Förhållandet mellan vinstöverföringsreglerna och omstruktureringssreglerna2000Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Successful start-ups & key success factors2000Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Almost everyday we can read about or listen to the radio the creation of a new company, which is of course successfull and just started several months ago. One succeed but for how many other failures. In our everyday life we only know the companies which exist. We never consider all the high number of companies that have failed. In addition to that, by analyzing some cases, we can notice that some"good"companies, with good team, good concept can failed too. In order to understand the views that exist, one needs to elucidate this problem. The early stage of a new-created company is the most important phase of the firm´s life, according to the fact that it will determine the evolution of its whole structure, and therefore will deeply affect its future. All the more so a firm in order to be successful must be able to growth in the long run. With this thesis, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of the key- success factors ofyoung companies. Therefore we will try to clarify issues concerning this early stage. In particular we will highlight and describe that the early development in a firm is a very important phase in its life. And to determine which factors must be take in consideration in order to avoid future difficulties.

Kapacitetsberäkningsmodell för materialhanteringsflödet på Ericsson i Kumla2006Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ericsson’s factory in Kumla, Modules Kumla, became a hub for radio modules and micro base stations, which enables mobile communication through radio base stations, in 2004. Because of this the factory focuses more on the logistics operations. This has led to a need to be able to plan the capacity for the materials handling system. This master thesis has therefore been performed at Modules Kumla to develop a capacity calculation model for the material handling flow during the autumn of 2005.

The work has contained a mapping of the material handling flow regarding to which activities was performed and how much time they consumed. By using data from the enterprise information system and simple linear regression a capacity calculation model was developed to calculate the amount of staff needed given a specific production and delivery rate.

Mjukvaruföretagens strategiska agerande2000Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: In recent research literature, some researchers mean that companies in fast changing markets have to act proactively while others find that companies have to adapt to conditions and to react. This makes it interesting to study how software companies act strategically and also to study to what extent a flexible organisation is required by companies who proact and by those who react.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is the study how different types of software companies act strategically and what this requires of the company in terms of flexibility.

Delimitation: The study treats only Swedish software companies with more than ten employees. Proceed of the Study: Representatives from four case companies as well as a consultant have been interviewed. As a complement to the case study, a survey has also been conducted where 36 companies have participated.

Results: Only one of the four case companies can be said to act proactively. Among the survey companies, there are principally young companies, companies with a leading position on the market and companies that experience high growth that act proactively. Companies that work proactively value to a greater extent than reactive companies a flexibility that is created by visions.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Today many companies are competing to get space in our minds. Companies spend a tremendous amount of money on building strong brands. It is not just about making us aware of their logo, today it’s more about giving the brand a ”soul” and to load it with different values. Due to today’s globalization there is also interesting to look at it from a cultural perspective. To export a brand name into a new market abroad is not the same as just transferring your knowledge and believe it should work in another country and culture. A brand is consciously and unconsciously loaded with values, especially cultural values. In Sweden there are values typically Swedish that might not be obvious to you but still follow us. These values might not fit the new market the company is entering, therefore some values might get left behind, while others are easily transferred to another country. We therefore find it very interesting to study these cultural values.

Purpose: The purpose with this essay is to describe which cultural values Swedish company’s brands intend to communicate abroad.

Performance: We have done a qualitative study. Our empirical study is based mainly on personal interviews. The frames of references are based on well established theories within the brand- and cultural field.

Result: Our study showed that Swedish companies load their brands with the four values; quality, reliability, simplicity and modern&innovative. We also found that the Swedish culture is reflected in these values, in both national-, business- and corporate culture.

Så blir din motpart din medpart: en studie i hur relationer skapar identitet2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Marknadsföring av receptbelagda läkemedel2000Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Data samlades in genom personliga intervjuer.

The internationalization process in small and mediumsize companies: a descriptive and comparative study2001Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: As a consequence of the increasing globalization, more trade co-operation etc., swedish companies get to an ever increasing extent internationalized. Whereas some time ago it was mainly the big, established companies going abroad, today just as many small and medium sized swedish companies sell and produce goods abroad. During the past few years, there has been a tendency for research in the field of international business to focus manly on high-technology, so called knowledge-intensive companies. However, an important proportion of international companies in Sweden are part of the traditional manufacturing business. Research in the field concerning differences between different companies from different businesses is limited. Are there any differences in the way companies internationalize between the two categories? What are the differences?

