    Abstract [en]

Large investments have been made by various governments for the deployment of broadband within their respective nations; however, the citizens of such countries have demonstrated a slow adoption of this technology.

The Handbook of Research on Global Diffusion of Broadband Data Transmission explores broadband adoption and the digital divide through a global perspective, providing up-to-date research on constructs such as relative advantage, utilitarian outcomes, hedonic outcomes, and service quality. Compiling cutting-edge research from over 100 noted experts in nearly 30 countries, this invaluable reference source allows policy makers, internet service providers, and others to gain multicultural insight into what factors actively influence consumers decisions to adopt broadband

Meaning, Authority, Rationality and Care as “MARCs” of sustainable organisations2008In: Managing in the Pacific Century, 2008, p. 1-17Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, we present MARC, a model for assessing – and improving – the health of organisationsfrom a humanistic point of view. It is a part of the quest for sustainability, currently a main theme inorganisations. The components of MARC: Meaning, Authority, Rationality, and Care, are four aspectsthat are all needed, and need to be in balance in an organisation, to provide a work situation wherepeople can sustainably thrive rather than be damaged and consumed for the sake of the organisation.Implications of the model are discussed. A conclusion is that trust is central to this healthy balance. This presents a real challenge for sustainability, as trust takes time to build – but can quickly beerased.

Socio-Economic Perspectives on the Conditions for Art Music in A Changing World: A Pre-Study2008Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The pre-study Socio-economic perspectives on the conditions for art music in a changing world attempts to create a broad foundation for art music-related research. The primary aim has been to formulate interesting questions and indicate possible ways of finding answers, not to provide the answers. The two main areas of the study are Musical life and mass consumption and Art music and society. The two areas are not completely separate - they overlap and interact to some extent, but what is foreground and background differs depending on the perspective taken.

The social network and networking technology - The emergence and fostering of the network/s of local authority energy2008Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the concept of communities of practice and networks of practice. Special focus lies on networking technologies as tools for fostering emerging network/s. More specifically, the purpose of this articel is to frame and analyse the case of local authority energy consultancy from a community perspective as well as a concept of ba perspective to judge if, and how, a network is forming among the dispersed individuals holding the energy advisor job title. The contribution of this article lies in furthering the understanding of the problems faced in establishing national networks of practice, in environments where work and social interaction is geographically dispersed. Key findings are that there are several smaller communities of local energy advisors emerging rather than one unified network holding the whole professional body together. A reason for this development is probably that it is easier to build relations in smaller groups. Further, fostering of a larger network is important to get networking started, but it is the local initiatives that have viability. Finally, as assumed, dominating means of communication are uncontroversial technologies such as e-mail and telephone.

@the tipping point: When "Enough is Enough" in email conversations2008In: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PSYCHOLOGY, ISSN 0020-7594: Volume 43, Issue 3-4, London, UK: Routledge, 2008, Vol. 43, no 3-4, p. 770-770Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The reliance on IT-mediated communication involvesinterpersonal exchanges without face-to-facecontact. However, this does not preclude emotionalexchange. Have we not all at some point engaged in e-mail exchange where facts, fantasies and contagion caused us to get caught in spiralingexchanges of increasingly emotional and decreasingly rational e-mail? The purpose here is to explore e-mail conversations perceived as going awry, in terms of negative emotional escalation. Backtracking e-mail conversations using discourse analysis and interviews, factors leading to an ‘‘emotional tipping point’’ and beyond were identified. Concludingly, psychological and managerial aspects on how then to avoid emotional escalation are derived.

