Ethics and Communication: global Perspectives2016Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

How can ethics be communicated in an age of globalisation? Is it possible to overcome cultural differences and agree on common values and principles that cross cultural borders? How does globalisation challenge ethics and established moral traditions? How are human rights justified in a global context?

This timely collection of essays responds directly to these questions. An international team of contributors pursue issues in ethics, information and communication that include both the classical question of the universality/contextuality of ethics and values, but also new challenges for communication relating to how values and norms are communicated and shared across cultural and political borders. The essays in this book explore theoretical questions of global ethics and ethical universalism, ethics and communication with reference to specific world views and religions, and the challenge of globalisation for ethical communication in particular social arenas

    Abstract [sv]

Global justice and globalisation2016Ingår i: Global ethics for leadership: values and virtues for life / [ed] Christoph Stückelberger, Walter Fust, Obiora Ike, Geneve: Globethics.Net , 2016, s. 81-102Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Globalisation involves both promising potentials and risks. It has the potential – through the spread of human rights, the migration of people and ideas, and the integration of diverse economies - to improve human wellbeing and enhance the protection of human rights worldwide. But globalisation also incurs risks: global environmental risks (such as global warming), the creation of new centres of power with limited legitimacy, a 'race to the bottom' regarding workers' safety and rights, risky journeys of thousands of migrants and not least growing global inequalities. Globalisation, therefore, is a key factor for today's discussions of justice.

As globalisation connects people, it also raises associated responsibilities between them. Until recently, the interest in justice among political philosophers and social ethicists was mainly focused on the nation state. However, this is no longer feasible. Since economic globalisation affects how wealth and power are distributed globally it has become indispensable to discuss social ethics in a global context and to develop principles of global justice. Global justice, therefore, entails an assessment of the benefits and burdens of the structural relations and institutional arrangements that constitute and govern globalisation

The academic discussion of global justice is vibrant and expanding. In my introduction I provide an overview of the discussions on global poverty, justice, cosmopolitanism and statism, migration, the capability approach and different dimensions of global justice.

Global Rectificatory Justice2015 (uppl. 1)Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Recent events have proved that colonialism has left indelible prints in history. In 2013, the British Foreign Secretary apologized and promised compensation for the atrocities in Kenyan detention camps in the 1950s and the same year the heads of governments of the Caribbean Community issued a declaration demanding reparation for the genocide of indigenous populations and for slavery and the slave trade during colonialism The discussion and literature on global justice has mainly focused on distributive justice. What are the implications of colonialism for a theory of global justice today? What does rectificatory justice mean in the light of colonialism? What does global rectificatory justice require in practice? In seeking to answer these questions, the author fills a significant gap in the literature on global justice.

Principles and approaches in ethics assessment: Research integrity2015Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Scientific research is a conscious and systematic approach to acquire knowledge, based on theories, methods and standards that have been developed through the history of scientific disciplines. The terms “research integrity” and “good research practice” refer to ideals for how research ought to be performed.

In the 1940s the American sociologist Robert Merton proposed norms for scientific research that have influenced the discussion on research integrity since then. According to Merton good research should not be secret or anyone’s property but requires instead openness and publicity. Merton uses the term communism/communalism for this norm. The second norm, according to Merton, is universalism, which means that the only relevant criteria for assessing research are the scientific criteria. The position or characteristic of the researcher has no relevance. Thirdly, disinterestedness means that the main motive driving the researcher should be the quest for knowledge, not for example economic gain or fame. Finally, the researcher should always be open for questioning the result. Merton calls this “organized scepticism”. This norm coheres with Karl Popper’s famous demarcation line between research and other activities; falsification, i.e. the constant efforts to falsify one’s result in order to get closer to the truth. Merton’s norms for research are summarized in the acronym CUDOS. Although the exact meaning and implication of Merton’s criteria can be discussed, they imply an ideal for scientific work and deviations from this ideal can be seen as misconduct in research.

Merton’s CUDOS norms are well - known examples of ideals and norms for science. These norms could be seen as the basis for professional ethics of researchers. Scientific misconduct and fraud are deviation from the ideals of science and good research practice. In the following we first conceptualise the area of scientific misconduct. Then we present some norms, guidelines and codes of scientific integrity. In the next section we

argue that scientific misconduct is a real problem that must be taken seriously by the research community and finally we discuss how scientific misconduct is investigated, how common it is and how it can be explained.