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate if there are any differencies in the way swedish small and mediumsize companies internationalize, how these differencies look like, and the factors that influence the companies choice of entry modes. Problem In what way do swedish companies internationalize? Which entry modes do they choose? What factors affects the choice of entry modes? Are there any differencies in the answers of the questions above between traditional manufacturing companies and high-technology companies.

Practical procedure: The paper is based upon an approach similar to a casestudy, using interviews with the CEO or head of the export departement as datacollection-method. The method of selection we used is based upon our own criteria regarding number of employees, turnover and other firm-specific data. We then selected four swedish international companies located in Linköping and Mjölby, of which two were high-technology companies and two were traditional manufacturing companies.

Result: The study shows that companies in their early stages of the internationalization process drop a step-by-step approach to geographical and cultural close markets in order to internationalize. The two high-technology companies had a higher speed in their internationalization process compared with the two traditional manufacturing companies. Market potential was the main explanatory factor for all companies regarding choice of entry mode. Compared with the traditional manufacturing companies, the two high-technology companies were more organized in their international business affairs, anlayzing to a greater extent different alternative approaches. These companies also to a greater extend give priority to the participation in different internatioanl networks, marketpresence and the development of specific competencies. The two high-technology companies used more resource-demanding entry modes, whereas the two traditional manufacturing companies still to a greater extend rely on easy and cheap entry modes.

Towards market driven manufacturing systems design2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Few companies can compete on price/cost alone. With increasing customer expectations alternative ways of adding value is desirable. One way to diverge from competitors is to select a market or market segment in which to compete. Criteria for focusing on a specific market segment are the attractiveness of certain markets, and companies' ability to meet the demand of different market segments. Strategy can be seen as problem solving within a competitive environment. The use of strategy is a way of seeking to increase market share. Designing a manufacturing system supporting a certain strategy contributes to a  company's competitiveness. The objective of this dissertation is to develop an approach for linking manufacturing system design to customer demand, through manufacturing strategy.

Axiomatic design is in this thesis chosen as a tool to structure the linkages between strategy and manufacturing system design. The starting point is to analyze an existing framework that is based on the principles of axiomatic design. This framework, the Production System Design and Deployment framework, is analyzed from both a design perspective and a manufacturing strategy perspective. As a second step, a design perspective is applied to manufacturing strategy. The possibility to apply a design perspective to strategy creation/planning is analyzed. Further, axiomatic design is used to link manufacturing strategy to the manufacturing system design.

An axiomatic design approach to the design of manufacturing strategy is presented. The approach consists of three domains. The first domain represents the market demands. The second domain represents the manufacturing strategies designed to meet the market demands in the first domain. In the third domain variables of the manufacturing system design is represented.

When designing a manufacturing strategy based on axiomatic design, the manufacturing strategy becomes linked to customer demands. Further, the presented approach link manufacturing system design to the designed manufacturing strategies, thereby supporting linkages between system design and market demands.

The use of axiomatic design in the approach has several advantages. It highlights the relationships and linkages between different goals, strategies and process variables. Another advantage is the way in which the design principles guide the designer in achieving an acceptable solution.

Redovisning av optionsprogram2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Resultat: I dagsläget pågår inget strukturerat kvalitetsutvecklingsarbete inom enheterna.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Many authors have criticised traditional methods of management control which has triggered the development of modern management control methods. We believe that an interesting aspect of traditional companies from the manufacturing sector is that traditional management control models spring from demands from these types of companies. We want to find out whether modern management control is fit-to-purpose solution for traditional manufacturing companies.

Purpose and methods: The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyse the use of traditional and more modern operations management control methods, in traditional manufacturing companies. Empirical work is based on six qualitative interviews with representants from the three companies Cloetta Fazer, Milko and Skånemejerier.

Results: Traditional manufacturing companies do not face the same conditions compared with yesterday, and must in many areas change their management control.