Ekonomiska styrmedel inom ideella organisationer2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

New organising in Swedish third sector organisations2007In: ANZAM 2007, Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management,2007, Sidney: Australian and New Zealand Academy of Management , 2007Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article reports on an investigation among Swedish third sector organisations. Secretaries general or the equivalent have been interviewed concerning their views on challenges and developments in organising. The most prominent feature is the movement towards forms that complement a traditional hierarchy, the traditional form of most of the organisations. Different forms of networking, increased transparency, decentralisation and the use of modern information and communication technology are under way in many of the organisations. On the one hand, this may seem natural in light of developments in other parts of society. On the other hand, it represents a shift in the organisation of third sector organisations - away from the organised, controllable and providing a clear overview, towards the amorphous, the fuzzy and the difficult to define and overview. If it works, it can result in more productive activity in the organisations, in greater community spirit, and in a greater sharing of the workload in the organisation. However, there is a risk of unclear division of responsibility, of -unauthorised- ventures and greater diversity in goals pursued, and in a greater turnover of active members, threatening the continuity of operations and ventures.

    Abstract [en]

Provides a comprehensive view of Mobility and Value, based on empirical studies as well as on the application of theoretical tools and the development of those tools. The concept of mobility is more than just a fancy word for mobiles. Rather, it is an intriguing umbrella concept embracing the complexities of a different economic landscape.

Tilläggstjänster för smarta kunder: Stångåstadsmodellen för ökat kvarboende2007Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Effects of Quality Management According to ISO 9000: A Swedish Study of the Transit to ISO 9000:20002006In: Total Quality Management, ISSN 1478-3363, Vol. 17, no 8, p. 1021-1042Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of quality management in accordance with the ISO 9000 as viewed by both quality managers and other managers. We also consider the way companies carried out the re-certification process to ISO 9001:2000 and what consequences different approaches brought. The study is based on Swedish SMEs with an ISO 9000:1994 who had re-certified according to the ISO 9001:2000 standard. The strongest, most obvious and most valued effects of the ISO 9000 standard are clearer and more apparent working procedures and responsibilities. The most apparent problem is bureaucracy, which according to some managers can lead to reduced flexibility. The effects of the certification vary depending on how the certification project is conducted and how consultants are used.

    Abstract [sv]

Gaps between intended and actual use - turning problems into opportunities in health informatics2006In: International journal of public information systems, ISSN 1653-4360, Vol. 2, no 2, p. 33-53Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There has been a rapid increase in interest to utilise the www for communication between the healthcare sector and the public. However, the potential seen by proponents is far greater than the actual achieved use. Some proponents may have overrated the potential, but in many projects there is a gap between the actual and possible achievement. In this article, we explore how the gap between envisaged and actual use can be closed, drawing on published healthcare management and health informatics studies, Actor-Network Theory and using two case studies of Swedish health informatics services. We identify two important factors for closing the gap. The first is an attitude towards unintended use as a source of further valuable adoption, rather than as behaviour to be corrected. The second is the identification and promotion of networks that support the use of the eservice, rather than focusing too narrowly on the e-service itself.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Unwired Business: Cases in Mobile Business provides a source of high-quality, practical case studies of the planning, implementation and use of mobile and wireless data solutions in modern business. The selected case studies are both good examples of wireless and mobile solutions and classical cases of multiple areas of common development. Unwired Business: Cases in Mobile Business presents how these emerging technologies can help businesses create a strategic advantage in the market, typically by becoming more efficient, effective and profitable. The examples provide ideas and points of reference for managers who seek to devise and implement mobile applications for business advantage. In particular, this book is useful for managers that would like to better understand the implications of wireless and mobile technologies for today’s organizations. --This text refers to the Digital edition.

Errors help users learn?2003In: Exploring Patterns in Information Management:: concepts and perspectives for understanding IT-related change : in honour of professor Mats Lundeberg's 60th birthday / [ed] Mats Lundeberg; Bo Sundgren, Stockholm: EFI , 2003, p. 117-130Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Are errors always something negative? Ought an IT application that is being installed always be error-free when it is implemented? Or could there be any positive aspects of the existence of errors? Errors are interesting because they provoke emotions that direct our attention to the solving of the problem that caused the emotion to arise. Drawing on examples from string quartet practice and ERP systems implementation and use in an international sales organisation, this chapter develops the idea that errors can be beneficial in that they lead to the development of networks between people and, if supported, could help diminish the risk of second-level errors, interruptions of the first-level error handling.

