    Abstract [en]

The course of the day is an interesting unit of investigation in research on everyday life because in it most rhythms, conflicts and wonderful things are experienced. There is at least one part of the day where an inevitable conflict between the basic human needs of sleep and food and practical personal arrangements on one hand and on the other hand the demand from the modern way of earning ones' living collide - the morning. Morning hours are experienced by many people to be the most hectic hours of the day. There is time for necessary activities between waking up and starting to work, but the "window of opportunities (prism)" open for alternative handling and for something going wrong is limited. What character has the morning activity pattern of people's daily life? In my presentation I will problematise the result, i.e. what activities appear in the mornings of men and women in different ages? I illustrate the morning activity patterns in a population by using a method, VISUAL-TimePAcTS, and look for sequences of activities constituting a collective activity pattern of the population.

    Towards a bright future? Household use of electric light: A microlevel study.2008Inngår i: Energy Policy, ISSN 0301-4215, E-ISSN 1873-6777, Vol. 36, nr 9, s. 3521-3530Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the problem of energy saving in the residential sector and its relation to behavior. However, we know little about the mechanisms explaining consumption and use. The aim is to explore the behavioral elements behind patterns of use, so that consumption can be explained and saving possibilities identified. The study is based on detailed, metered data from an ongoing monitoring study. A larger sample from that study made testing of two hypotheses possible. Yet, many factors remain hidden and must be traced among the habits of households. The major part of the article is devoted to an exploration into what other variables are at work. This was done by studying the electricity consumption of seven households closely. Here, different sources of information from each household were combined: detailed, metered data for each lamp or fixture; data from interviews regarding habits; and observations of natural light and lighting equipment at visits. This information from combined sources was used to detect meanings of use and relationships with consumption. What has been found here must be translated to measurable variables and tested on representative samples of populations. This study offers information on these variables identified and how to interpret them.

New Lighting—New LEDs: Aspects on light-emitting diodes from social and material science perspectives2010Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The papers published in this volume were presented at Sveriges Energiting 2010 (The Swedish Energy Parliament 2010) in Älvsjö south of Stockholm in March 16-17. Sveriges Energiting is Sweden’s largest scene for discussion of energy and climate related activities. It gathered about 2300 participants and had a broad range of energy related issues covered, such as transport, future energy systems, industrial energy, energy and climate, energy efficiency and many more, including several on lighting. One session was initiated and organized by me: “New Lighting—New LEDs”.

I hope this kind of cooperation between lighting researchers will continue in the future. One step in this direction is Nordic Light Emitting Diode Initiative (NORLED), initiated by Professor Mikael Syväjärvi, Linköping University. The aim of the NORLED project is to develop an innovative and industrially feasible white LED technology for general lighting. The project consortium is composed of partners from Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Norway.

Shared or Individual Responsibility: Eco-labelling and Consumer Choice in Sweden2010Inngår i: Environmental Policy and Household Behaviour: Sustainability and Everyday Life / [ed] Patrik Söderholm, London: Earthscan , 2010, s. 173-192Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Our behaviour in our own homes - our recycling habits, consumer choices and transport preferences - all have a huge impact on the environment locally and globally. Governments across the world are trying to formulate and implement policies to encourage and enforce more sustainable household actions. Yet so often these policies fail to have the desired effects because of a lack of understanding of the complex interplay of policy and individual behaviour. This book examines this interplay, looking at the role of values, attitudes and constraints in the links between policy and changing behaviour at the household level. The first part of the book explores the theoretical background looking at the politics of lifestyles and lifestyle change, policy legitimacy and barriers and facilitators for pro-environmental behaviour. The second part is made up of in-depth case studies from Sweden - one of the fore-running countries in this area - examining three main types of household behaviour: waste and recycling; consumption and labelling; and transportation choices. Within these case studies, the contributors examine what policy initiatives have and haven't worked and the role of values and constraints in those processes. This is the first inter-disciplinary, in-depth look at how environmental policy enters the private, domestic sphere. The theoretical insights and policy guidance the book offers will be vital in the drive to generate behaviour change at the household level and the move towards sustainable societies.

