Oversubscription planning: Complexity and compilability2014Inngår i: Proceedings of the Twenty-Eighth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, AI Access Foundation , 2014, Vol. 3, s. 2221-2227Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Many real-world planning problems are oversubscription problems where all goals are not simultaneously achievable and the planner needs to find a feasible subset. We present complexity results for the so-called partial satisfaction and net benefit problems under various restrictions; this extends previous work by van den Briel et al. Our results reveal strong connections between these problems and with classical planning. We also present a method for efficiently compiling oversubscription problems into the ordinary plan existence problem; this can be viewed as a continuation of earlier work by Keyder and Geffner.

Jämförelse av aggregeringswebbdelar i MOSS 20072010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Generating web applications containing XSS and CSRF vulnerabilities2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Most of the people in the industrial world are using several web applications every day. Many of those web applications contain vulnerabilities that can allow attackers to steal sensitive data from the web application's users. One way to detect these vulnerabilities is to have a penetration tester examine the web application. A common way to train penetration testers to find vulnerabilities is to challenge them with realistic web applications that contain vulnerabilities. The penetration tester's assignment is to try to locate and exploit the vulnerabilities in the web application. Training on the same web application twice will not provide any new challenges to the penetration tester, because the penetration tester already knows how to exploit all the vulnerabilities in the web application. Therefore, a vast number of web applications and variants of web applications are needed to train on.

This thesis describes a tool designed and developed to automatically generate vulnerable web applications. First a web application is prepared, so that the tool can generate a vulnerable version of the web application. The tool injects Cross Site Scripting (XSS) and Cross Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerabilities in prepared web applications. Different variations of the same vulnerability can also be injected, so that different methods are needed to exploit the vulnerability depending on the variation. A purpose of the tool is that it should generate web applications which shall be used to train penetration testers, and some of the vulnerabilities the tool can inject, cannot be detected by current free web application vulnerability scanners, and would thus need to be detected by a penetration tester.

To inject the vulnerabilities, the tool uses abstract syntax trees and taint analysis to detect where vulnerabilities can be injected in the prepared web applications.

Tests confirm that web application vulnerability scanners cannot find all the vulnerabilities on the web applications which have been generated by the tool.

Prometheus: Prediction and interpretation of human behaviour based on probabilistic structures and heterogeneous sensors2008Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The on-going EU funded project Prometheus (FP7-214901) aims at establishing a general framework which links fundamental sensing tasks to automated cognition processes enabling interpretation and short-term prediction of individual and collective human behaviours in unrestricted environments as well as complex human interactions. To achieve the aforementioned goals, the Prometheus consortium works on the following core scientific and technological objectives:

    1. sensor modeling and information fusion from multiple, heterogeneous perceptual modalities;

    2. modeling, localization, and tracking of multiple people;

    3. modeling, recognition, and short-term prediction of continuous complex human behavior.

Evaluating Template Rescaling in Short-Term Single-Object Tracking2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, short-term single-object tracking has emerged has a popular research topic, as it constitutes the core of more general tracking systems. Many such tracking methods are based on matching a part of the image with a template that is learnt online and represented by, for example, a correlation filter or a distribution field. In order for such a tracker to be able to not only find the position, but also the scale, of the tracked object in the next frame, some kind of scale estimation step is needed. This step is sometimes separate from the position estimation step, but is nevertheless jointly evaluated in de facto benchmarks. However, for practical as well as scientific reasons, the scale estimation step should be evaluated separately – for example, theremightincertainsituationsbeothermethodsmore suitable for the task. In this paper, we describe an evaluation method for scale estimation in template-based short-term single-object tracking, and evaluate two state-of-the-art tracking methods where estimation of scale and position are separable.

Efficient active appearance model for real-time head and facial feature tracking2003Inngår i: Analysis and Modeling of Faces and Gestures, 2003. AMFG 2003. IEEE International Workshop on, IEEE conference proceedings, 2003, s. 173-180Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We address the 3D tracking of pose and animation of the human face in monocular image sequences using active appearance models. The classical appearance-based tracking suffers from two disadvantages: (i) the estimated out-of-plane motions are not very accurate, and (ii) the convergence of the optimization process to desired minima is not guaranteed. We aim at designing an efficient active appearance model, which is able to cope with the above disadvantages by retaining the strengths of feature-based and featureless tracking methodologies. For each frame, the adaptation is split into two consecutive stages. In the first stage, the 3D head pose is recovered using robust statistics and a measure of consistency with a statistical model of a face texture. In the second stage, the local motion associated with some facial features is recovered using the concept of the active appearance model search. Tracking experiments and method comparison demonstrate the robustness and out-performance of the developed framework.