Preparation for Commercialisation of Industrial Innovations: An integrated technological and commercial evaluation of a water purification innovation in Singapore2003Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The intention with this thesis is to examine the preparation for commercialisation of industrial innovations. Both in the industry and in the academic perspective there is a common need for support of the commercialisation process of innovations, especially concerning the preparation phase. A preparation model for commercialisation has consequently been designed. The propeller of commercialisation incorporates a perspective of parallel preparation concerning the three critical aspects technology characteristics, environment scanning and preparation of the venture. Generally the model can thus contribute with a structured way of evaluation and preparation and reduce the risks by limiting the budget needed in the early phase of commercialisation through the use of subsequent steps incorporating all three critical perspectives. To demonstrate the model and to provide a basis for evaluation, the Propeller of Commercialisation was applied on the specific commercialisation preparation of the SMB technology at Johnson Pacific Pte Ltd in Singapore.

Risk Management in the bidding context A Schedule Risk Analysis Approach2003Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Risk Management has emerged during the last decades and is now considered an indispensable component in management of projects. However, no attention has been directed towards Risk management in the bidding context. Uncertainties, but also the opportunities to affect project success, are extremely high during this phase. The purpose of this thesis has been to design a schedule risk analysis method with supporting methodology based on current research and to verify its usefulness in a business environment. We have conducted a case study at the Business Unit Gripen (BUG) subdivision of SAAB Aerospace. BUG produces large and complex offers of defense systems including the Gripen aircraft. Through interviews and participative observation we have gained an understanding of the bidding context and the requirements of risk management in this phase. The case has been used to verify the usefulness of the developed framework. The results of this thesis are a new framework for schedule risk analysis during the pre-project phases and an Excel-based model for estimation and quantification of schedule risks in project networks. The method and methodology developed seems to be able to produce schedules with better precision and quite easy to integrate in the offer process. We believe that the model is applicable to many other contexts, including ongoing projects in diverse industries where it is vital to assess uncertainties in project schedules.

The decision of the European Commission to block the merger between Volvo and Scania in the late 90’s became the starting point to the debate of the possible discriminating effects of the European merger regulation. Especially since the Commission a few years earlier had approved of the merger between Mercedes-Benz and Kässbohrer on the German bus market, where the conditions for competition had been similar to those at hand in the Swedish case. The issue that was and still is in focus is whether the European merger regulation is more difficult to pass for large companies situated on a smaller domestic market than is the case for their competitors of corresponding size but situated on a larger domestic market.

This thesis aims at examining what the judgement of the geographical relevant market means for the application of the Merger act. This is being done from two perspectives. Firstly how the geographical criterion affects large merging companies situated on a relatively small domestic market and secondly how it affects a member state like Sweden, which is so dependent on its large companies. The purpose of this thesis also opens for a discussion of how rigid the merger control can be in an open market economy.

The company perspective of the purpose is being pursued in two studies of the merger cases Volvo-Scania and Mercedes-Benz/Kässbohrer, being four national champs with differing size of domestic markets. The member state angle considers the smaller state dependence on its large companies and if that dependence itself creates a disadvantage in a merger case. The end of the purpose opens for a common discussion of the legitimacy of merger control in an open market economy. After analysing these aspects the thesis concludes that the geographical criterion makes it impossible for large companies with a relatively small domestic market to merge when a market bears the stamp of brand loyalty. Considering the small member state the conclusion is that the European merger control offers both pros and cons for consumers and that smaller states would be better off with a more producer-oriented merger law. The ending conclusion questions the Merger act as an intervening tool because of its arbitrary aspect depending on which composition the Commission has when a merger is announced.

Internationalisation in a network based world2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The organisational forms of companies have undergone a transformation from a hierarchal structure towards a network based form. The network form has proven to be the best structure for the current competitive environment. With technological advancements in almost every area it has become almost impossible to produce everything “in-house” and still stay competitive. This has caused an increase in the degree of outsourcing parts of the value chain to suppliers. Therefore, the competition has now moved from between companies to between entire value chains. For a manufacturing company, with a large part of the value chain outsourced to suppliers the task of setting up production in a new market brings forth new questions such as: is it possible to move an entire value chain to a new country? The purpose of this thesis is to explore what factors influence the construction of a strategic network of suppliers of a manufacturing company when entering a new market. The purpose was divided into two research questions: How is the internationalisation process performed in a strategic network situation and what factors influence the construction of a supplier structure in a world based on networks? Three multinational companies with a large part of their value chain outsourced to suppliers were chosen for interviews: Ericsson, Scania and Volvo Truck Corporation.

