysis, we show that preservation of a child's background is perceived to be in conflict with other interests of the child, such as gaining a position in her/his adoptive family equal to that of a biological child and being loved unconditionally. In contrast to the general portrayal of Indian adoption applicants as being selective regarding the child's religious background and skin colour, agency representatives as well as adoptive parents endeavoured to distinguish themselves from this portrayal by emphasizing the irrelevance of the child's background.

Displays of parent suitability in adoption assessment reports2017In: Child & Family Social Work, ISSN 1356-7500, E-ISSN 1365-2206, Vol. 22, no S1, p. 53-63Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Through adoption, the state actively contributes to creating families. It therefore also assumes the role of guarantor of the child’s best interests in the adoption process, which entails assessing the suitability of presumptive adoptive parents. In the present article, we use the concluding sections of assessment reports on applicants for intercountry adoption in Sweden to answer the following question: What must be said about an individual or a couple in order for her/them to be seen as a suitable adoptive parent? We thus assume that report conclusions serve to display parent suitability to their audiences. The assessment aligns with Swedish national adoption guidelines, and the study shows how the assessment handbook comes to serve as a catalogue of arguments that not only define good parenthood, but also outline a way of life that is suitable for parenthood. The analysis illustrates how valid arguments for granting consent to adopt refer to three layers of suitability. They include not only the applicants’ insights into and knowledge about adoption in particular and children in general, but also their conventional and orderly life, i.e. a life free from distractions that could hinder a wholehearted focus on children and family life.

Adoption. Samarbete för rättslikhet2011In: Barnen och välfärdspolitiken: nordiska barndomar 1900-2000 / [ed] Andresen A, Gardarsdottir Ó, Janfelt M, Lindgren C, Markkola P, Söderlind I, Stockholm: Dialogos Förlag, 2011, 1, p. 216-270Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

When a family comes into existence through adoption, the state has a crucial influence. Adoption therefore gives a unique opportunity to study a societal vision of the good family. That is the point of departure for “A Real Family”. The study spans the period from 1917, when the first Adoption Act was passed, to 1975, when international adoption was established. Three periods – the 1920s, the 1950s, and the 1970s – have been studied in detail. The investigation concerns the policy on adoption matters, handbooks for officials administering adoption cases, and the handling of adoption cases in Stockholm.

Adoption has been studied as a historical, societal phenomenon, and the focus has been on the public regulation of family formation. Through the principle of “the child’s best interest”, the control of family formation has been distinct, but simultaneously indistinct, since the meaning of the concept has always been open to interpretation. Through an analysis of the meanings ascribed to “the child’s best interest”, it has been possible to reveal the norms for adoption. The idea has served as the key to adoption’s “rules for realness”, i. e. the often implicit criteria that define what “a real family” is.

In the 1920s, what gave the adoptive family legitimacy was the will to assume responsibility for the child. Parents’ involvement and devotion distinguished a family. In the 1950s a real family was a normal family, a “typical” family in a normative sense. The adoptive family had to correspond to an ideal version of the biologically based family. The establishment of normality as a “rule for realness” depended on the reinterpretation of the meaning of adoption, which became clear with the introduction of full adoption in 1958. The adoptive family, which had previously been a supplementary family, became instead a replacement family, and social relations could fully take the place of biology as a basis for family ties. At the start of the 1970s a real family was an open and social family. It was supposed to be a platform for the child who was to acquire a place of its own in society. The “rules for realness” within adoption policy and practice, during the studied period, can thus be defined as devotion  normality  sociality.

Here and now - there and then: Narrative time and space in intercountry adoptees' stories about background, origin and roots2014In: Qualitative Social Work, ISSN 1473-3250, E-ISSN 1741-3117, Vol. 13, no 4, p. 539-554Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Intercountry adoption policy emphasizes openness in relation to adoptees’ background. However, because intercountry adoption is a complex web of relations including individuals, institutions and countries, it is impossible to foresee what background, origin and roots will mean to the adopted individual. The present article examines what meanings adoptees themselves ascribe to background, origin and roots. A total of 22 internationally adopted men and women participated in focus group conversations. The participants were invited to discuss their diverse experiences and opinions on these matters and their stories were analyzed from a narrative perspective. The analysis focuses how time and space were made significant in narratives about background, origin and roots. Two contrasting stories – the here-and-now narrative and the there-and-then narrative – are discerned, but further analysis of the narrative space and time dimensions shows a much more complex pattern beyond these extremes. Adoptee narratives characterized by an open time dimension deal with what could have happened, alternative lives, and the analysis shows how these alternative lives are storied and valued. Furthermore, when adoptees tell their stories about background and roots, ‘there’, i. e. the birth country, is ascribed different meanings. Our analysis shows that the categorization of space as wide or narrow, in the sense of collective or personal, respectively, is useful in understanding the different approaches to background and roots. Based on the present results, we suggest that social workers may wish to organize their counseling along the time and space dimensions of adoptees’ narratives.