Övning ger färdighet?: Lagarbete, riskhantering och känslor i brandmäns yrkesutbildning2014Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish municipalities have traditionally, as suppliers of gas, electricity and district heating to end-use consumers, been one of the key actors of national energy politics. Yet, although Swedish district heating systems typically are owned by the public, neither electricity nor heat production is always under public control. This has historically imposed limitations on municipal plans for own CHP (Combined Heat and Power) plants and district heating systems. Previous research in the field have established that an organisational division between companies active in either heat or electricity supply was one of the most serious challenges for municipal engagement in energy affairs after WW2. Yet, in many cases municipal energy departments have engaged in joint cooperation projects with process industries and power companies, in order to utilize technical expertise and industrial waste heat for the build-up of the local energy system. Processes of initiating, developing and maintaining such cooperation projects - and the erection of municipal CHP plats - are focused upon here.

The purpose of this research project is to describe and analyse the roles played by two municipalities (Helsingborg and Gävle) in the years 1945-1983. The specific research questions were as follows: How were different socio-technical systems for electricity and heat supply introduced and how were different alternatives received within the frames of the municipal organisations? What was the impact of competition between different alternatives on the development of the local energy systems? It shows that strategies for municipal-industrial cooperation are vital for the possibilities of municipal energy companies to come to terms with the organisational gulf between power and heat companies. It is argued that the forming of strategical alliances can illustrate how municipal organisations not always act in autonomous positions. It can rather be the other way round - it is strategies for cooperation and competition that make the municipality a key actor in the local energy system.

    Abstract [sv]

The Atatürk Dam project in south-east Turkey: Changes in objectives and planning over time2002Inngår i: Natural resources forum (Print), ISSN 0165-0203, E-ISSN 1477-8947, Vol. 26, nr 2, s. 101-112Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Atatürk Dam was constructed on the Euphrates River in Turkey in the 1980s as the central component of a large-scale regional development project for the South-eastern Anatolia region, known as GAP. Since the first development plan for the region was presented in 1970, the objectives for regional development have changed significantly.

This article aims to analyze how the functions, design, and capacities of the Atatürk Dam project have been modified since 1970, paralleling changes in the regional development objectives and ambitions, and to identify accomplishments and constraints in the realization of the dam project.

Since 1970, ambitions to develop the region have grown significantly, resulting in major changes to the original project plans. The most important change occurred in 1978, when the design for the Middle Karababa Dam, recommended in 1970, was abandoned and the Atatürk Dam design was adopted. This change considerably increased the storage and power generation capacities of the dam. Yet, the sparse rainfall throughout the catchment in recent years has hampered full utilization of the dam’s storage and generation capacities and increased the need for tradeoffs between conflicting demands for water use.

Aiding science: Swedish research aid policy 1973-20082014Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of research aid is to contribute to development in different ways through the use of research. Sarec (the Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation with Developing Countries) was one of the pioneers within state research aid, and existed between 1975 and 2008. This dissertation studies Sarec’s policy from a historical perspective with the help of official documents and interviews with former directors. Discourse theory together with concepts from Science and Technology Studies comprise the theoretical framework of the study. One of the central questions asked is how the view of the relationship between research and development has changed over time. One of the conclusions is that there are two main policy discourses that are established early on and that can be traced throughout the entire period studied. The two discourses share the starting point that modern science can contribute to development and that national research capacity is an important component in this. The localist discourse represents a more multifaceted view of how research can contribute to development, and what that development consist of. It is more explicitly anti-colonialist and to a greater degree prioritizes the local context as basis for decisions regarding support. The universalist discourse places less emphasis on where knowledge is produced since it can be used anywhere, as long as the right structures and priorities are in place. The discourses reflect different views of knowledge and development. Some decades one discourse dominates over the other, and other decades they are more equal.

Aiding research capacity - strengthening or abandoning the linear model?2010Inngår i: CSA Sociological Abstracts, XVII ISA World Congress of Sociology - Sociology on the Move, Gothenburg, 11-17 July 2010, 2010Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

There is an unequal distribution of resources for higher education and research in  the world, & many low-income countries have difficulties building up research capacity & knowledge systems which can contribute to long-term development & poverty reduction. Many aid organizations offer support with the goal to improve research capacity in low-income countries, & this type of aid has increased since the 1990’s. The paper departs from an assumption that the research gap– as other inequalities– is problematic, & asks what dilemmas can arise in research aid. The paper begins with a literature review, & then narrows in on the case of the Secretariat for Research Cooperation (part of the Swedish International  development Cooperation Agency). I ask questions like: What methods exist inresearch aid? How is the link between research capacity & development portrayed? What methods are deemed successful while others are not? There seems to be general consensus surrounding the idea that aid-actors should support the building of research capacity. Furthermore, many aid actors have explicit ambitions of escaping a colonialist heritage as well as abandoning the linear view of science & technology development, but there is nevertheless debate concerning whether this is being achieved.