Surveillance Systems for Urban Crisis Management2005Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

We present a concept for combing 3D models and multiple heterogeneous sensors into a surveillance system enabling superior situation awareness. The concept has many military as well as civilian applications. A key issue is the use of a 3D environment model of the area to be surveyed, typically an urban area. In addition to the 3D model, the area of interest is monitored over time using multiple heterogeneous sensors, such as optical, acoustic, and/or seismic sensors. Data and analysis results from the sensors are visualized in the 3D model, thus putting them in a common reference frame and making their spatial and temporal relations obvious. The result is highlighted by an example where data from different sensor systems is integrated in a 3D model of a Swedish urban area.

Representing and Compressing MPEG-4 Facial Animation Parameters using Facial Action Basis Functions1999Inngår i: IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, ISSN 0098-4094, E-ISSN 1558-1276, Vol. 9, nr 3, s. 405-410Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In model-based, or semantic, coding, parameters describing the nonrigid motion of objects, e.g., the mimics of a face, are of crucial interest. The facial animation parameters (FAPs) specified in MPEG-4 compose a very rich set of such parameters, allowing a wide range of facial motion. However, the FAPs are typically correlated and also constrained in their motion due to the physiology of the human face. We seek here to utilize this spatial correlation to achieve efficient compression. As it does not introduce any interframe delay, the method is suitable for interactive applications, e.g., videophone and interactive video, where low delay is a vital issue.

Multi-person fever screening using a thermal and a visual camera2015Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

We propose a system to automatically measure the body temperature of persons as they pass. In contrast to exisitng systems, the persons do not need to stop and look into a camera one-by-one. Instead, their eye corners are automatically detected and the temperatures therein measured using a thermal camera. The system handles multiple simultaneous persons and can thus be used where a flow of people pass, such as at airport gates.

Three-dimensional hyperspectral imaging technique2017Inngår i: ALGORITHMS AND TECHNOLOGIES FOR MULTISPECTRAL, HYPERSPECTRAL, AND ULTRASPECTRAL IMAGERY XXIII / [ed] Miguel Velez-Reyes; David W. Messinger, SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering, 2017, Vol. 10198, artikkel-id 1019805Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Hyperspectral remote sensing based on unmanned airborne vehicles is a field increasing in importance. The combined functionality of simultaneous hyperspectral and geometric modeling is less developed. A configuration has been developed that enables the reconstruction of the hyperspectral three-dimensional (3D) environment. The hyperspectral camera is based on a linear variable filter and a high frame rate, high resolution camera enabling point-to-point matching and 3D reconstruction. This allows the information to be combined into a single and complete 3D hyperspectral model. In this paper, we describe the camera and illustrate capabilities and difficulties through real-world experiments.

An information measure of sensor performance and its relation to the ROC curve2010Inngår i: Proc. SPIE 7695, Algorithms and Technologies for Multispectral, Hyperspectral, and Ultraspectral Imagery XVI / [ed] Sylvia S. Shen; Paul E. Lewis, SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering, 2010, s. Art.nr. 7695-72-Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The ROC curve is the most frequently used performance measure for detection methods and the underlying sensor configuration. Common problems are that the ROC curve does not present a single number that can be compared to other systems and that no discrimination between sensor performance and algorithm performance is done. To address the first problem, a number of measures are used in practice, like detection rate at a specific false alarm rate, or area-under-curve. For the second problem, we proposed in a previous paper1 an information theoretic method for measuring sensor performance. We now relate the method to the ROC curve, show that it is equivalent to selecting a certain point on the ROC curve, and that this point is easily determined. Our scope is hyperspectral data, studying discrimination between single pixels.