The internationalisation process of a manufacturing company is conducted as follows: the first step is the decision to enter a new market followed by a rather quick set up of a production plant. In this initial phase of the establishment, everything or almost everything is imported which is possible due to a global network of suppliers. The last step depends on the strategic objective with the establishment, either importing will continue or a complete organisation will be established in the country. A complete organisation is in this aspect when the company makes large investments inthe market and starts constructing a supplier network, surrounding sales and marketing functions. Factors influencing the internationalising process are: degree of networking, the type and structure of the network surrounding the company; level of knowledge, the accumulated experience of operating in foreign markets; type of market, the characteristics of the market and degree of commitment i.e. will an entire organisation be built up or will importing suffice.

    Abstract [en]

In the digital world a electronic signature can be compared with a signature written with a pencil on a paper. The problem is that many rules of law say that a signature should be handmade. Can an electronic signatures be seen as handmade? This is being disputed in doctrine, some think that legal changes must take place. Others see no reason why electronic signatures cannotbe used today, having a teleologic point of view. Can the purpose to use a handmade signature be fulfilled with an electronic signature?

    Abstract [en]

The regulations concerning traffic insurance and indemnity for property damage in consequence of traffic can be found in the traffic damage law. In general traffic insurance is compulsory, i.e. every vehicle used in traffic has to be insured. Different rules concerning indemnity are applicable to personal injuries and property damage. The protection offered by the insurance in case of property damage doesn’t stretch as far as it does in case of personal injuries. Damage on a vehicle or on goods transported with the vehicle is as a rule not compensated by the insurance of the vehicle. If that kind of property gets damaged in a collision is it on the other hand possible to receive compensation from the insurance of the other vehicle, provided that carelessness or defectiveness on that side has caused the damage. Also other property damage that the vehicle causes in traffic, for instance when a car hits a building or a bicycle, is compensated by the traffic insurance belonging to the vehicle. Indemnity in consequence of traffic is not regarded as damages, but since the indemnity is determined from the same principles as damages, there is an obvious connection. On account of this strong connection the conceptions and interpretations in tort law are of great importance. Here is an interpretation of what is to be regarded as property damage raised together with the right for a third part to receive indemnity. The question is whether the conception of how to interpret property damage and when a third part is entitled to indemnity has been altered by two new settlements from the Supreme Court in October 2004. This thesis aims foremost at illuminating which consequences these two new cases can have on how to interpret property damage and when a third part is entitled to indemnity after a traffic accident. Before these two legal cases are discussed in detail I’m going to describe when indemnity for property damage, other than damage on vehicle, can be issued in consequence of traffic.

Essays on the economics of agricultural income risk2005Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is inspired by the current debate concerning the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union. European agricultural policy has been subject to a number of reforms and there is an ongoing debate both at the political and academic arena over what measures that are needed. The essays presented here are intended to shed some light on one of the possible future avenues for European agricultural policy that is currently discussed, i.e. some sort of insurance-based scheme.

Based on the two following essays:

    1. Insurance as agricultural policy - the case of the european union. Anders Bäckstrand.
    2. Stochastic crop yields in an agricultural sector model. Anders Bäckstrand and Wolfgang Britz.

    Abstract [sv]

Managing Attention Budgets in a Project-Based Organisation: A Project Communication Framework2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The knowledge-based theory proposes that knowledge and how it is managed is an important factor for determining the competitiveness of corporations. Project-based organisations are often put forward as a fast and flexible way of managing knowledge. The prioritizing between different tasks and projects in such organisations is to a large extent done by the individuals. In addition, electronic communication technology enables large amounts of information to travel far and fast. The bounded rationality of the human brain, the flood of information and the multitude of tasks pose a big challenge for project-based organisations. Communication is crucial for efficient project work and given this background it is interesting to examine how individuals in project-based organisations use different communication channels.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore individual communication behaviour in a project-based organisation and from these understandings create a practical framework for discussing and actively managing project communication.