Proceedings from The 49th Societas Ethica Annual Conference 2012, Theme: Ethics and Migration, August 23–26, 2012, Lucian Blaga University Sibiu, Romania2012Proceedings (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

August 23-26 2012 Societas Ethica, the European Society for Research in Ethics held its 49th annual conference. The conference theme was “Ethics and Migration” and the setting the Romanian city Sibiu in Transylvania. The site for the conference mirrored the theme. Transylvania has during the centuries been a place for waves of migration, for example, already in the 12th Century it received many German immigrants. It is also today a home for hundreds of thousands of Roma people.

Migration is so far a neglected issue within applied ethics. This is surprising due to both the seriousness of the issue and the ethical dilemmas it poses. With this conference the Societas Ethica, wished to bolster the ethical discussion on migration. The conference channels illustrated the range of ethical issues that migration raises:

Many people migrate from poverty and oppression but are stopped at the borders of the rich nations in Europe and America; what are their obligations towards the migrants? How is migration related to global justice?

Migrants and refugees are vulnerable. They have lost their communities and citizenships. What are the rights of migrants and refugees? Who is obliged to protect their rights?

Fortress Europe has unfortunately become a reality. With surveillance, fences and barbwire Europe tries to keep the migrants at a distance. But, what are the moral obligations of the individual European nations and of the European Union? What do we owe them?

Immigrants who have successfully entered Europe are often met with hostility and end up in segregated communities. What are the ethical challenges of segregation and conflicts based on religion and ethnicity?

The unknown person, the different, the Other, is often despised and persecuted. European history shows ample of evidence of this fact. How should minorities, like for example the Roma people, be respected and included by the majority populations and by the states?

The first key note speech was held by Dr Gernot Haupt, Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt over the theme “Antigypsism and migration”. Haupt showed with plenty of examples how the Roma people in Europe have been victims of constant policies of exclusion; from repression to extermination culminating in the Holocaust in the 1930s and 1940s. Haupt expressed critique of the present attitude of the majority in societies with Roma minorities. Their message is; it is always they, the Roma, who must change, not we!

Dr Matthew Gibney from Oxford University addressed the topic “Refugees and justice between states”. He noticed that presently the majority of the world’s refugees go to neighboring poor countries and hence that the refugee situation exacerbate the global inequalities. How can this change? Are not for example nations responsible for creating massive streams of refugees, like the United States after the attack on Iraq in 2003, obliged to host the resulting refugees?

Dr Michelle Becka from University of Frankfurt am Main talked about “Ethics on the border. Towards a theological horizon in the discourse of migration”. She emphasized that being a stranger is an important theme in the biblical tradition; migrants are in focus for theological ethics. When the humanity of migrants is reduced due to oppression and segregation it is crucial for theological ethics to emphasize the need for solidarity.

In the last keynote speech Dr Oliver Bakewell from Oxford University talked over the theme “The relationships between migration and human development”. His lecture focused on the potential positive effects of migration for development through Diasporas communities with links to their homelands, remittances, i.e. the financial support that immigrants send back to their home countries, etc.

More than 40 participants, among them many young scholars from all over Europe but also from India, the United States, Hong Kong and Australia, presented high quality paper. As the only European society open for scholars in moral philosophy, theological ethics and applied ethics, Societas Ethica has a great potential to influence and stimulate the ethical discussions in Europe.

Rectification for Atrocities under Colonialism2016Ingår i: Interventions: International Journal of Postcolonial Studies, ISSN 1369-801X, E-ISSN 1469-929X, Vol. 18, nr 6, s. 852-864Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Wars and injustices can have wide-ranging reverberations. Colonialism ended – with a few exceptions – over fifty years ago, but there are still many traces left. In this essay I focus on two cases of atrocities under colonialism that have left scars in the present and my question is: how can a nation rectify for the long-term effects of an aggression? What is the appropriate ethical response? The two examples are the German genocide of the Herero tribe in 1904–1905 and the British war against the Mau Mau movement in Kenya in the 1950s. The examples are chosen because they both illustrate enduring claims for rectification after aggressions. After the presentation of these cases and of how Germany and Great Britain have responded, I discuss the meaning of rectificatory justice and criteria for reasonable claims for rectification.