Improved Temporal Resolution Using Parallel Imaging in Radial-Cartesian 3D functional MRI2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a medical imaging method that uses magnetic fields in order to retrieve images of the human body. This thesis revolves around a novel acquisition method of 3D fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) called PRESTO-CAN that uses a radial pattern in order to sample the (kx,kz)-plane of k-space (the frequency domain), and a Cartesian sample pattern in the ky-direction. The radial sample pattern allows for a denser sampling of the central parts of k-space, which contain the most basic frequency information about the structure of the recorded object. This allows for higher temporal resolution to be achieved compared with other sampling methods since a fewer amount of total samples are needed in order to retrieve enough information about how the object has changed over time. Since fMRI is mainly used for monitoring blood flow in the brain, increased temporal resolution means that we can be able to track fast changes in brain activity more efficiently. The temporal resolution can be further improved by reducing the time needed for scanning, which in turn can be achieved by applying parallel imaging. One such parallel imaging method is SENSE (SENSitivity Encoding). The scan time is reduced by decreasing the sampling density, which causes aliasing in the recorded images. The aliasing is removed by the SENSE method by utilizing the extra information provided by the fact that multiple receiver coils with differing sensitivities are used during the acquisition. By measuring the sensitivities of the respective receiver coils and solving an equation system with the aliased images, it is possible to calculate how they would have looked like without aliasing. In this master thesis, SENSE has been successfully implemented in PRESTO-CAN. By using normalized convolution in order to refine the sensitivity maps of the receiver coils, images with satisfying quality was able to be reconstructed when reducing the k-space sample rate by a factor of 2, and images of relatively good quality also when the sample rate was reduced by a factor of 4. In this way, this thesis has been able to contribute to the improvement of the temporal resolution of the PRESTO-CAN method.

BryggaHem – Development of an E-commerce Web Application with a Usability Focus2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is part of a bachelor’s project conducted at Linköping University and addresses the development of an e-commerce web application with a usability focus. A market survey was conducted as part of the project to establish the orientation of the web application. Furthermore, the Scrum methodology is described and analyzed, and the team’s experiences of the project are documented. Research relevant to designing an application with high usability is detailed. Additionally the thesis addresses the tools and frameworks used during the development of the application, as well as ethical aspects of handling user information and selling products related to home-brewing of alcoholic beverages. The conclusion drawn from the project regarding the methodology is that Scrum is a viable methodology for this type of development work, although it requires small teams as well as previous experience of Scrum to yield high efficiency. The conclusion drawn from the project regarding usability is that it is achieved through a combination of variables that to a large extent is based on users’ distinct perceptions of the given application.

Minimizing memory requirements for deterministic test data in embedded testing2010Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Embedded and automated tests reduce maintenance costs for embedded systems installed in remote locations. Testing multiple components of an embedded system, connected on a scan chain, using deterministic test patterns stored in a system provide high fault coverage but require large system memory. This thesis presents an approach to reduce test data memory requirements by the use of a test controller program, utilizing the observation of that there are multiple components of the same type in a system. The program use deterministic test patterns specific to every component type, which is stored in system memory, to create fully defined test patterns when needed. By storing deterministic test patterns specific to every component type, the program can use the test patterns for multiple tests and several times within the same test. The program also has the ability to test parts of a system without affecting the normal functional operation of the rest of the components in the system and without an increase of test data memory requirements. Two experiments were conducted to determine how much test data memory requirements are reduced using the approach presented in this thesis. The results for the experiments show up to 26.4% reduction of test data memory requirements for ITC´02 SOC test benchmarks and in average 60% reduction of test data memory requirements for designs generated to gain statistical data.

Encryption in Delocalized Access Systems2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The recent increase in performance of embedded processors has enabled the use of computationally heavy asymmetric cryptography in small and power efficient embedded systems. The goal of this thesis is to analyze whether it is possible to use this type of cryptography to enhance the security in access systems.

This report contains a literature study of the complications related to access systems and their functionality. Also a basic introduction to cryptography is included.

Several cryptographic algorithms were implemented using the public library LibTomCrypt and benchmarked on an ARM7-processor platform. The asymmetric coding schemes were ECC and RSA. The tested symmetric algorithms included AES, 3DES and Twofish among others. The benchmark considered both codesize and speed of the algorithms.

The two asymmetric algorithms, ECC and RSA, are possible to be used in an ARM7 based access system. Although, both technologies can be configured to finish the calculations within a reasonable time-frame of 10 Sec, ECC archives a higher security level for the same execution time. Therefore, an implementation of ECC would be preferable since it is faster and requires less resources. Some further suggestions of improvements to the implementation is discussed in the final chapters.

The purpose with this thesis was to study user activities in a business system, MediusFlow. The overall objective was to identify user related problems and to analyse which of the usability data gathering methods to use in the future development process of the company Medius.