Research method: The gathering of empirical data was done through a case study of the Converting Standard Line Project – TBA at Tetra Pak Carton Ambient in Lund. The case study consisted of observations and 20 qualitative interviews conducted with the project members, the project manager and representatives from senior management.

Results: The choice of communication channel was governed by the relative relation between individual gain and individual attention cost and high social presence media such as face-to-face interaction were more preferred than suggested by existing theories. Moreover e-mail had characteristics that made it more than a communication channel and therefore more popular than suggested by existing theories. Finally the study proposes a project communication framework that can be used as a platform for active management of project communication and thereby enabling a more efficient use of the limited attention budget of each individual.

Beslutsfattande och information: rapportanvändning i små företag2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Reforming the European Commission: A historical institutionalist approach: Why has the reform of the Commission been difficult?2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The reform of the European Commission has been on the EU agenda for more than three decades. The attempts to introduce an overhaul of the Commission’s institutional structure has been motivated predominantly by the fact that the efficiency of the functioning of the European Commission has been in decline. Despite the striking need to restore the Commission's efficiency, which has become even more urgent in the last decade, the attempts to improve its modus operandi have been marked by many obstacles, difficulties and delays.

This thesis aims to analyze and explain why the process of reforming the European Commission has been so problematic. In order to achieve this goal, the theoretical framework of historical institutionalism has been utilized. More precisely, we mainly build on the work of Paul Pierson, whose concepts help us understand the reasons behind the failure of a number of reform plans regarding the Commission and clarify why the institutional structure of the European Commission is characterized by a high degree of stability.

Background: After 15 years of negotiations and diplomatic struggle, China was finally given the formal approval to join the World Trade Organization as the 143rd member. China has been driving for years to join the WTO since that is a crucial part of its plan to reform its economy and to build the economic modernization.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to gain a general knowledge of China’s economic development, analysis advantages and disadvantages associated with China’s WTO membership as well as to answer the questions addressed.

Methodology: This thesis is based on qualitative method, and the information is gathered through the secondary data. Plenty of statistical data is involved in this research, especially economical information, such as market share, rate of economic growth and percentage of foreign investment.

Key findings: China's entry into the World Trade Organization is a historic step in the country's process of reform, and it marks a new phase in China's opening up to the outside world. It will encourage China to move in the direction of meeting the demands of the Chinese people for openness, modernization, and healthy development of the national economy. Moreover, it will also contribute to other countries’ economic social, scientific, intellectual, and political life.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Today small business firms represent a considerable part of swedish economy, and the number of small firms has steadily increased the last ten years in relation to the total employment. The fact that there are firms willing to grow, it ought to be interesting observing their motives of growth, and what kind of strategies that can be identifiable in these firms.

Purpose: To examine the motives of growth in small business firms, and to study which growth strategies the firms use when expanding their business.

Realization: The study is accomplished through telephone interviews with six small business firms in the province of Jönköping. The firms contain between 10-49 employees.

Result: The motives of growth in small business firms are in great extension derived from self-realization. Considering the growth strategies, the firms claim that the influence of executives is what affects the most concerning growth. As well market- and product development are of great importance, even though these strategies are ofteninseparables.

Category Extensions: Factors enhancing brand equity2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 10 points / 15 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today’s world, where the consumer is constantly exposed to more and more brands in almost any kind of environment, the importance of exploiting those brands which have managed to reach the consumer’s mind and gained a strong position has increased. A majority of new product launches are extensions of existing brands. Brand extensions can be seen as a less expensive as well as less risky way to satisfy the consumer’s demands and needs within several segments by providing several products under the same brand rather than creating a new name for every new product. Even though the extension of brands has become a popular strategy, it can still be somewhat of a troublesome affaire to extend the brand without loosing its original value. A “very good” brand extension not only creates additional cash-flow but also enhances the brand name. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to identify factors that enable enhanced brand equity through category brand extension. A category extensions is when an existing brand name is applied to a product category that is new to the firm.

