    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to study the operational competitiveness of Chinese State-Owned Manufacturing Enterprises (CSOMEs) by analysing the case CSOME and comparing it with other global manufacturing companies in a Global Manufacturing Strategies (GMSS) database for developing innovation and learning. Analytical models are used to analyse the operational competitiveness of the case CSOME and its subsidiaries based on the weights of the multicriteria manufacturing strategies. The operational competitiveness development of its subsidiaries are applied to predict the future operational competitiveness of the case CSOME in a global context. The results show that quality is the most important competitive priority of the case CSOME and the case CSOME have some advantages when competing in a prospector group. The ranking and stability of the operational competitiveness of the case CSOME imply that: (1) the top CSOMEs have a strong operational competitiveness in the global context; however, they have some gaps compared to the top manufacturing enterprises in the world and (2) it will take a long time for the top CSOMEs to improve their operational competitiveness because of a huge organisational structure.     Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to study the operational competitiveness of Chinese state-owned manufacturing enterprises (CSOME) by analyzing the case CSOME and comparing with other global manufacturing companies in a global manufacturing strategies (GMSS) database.     Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study the operational competitiveness and identify the development route of Chinese high‐tech manufacturing companies by comparing with other similar international manufacturing companies of global manufacturing strategies database.

    Design/methodology/approach – The preliminary analytical models for competitiveness analysis are used to analyze the operational competitiveness strategies in three different types of Chinese high‐tech manufacturing companies based on the weights of the multi‐criteria manufacturing strategies, which are calculated using analytic hierarchy process method. Benchmarking between case companies and leading companies of prospector, analyzer and defender groups is applied to evaluate the manufacturing strategies further.

    Findings – As a result of the case studies, it is possible to understand operational competitiveness manufacturing strategies for the case companies, to show one development route for Chinese high‐tech manufacturing companies to be competitive in their markets.

    Practical implications – Chinese high‐tech manufacturing companies have their own operational strategies in different development phase. The different weights of important factors such as quality, cost, time and flexibility make the case companies to have some advantages in prospector, analyzer and defender. The preliminary analytical models are effective for Chinese high‐tech manufacturing companies to calculate their operational competitiveness under the influence of Chinese culture and macro‐control.

    Originality/value – Benchmarking of operational competitiveness is presented to evaluate the manufacturing strategies in this paper. One development route of Chinese high‐tech manufacturing companies, which is under the influence of Chinese culture and macro‐control, is promoted.

    Abstract [en]

    In this master thesis new lifting equipment for Siemens gas turbines SGT-600/700 has been designed. It was carried out at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB in Finspång at the department for Package Installation, GPTP.

    The purpose of the thesis is to develop new lifting equipment that is more flexible than the lifting equipment at use, and that the new equipment is able to be handled with two lifting cranes.

    The project has been carried out with help from several methods like QFD (quality function deployment method), function means tree, and morphological matrix, with customer focused concept design as the foundational method. First theoretical methods to solve the problem are studied. After that a thorough study of the lifting equipment that is available today is done. Then the problem is studied to generate a solution environment. Several conceptual solutions are generated and the best concept is developed further and drawing materials are generated.

    The current lifting equipment is different depending on which module should be lifted; some parts are the same but not all. Lifting equipment that looks the same for all modules is more flexible. With the current lifting equipment it takes a big lifting crane to handle the whole load, which is a problem when the nearest harbour does not have such a big lifting crane. In those cases extra long land transports have to take place, which are very expensive. A solution which allows two lifting cranes to work together is preferred, that will lead to shorter land transports and reduced transport costs.

    The new lifting equipment has a lot fewer parts and is more flexible than the equipment in use. The new equipment can also be handled with two lifting cranes, due to the new lifting beam. The same lifting equipment is able to lift all SGT-600 and SGT-700 modules. This means that the gas turbine packages can be unloaded at most harbours in the world which leads to shorter land transports, when the nearest harbour can be used. This means that the cost for transport can be reduced.