The outcome of this study indicated that a cognitive related user problem was the most important problem to solve. A Star Life Cycle method was preferred. Two low-fidelity prototypes were developed to exemplify an alternative design solution to the identified cognitive user problem. Furthermore, the two best methods to use when gathering user related requirements were heuristic evaluation and expert review.

In addition a company specific Style Guide was created with generic guidelines as a foundation for development of future applications within Medius.

Affärsstrategier för seniorbostadsmarknaden2005Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Design of Two-Tone RF Generator for On-Chip IP3/IP2 Test2019Inngår i: Journal of electronic testing, ISSN 0923-8174, E-ISSN 1573-0727, Vol. 35, nr 1, s. 77-85Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper a built-in-self-test (BiST) aimed at the third and second intercept point (IP3/IP2) characterization of RF receiver is discussed with a focus on a stimulus generator. The generator is designed based on a specialized phase-lock loop (PLL) architecture with two voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) operating in GHz frequency range. The objective of PLL is to keep the VCOs frequency spacing under control. According to the test requirements the phase noise and nonlinear distortion of the two-tone generator are considered as a merit for the design of VCOs and analog adder. The PLL reference spurs, critical for the IP3 measurement, are avoided by means of a frequency doubling technique. The circuit is designed in 65nm CMOS. A highly linear analog adder with OIP3amp;gt;+15dBm and ring VCOs with phase noise amp;lt; -104 dBc/Hz at 1MHz offset are used to generate the RF stimulus of total power greater than -22dBm. In simulations a performance sufficient for IP3/IP2 test of a typical RF CMOS receiver is demonstrated.

A Systematic Literature Review of "Usability Inspection Methods"2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Usability inspection methods are a class of usability evaluation methods, applied by usability evaluators to assess usability related aspects of different user interfaces. Different usability inspection methods are proposed so far to evaluate user interfaces in a better way. This systematic literature review summarized different usability evaluation methods, with more focus on two widely used inspection methods. The review also summarized the problems with these two methods and probable proposed solution to cope with these problems.

Method: A systematic review method as described by Kitchenham [3] was followed to carry out this review. The identified problems in the review were structured in a form of questions. The search to find the relevant data that address the identified questions were conducted on the basis of planned search strategies. Papers were selected on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria in accordance with the quality checklist; followed by data extraction and synthesis strictly characterized by quality checklist, inclusion and exclusion criteria to attain better results.

Results and discussion: Despite of its advantages there still exists many weaknesses in Heuristic evaluation (HE) and Cognitive walk-through (CW) methods. Different studies have highlighted different factors that may influence the results. Those factors include number of evaluators, evaluator’s perception and experience, time, environment, cost, indigenous design, the way method applied and acquired software.

Conclusion: To get better evaluation results, it is best to use different techniques for usability evaluation of single software or optimize existing techniques.

A 512-point 8-parallel pipelined feedforward FFT for WPAN2011Inngår i: 2011 Conference Record of the Forty Fifth Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems and Computers (ASILOMAR), IEEE , 2011, s. 981-984Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a 512-point feedforward FFT architecture for wireless personal area network (WPAN). The architecture processes a continuous flow of 8 samples in parallel, leading to a throughput of 2.64 GSamples/s. The FFT is computed in three stages that use radix-8 butterflies. This radix reduces significantly the number of rotators with respect to previous approaches based on radix-2. Besides, the proposed architecture uses the minimum memory that is required for a 512-point 8-parallel FFT. Experimental results show that besides its high throughput, the design is efficient in area and power consumption, improving the results of previous approaches. Specifically, for a wordlength of 16 bits, the proposed design consumes 61.5 mW and its area is 1.43 mm2.

Distributed Computing in Peer-to-peer Networks2004Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree)Oppgave
    Abstract [en]

Concepts like peer-to-peer networks and distributed computing are not new. They have been available in different forms for a long time. This thesis examines the possibility of merging these concepts. The assumption is that non-centralized peer-to-peer networks can be used for effective sharing of computing resources. While most peer-to-peer systems today concentrate on sharing of data in various forms, this thesis concentrates on sharing of clock cycles instead of files.