The study is conducted based on exclusively written data whereas a presentation of textual analysis will appear. As the focus is on theoretical findings and not empirical, no entire chapter in this thesis will concern empirical findings. Elementary variables of brands are defined, explained and discussed as well as the concept of brand equity, identity and image. Further, we present a discussion concerning definitions and the research that has been conducted on the subject of extensions. A discussion on the potential benefits and difficulties that are involved in brand extension follows and the concept of extension fit as well as aspects of lifestyle are presented. The conclusions reach are seven factors, all benefiting from having a high level of abstraction. The factors enhancing brand equity through category extensions are: Brand Context Distance, Lifestyle, Brand Awareness, Fit, Guarantee Function, Personality and Relationship.

    Abstract [sv]

Balanced Scorecardmått: organisationsspecifika eller likriktade?2001Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: The project controller is a function witch evolved due to the strong gaining ground of project operation. Why the area of the project controller is interesting to study is explained by the fact that increasing knowledge of this function is important in order to make project operation work well. The fact that opinions in this field disagree, further increases the interest of the field. In order to study the function of the project controller three companies have been singled out. They are IFS, Intentia and Saab Bofors Dynamics. The selection is based upon them being knowledge based companies with project intense operation.

Aim: The aim with this study is to compare and analyse the function of the project controller in three project intense knowledge based companies.

Method: This study is based upon three methodological bases being qualitative study, case study and interview. As a complement to the interviews, document analysis have been used.

Result: The field of responsibility of accounting controllers is still of great importance, but can be seen as a smaller part of the collected project controller functions. A new area for the function of the project controller stresses constitutes of interaction, which both directly and indirectly supports project control. In the interactive function, both offensive and defensive functions are included, which can be conceived paradoxically. Furthermore the function of the project controller is rather influenced by how companies organise and structure the management control than the importance of the project operation.

Flexibel Fysisk Distribution2001Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Management control in Shared Service Centers: How to influence people in the striving towards organizational goals2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: A constant market pressure on companies to increase their competitiveness has compelled managers to explore business models outside of the traditional ones. The Shared Service Center (SSC) forms part of these untried models, and can be seen as a hybrid. When it comes to its management control, the research is scarce, and hence, there are no obvious paths to follow when it comes to the designing and use of management control systems in such organizations.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to describe the design of the management control system in a SSC, and further to analyze the underlying reasons for its outlining.

Demarcation: The study is limited to the investigation of the SSCs of Electrolux, SKF and Volvo. Moreover, the problem is highlighted from the perspective of the SSC management.

Realization: In the form of a case study, the thesis was realized through the undertaking of four interviews with individuals in the SSCs’ respective management or its close surrounding.

Results: Sprung out of the process orientation, SSCs in their management control primarily focus on customers, process improvement and people. In their striving to obtain cost reduction and service quality, several control tools are used, the choice of which depends on variables such as organizational structure, external environment, technology and strategy.

Evaluation of Third-Party Logistics in a Japanese Setting: an evaluation of the 3PL-partnership between the Japanese trading house Gadelius and the European logistics2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis the Third-Party Logistics (3PL) partnership between the Japanese trading company Gadelius and the European logistics provider Mahé is investigated. This was done as a case study, mainly taking place on location at Gadelius’ headquarter in Tokyo.

The purpose has been to identify and evaluate the fulfilment of initial objectives, both with respect to agreed on terms and expectations of each party, analyze the reasons behind result and provide recommendations for the future.

In terms of what is strictly defined and agreed on in the contract the partnership is principally fulfilled, but this setup is not good in terms of how full 3PL-effects could be achieved.

The not so strictly defined parts of the contract stating that Mahé should work proactively are however not fulfilled to the same degree. This is connected to the lack of a dedicated Mahé representative being integrated into the OtD-team at Gadelius.

Because of this Gadelius’, to begin with very high, expectations on effects have become unrealistic, which has contributed to bad sentiments against Mahé and their capabilities. This has further been enhanced by Key Performance Indicators that don’t fully match the essential objectives with the partnership.

To change the situation two possible ways for the future are presented. If Gadelius’ focus is on indirect cost reductions an expanded partnership should be chosen, while a focus on direct cost reductions and a need for an easier change implementation call for a more limited partnership. For both alternatives new ways for measuring performance are suggested.