    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a novel way of thinking about how information systems are used in organisations. Traditionally, computerised information systems are viewed as objects. In contrast, by viewing the information system as an actor, the understanding of the structuration process increases. The user, being influenced by the ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system and giving it an actor role, thereby also confers agency on the ERP system; through its very use it influences actions and thus also the structure. Based on a case study of ERP use in an ABB company over a decade, five different roles played by the ERP systems were identified. The ERP systems acted as Bureaucrat, Manipulator, Administrative assistant, Consultant or were dismissed (Dismissed) in the sense that intended users chose to avoid using them. These terms are defined in the full text. The purpose of this approach here is not to -animate- the information systems, to give them life or a mind of their own, but rather to make explicit the socially constructed roles conferred on them by users and others who are affected by them. On this basis, it is possible to suggest how the roles can help us open up new areas of exploration concerning the fruitful use of IT.

    Abstract [sv]

This chapter givesan overview of important biological vision mechanisms. Although agreat deal is known about neural processing of visual information, most essential questions about biological vision remain as yetunanswered. Nonetheless, the knowledge available has already provideduseful guidance to the organization of effective machine visionsystems.

Backbone or helping hand?: On the role of information systems and non-systematic information in managers’ workManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Information systems are often described as horizontal integrators, supporting and integrating core processes and providing vast amounts of real-time data in organisations. However, previous research indicates that managers use an “information mosaic” - a variety of pieces of information and information sources, rather than one centrally planned and unified information system - to control their work. In this paper, we explore recurring work activities among a number of managers with different responsibilities, and the use of information associated with these activities. The purpose is to put the formal computerised information system into the context of the information mosaic, thereby providing insight into how formal information systems support and do not support these managers’ work. Personnel responsibility is a uniting factor in the way these managers handle information and is an area where information systems seem to mainly support minor activities. Furthermore, the use of formal and informal information sources appears to be intertwined. The main contribution of this paper lies in charting managerial information behaviour in the light of technological development.

Beyond a common title - The development of a professional identity among energy advisorManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore if and how a professional identity can be formed in the wake of the foundation of a new public service. In the article we focus on how different forces, regulative and emergent, interact and contribute to a development of a coherent understanding of a professional identity in a decentralized service. The case of local authority energy and climate consultancy is an illustrative example of a nascent service occupation in Sweden where the individuals holding the job title are geographically dispersed.

Design/methodology/approach: This paper has a qualitative approach and relies on three different data sources: participatory observations, written documents, and in-depth interviews with energy and climate advisers working in a particular region in Sweden. The study covers the years 2005 to 2010.

Findings: Our findings suggest that identity formation among geographically dispersed individuals in a nascent service occupation is possible. The development of collective understanding of the professional identity is influenced both by regulative and emergent forces, where regulative and autonomous forces seem to concur.

Research limitations/implications: This paper is limited to one particular service occupation in Sweden from which generalizations are limited.

Practical implications: The findings may serve as useful input for management in order to understand facilitation of identity building among professionals in decentralized functions.

Originality/value: The value of this study lies in the comprehensive approach of how different pertinent forces interact with each other in order for a cohesive understanding of a work-related identity to develop in newly established service occupations.

Systems, roles and relationships in the governance ecologyManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide insight into how individuals perceive a management information and control milieu and how these perceptions influence the control practices.

Design/methodology/approach – By applying the concept of role, we highlight alternative aspects of management information and control practices found in two public sector organisations; aspects that are often obscured in the traditional literature.

Findings – Contrary to the formalised, depersonalised and top-down inspired practices often found in the management control literature, our findings indicate that bottom-up forces play an important role in the management landscape, that some key individuals serve to reinforce information flows and articulate expectations, and that signals can be faint yet still govern behaviour.

Research limitations/implications – The paper is intended to inspire further research into how structural and individual aspects of management control operate together. The empirical content, representing two organisations only, limits the strength of the conclusions.

Originality/value - Our findings add to the conventional understanding of management control, and the term governance ecology appears illustrative of the interplay among managers, information systems and other actors.

The social network and networking technology - The emergence and fostering of the network/s of local authority energyManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