    Hopefully this work gives Siemens better and more flexible lifting equipment if it is implemented.

    The management of cancer care pathways in a coordination centre2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    PurposeCoordination, patient centeredness and accessibility of care are important aspects for patients with complex care needs. Variations in symptoms, morbidity, care needs, and individual prerequisites are large within these patient groups which complicates diagnostics and treatment. New ways of organising health care is needed to handle these challenges and the use of solutions as multidisciplinary cancer centres and coordination centres are becoming more common.The purpose of this paper is to study how health care can be organised to care for patients with complex care needs. This is done by describing how one coordination centre works with management and coordination of care pathways in cancer care.

    Design/methodology/approachThis paper is based on a qualitative single case study where the implementation of CCPs was studied in the Region of Östergötland. Three main data collection methods were used: semi-structured interviews, observations and document studies. Sixteen interviews were held with three physicians, seven nurses, two care unit managers, two general practitioners and the coordination centres two project leaders. Ten observational studies in the form of participative and non-participative observations in meetings were conducted. A retrospective document study was also conducted where internal public documents were systematically reviewed. Pilot study reports and implementation reports, during the period 2014 to 2018 were read and analysed by conducting content analysis.

    FindingsThe UCCD was designed to take care of all potential cancer patients under ‘one roof’. This implied the need to find routines for handling a large amount of patients, with several different cancer diagnoses, and widely diverse care needs. The organisational design resulted in two diagnostic pathways: a standardised and a customised. The standardised diagnostic pathway works well for patients with clear symptoms and care needs with low complexity where the care can be standardised to follow rules and guidelines. The customised diagnostic pathway works well for patients with ambiguous symptoms care needs with high complexity where the care pathway need to be tailored and diagnostics are done by problem solving based on intuition and experience.

    Originality/Value of paperThis paper contributes with knowledge on how coordination centres can work with care pathways to improve health care coordination and quality for patients with complex care needs.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

    The Swedish health-care system currently implements cancer care pathways (CCPs) for better and more timely cancer diagnostics. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate and define “crowding out” effects associated with the CCP implementation.

    Design/methodology/approach

    A document study based on implementation reports and action plans from Swedish county councils (n = 21) and a case study in one county council were conducted. Qualitative data collection and analysis were used to acquire more knowledge about the “crowding out” effects associated with the CCP implementation.

    Findings

    Three effects discussed under “crowding out” were defined. The first effect, called the push-out effect, occurs when other patients have to wait for care longer in favour of CCP patients. Another effect is the inclusion effect, whereby “crowding out” is reduced for vulnerable patients due to the standardised procedures and criteria in the referral process. The final effect is the exclusion effect, where patients in need of cancer diagnostics are, for some reason, not referred to CCP. These patients are either not diagnosed at all or diagnosed outside CCP by a non-standard process, with the risk of longer waiting times.

    Originality/value

    “Crowding out” effects are an urgent topic related to CCP implementation. While these effects have been reported in international research studies, no shared definition has been established to describe them. The present paper creates a common base to measure the “crowding out” effects and support further development of CCPs to avoid the negative effects on waiting times.

    Abstract [en]

    Crafting and stimulating service innovation is considered a main research priority and remains a challenge for service providers. One suggested component of stimulating service innovation is customer creativity. Customers who adapt, modify and transform services or products to better suit themselves are increasingly being recognized as a source of competitive value and innovation. It has been proposed that understanding and supporting the customer’s value creating practices is the key to creating and sustaining value over time in health care. Health services directly address a customer’s well-being and have a significant impact on his or her quality of life. In these types of services, the service outcome is highly dependent on the activities of the individual customer. Health care services often require customers to participate extensively, over long periods of time, with limited support and control. Health services also stretch far beyond the particular service setting into the customer’s daily life. While research, policy, and legislation have all emphasized the active role of health care customers, such customers have traditionally had few opportunities to design their health care services. Nevertheless, health care customers solve health-related problems and engage in self-care and medical decision-making on a day-to-day basis, although this creativity is often unknown to the service provider.