Logistiskt förändringsarbete: olika ansatser för operativ utveckling2000Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

During the last decade organizations have been under an increasing pressure to master change, where some key words are increased variability, competition, insecurity and complexity. The new competitive situation sets new and increasing demands on logistical development work and those who conduct it.

An analysis of the logistic research from a perspective of change indicates that the research has primarily met the new !ogistical challenges with systematic knowledge development regarding the change content. The research answers questions of what and why, but the contributions about how changes are implemented have traditionally been very weak. Because of this, there is a need for research focusing on the mere process of change and that develops knowledge about how we can effectively conduct change. The overall purpose is to develop knowledge about how work for !ogistical change can be rendered more efficient.

In the theoretical frame of reference it becomes clear that the logistical research is primarily founded in the linear model of change. Through the borrowing of theories from the two research areas Strategic Change and Learning Organization, two additional models of change can be identified. The first model regards changes as social processes and is hence called "the process model". The second model views change as circular and is therefore called "the circular model".

The analysis shows that the linear model best reproduces the mechanisms in less extensive changes, where such changes occur within the frame of existing mental models. When the extension of changes increases, the process mode! captures the mechanisms of the processes better, especially the political aspects concerned. The circular model best depicts the processes in the most extensive changes, where new mental models are developed and converted to the operational level.

The research results indicate that the outcome of change depends on the correlation between a change's context, content and process over time. Consequently there is no best approach to operational development; rather every kind of change has to be dealt with differently. In the dissertation three approaches of change are typified, each grounded in one of the three models of change. The first approach is termed "solution driven" and is based on the linear model. The second approach, named "programmed process", is grounded in the model of process and the third, called "learning approach", views changes as circular learning processes. Rendering more effective logistical change implies that it needs to be based on the model or models of change that can best live up to the demands and mechanisms of change.

Den europeiska arresteringsordern: ett rättssäkert förfarande?2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The European union started as an area of economic cooperation, but has developed into an area of cooperation in many legal fields. There are these days even cooperation when it comes to dealing with criminals. There is a new procedure called the European arrest warrant which goal is to make the extradition of criminals between the different member states in the European union more efficient. Sometimes when a state receives a European arrest warrant they have to extradite the person in question without doing any investigation of their own. The procedure is based on the principle of mutual recognition. This principle means that the member states should recognise the legal decisions of the other member states, as they were their own. The aim of the thesis is to see if this procedure is acceptable concerning the legal security. Will the procedure with the European arrest warrant effect the legal security for the suspects, or the rest of the citizens?

Kritisk granskning av RR 172003Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Research results show that the potential of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has increased. That means there is a growing pressure on Swedish companies to act with responsibility: general public has a positive attitude towards companies that communicate their CSR. Advertising agencies have been criticized by their way to manage the question of social responsibility. One of the characteristics of an advertising agency is their anonymity; even though their products are extremely visible, it is rarely clear who gave rise to an advertising production. If this is put in relation to CSR in general, we find ourselves in a contradictory situation when CSR in many cases is about exposure of the responsible corporation.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explain whether CSR can be applied to advertising agencies, by describing in which way their conditions limit respectively make possible to run business in terms of CSR.

Research Method: The thesis has a qualitative approach, and the empirical data is in large parts based on personal interviews, where the interviewees represent Swedish advertising agencies.

Result: We have identified a number of limitations and possibilities related to advertising agencies concerning CSR. Principally limits are that the advertising industry by tradition does not sanction responsibility in this matter, that professionals belittle the social effect by their own business but recognize the impact of advertising productions taken all together. Finally, efficient advertising and customer satisfaction are top priority concerns: ethics may have to step aside due to these matters. On the other hand, there are several aspects to suggest that CSR is to be applied on agencies: the surrounding world is an important matter to agency activities. Our results show that the attention given an agency in factual can be used in characteristics of CSR: the professionals have the opportunity to choose how and what to produce.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis is to illustrate how payments of damages between companies are treated from a taxation point of view, and to analyse, in a tax law perspective, the consequences that follow the transactions. Furthermore, a comparison is made between damages and transactions similar to damages, such as amicable settlements and fines between companies, to ascertain whether they are treated similar. Finally, there is an analysis of the consequences of taxation of insurances, both premiums and compensations, followed by a comparison with the consequences of taxation of damages.

