    Konst i kontext2007Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Det visuella fältet: studier i visuell kultur2005Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

At the instigation of Professor Bengt-Erik Eriksson and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Linköping University, researchers from three faculties and several disciplines gathered for a seminar in November 2004 with the commission to discuss the possibility offorming a common research p latform for studies of visualization, visuality and visual culture.

The outcome of this meeting between technologists, medical researchers, social scientists and humanities scholars was the founding of a permanent seminar group that was to meet regularly in order to make an inventory of  and to present ongoing research wirhin the given field and to write applications for research grants. Visual accessibility, Visualization of dynamiccourses, Remediation and Yisualization and learning are some of the possible common projects that the group called VVV has identified over the three years of its existence.

Chaired by Dr Anna Sparrman, a senior researeher at the department of Child Studies at the Tema Institute, the VVVgroup arranged a two-day Iong workshop under the heading Images, Science and Knowledge at Villa Fridhem south of Norrkö ping in October 2007.

The aim of the workshop was to discuss the use of images in various scientific practices, focusing not only on the usage bur also on the different ways of defining visualization and on the various theoretical approaches to the concept image. Four key-note leetures and eight shorter presentations of current projects showed clearly the diversity of the use of images in scientific practices and need for a continuous discussion about scientific imagery and the prospeers of a common understanding of what an image really is.

The invited key-note speakers were Professor W.]. T. Mitchell, university of Chicago and Dr Thomas Parathe and Dr Yvonne Eriksson, both from Mälardalen University College. White Professor Mitchells two leetures circled around the general problem of defining an image and the contemporary use of images to comment on and form political opinions instantly, Dr Parathe and Dr Eriksson had more specific approaches, pictures as tools for navigation and tactile perception and tactile understanding of images. The shorter presentations ranged from Haptic visualization of proteins to nations of visuality in a Swedish campaign against food advertising to children.

All leetures and presentations of the workshop were thoroughly documented. The speakers' manuscripts, notes made during the proceedings and interviews with the key-note speakers eonstirute the basis for this publication which hopefully will function as a point of departure for further discussion. Accordingly we want to thank Anna Öst, Marcus Mattsson, Christina Lagneby and Alexandra Uhrefalk who with accuracy and zeal carried out their tasks as secretaries.

Streck i rörelse: visuell retorik i serier och tecknad film2006Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This report discusses ways to look upon teaching of literature as a social and cultural transmission of (1) a literary canon and (2) certain ways to 'handle' literature and give it meaning. This mainly theoretical discussion is concluded with an account of  the historical background of teaching of literature in Sweden, and a description of how a poem of Viktor Rydberg has been interpreted in educational contexts in the period 1900-1970.

On Communication. 4 / Om kommunikation. 4: Selected papers from a seminar arranged by the Department of Communication Studies, on 3-4 June, 19861987Conference proceedings (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This report contains eight papers presented at the interdisciplinaryseminar arranged by the Department of Communication Studies, University of Linköping, on 3-4 June, 1986.

The papers deal in different ways with the problem of distributing knowledge or with methods of describing and improving individualcompetence and skills in communicative situations, especially in classroom interaction. Three of the papers are concerned with knowledge and competence as being mainly social and cultural phenomena - the social transmission of knowledge, educational drama as a means of improv ing social competence, and music reviews as exponents of certain cultural communities. One paper discusses instructions as one way of disseminating knowledge and competence. The last four contributions discuss different levels of knowledgeand competence in various educational settings, such as teacher and pupil interaction, and the ways in which different perspectives on language  may cause misunderstandings and other communicative problems in language learning.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to investigate under what conditions, to what purposes and, above all, with what content literature was taught in Swedish upper sixth form grammar schools' mother tongue teaching during 1865-1968.

The investigation has, metaphorically speaking, aimed at mapping out the course of "life" which literature has lived within the framework of this teaching.

The investigation's main source of material has been some 150 essays concerning literary subjects, written by grammar school students during 1871-1964. The essays, which arc kept in archives, were part of the Swedish academic grammar school examination, the examination which was required for university entrance. The essay material has been supplemented with investigations of official terms of reference and ordinances concerning education, pedagogical debate and leading Swedish literary research.