    To understand how health care customers can enable service innovation, this thesis seeks to conceptualize and investigate the concept of customer creativity in health care. The thesis focuses on customer creativity, not only as an outcome, but also as a dynamic and contextualized process that can be enhanced. The thesis combines insights from health care research with service and innovation research to provide build a framework for health care customer creativity. Building on five papers, the research develops an understanding for health care customer creativity. The individual papers are based on systematic literature reviews as well as empirical data in the form of customers’ ideas for service innovation collected through diaries.

    The results of the thesis suggest that despite the negative nature of the service, health care customers are creative. Given the opportunity, health care customers can provide creative ideas and solutions on a multitude of aspects, both within and outside the health care setting. This provides the potential to view the health care experience through the customers’ eyes and take part in their creativity in spheres where the service providers have not traditionally had any access. This thesis contributes to the literature by providing a framework for health care customer creativity that recognizes the concept as a complex interplay of factors operating at the individual, contextual, and situational levels. The proposed framework specifies the health care specific factors upon which customer creativity depends, with the intention of positing potential research directions and developing an enriched theory of health care customer creativity.

    Objectives

    Despite the centrality of patient involvement in the policy and rhetoric of health care, the theoretical and empirical basis for patient involvement is lacking at the micro-level of practice. The purpose of this narrative review is to provide an overview and synthesize the current empirical research related to patient involvement at the micro-level of health care.

    Design

    Narrative review

    Data sources: A database search was conducted (in Pubmed, CINAHL, Academic Search Premier, EconLit and PsycINFO) for articles published between 1990 and April 2015 in the field of patient involvement in health care. Out of 4238 references, 214 articles were eligible for this review.

    Review methods We analyzed our sample using thematic analysis.

    Results

    The reviewed articles revealed nine themes for patient involvement, concerning enablers; empowerment, patient education, communication for involvement, staff training, service systems, types; decision making, delivery, development, and consequences of patient involvement. The themes were synthesized into a tentative model that described patient-involvement research.

    Conclusions

    Our narrative review includes a wide variety of empirical studies on patient involvement in decision-making, delivery and development, and provides an integrative perspective suggesting that patient involvement should be viewed not only as isolated activities, but also as a result of educating and preparing patients, staff and systems.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract Service innovation acts as society’s engine of renewal and provides the necessary catalyst for the service sector’s economic growth. Despite service innovation’s importance, the concept remains fuzzy and poorly defined. Building on an extensive and systematic review of 1046 academic articles, this research investigates and explores how service innovation is defined and used in research. Results identify four unique service innovation categorizations emphasizing the following traits: (1) degree of change, (2) type of change, (3) newness, and (4) means of provision. The results show that most research focuses inward and views service innovation as something (only) new to the firm. Interestingly, service innovation categorizations appear to neglect both customer value and financial performance.

    Mitt intresse för formgivning har varit en bidragande orsak till valet av arbetets inriktning. Att sedan låta barn formge sina drömmöbler föreföll sig mer eller mindre naturligt för mig. Jag har tidigare arbetat som barnskötare med ämnet färg och form. Med min bakgrund kändes det intressant och utmanande med denna projektidé som är att från barns teckningar av en drömmöbel realisera en färdig produkt. Genomförandet av mitt examensarbete började med tre frågeställningar:

    • Hur kan jag leda/iaktta barnen i deras arbete med att skapa sin egen drömmöbel?

    • Hur arbetar jag som möbelhantverkare för att utveckla och bygga barnens drömmöbler på bästa sätt?

    • Hur lyckas jag med projektet?

    För att kunna förverkliga mitt projekt har jag valt att samarbeta med sagolekhuset Junibacken som blev min länk till barnen. Många problem har uppstått men många lösningar har också funnits. Att jag själv har stått för allt arbete från att tillverka möblerna till att vara projektansvarig har på många sätt varit krävande men har också fått mig att ta flera steg framåt i min utveckling som möbelhantverkare. Mitt mål med projektet har varit att återspegla barnens egna bilder av deras drömmöbler och jag tror mig ha uppnått det. Alla sju möbler talar för sig själva och egentligen behöver jag inte säga så mycket om dem.