    Abstract [en]

Background: During the late 20th century an interest for environmental accounting arose among the Swedish companies. Today there only exist legislated demands for companies that run businesses that require a permit, or require a report, according to the Swedish environmental Act. There is no other legislation or regulation in the field of environmental accounting. How do the listed companies in Sweden design their environmental accounting? Do they follow the law? To what extent do they use the guidelines and standards available when they put their environmental information together?

Aim: The aim of this thesis is to investigate how Swedish companies declares environmental information in their annual reports, and if any, in their environmental or sustainability reports.

Completion: A quantitative survey of annual reports from 270 Swedish listed companies.

Results: The legislated demands are scarcely followed, 69 per cent of the companies have broken against at least one of the demands. Due to the lack of uniformed guidelines, there is a remarkable difference in the information provided and therefore the comparability decreases. The environmental information provided is, in most cases, of high quality and is relevant as well.

Noa byggde arken innan det började regna -Crisis Management ur ett styrningsperspektiv2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Recent studies have proven that a mixed working force produces better economic results for companies then does a single gendered working force. Even so, the majority of top-level positions in today’s business are held by men. Women are said to have great difficulties entering the “old-boy-networks” on the hierarchical top and leadership qualities are still strongly connected to manly attributes. Women’s inability to enter and build informal social network structures is mentioned as one of the biggest reasons when trying to explain the lack of women on top positions. The gender order in the organisations, which separates women from men, are said to be the single strongest force to influence the life of the organisation. This study focuses one how meritocratic career models influences the gender order within the organisation and if formalized career models minimize the importance informal networks. The result of the study shows that the need for informal networks in order to advance in the organisational hierarchy is of less importance in an organisation with a weak gender order were achievements and results are the only variables considered when aspiring for promotion. The importance of informal networks strengthens as the individual clime up the hierarchical career path and the study indicates that evaluation gets less formal closer to the top positions and that homosocial desire plays a significant role when aspiring for top positions.

Decentraliseringsgradens påverkan på utformningen av ett belöningssystem2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: For a company to be sucessfull if has to be able to motivate its employees to reach the calculated targets. For that to happen, goalcongruens has to be created between the company goals and the goals of the individual employee. This congruence can be achieved through the combination of different rewardsystems. It is also common that companys strive to find the perfect organisational structure in terms of decentralisation to be as effective as possible.

Purpose: The purpose with this thesis is to find out how different levels of decentralisation effects the combination of different rewardsystems.

Realization: Intervjues were carried out with 7 persons in Handelsbanken and 7 persons in Telia. Theese two organizations are said to repesent two different types of organisational structures with regards to decentralisation. The persons intervjued are situated at different levels of each organiszation.

The Result: The thesis shows that there are a number of factors affekting the design of a rewardsystem. It is also shown which types of rewardsystems that are more suitable in different types of organisational structures.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: The Swedish Police authorities have accomplished several changes the last years. We have studied one of these changes, the co-ordination of two supporting functions, economy and staffadministration at the Police authorities in Östergötland, Jönköping, Södermanland and SKL (Swedish crime technical laboratory). The initiative to this change was taken in 2002 and in 2003 a decision was made to create a joint servicecenter.

Purpose: The purpose of this rapport is, in a collaborator perspective, to study the employees´ experiences of the change process.

Method: The empirical material was collected throw interviews with the employees who have taken part in the change process. Even the leader of the project has been interviewed.

Results: We have distinguished five central aspects in the change process. These are information/communication and understanding, the project leader, teamwork, timeaspect/reflexion and the leadership. Our opinion is that the employees´ totalexperience of the change process is positive. The reason to this is that the change strategy is based on high participation and influence which the employees have appreciated. An other reason is the meeting of two different contexts. By that we mean that during the change project a bureaucratic context came across the project context which was based on comprehensive view and flexibility. The employees thought that the project context was a challenge and they found it very inspiring.