    Abstract [en]

There is an unequal distribution of resources for higher education and research in the world, and the number of aid actors that focus on improving the research capacity of low-income countries has increased since the 1990’s. Many aid actors have explicit ambitions of escaping a colonialist heritage as well as abandoning the linear view of science and technology development, but there is debate concerning whether this is being achieved. What methods of aiding research are there, and how is the link between research capacity and development portrayed? This paper is mainly based on previous research and discusses some of the dilemmas that the literature raises. It also illustrates some of these dilemmas by discussing the case of the Secretariat for Research Cooperation (Sarec), which in 1975 was one of the first bilateral aid agencies to engage in research aid.

An investigation into the connections between new ICTs, universities, and poverty reduction.: A comparative study of SIDA-SAREC ICT projects at universities in Tanzania and Nicaragua2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

There has been an increased focus on ICT-related projects in development cooperation in the last decade based on the assumption that ICTs expands opportunities for economic growth as well as for poverty reduction. This is also the case with the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA). I wanted to better understand the reasoning behind the increased focus on ICT. Specifically I have chosen to look at SIDA’s policies and projects with universities in Tanzania and Nicaragua to understand how different stakeholders perceive that increased ICT use at universities can affect poverty reduction. Some questions guiding my research are: In what ways can these ICT investments meet the development goals of SIDA, and might do these ICT investments theoretically fit into a national system of innovation?

Science and technology for development: aiding research2011Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

There is an unequal distribution of resources for research in the world, and a very small amount of the resources for research worldwide are dedicated to the challenges that low-income countries face. Promoting science and technology for development is not a new phenomenon, but the efforts involving aid actors have expanded greatly since the 1990’s, not least since the “knowledge society” and “knowledge-based economy” became hot topics. Many aid actors also have explicit ambitions of escaping a colonialist heritage in foreign aid by for example underlining the importance of local ownership and local priorities in their policies. However, there is debate concerning whether the goals and methods of aid actors are having the intended effects or whether there is risk for scientific neocolonialism and increased dependencies. This area of study concerns the intersection between science policy and development policy. The two areas at times have conflicting goals, and the case of research aid illustrates these. The paper presents my PhD project and includes a discussion about material, method and theory concerning a historical policy study of the research aid actor formerly known as Sarec (which in 1975 was one of the pioneer state agencies to engage in bilateral research aid). I present some preliminary conclusions concerning the main discourses identified in the material.

    Abstract [en]

There is an emerging Development studies and STS dialogue that is addressing various topics and problems of development from diverse theoretical approaches. This paper will provide an overview of recently published scholarship (in the last 10-20years) that is at the intersection of STS and development, in orderto begin to map out the types of work being done, the types of questions being raised and the methods/theory being used toaddress them. We will merge the overview of recent scholarship with the papers presented in the session on Development and STS to highlight the questions, challenges, and opportunities occurring at this intersection. We will develop questions to be discussed at the end of the session in order to generate, motivate and encourage our own thinking about development and STS and implications for our future research in this area.

The integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems in apartment buildings in a new residential area, Hammarby Sjöstad in Stockholm, has been studied using an interdisciplinary approach including e.g. interviews with actors and modelling of PV systems in PVSYST. Four of the ten construction companies represented in the area will install PV systems. The yearly electricity production from these systems has been estimated to be 63 MWh or equal to an electricity demand of 38 (out of 2300) households in the area. Interviews reveal that obstacles for the integration of PV in buildings are e.g. perceived expense and a lack of knowledge. The choice of PV technology is based more on economy, aesthetic appearance, and a wish to demonstrate environmental concern, than on optimal system performance. By integrating renewable energy technologies in the buildings, the construction companies will lay a ground for an ecologically sustainable living, but how these opportunities are utilised by future residents, managers, and caretakers of the buildings will be of decisive importance for the final outcome. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract [sv]

Energy policy on shaky ground?: A study of CCS scenarios2009Inngår i: Energy Procedia, ISSN 1876-6102, Vol. 1, nr 1, s. 4673-4680Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Scenarios play an important role for the societal acceptance of CCS. This paper looks into influential reports containing CCS scenarios and analyses results, key assumptions and drivers for CCS' deployment. Significant uncertainties regarding CCS' development were in several cases excluded or marginalized. Despite these shortcomings, scenarios support a massive deployment of CCS and reflect an undivided optimism. If CCS would fail to meet the high expectations a backlash could follow. Indications were found that new scenarios including uncertainties are needed to balance this over-optimism. So-called unpleasant scenarios are often valuable in helping decision makers develop flexible strategies and policies.