    Towards Increased Use of Discrete-Event Simulation for Hospital Resource Planning2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Health care systems in many countries are experiencing a growing demand while their resources remain limited. The discrepancy between demand and capacity creates many problems – long waiting times for treatment, overcrowding in hospital wards, high workload, etc. More efficient delivery of health care services can be achieved by better planning of its resources so that the mismatch between demand and capacity is minimized. Planning health care resources, including hospital resources, is difficult due to system complexity and variability in both resource availability and demand. Discrete-event simulation and other operational research methods can be used for solving planning problems in health care, and have been gaining increased attention from researchers during recent decades. Despite the growing number of academic publications, simulation appears to be less used in health care than in other application areas and only a small proportion of simulation studies is actually implemented.

    The aim of this thesis is to contribute to increased use of discrete-event simulation in hospital resource planning. The separate studies regarding intensive care unit capacity planning, operating room allocation strategies and the management of emergency patient flow in a radiology department highlight both the possibilities and the requirements for practical application of discrete-event simulation in hospital resource planning. The studies are described in five papers.

    In the first paper, the relationship between intensive care unit (ICU) occupancy and patient outcomes was investigated and the results showed that risk adjusted mortality was higher in the group of patients who were treated during high levels of occupancy. This indicates that appropriate planning of ICU resources is necessary to avoid adverse effects on patient outcomes.

    In the second paper, analysis of a relatively simple care chain consisting of two hospital departments – emergency and radiology – revealed a process that was not very well defined and measured. Investigation into data availability uncovered disparate information systems storing incompatible and fragmented data. It suggests that the current degree of process orientation and the current IT infrastructure does not enable efficient use of quantitative process analysis and management tools such as simulation.

    In the third paper, the value and possibilities of using simulation modelling in hospital resource planning were examined through the development and use of a simulation model for improved operating room time allocation and patient flow in a hospital operating department. The model was initially used for studying overcrowding in a post-anaesthesia care unit. Advanced planning logic implemented in the model enabled evaluation of several different scenarios aiming to improve the utilization of operating room resources. The results showed that it is possible to achieve slightly better and more even resource utilization, as well as provide greater flexibility in scheduling operations.

    In the fourth paper, a generic ICU model was developed and validated using data from four different hospital ICUs. The model was adapted and calibrated stepwise in order to identify important parameters and their values to obtain a match between model predictions and actual data. The study showed that in presence of high quality data and well defined process logic it is possible to develop a generic ICU simulation model that could provide accurate decision support for planning critical care resources.

    In the fifth paper, a number of factors that can contribute to successful implementation of simulation results in health care were identified. The timing of the simulation study must be right to support a critical decision, the benefit from implementation should clearly outweigh the cost of making the necessary changes and the model should be thoroughly validated to increase the credibility of the results. Staff involvement in simulation modelling activities, availability of good quality data, as well as proper incentives to improve the system contribute to implementation as well. These findings can help in establishing the conditions for successful implementation in future applications of simulation modelling in health care.

    Abstract [en]

    This article focuses on the planning and scheduling of operating rooms (ORs) in a regional hospital in Sweden. A simulation study was carried out to find new ideas and new planning and scheduling techniques to improve the overall process of surgery, including pre- and post-operating activities. This study mainly addresses the problem of low utilization of the ORs, and also takes into consideration problems with variation in workload, both in ORs and in post-anesthesia care units. The final simulation model includes pre-operative care carried out in the operating department and all ORs, as well as post-operative care units. It was driven by a number of input parameters, such as the volume and specific characteristics of actual cases, opening hours and number of ORs, and the number of beds for pre- and post-operative care. The model also includes logic for prioritizing and allocating cases to available ORs, planning operating schedules and the utilization of medical equipment limited in quantity. Output performance measures from simulation experiments include the utilization of allocated OR times, waiting time for patients, queue dynamics, number of cancellations, and variation of finishing times, as well as occupancy statistics in the post-operative care unit. Four different change alternatives were evaluated using the simulation model. Simulation experiments showed that with the implementation of the proposed changes it is possible to achieve slightly better and more even resource utilization, as well as provide greater flexibility in scheduling operations.