In chapter 1, a brief theoretical background and an account of current research in the area is given. Chapter 2 presents a qualitative and a qualitative investigation of the students' essays. By means of the qualitative investigation three dominating literary approaches arc revealed. The quantitative study charts the three literary approaches' occurrence in a large amount of essay materials (101 essays) obtained from five Swedish grammar schools. The essays, which were written before the turn of the century and a few years into the 20th century, are dominated by an idealistic approach, which sees the author as a prophet of "the truth" and the work of literature as a mirror of the world of Ideas (in Plato's definition).

During the following 3-4 decades, an empirical-historical approach dominates. This approach sees the author and the work of literature as an expression of the historical situation which they lived in and belonged to. The work of literature is seen as a depiction of the real world. The essays which were written during the latter part of the investigated period are dominated by a psychological approach. The work of literature is interpreted in the light of the author's personality and human qualities. Also the nature of literature as a symbolic description of the world, is emphasized.

Chapter 3 begins with a short review of the contents of the ordinances and terms of reference which determined the teaching of literature at Swedish grammar school level from the 1850's until the middle of the 20th century. Thereafter parallels to the essays' literary approaches, which are found in the pedagogical debate and literary research, arc described.

In chapter 4 the investigations described in earlier chapters' are analysed and explained in theoretical terms. The institutional functions of literature teaching, which have been identified by means of this study, namely the selection, legitimizing and reproduction of a literary tradition, are placed in the foreground and focused upon.

    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this thesis is to explore freedom of speech and aspects of credibility related to the Internet. The phenomenon freedom of speech is seen and examined principally from a communicative perspective. Theoretically the thesis is based on three key concepts: Internet, freedom of speech, and credibility. Four studies are included; each of them focuses on the main problem from different angles using different methods.

In the first study, two websites on the Internet, both having reference to the Holocaust, are examined. The aim is to identify some kind of hypertextual dialogue between Living history [Levande historia], representing a serious project about human respect and democracy, and True history [Sann historia], a plagiator expressing a revisionist opinion. The second study examines a media debate about freedom of speech and censorship related to the Internet found in newspaper articles published during 1997-1999, to see which issues these newspapers emphasise, and how the role of the Internet is described. The third study focuses on how university students writing essays assess the credibility of scientific information in web-based environments. In a questionnaire, the students estimate the importance they attach to 24 different elements. The fourth study seeks to increase the understanding of the function and dynamics of Wikipedia as a collaboratively shaped wiki-encyclopaedia. In e-mail interviews, active users are asked about their impressions and experiences.

Based on the studies, some reflections on what could be considered as special with the freedom of speech on the Internet are presented. These reflections, in terms of seven aspects, are referred to as the hypertext structure, the collage effect, boundless identities, shift in responsibility, parallel worlds and hyper reality, the compensating effect, and the leaching effect. A concept, denominated the hypertextual dialogue, has emerged during the work on this thesis. This concept has a technical, an intertextual and a discursive level.

The discussion deals with the news media’s approach towards the Internet, what their possible agenda could be, and the impact they have on people. Internet’s pluralism and its consequences are discussed. Wikipedia could serve as a model by showing how committed individuals interact to create a competitive product. When users interact with and within the hypertextual structure, the construction of meaning, as well as the responsibility for the consequences, would move from the texts’ original authors to the users. Perhaps the Internet requires the involvement of some kind of homo navigare who is able to function within, outside and between digital arenas.

    Abstract [en]

The World Wide Web offers almost unrestricted freedom of speech. Consequently, this large marketplace of ideas1 contains all kinds of information inc\uding plagiarism, falsifications, and incorrect data. Sometimes, web information is considered problematic, or even dangerous, because of its possible infiuence on the readers' thoughts and acts, but, "dangerous" information is not necessarily related to issues like pornography, racial hatred, blasphemy or bomb-making. The presence of misleading, unreliable or indefinable information might be a problem that is even more difficult to survey. Since we are expected to collect an increasing amount of information from the World Wide Web, what information can we use and trust?

This study shows that the freedom of the World Wide Web can provide great opportunities for some actors, but it can also mislead the readers. Living History, a serious information campaign, supported by the Swedish government, was plagiarised by an anonymous web actor, True History, which presented confiicting opinions. This plagiarism gave rise to an interesting kind of interaction between these two actors, whose inequality as regards their positions and resources would certainly be more noticeable in other arenas.