Requirements on HRA?: A review of requirements on HRA from international standards, swedish NPP's and interviews with performers in the field.2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

HRA (Human Reliability Analysis) is a part of PSA (Probabilistic Risk Assessment) to evaluate if and which human actions that could contribute to a core damage in a NPP (Nuclear Power Plant). This thesis investigates requirements that are put on HRA in connection to requirements that are put on the PSA, both from the view of international standard but also through HRA method descriptions and performed analyses from Swedish NPPs as well as through interviews with performers in the field.

The results shows that the requirements that are put on the HRA from the international standards are generic (few specific requirements are to be found) and can be said to be reflected in the performed analysis on Swedish NPPs. Another result shows that there isn't much difference between different NPP units on how the HRA is performed; the general requirements from the international standards are most often followed in some sense. There is more a questions of level of detail and/or traceability described in the analysis that can be said to be of difference. The results also shows on the fact that it is very hard to transform the more qualitative results from the HRA into a quantitative value that can work as an input to the PSA. Some of the interviewees expressed a sort of resignation that it felt as if the qualitative parts of the HRA weren't seen in the same light as the quantitative parts, and that there is no consensus on how for example factors that influence the work of the operators (such as stress, the quality of instructions, complexity of the task or available time) in a reliable way can be evaluated quantitatively. This is something that further research could be focused on.

    Abstract [en]

This paper profiles the Europarl part of an English-Swedish parallel corpus and compares it with three other subcorpora of the sameparallel corpus. We first describe our method for comparison which is based on alignments, both at the token level and the structurallevel. Although two of the other subcorpora contains fiction, it is found that the Europarl part is the one having the highest proportion ofmany types of restructurings, including additions, deletions and long distance reorderings. We explain this by the fact that the majorityof Europarl segments are parallel translations.

    Abstract [en]

As machine translation technology improves comparisons to human performance are often made in quite general and exaggerated terms. Thus, it is important to be able to account for differences accurately. This paper reports a simple, descriptive scheme for comparing translations and applies it to two translations of a British opinion article published in March, 2017. One is a human translation (HT) into Swedish, and the other a machine translation (MT). While the comparison is limited to one text, the results are indicative of current limitations in MT.

Converting an English-Swedish Parallel Treebank to Universal Dependencies2015Inngår i: Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Dependency Linguistics (DepLing 2015), Association for Computational Linguistics, 2015, s. 10-19, artikkel-id W15-2103Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The paper reports experiences of automatically converting the dependency analysis of the LinES English-Swedish parallel treebank to universal dependencies (UD). The most tangible result is a version of the treebank that actually employs the relations and parts-of-speech categories required by UD, and no other. It is also more complete in that punctuation marks have received dependencies, which is not the case in the original version. We discuss our method in the light of problems that arise from the desire to keep the syntactic analyses of a parallel treebank internally consistent, while available monolingual UD treebanks for English and Swedish diverge somewhat in their use of UD annotations. Finally, we compare the output from the conversion program with the existing UD treebanks.

This paper presents an English-Swedish Parallel Treebank, LinES, that is currently under development. LinES is intended as a resource for the study of variation in translation of common syntactic constructions from English to Swedish. For this reason, annotation in LinES is syntactically oriented, multi-level, complete and manually reviewed according to guidelines. Another aim of LinES is to support queries made in terms of types of translation shifts.

    Abstract [en]

As the first holder of the first chair in computational linguistics in Sweden, Anna Sågvall Hein has played a central role in the development of computational linguistics and language technology both in Sweden and on the international scene. Besides her valuable contributions to research, which include work on machine translation, syntactic parsing, grammar checking, word prediction, and corpus linguistics, she has been instrumental in establishing a national graduate school in language technology as well as an undergraduate program in language technology at Uppsala University. It is with great pleasure that we present her with this Festschrift to honor her lasting contributions to the field and to commemorate her retirement from the chair in computational linguistics at Uppsala University. The contributions to the Festschrift come from Anna’s friends and colleagues around the world and deal with many of the topics that are dear to her heart. A common theme in many of the articles, as well as in Anna’s own scientific work, is the design, development and use of adequate language technology resources, epitomized in the title Resourceful Language Technology.

    Abstract [en]

In principle the CLARIN research infrastructure provides a good environment to support research on translation. In reality, the progress within CLARIN in this area seems to be fairly slow. In this paper I will give examples of the resources currently available, and suggest what is needed to achieve a relevant research infrastructure for translation studies. Also, I argue that translation studies has more to gain from language technology, and statistical machine translation in particular, than what is generally assumed, and give some examples.