    Abstract [en]

    Intensive care capacity planning based on factual or forecasted mean admission numbers and mean length of stay without taking non-linearity and variability into account is fraught with error. Simulation modelling may allow for a more accurate assessment of capacity needs. We developed a generic intensive care simulation model using data generated from anonymised patient records of all admissions to four different hospital intensive care units. The model was modified and calibrated stepwise to identify important parameters and their values to obtain a match between model predictions and actual data. The most important characteristic of the final model was the dependency of admission rate on actual occupancy. Occupancy, coverage and transfers of the final model were found to be within 2% of the actual data for all four simulated intensive care units. We have shown that this model could provide accurate decision support for planning critical care resource requirements.

    Abstract [en]

    A number of academic literature surveys have shown that only a small fraction of published healthcare simulation studies are actually implemented. This research identifies factors that can contribute to successful implementation of simulation results in healthcare. The authors have been involved in a six year long simulation study in a Swedish regional hospital’s operating department. The three most important factors that contributed to implementation in this case were: the timing of simulation study to support a critical decision, advantageous cost benefit ratio of the implementation and thorough model validation. Other contributing factors included high degree of staff involvement, availability of good quality data, as well as proper incentives to improve the system. Findings of this study can help in establishing the prerequisites for successful implementation in other cases.

    Abstract [en]

    As a typical sustainable product-service system, the aero-engine overhaul service aims to recover the functionality to fulfil certain flight hours and thrust requirements. How to configure the overhaul service with various sub-services is a key issue in industry. In this paper, a use-oriented aero-engine overhaul service configuration approach is proposed with two methods: overhaul service configuration and part repair service configuration. The overhaul service configuration method decomposes the overhaul service into various sub-services and creates a hierarchical service tree model, taking the cost and energy consumption into consideration. Based on the sub-service filtering and selection rule, the bill of exchange service comes with the bill of discard service. The part repair service configuration method matches each part repair procedure service with a proper service provider. Some non-dominated bills of repair services are obtained by minimizing the repair service cost, finishing time deviation and energy consumption. Considering the multi-objective character of the overhaul service configuration problem, these two methods result in some Pareto solutions to fulfil the service requirements. Through implementing the approach as a prototype, a case study is shown to illustrate the use-oriented aero-engine overhaul service configuration approach and verify its feasibility. A bridge between the flight hours and thrust requirements and the overhaul service configuration results is built when the cost and energy consumption are minimized. The study contributes to the shift of aero-engine overhaul services from the add-on services to sustainable use-oriented product-service systems.

    Abstract [en]

    This report is one part of a masters thesis in mechanical engineeing. Is is executed at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Linköping Insitute of Technology in cooperation with Saab Aerosystems in Linköping.

    A tool for concept generation called a quantified interactive morphological matrix has been created. It is based on rules of thumb and approximations concerning aircraft fuel systems.

    The tool can be used for discarding bad concepts, with regard to weight, power consumption and MTBF, during the concept phase of a fuel system design process. The tool is ready for calibration towards a future specific area of use. It is open for validation and optimization and is specifically designed to be easily modified for different future products.

    Suggestions for future use has been given concerning expansion, implementation, validation and optimization.

    Abstract [en]

    About ten years ago Volvo Cars could see that car manufactures began to introduce rear wheel arch liners made of non-woven fabrics or some kind of laminate which are mostly common today. Volvo Cars have also seen that competitors now are beginning to develop the front wheel arch liners more and more and expect a development equal to the one for the rear wheel arch liners. This is why we are set to optimize the front wheel arch liner.