The concept hypertextual dialogue is chosen to describe the above interaction. The first part, hypertextual, refers to the structure on the World Wide Web, but also to the intertextuality that unites texts from different sites and makes them intenelated and part of the same discourse - the term hypertext can be used to apply to both the structure and the content. In this study, the latter aspect is focused. The second part of the concept, the dialogue, refers to a definition used by LinelI (1998:9): "any dyadic or polyadic interaction between individuals who are mutually co-present to each other and who interact through language (or some other symbolic means)". A hypertextual dialogue takes place in an arena, like the World Wide Web, where the actors interact more or less deliberately in several ways.

The aim is to identify some kind of hypertextual dialogue between the two sites on the World Wide Web, and to find out,

    • how the texts become intenelated and part of the same discourse;
    • how the reproduction and recontextualisation of words or text segments cause a change in the meaning of the message;
    • how the actors interact and affect one another;
    • how the actors describe their own and the other's identities.

    Abstract [en]

The media have the power to affect people. This study examines how newspapers write about the Internet in the context of freedom of speech/censorship.

The aim is to see how four Swedish newspapers describe Internet contents, and, further to discuss why these issues and themes are used in the media debate. In a broader sense, it also discusses freedom and freedom of speech related to the Internet.

The methods chosen are content analysis together with an approach inspired by the field of discourse analysis. The data consists of 106 articles, published between 1997-1999, in four Swedish newspapers.

Issues found in the articles are identified and grouped into eight themes: 1. Sexually oriented material, 2. Personal integrity, 3. Racist expressions, 4. Political criticism, 5. Vague expressions, 6. Opposition, 7. Faith and beliefs, and 8. Economy.

These themes have then been analysed and discussed. Based on the findings, questions about the way the media write about the Internet are raised. One explanation could be referred to the established rules of news values; another might be that one medium is reflecting another medium – a quite complicated situation since this new medium seems to be very complex and deviating in many aspects.

Media’s representations might be the cause of fear and anxiety, even moral panic. A frequent motive and reason given for any censoring of the Internet refers to the protection of young people. Restricting freedom of speech on the Internet would be one way to allay people’s anxieties. By implementing such solutions, the media may possibly contribute to balance the situation.

    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on how students assess the credibility of scientific information in web-based environments. What importance do students attach to different cues when assessing credibility? The aim is to investigate whether the framework suggested by Fogg (2002; 2003; Tseng & Fogg 1999a; 1999b), which comprises four types of web credibility (presumed, reputed, surface and earned credibility), can be of use in this specific context to increase the understanding of how essay-writing students assess the credibility of scientific information in web-based environments.

A questionnaire concerning students’ search behaviour and their evaluation of information was answered by 144 students (110 women and 34 men) at a Swedish university. Descriptive statistics were used during the data processing.

The students were asked to rate the credibility of 24 elements. They attached most importance to the following elements: Year of publication, Teachers’ recommendations, Abstract, and Established researcher. These elements represented all four types in Fogg’s framework. The elements that concerned earned credibility – based on first hand experience – were noted as comparatively more important by the respondents.

Wikipedia is a multilingual, Internet-based, free, wiki-encyclopaedia, created by its own users.

The aim of this article is to let the users’ descriptions of their impressions and experiences of Wikipedia increase the understanding for the function and dynamics of this collaboratively shaped wiki-encyclopaedia.

Qualitative, structured interviews via e-mail, concerning users, and the creation and use of Wikipedia, were carried out with six male respondents – administrators at the Swedish Wikipedia – during September and October, 2006.

The results focus on the following themes: I. Passive and active users; II. Formal and informal tasks; III. Common and personal visions; IV. Working together; V. The origins and creation of articles; VI. Contents and quality; VII. Decisions and interventions; and, VIII. Encyclopaedic ambitions.

The discussion deals with the approach of this encyclopaedic phenomenon, focusing upon its “unfinishedness”, the development in different directions, and the social regulation implied and involved. Wikipedia is a product of our time, having a powerful vision and engagement, and it should therefore be interpreted and considered on its own terms.