    Abstract [sv]

Bystander passivity in health care and school settings: Moral disengagement, moral distress, and opportunities for moral education2019Inngår i: Journal of Moral Education, ISSN 0305-7240, E-ISSN 1465-3877, Vol. 48, nr 2, s. 199-213Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Bystander passivity has received increased attention in the prevention of interpersonal harm, but it is poorly understood in many settings. In this article we explore bystander passivity in three settings based on existing literature: patient abuse in health care; bullying among schoolchildren; and oppressive treatment of students by teachers. Throughout the article we develop a theoretical approach that connects Obermann's unconcerned and guiltybystanders to theories of moral disengagement and moral distress respectively. Despite differences between the three settings, we show striking similarities between processes of disengagement, indicators of distress, and the constraints for intervention that bystanders identify. In relation to this, we discuss moral educational efforts that aim to strengthen bystanders’ moral agency in health care and school settings. Many efforts emphasize shared problem descriptions and collective responsibilities. As challenging as such efforts may be, there can be much to gain in terms of welfare and justice.

Using forum play to prevent abuse in health care organizations: A qualitative study exploring potentials and limitations for learning2016Inngår i: Education for Health, ISSN 1357-6283, E-ISSN 1469-5804, Vol. 29, nr 3, s. 217-222Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    BACKGROUND:

Abuse in health care organizations is a pressing issue for caregivers. Forum play, a participatory theater model, has been used among health care staff to learn about and work against abuse. This small-scale qualitative study aims to explore how forum play participants experience the potentials and limitations of forum play as an educational model for continued professional learning at a hospital clinic.

    METHODS:

Fifteen of 41 members of staff of a Swedish nephrology clinic, primarily nurses, voluntarily participated in either one or two forum play workshops, where they shared experiences and together practiced working against abuse in everyday health care situations. Interviews were conducted after the workshops with 14 of the participants, where they were asked to reflect on their own and others' participation or nonparticipation, and changes in their individual and collective understanding of abuse in health care.

    RESULTS:

Before the workshops, the informants were either hesitant or very enthusiastic toward the drama-oriented form of learning. Afterward, they all agreed that forum play was a very effective way of individual as well as collective learning about abuse in health care. However, they saw little effect on their work at the clinic, primarily understood as a consequence of the fact that many of their colleagues did not take part in the workshops.

    DISCUSSION:

This study, based on the analysis of forum play efforts at a single hospital clinic, suggests that forum play can be an innovative educational model that creates a space for reflection and learning in health care practices. It might be especially fruitful when a sensitive topic, such as abuse in health care, is the target of change. However, for the effects to reach beyond individual insights and a shared understanding among a small group of participants, strategies to include all members of staff need to be explored.

Re-negotiating agency: patients using comics to reflect upon acting in situations of abuse in health care2019Inngår i: BMC Health Services Research, ISSN 1472-6963, E-ISSN 1472-6963, Vol. 19, nr 1, artikkel-id 58Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

There is a growing body of international research that displays the prevalence and character of abuse in health care. Even though most of these studies are conducted from a patient perspective little is known about how patients conceptualize their agency in relation to such situations. This study aimed to explore how patients reason about their potential to act in abusive situations.

    Methods

Qualitative interviews were conducted with thirteen patients in Sweden. Central in the interviews were three comics, inspired by Boal’s Forum Theatre and part of an earlier online intervention study in which the informants had participated. Each comic showed a situation in which a patient feels abused, and on the opposite side were suggestions for how the patient could act in response. Informants were asked to reflect about situations of abuse and in specific upon the comics. We used the methodology of constructivist grounded theory throughout the study, including the analysis.