    Abstract [en]

Aligned parallel corpora constitute a critical information resource for a great number of linguistic and technological endeavors. Automatic sentence alignment has reached a level whereby large parallel documents can be fully aligned with the aid of interactive post-editing tools. Word alignment systems have not yet reached the same level of performance, but are good enough to support full word alignment if embedded in an interactive system. In this paper we describe a system for fast and accurate word alignment currently under development at our department, where the user can review and improve the output from an automatic system in an incremental fashion.

A knowledge-lite approach to word alignment2000Inngår i: Parallel Text Processing: Alignment and Use of Translation Corpora / [ed] Jean Veronis, Dordrecht, The Netherlands: Kluwer Academic Publishers, 2000, s. 97-116Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The most promising approach to word alignment is to combine statistical methods with non-statistical information sources. Some of the proposed non-statistical sources, including bilingual dictionaries, POS-taggers and lemmatizers, rely on considerable linguistic knowledge, while other knowledge-lite sources such as cognate heuristics and word order heuristics can be implemented relatively easy. While knowledge-heavy sources might be expected to give better performance, knowledge-lite systems are easier to port to new language pairs and text types, and they can give sufficiently good results for many purposes, e.g. if the output is to be used by a human user for the creation of a complete word-aligned bitext. In this paper we describe the current status of the Linköping Word Aligner (LWA), which combines the use of statistical measures of co-occurrence with four knowledge-lite modules for (i)) word categorization, (ii) morphological variation, (iii) word order, and (iv) phrase recognition. We demonstrate the portability of the system (from English-Swedish texts to French-English texts) and present results for these two language-pairs. Finally, we will report observations from an error analysis of system output, and identify the major strengths and weaknesses of the system.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor's thesis accounts for the results and takeaways from the process of developing the web application for Awesome Fragrance Company. The goal of this thesis is to provide an increased understanding of how a usable web application can be designed, by studying the development of an online store with the purpose of selling fragrance samples. The agile method Scrum has been the foundation of the development, and based on this, the focus has been to develop a continuously deliverable product, where functionality is added in increments. By starting with a rough prototype and then gradually adjusting the final vision for the product based on feedback, the group has developed an online store which, according to users, is usable and intuitive. Thus, the group has created a foundation for further research on usable web applications, which was the goal of the project.

    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a dual band LNA that can be switched between two bands (2.4 GHz & 5.2 GHz) for IEEE 802.1 la/b/g WLAN applications. The LNA is also tunable within each band and the tuning is incorporated by on-chip varactors. The test chip consists of two fully integrated narrow-band tunable LNAs along with SPDT switch. For power saving one LNA can be switched off. The technology process is 0.2 mum GaAs offered by OMMIC. The LNA can achieve a relatively good performance over the two bands as demonstrated by simulation. With a 3V supply, the LNA has a gain of 26.2 dB at 2.4 GHz and 21.8 dB at 5.2 GHz and the corresponding NF varies between 2.07 dB and 1.84 dB, respectively. The LNA has an IIP3 of -7 dBm at 2.4 GHz and -1.6 dBm at 5.2 GHz.

The PROMFA concept is based on an array of generic cells, in which a number of different functions can be realized. Each PROMFA cell is a four-port circuit, that can either be programmed independently or collectively according to a specific need. Specifically, the phase shift capability in a single PROMFA cell, useful for a new type of phase shifter design is discussed. The paper also presents the functionality of this new architecture as a beamforming network. As an example case an active corporate feed network and a tunable recursive filter is demonstrated. Simulated and measured results are presented.

Operationalizing Industrial Ecology in the Waste Sector: Roles and tactics for circular value innovation2017Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The take-make-waste approach to resource management in human production and consumption systems is contributing to a variety of environmental and social problems worldwide. Additionally, as the world’s population and affluence increase, so do the negative impacts of poor resource management. Lifting the waste management (WM) sector into a new phase of development, which takes its lead from the ideals of Industrial Ecology and circular economy, is seen by many scholars and practitioners as one potential to assist in alleviating these impacts. While there are many studies on how more efficient inter-organizational resource management is (or could be) constructed, there are relatively few business development studies which have explored novel approaches (from roles to tactics) that WM organizations might operationalize toward more efficient resource management.