    Abstract [sv]

Communicative challenges: A comparative study of mother-child interaction1991Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

A fundamental assumption behind the present investigation is that children's appropriation of linguistic and conceptual repertoires are intrinsically linked to the communicative challenges that they meet in their interactions with adults. It is furthermore assumed that these challenges vary between different groups in complex societies. In order to explore such challenges, three groups of mothers with different educational and occupational backgrounds, industrial workers, nurses and teachers, were Video-taped in interactions with their children. The aims of the study were to make in-depth analyses of group differences across different tasks and to conceptually link these differences to broader variation's between the dyads in terms of their backgrounds. In addition, my aim has been to work out a system of categories in order to achieve conceptual clarity in the descriptive language used for categorizing actions. The interactions of 18 dyads, six in each group, in two tasks were analyzed. In the first task, the mothers were to tell their children about twelve pictured animals (phase 1) and then the dyads were to cooperate in dividing the animals into groups (phase 2). In the second task, the dyads were to make a knot in accordance with a model. Group differences were found for a range of variables and there was an overall tendency for the dyads with mother-teachers to differ from the dyads of both of the other groups. On a general level, the interactional pattern of the former group was characterized by demands on the children to externalize their knowledge and understanding, by continuous maternal evaluation of these externalizations, and, in cases of maternal invalidations of the child's contributions, by maternal guidance, of the child towards· the sought-after solution (as opposed to maternal provision of the solution). It was argued that the mothers in the three groups did not differ in their interpretation of the situation as one calling for teaching but, rather, in their interpretation of whatteaching strategies were appropriate an.d, possibly, in their strategical repertoire.

    Abstract [sv]

Temporalitet och social ordning1994Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The primary aim of the thesis is to develop a theoretical frame of reference concerning the significance of temporality for social order, how it is created, maintained and how it can be changed in interaction. The theoretical frame of reference is developed gradually and is considered as heuristic. Emphasis is placed on temporal orientation, i.e. the dimension of meaning, while temporal order is analyzed only as aspects of it appear in the interviews, which constitute the empirical basis for the discussion. The interactionist stance in this thesis implies that the emphasis is placed on the subjects interpretation of the temporal aspects.

The data consists of semistructured interviews with totally 87 employees at two hospital wards in Sweden. The qualitative analyses in the thesis is inspired by 'grounded theory' approach.

The dissertation consists of three parts. Part I consists of an introduction and a discussion of temporality which is then conceptualized in terms of temporal order and temporal orientation. In part II the emphasis is placed on biographical time. The concepts biographical scheme andcareer, which are related to socialization, are chosen for analytical purposes. In part III the theoretical frame of reference is developed through a discussion of temporal aspects in the definition of situation. The biography, an individuals experiences in past, present and expectations of future, is thus put in relation to reference groups and social worlds, which point out for example the significance of social memory for the definition of reality.

The results show the significance of temporal orientation and temporal order for individual and group interpretation of the social reality at their place of work. Biographical schemes, careers and social norms connected to them are important elements in the interpretation of the social order and of the possibilities to change it. Different experiences of educational and occupational socialization implied conflicting definitions of occupational roles and core activities within and between the occupational groups, which were important for changes in the social order. Work routines and social status as a senior in an occupational group were important for reproducing the social order.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to increase the knowledge about the comprehensibility of the easy-to-read civic information. In the study I present my analysis of the content of four easy-to-read texts from four government authorities. The analysis constitutes the starting point for interviews with the target group – people with a minor mental retardation –, but it also reveals some possible difficulties for the intended readers. In the empirical study ten persons from the target group were asked to read a text and the comprehension was tested by oral questions about facts in the text. The empirical findings indicate that the main message was often understood. Still, the target group had some difficulties understanding the texts, although they are easy-to-read and intended for people with a minor mental retardation. The difficulties seem to be caused by the choice of words, abstract explanations and unclear content. Therefore I suggest further research to find out how to prevent such difficulties.

Snow White through Grimm and Disney - A Comparative Study

This essay attempts to discern the differences regarding six Swedish versions of the fairy-tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs over a period of 150 years. Focus is placed on structural transformations through time and media according to the analytical theories of Vladimir Propp. Attention is also given to former research done on the impact of the fairy-tale on the child from a psychological and social point of view. Of interest is the historical background of the tale, commencing with oral tradition, and how this was dealt with by the Grimm brothers. Three of the versions used for this comparative study are variants of the Grimm tale, and three belong to Walt Disney productions, i.e. the film and its picture stories. The aim of the comparison is to clarify how and why this tale is retained to the present.