    Abstract [en]

There has been a decline in childrens use of active school transportation (AST) while there is also limited research concerning AST in winter conditions. This study aimed to explore the prerequisites and experiences of schoolchildren and parents participating in an empowerment- and gamification-inspired intervention to promote students AST in winter conditions. Methods: Thirty-five students, who were aged 12-13 years, and 34 parents from the north of Sweden participated in the study. Data were collected using photovoice and open questions in a questionnaire and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: The results show that involvement and togetherness motivated the students to use AST. In addition, during the project, the parents changed to have more positive attitudes towards their childrens use of AST. The students reported that using AST during wintertime is strenuous but rewarding and imparts a sense of pride. Conclusion: Interventions for increasing students AST in winter conditions should focus on the motivational aspects for both children and parents. For overcoming parental hesitation with regards to AST during winter, addressing their concerns and empowering the students are key factors. To increase the use of AST all year around, targeting the challenges perceived during the winter is especially beneficial.

The relationship between counselors technical skills, clients in-session verbal responses, and outcome in smoking cessation treatment2017In: Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, ISSN 0740-5472, E-ISSN 1873-6483, Vol. 77, p. 141-149Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The technical component of Motivational Interviewing (MI) posits that client language mediates the relationship between counselor techniques and subsequent client behavioral outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine this hypothesized technical component of MI in smoking cessation treatment in more depth. Method: Secondary analysis of 106 first treatment sessions, derived from the Swedish National Tobacco Quitline, and previously rated using the Motivational Interviewing Sequential Code for Observing Process Exchanges (MI SCOPE) Coders Manual and the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity code (MITI) Manual, version 3.1. The outcome measure was self-reported 6-month continuous abstinence at 12-month follow-up. Results: Sequential analyses indicated that clients were significantly more likely than expected by chance to argue for change (change talk) following MI-consistent behaviors and questions and reflections favoring change. Conversely, clients were more likely to argue against change (sustain talk) following questions and reflections favoring status-quo. Parallel mediation analysis revealed that a counselor technique (reflections of client sustain talk) had an indirect effect on smoking outcome at follow-up through client language mediators. Conclusions: The study makes a significant contribution to our understanding of how MI works in smoking cessation treatment and adds further empirical support for the hypothesized technical component in MI. The results emphasize the importance of counselors avoiding unintentional reinforcement of sustain talk and underline the need for a greater emphasis on the direction of questions and reflections in MI trainings and fidelity measures. (Un)bearable freedom: Exploring the becoming of the artist in education, work and family life2016Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is to explore and understand three important social contexts for the becoming of an artistic subjectivity: education, work and family life. The empirical data consist of interview material with alumni from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, staff of the institute, and a survey material from the Swedish National Artists Organization (KRO/KIF). Generally, the thesis employs a theory of conflicting understandings of labour as well as the importance of discourses and narratives for the formation of subjects. The contribution of the thesis is the analysis of a continuing conflict between being and working as an artist actualized in the social contexts explored. The arts education encouraged a romanticized understanding of art as unrelated to market value, which clashed against societal norms of career progression, survival and supporting a family. This conflict informed the subjective way in which the respondents related to their activities as artists, workers and relatives. The concept of freedom can be understood as mediating this conflict in the sense of forming the basis of attraction to the arts but also a burden as it relates to insecurity. The analysis found several subjective representations of the artist that indicate strong norms of individuality and self-direction, understood as the outcome of a working life fraught with personal responsibility for coping with insecurity. As such, the thesis is part of ongoing research on changes in working life towards non-standard and sometimes precarious working conditions.

    Abstract [en]

Higher education can function as an important marker of seriousness in fields characterized by diffuse professional standards. Using the case of a fine arts institute, the article outlines the role of higher education in promoting the interconnection of a professional and individual subjectivity; being an artist is not merely something one does but something one is. By primarily examining interview material, it explores how an ideal position of individual self-reliance relates to the alumni of the institute. Some respondents were not “in sync” with this position and needed to seek out other resources in order to construct themselves as professional artists. However, they seldom rejected the kind of subjectivity promoted by their education, but rather renegotiated it as part of the uncertainty of their chosen field.