    For development of mechanical products such as car parts, a discursive method is most suitable to follow. For example systematical concept development which we have used in our work.

    From a technical point of view, our results shows that the penta laminate used for the wheel arch liner on Mercedes Benz S-class is by far the best material. Unfortunately it is rather expensive which of course affects its result in a negative way when cost is taken in to consideration. When including cost, the solid plastic is actually rather economical.

    After assessment of the result in total we are however convinced that Volvo Cars should concentrate on further research of penta laminate and open negotiations with different suppliers regarding a material of this kind.

    Regarding the geometry, the tests and studies that Volvo Cars have performed earlier on splash shields clearly shows the usage of the part and further research done by our selves does not point at any problems with a splash shield integrated in the wheel arch liner.

    Ljunghäll AB in Södra Vi has many industrial robots in their casting production. These

    robots have a tendency to wear out. The purpose with this thesis was to design a toolholder

    that was able flip to a 90 degree angle to get a more flexible production but also to

    lessen the wear on the robot.

    Parts of David G. Ullman and Ulf Liedholm’s design processes was used as a base for

    the solutions and the conceptual design.

    A number of concepts where made and one of them evaluated to be a refined concept.

    The result became a tool-holder that used an air-motor and two spur gears to rotate the

    plate where the tool is mounted to a 90 degree angle. According to the calculations that was

    made, both by hand and by the computer program COSMOS, the concept should work

    in practice. A prototype ought to be made to guarantee the function of the concept.

    Abstract [en]

    A new reality, where human labor is replaced by automated machines is causing production management to rethink how they can steer the production to meet their customers demand. There is a gap of values, techniques and tools to communicate with the processes existing in the new modern factories, where data sometimes is the single output. This thesis purpose was to develop a model out of Lean and Six Sigma, as an answer to how modern factory could work with an information system, reaching the ideal state.

     

    Through a theoretical analysis, Lean and Six Sigma differences in values, techniques and tools were weighted by the ideal state and recommendations from literature. Through a unstructured interview and system design review with a logistic group at a Swedish Modern Factory (SMF) a concept of an information system was developed. A project to test the model was initialized, where Define, Measure and Analyze phase was conducted. The model was thereafter modified from the projects implications.

     

    The result was a Lean Six Sigma model which values are customer focus, ideal state, result orientation, committed leadership, education and involvement. The technique follow a DMAIC cycle and continuous improvements through a current to future state approach. The used techniques were considered Six Sigma heavy, where Leans principles are considered into the models values. The information system supports the model in setting the processes of the factory in either stability or potential state, where they differ in Measure and Analyze phase. The test at SMF developed several assignable causes to variation on the component As lead time. The model adapted after the test to involve a Measurement System Analysis (MSA), before setting the next current state of the process.

    Abstract [en]

    The goal of this master thesis is to supply management at Saab Aeronautics with information and tools that allow for fast and effective insight into the manufacturing process. Additionally it aims to suggest improvements concerning measurements and the use of data for the internal workshops. The method of creating good performance indicators will also be part of the deliverables to Saab for future use. The master thesis is based on Analytics for Management by Tanima Chowhury and Louise Sandén, an earlier master thesis which describes a method for generating KPI:s. Furthermore the master thesis intends to answer some research questions, these questions are based around how well Analytics for Management can be adapted to a large organization like Saab and an evaluation of their previously used KPI:s. The main changes to the method as described in Analytics for Management are regarding differences in the data collection and the addition of a fourth phase. The new fourth phase uses the output from the previous three phases that are described in Analytics for Management, to assess which KPI:s are most suitable for top managerial use. The first phase utilizesthe company vision and strategy, to create suitable tactical goals. In this project, this translates to the company strategy getting linked to goals set up for the internal workshops at Saab Aeronautics. After this, in the second phase, the goals are used to produce KPI:s for the workshops. The output of phase two is therefore the chosen KPI:s that have been confirmed with management. The third phase uses the KPI:s and aims to evaluate the measurement system to either improve it or create it, if nonexistent. This part has been intentionally reduced in this report due to complexity. The fourth phase, evaluates out which KPI:s should be selected and how they should be visualized to create a good overview for management. The main result or output of the master thesis report consists of two parts, the method of generating KPI:s and the actual generated KPI:s. The KPI:s created during the master thesis are very similar to the KPI:s previously used, but improved. This indicates that the previous KPI:s is use at Saab were up to standard. However, the underlying data and traceability was not. These results generate good value for the future and the findings underline an important area. However, according to the authors, the main value should consist of highlighting the defective underlying data and solutions created to solve the problem