The aim of this thesis is to contribute to the development of knowledge and understanding of how the waste management sector can operationalize more effective and efficient resource management. In approaching this aim, two research questions guided the exploration of: 1) novel roles for WM and 2) support tactics for such roles. Grounded in the broader context of Industrial Ecology (IE) and Business Development, five studies were performed. Two studies, focused on the novel roles of inter-organizational resource management and high value secondary resource extraction, were performed through literature review and interviews, and market driver analysis respectively. In exploring support tactics, two design and proof of concept studies were carried out to investigate data analysis tools for inter-organizational resource management, and one long-term action research engagement project was coordinated to study hands-on inter-organizational collaboration tactics.

The studies highlighted that the Swedish WM sector holds some key capacities for operationalizing (and in some cases, is already developing) the novel resource management roles identified: industrial symbiosis facilitator, eco-industrial park manager, holistic facility management, and high value resource extractor. However, depending on the portfolio of services to be performed in such roles, several capacities may need to be developed or strengthened. Main opportunities seen for these roles were – staying ahead of market developments, and aligning activities with organizational goals. The main general risk related to these roles was insufficient returns on investment. Looking forward, the main enablers identified were policy leadership for more balanced market mechanisms, increasing use of external knowledge, developing long term partnerships, lobbying, stockpiling resources, and carefully crafting new business models.

The tools developed for strategically applying external information toward the identification of opportunities within new roles showed tactical potential. However, their implementation in broader development processes has yet to be fully validated. The hands-on exploration of change oriented collaboration, highlighted collective system framing and goal setting and face-to-face interaction as key activities for inter-organizational approaches within roles such as industrial symbiosis facilitator.

Throughout the studies, several novel roles were investigated. Each of these roles will need to be individually evaluated by directing bodies of WM organizations, and evaluated from the organization’s vision and strategy. If certain roles are chosen to be explored in more detail, they will need to be developed within full business models - addressing issues such as income structure, internal processes and capacities to be developed, and key customers. Through applying IE and business development concepts and findings, WM organizations have possibilities to translate ambitious visions into novel offerings.

    Abstract [en]

Several waste management (WM) professionals see an ongoing shift in the focus of the industry, from that of atransport and treatment sector to that of a more integrated sustainable service provision and material productionsector. To further develop such transitional ambitions, WM organizations are increasingly looking toward interorganizationalresource network concepts (such as the circular economy and industrial symbiosis) as models ofhow they would like to create new value together with their customers and partners. This article aims to take a step in addressing uncertainties behind such transitions by analyzing barriers forinter-organizational resource management and in turn uncovering some potential opportunities and risks ofnovel offerings from the WM sector. Obstacles for developing innovative inter-organizational resource networkshave been identified based on studies of implementing industrial symbiosis networks. Subsequently, managingexecutives from Swedish private and public WM organizations were interviewed regarding the sector’s capacityto overcome such barriers – opportunities and risks of providing new resource management services – and howtheir organizations might approach the role of actively facilitating more resource efficient regions.Eco-Industrial park management and contracting out holistic resource management are some areas in whichthe respondents see WM organizations offering new services. In relation to such approaches, various risks (e.g.being cut out of investment benefits, or unstable supply) and opportunities (e.g. new markets and enhancedsustainability profiles) were identified. Additionally, it was seen that WM companies would need to makesubstantial changes to their business approach, becoming less dependent on flows of mixed materials forexample, if they are to become even more central value chain actors. To strengthen such approaches, it was seenthat the sector will need to find methods to strategically build strong, long term partnerships, expand upon andtake advantage of available knowledge resources (i.e. best practice technologies and regional material flows),and explore new business models (i.e. stockpiling, park management, or waste minimization). Additionally, working with sector representatives to argue for a more balanced market conditions next to primary productionshould assist the viability of new offerings in the wider market.

Even though it’s well known that our common resources are limited and that recycling is key for a sustainable future; inreality we see few examples of true recycling where virgin raw material is substituted by waste. There are endless numbers ofexamples where waste is utilized to some extent without solving the core issue: reducing the need of extracting virgin raw materials. This article analyses some of the driving forces and inhibitors of secondary stock extraction to explore why it’s so difficult establishlarge scale secondary stock extraction although suitable technologies are available. The authors discuss and suggest possible ways forreducing some of the main barriers presented.