    Results

It appeared that the informants constantly re-negotiated their and other patients’ agency in relation to the specifics of the event, patients’ and staff’s responsibilities, and the patients’ needs and values. This process questions views of agency as fixed and self-evident, and can be understood as part of changing discourses about patients’ social role and possibilities to organize their care. Using a feminist theory of power we expected the informants to elicit instances of resistance to domination, which is central to the comics. While doing that, the informants also hinted at parallel stories of empowerment and less visible forms of agency in spite of domination.

    Conclusion

The current analysis showed different ways in which the informants constantly re-negotiated their agency in potentially abusive situations. Not only did the informants engage in reflections about immediate responses to these untoward situations, they also engaged in thoughts about strategies that could protect them and counteract abuse in health care over the long-term. This opens up for future research into ways patients organize their care and identify threats and barriers to the care they need, which could be valuable knowledge for care quality improvement.

Understanding and preventing situations of abuse in health care: Navigation work in a Swedish palliative care setting2019Inngår i: Social Science and Medicine, ISSN 0277-9536, E-ISSN 1873-5347, Vol. 222, s. 52-58Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In their everyday work, health professionals find themselves in situations that they perceive to be abusive to patients. Such situations can trigger feelings of shame and guilt, making efforts to address the problem among colleagues a challenge. This article analyzes how health professionals conceptualize abusive situations, and how they develop collective learning and explore preventive strategies. It is based on an interactive research collaboration with a hospice and palliative care clinic in Sweden during 2016–2017. The empirical material consists of group discussions and participant observations collected during interactive drama workshops for all clinic staff. Based on three types of challenges in the material, identified through thematic analysis, we establish the concept of navigation work to show how health professionals prevent or find ways out of challenging and potentially abusive situations. First, the navigation of care landscapes shows how staff navigate the different territories of the home and the ward, reflecting how spatial settings construct the scope of care and what professionals consider to be potentially abusive situations. Second, the negotiation of collective navigations addresses the professionals' shared efforts to protect patients through the use of physical and relational boundaries, or mediating disrupted relationships. Third, the navigation of tensions in care highlights professionals’ strategies in the confined action space between coercing and neglecting patients who oppose necessary care procedures. Theoretically, the concept of navigation work draws upon work on care in practice, and sheds light on the particular kind of work care professionals do, and reflect on doing, in order to navigate the challenges of potentially abusive situations. By providing a perspective and shared vocabulary, the concept may also elicit ways in which this work can be verbalized, shared, and developed in clinical practice.

Capturing the Stories of Corporations: A comparison of media debates on carbon capture and storage in Norway and Sweden2011Inngår i: Global Environmental Change, ISSN 0959-3780, E-ISSN 1872-9495, Vol. 21, nr 2, s. 336-345Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The development and deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) are sensitive to public debates that socially frame the technology. This study examines the evolving CCS debates, focusing on the media's framing of firms. Corporations are central CCS actors, and we analyze them in light of the nation-state, which has been emphasized in previous research as the primary context of CCS politics. Empirically, we compare framings of Statoil and Vattenfall in the Norwegian and Swedish media, drawing on a qualitative dataset of news media articles published between 2005 and 2009. We conclude that firms make regular media statements either to foster legitimacy or to respond to criticism of CCS. We also conclude that framing is not necessarily linked to technological success or failure and that interpretations of the technology have different forms depending on whether the related activity occurs in domestic or foreign markets. Finally, we explain the media framings based on the domestic energy situation and politics.

    Abstract [en]

Building energy simulation (BES) models rely on a variety of different input data, and the more accurate the input data are, the more accurate the model will be in predicting energy use. The objective of this paper is to show a method for obtaining higher accuracy in building energy simulations of existing buildings by combining time diaries with data from logged measurements, and also to show that more variety is needed in template values of user input data in different kinds of buildings. The case studied in this article is a retirement home in Linköping, Sweden. Results from time diaries and interviews were combined with logged measurements of electricity, temperature, and CO2 levels to create detailed occupant behavior schedules for use in BES models. Two BES models were compared, one with highly detailed schedules of occupancy, electricity use, and airing, and one using standardized input data of occupant behavior. The largest differences between the models could be seen in energy losses due to airing and in household electricity use, where the one with standardized user input data had a higher amount of electricity use and less losses due to airing of 39% and 99%, respectively. Time diaries and interviews, together with logged measurements, can be great tools to detect behavior that affects energy use in buildings. They can also be used to create detailed schedules and behavioral models, and to help develop standardized user input data for more types of buildings. This will help improve the accuracy of BES models so the energy efficiency gap can be reduced.