    Quality defects are a common problem for producing companies, but causes and consequences are often unknown. The purpose of this thesis assignment is to develop a step-by-step analysis method for identifying the root causes of quality defects based on previously examined consequences. The first steps focus on customer recovery meanwhile the following steps concentrate on process recovery. The analysis method is process-orientated as the complete production and delivery process are scrutinized upstream by the combination of commonly used quality tools.

     

    For testing the applicability of the presented method this thesis comprises a case study conducted at one company receiving complaints about quality defects. For the Case Study Company the consequences and causes of quality defects are described, analyzed and suggestions for improvement are developed.

     

    In the investigated case, the developed method helps to identify causes and consequences of incomplete delivery, the company’s major quality problem. The upstream approach proved advantages for two reasons. First of all including the customer side guarantees that the cause analysis is limited to the relevant problems. With the help of the method the severity of consequences depending on the customers’ awareness of defects and available time can be detected. Secondly problems can be scrutinized in natural order as difficulties in production once identified can be followed step by step to the causes in a preceding step. The main causes identified in this case study are a lack of process definition and of standardization. Thus, the portrayed case suggests that regular appearances of quality defects are not a coincidence. The reasons are the underlying, possibly insufficiently defined and managed processes.

     

    The general finding of the thesis assignment is the presented analysis method that comprises a systematic process-oriented approach designed to examine consequences and causes of quality defects. In contrast to the root cause analysis approaches found in literature each analysis step is described in detail. This makes the method easy to apply in practice. Therefore the method is a valid tool to deal with a high degree of complexity. The case study proved that it is effective and efficient to scrutinize problems with these characteristics. Under different circumstances the application of single quality tools might be sufficient and hence resource effective. Further investigation is necessary since this method has only been tested in one case study.

    Den första januari 2011 blir den Svenska övergången till Eurocode inom Geoteknik mer definitiv i samband med att Boverket antar det nya regelverket. Geotekniska handläggare och fält-/labtekniker får i och med övergången ett nytt ramverk för rapportering och redovisning att arbeta efter. Den nya standarden kommer leda till en förbättrad kvalité på arbetet då kraven på redovisningens innehåll samt tillgänglighet ökar. Den kommer även befrämja den fria marknaden, både nationellt och internationellt. Det rapporteringssystem som i dagsläget används kommer ersättas av ett nytt som innefattar fem olika dokumenttyper. Dessa dokumenttyper är:

    1. Underlagsrapport
    2. Försöksrapport
    3. Markteknisk undersökningsrapport
    4. Projekterings PM
    5. Förfrågningsunderlag.

    Innehållet i de nya rapporttyperna knyter i många avseenden an till innehållet i de som används idag. Den nya rapporteringsmodellen ställer dock ur ett dokumenteringsperspektiv högre krav på handläggare och tekniker. Modellen kommer provocera fram en mer detaljerad och innehållsrik kommunikation mellan fält, laboratorium och kontor. Tanken är att personer som inte varit inblandade i ett projekts tidigare skeden skall kunna ta till sig alla förutsättningar med hjälp av de nya dokumenten. Mer ansvar kommer läggas på lab-/fälttekniker vad avser kvalitet och dokumentation i projektens undersökningsfas. För att man från fält och lab. skall kunna ta fram rätt underlag till fortsatt projektering måste handläggare tydligare precisera vilken typ av information, utöver den traditionella, som måste finnas med i resultatredovisningen. För att övergången inte i för stor utsträckning skall påverka handläggningstid och projekteringskostnad måste företagen anpassa sin verksamhet efter de nya spelregler som Eurocode medför.