    Abstract [en]

Artists are known to manage low income and work insecurity by holding multiple jobs. Through an analysis of interview data, this study explores the narratives of 20 visual artists in Sweden regarding breadwinning work. Positive and negative experiences of such work are analyzed in relation to the artists’ work behavior and identity as either ‘bohemian’ or ‘entrepreneurial.’ Breadwinning work may be seen by artists as either enabling autonomy from the market or hindering the construction of a professional identity, depending on these behaviors/identities. However, conditions such as low wage, temporary contracts, and low control over work hours ultimately decides artist’s experiences of breadwinning work. This article adds to the existing knowledge on artistic labour markets by highlighting the role of multiple job holding in mediating between an understanding of the bohemian art for art’s sake artist role and the entrepreneurial role of the artist.

    Abstract [en]

This article explores contemporary Swedish artists’ experiences of work–family conflict from a gender perspective. Sweden is a critical case as the country is well-known for its official gender equality policy stressing the importance of possibilities for women and men to balance family and paid work. The analysis of survey data collected from 2,025 Swedish professional visual artists shows their self-reported levels of work–family conflict to be generally low. Women artists, however, were found to experience more conflict than men artists. The results suggest that women face more pressure from the demands of both work and home than men. While an OLS regression analysis showed a relationship between the artists’ parenting responsibility and their perceived level of work–family conflict overall, for men artists this was so only at the second child. An unequal division of housework had negative consequences for women artists’ work–family balance, while the effect of being single was in this regard more pronounced among men than among women. This suggests that men, to a greater extent than women, depend on a spouse to handle the balance between work and family. Although much has happened regarding the gender issues in the art world, patterns of dependence and traditional gender roles in work and caring thus continue to persist, limiting individuals’ choices and actual ability to work as an artist, especially for women.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The political debate concerning parent education and parenting support between 1964 and 2009 has been scrutinized in this study in the light of the development of and changes in the welfare state. The investigation is based upon the analysis of official government inquiries and parliamentary papers dealing with parent education and parenting support. This study analyzes the different choices in the organization of welfare relevant to children and the family for which political actors have argued, and it examines the views on the relations between children, parents, family and the welfare state that were expressed in the argumentation. Parent education and parenting support aim at changing the living conditions of children by means of the parents. The study shows that the interest in this type of investment has been shared by both the political left and center-right, but from different arguments and political visions on how welfare for children and families with children should be organized, as well as from different views of the role of parent education and parenting support in the welfare.

Negotiating Parenting Support: Welfare Politics in Sweden between the 1960s and the 2000s2018In: Social Policy and Society, ISSN 1474-7464, E-ISSN 1475-3073, Vol. 17, no 3, p. 491-502Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Parent education surfaced as a political question in Sweden in the 1960s and support for parents has since remained on the political agenda. Despite different views on the ideal relationship between the welfare state, the family and children, support for parents has been advocated by parties from all over the political spectrum. By tracing the political debate, this article addresses the question of how the notion of support for parents was adapted to different political ideas, ideologies and ways of defining the relationship between state, family and children from the 1960s until the 2000s in Sweden. We analyse the arguments that different political parties offered and the varying meanings attributed to terms like ‘parent education’ (föräldrautbildning) and ‘parenting support’ (föräldrastöd) during three different phases in the transformation of the Swedish welfare state: the final period of its expansion in the 1960s and 1970s; the economic crisis and retrenchments of welfare services in the 1990s; and the era of individual responsibility in the 2000s. Support for parents has been actualised as a solution to different social and political problems and the notions of parent education and parenting support have proven the capacity to accommodate different political ideas, ideologies and visions.

    Abstract [en]

"Perhaps I was drawn to the language of exhaustion because I was travelling to my doctor for a health control on the 4th of November, the day when I read the book and made this first diary note. Or maybe Frichot’s book is so thought provoking in the way it unexpectedly awakens the reader’s attention to the richness of theoretical language that exhaustion offers that it speaks to many readers who will feel that they have waited a long time for this book to be written?" This article is Mona Livholts reading of Hélène Frichot's book Creative Ecologies. Theorizing the Practice of Architecture published by Bloomsbury 2019. The article is published in the inaugural issue of Reading Writing Quarterly (December 2019), where Professor Jane Rendell invites two writers to read each other’s work, to explore ways of ‘reading writing’ that practice ‘reviewing’ from a situated perspective and re-write the genre and texture of the ‘critical review essay’.