    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the controversy over urban sprawl in the United States. Because there is abundant descriptive literature about urban sprawl as well as numerous prescriptive “strategies” and “toolkits” to “tame” and “fight” sprawl, this paper instead examines urban sprawl as a social construction and specifically focuses on its non-problematization, the phenomenon of social groups which do not or refuse to acknowledge sprawl as a legitimate problem.

    Abstract [en]

This paper explores an episode of numbers appearing on a screen and being read/spoken, looked at and received as numbers, by people who work together to achieve a particular goal. The events happened in Singapore, in 2012-2013, as part of periodic reporting on diabetic retinopathy screening in the context of efforts to innovate such screening. I tell of two parties at odds over how to engage numbers accountably. This question of ‘engagement’, of what can and should be done with numbers to secure their participation in organizational affairs, is worked out in how numerical forms are performed and sustained as working numbers. Using three STS analytics to analyse the episode – Helen Verran’s(2001) work on number as a relation of unity/plurality, John Law’s (1994) work on modes of ordering, and Steve Woolgar and Daniel Neyland’s (2013) work on mundaneity and accountability – I argue that numbers are brought to life in very different ways, each mobilizing a certain recognition of what numbers are and what it takes to respect this. In the conclusion, I comment on the article’s use and juxtaposition of these STS analytics, using the metaphor of a kaleidoscope.

The notion that Singapore’s multi-ethnic population provides a unique and quintessentially ‘Asian’ assetfor its biomedical sciences initiative has been part of the discourse in local and international mediacoverage of that sector. It has also been highlighted by scholars as a feature of Singapore’s politicaleconomy. This article discusses how ‘racial/ethnic difference’ was initially central but then becameperipheral to one high-profile research programme: the Singapore Epidemiology of Eye Disease (SEED)Study Programme. The case study is offered as an example of the flexible deployment and situationalenactment of racial/ethnic difference in biomedical science, by demonstrating how it gets entangledwith and disentangled from the creation of scientific capital and legitimacy, as well as complicates thenotion of ‘Asian’ science.

    Abstract [en]

The fact that actions such as driving, shopping and travellingcontribute to climate change is something that individuals mayregard in various ways. Research indicates that the concern andwillingness of individuals to change their everyday life in order toreduce their impact on the climate might be gendered. Men inSweden appear to be less worried and in addition travel in a lessenvironmentally-friendly way than women. This article investigateslinkages between masculinities, femininities and individuals’ viewson climate change by analyzing focus group conversations withmen. The ways that these men made use of, reproduced or challenged discoursesof masculinities, when positioning themselves in relation toclimate change and sustainable travel, were scrutinized. Threediverse discursive practices were found, each one enabling variousways of positioning regarding the individual’s responsibility fortravelling sustainably. A discourse about men’s affection for carswas used as well as challenged by the men talking about sustainabletravelling. Some men used the discourse in order to justifyunsustainable travelling. Other men used it to position themselvesas different kinds of men. Furthermore, ecofeminist discoursesabout women as having a “closer” relation to the environment ornature as feminine were not recreated during the conversations. Thearticle contributes to a deeper understanding of men’s reasoning onclimate change and sustainable travel. It thus challenges narrowassumptions of men as environmental rouges and masculinity asproblematic in relation to environmental issues.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article highlights how environmental issues influence transport planning, andhow they make transport planners rethink previous categorizations of user groups. The introduction of an environmental discourse leads to a questioning of men’stravel activities, i.e. car driving. However, the critique against men’s travelling doesnot address all men. Instead, two types of masculinities are constructed in the localplanning discourse: the first one is a ‘problematic’ obsolete old driver. The secondone is a young ‘quality conscious’ man who opts for new technological solutions. The relationship between these two constructions of masculinities is hierarchical. The transport planners interpret it as their responsibility to make sure that publictransport is regarded as attractive to younger men and their imagined ‘needs’. Theelderly men however, are made scapegoats and are blamed for their unsustainabletravelling. These rather stereotypical constructions of men also include a negativeperception of elderly men. The analysis is based on discussions in eight focusgroups, accomplished in 2009 with 36 transport planners and politicians (24 menand 12 women) working with the planning of the future public transport system in Malmö city in the south of Sweden.