    Abstract [en]

    In an attempt to solve a problem concerning drilling, a project was started at the universities in Linköping and Lund. As a part of the project this thesis aims to help solve the drilling problem. The goal of this thesis is to design an end effector that will help avoid slipping when drilling. The methods used were taken from David G. Ullman’s book The Mechanical Design Process. Members involved in the project were interviewed to get an understanding of the task. With that done the concept generation phase began, resulting in several concepts. With the use of evaluation methods, such as feasibility judgment and Go/No-Go screening, a final concept emerged. All of the parts and details of the concept were designed with respect for the customers’ requirements and demands.

    The present study concerns a concept development of a product idea that Bengt Magnuson, associate professor, had when a heavy storm caused a widespread power failure of long duration. With a basic power-producing unit one should be able to get through a power loss. The product could also be useful for other tasks if different modules are connected, e g grass mower or snow-blower.

    According to the product idea the basic unit will be able to produce electric power enough for a fridge, freezer, TV, and a few electric lamps. Normally the basic unit can be used e g as a mower, when such a module is attached. An increased number of tasks would make the contraption useful and tempting for those who do not own an electrical power set in reserve. The study was limited, not involving the construction and characteristics of the power set, as such systems already exist. Power sets will be discussed according to size, weight, and effect to estimate there suitability in the base unit. Also was a consumers investigation not Per-formed, as the study is supposed to produce a basis for such an enquiry.

    During the concept development, five ideas were compared in order to reach the best solution. This solution was compared to the alternative solutions which were brought forward at the critical scrutinisation of the product idea.

    The result that was reached implied that the product would deflect buyers due to the considerable weight. Even if the weight would be reduced by making the generator unit lighter, two alternative solutions were considered better. One of them would use an alternator and put it on a modified mower with an extra shaft-coupling. The other one would be to add an alternator generator to a system already on the market, where the same motor could be moved between different products.

    In conclusion: One should not continue further development of the original product idea but instead use one of the alternative solutions and perform a consumer’s investigation on that one. It is important as a need for an electricity supply in reserve seems to exist for many people outside the central urban areas.

    Abstract [en]

    In order to achieve results that are reliable when using the finite element method one has to use an acceptable element mesh with respect to the shape and size of the elements. As a help to produce an acceptable mesh there are quality criteria that must be fulfilled in most pre-processors.

    One objective with this thesis is to perform a sensitivity study that can be used as a basis for a Mesh guideline for chassis parts which is requested from engineers at Volvo 3P. The software used in the sensitivity study is ANSA as pre-processor, Nastran as solver and Metapost as post-processor.

    In the first part of the sensitivity study three different models are used for studying quality criteria such as aspect ratio, skewness, mid point alignment, mid point deviation and element size. Solid elements of second order, which are used in the three models, can be generated in two ways, which constitutes another part of the sensitivity study. They may either be generated from the beginning or can be converted from first order elements. This means geometrically that if second order elements where generated from the beginning the element mesh would follow the shape of the component in a better way compared to the other method.

    Recently a pre- and post-processing program called SimLab was introduced on the market. Since SimLab supports geometry import from several CAD-systems without loss of feature information, the automatic element mesh generation is supposed to be better as the mesh generator has access to more information concerning the geometry. An evaluation of SimLab is the second major objective of the thesis. More specifically, the evaluation concerns the possibility of using the software at Volvo 3P.

    Results show a surprising insensitivity regarding the criteria and that the method of generating second order elements from the beginning is to be preferred. SimLab is a new program with big potential and the conclusion is that it is possible to use it at Volvo 3P.