    Abstract [en]

Industrial symbiosis (IS) developments have been differentiated as self-organized, facilitated, and planned. This article introduces a tool, Looplocal, which has been built with objectives to support the strategic facilitation of IS. Looplocal is a visualization tool built to assist in 1) Simplifying the identification of regions susceptible to new industrial symbiosis facilitation activities 2) Enabling proactive and targeted marketing of potential exchanges to key actors in specific regions and 3) Assisting facilitators to assess the various strategies and consequential engagement and analysis methodologies suitable for additional IS development in specific regions. The tool compares industrial symbiosis data and estimated regional material and energy flows (on a facility level) to identify potential IS transfer information along with key stakeholder and network data. The authors have performed a proof of concept run of this tool on Sweden. In its early stages of application the method has given results seen as useful for identifying regions susceptible to the investment of symbiosis facilitators' time and resources. The material focus and customization possibilities for the tool show potential for a spectrum of potential facilitators: from waste management companies to national or regional authorities. In conjunction with long term business models, such a tool might be utilized throughout an adaptive chain of facilitation activities and aims.

    Abstract [en]

Research on value pathways for organic wastes has been steadily increasing in recent decades. There have been few considerably broad overview studies of such materials and their valuation potential in the bio-based economy in part because of the vast multitude of materials and processes that can be used to produce energy carriers, chemicals, and materials of value. This article explores how automated data analysis approaches can help in analyzing large bodies of text to distill and present potential value pathways for secondary (waste) bio-based materials. The study employed multiple methods (literature collection, topic modelling, and co-occurrence analysis) on a collection of abstracts from 53,292 academic articles covering technologies, applications, and products (TAPs) for bio-based wastes. The results of both the topic modelling and co-occurrence analysis are presented as online interactive web pages. The topic modelling presented an overview of research clusters related to secondary organic resources, processes, and disciplines. The co-occurrence analysis helped to understand which TAPs are researched in relation to a broad spectrum of organic wastes. Co-occurrences were evaluated using the Normalized Pointwise Mutual Information measure to locate terms which co-occur more frequently than would be expected by chance. Through the use of detailed lists of organic wastes and TAPs, the co-occurrence method mapped out 7118 unique intersections between 473 specific wastes and 228 TAPs. This technique enables us to find seemingly non-obvious valorization pathways such as the re-use of oyster shells as catalysts for bio-diesel production and bioplastic production from brewery waste. While a proof-of-concept, this work points the way for using Big Data to suggest novel pathways for implementing the Circular Economy.

    Abstract [en]

From 2009 until 2011 project BRA (Bygg-och Rivningsavfall i Stockholms Län) “Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste in Stockholm County” was coordinated from the division of Industrial Ecology, KTH. This project was focused on actively improving (from plural perspectives) the cycles of C&D (specifically non-metallic inert) materials in the region. In response to the normative aim and inter-systems complexity, a highly participative action research procedure was adopted. Through processes of network communication, workshops, a course, and an international symposium - a number of issues (such as market development, recycled product quality, greenhouse gas impacts, collaborative planning, and statistics) were prioritized, researched, and acted upon. Indicators for measuring progress in selected areas were developed and preliminary action plans created. At a final co-organized symposium Swedish delegates laid the groundwork for the establishment of a Swedish C&D recycling b ranch organization. This initiative of continued collaboration between and within sectors is seen as a vehicle for the priorities and action requirements identified in BRA to be further enabled and held in focus. Furthermore, these actors taking ownership of the process is seen as a success in accordance to the original aims and the need for further cycles of evaluation, planning, and action.

User and Business Value: A Dual-Stakeholder Perspective on IT Systems2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

When discussing the value of an information technology (IT) system, the most common approach is to take on the perspective of either the organization introducing the IT system or the end users. The purpose of this thesis has been to study the values of both stakeholder groups in order to define what system characteristics are the most desirable from a dual-stakeholder point of view.

Through a series of contextual inquiries, interviews and questionnaires, the value perceptions of end users and IT managers at a large European rail operator were investigated. The results of the study point to a high degree of similarity in the value perceptions of end users and IT managers, although the former were generally focused on short-term value while the latter also were concerned about long-term, sustaining value.

The findings are applicable to practitioners wishing to take a dual perspective on IT value as well as academics looking to find touch points between usability and business strategy. In the context of end users and IT managers, the most important system characteristics that maximize value for both stakeholder groups were found to be Availability, Recoverability, Efficiency, Reliability and Future Proofness.