    Abstract [en]

The proceedings from the Societas Ethica’s annual conference 2015 looks different than previous years. We do not publish the full papers this year. The reason for this change is that less and less papers have been submitted the last years due to the fact that most academic journals are hesitant to publish articles that already have been published in conference proceedings. So, in order to be able to mirror the conferences, the board of Societas Ethica decided that it is better that the conference proceedings contain the paper abstracts.

The proceedings contain three parts; first, the thematic introduction by the President, then the key note speeches and the responses to the key notes and finally, the conference paper abstracts.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we consider a few actual cases of mnemonic strategies among older subjects (older than 65). The cases are taken from an ethnographic study, examining how elderly adults cope with cognitive decline. We believe that these cases illustrate that the process of remembering in many cases involve a complex distributed web of processes involving both internal or intracranial and external sources. Our cases illustrate that the nature of distributed remembering is shaped by and subordinated to the dynamic characteristics of the on-going activity and to our minds suggest that research on memory and distributed cognition should focus on the process of remembering through detailed descriptions and analysis of naturally occurring situations.

Two ways of grounding the discussion on extended cognition2011Ingår i: Expanding the Space of Cognitive Science: Proceedings of the 33rd Annual Meeting of theCognitive Science Society / [ed] Laura Carlson, Christoph Hoelscher, Thomas F. Abstract [en]

We question two of the basic foundations of the Extended Mind hypothesis originally formulated by Clark and Chalmers, i.e. that all cognition is organism centered and that the important theoretical issues that the debate surrounding the Extended Mind hypothesis can fruitfully be resolved by to a large extent rely on invented examples of cognitive activities as the empirical foundation. We suggest that one way to proceed is to frame the hypothesis within the larger theoretical framework of activity theory, and another is to conduct extensive field studies of extended cognitive processes. We illustrate our position with examples of how these can be used to reformulate some of the aspects of the Extended Mind hypothesis.

    Abstract [en]

This article is an outline of a critically oriented and empirically grounded theory of the weight order, as a complement to theories of more widely recognized and studied ordering systems. We 1) expose the weight orders "absent presence" in humanistic and social science-oriented research treating overweight and fatness as a personal or social problem, 2) outline the contours and characteristics of this specific ordering system, and 3) suggest a set of sensitizing concepts for analysis of this ordering system. Two primary forms of activity, maintaining order and putting in order, are analysed. The first is making thin people into order and overweight people into disorder, and thus maintains order in the weight order. The other, putting in order, covers different activities supposed to make sure that people keep their bodies thin or try to become thin. These ordering activities meet resistance when overweight people stop dieting and/or define overweight as a personal choice and themselves as good enough, or even healthy and beautiful. We call these forms of resistance alternative weight-doings.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to interpret two stories of creation and compare them to each other with focus on the gender perspective. The interpretation is generally limited to the creation of mankind and how women are represented in each particular story.  The stories I’m interpreting is the story of creation from the Holy Bible, the so called genesis, and from The Nag Hammadi Library’s story of creation called On the origin of the world. I want to show the difference between these two stories when it comes to the women’s position and in what level she is described. I will go through different parts of these two stories and compare the gender language, and try to find a pattern on how femaleness is expressed in The Holy Bible and in On the origin of the world.

Gustav Vasa i skolböcker: En fallbaserad moralfilosofisk analys av historiebruk i skolböcker2014Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    A voice of her own? Echos own echo2015Ingår i: Continental philosophy review, ISSN 1387-2842, E-ISSN 1573-0611, Vol. 48, nr 1, s. 59-75Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article approaches Ovids story of Echo and Narcissus in the Metamorphoses through some of Maurice Merleau-Pontys writings on expression and speech. Echos speech as portrayed by Ovid clearly illustrates how Merleau-Ponty describes speech in Phenomenology of Perception as a "paradoxical operation" through which we use words with already given sense and in that very process both stabilize and alter established meaning. Instead of reducing Echo to a moment of the identity and fate of Narcissus, I bring out Echos own voice and the expression of her subjectivity through creative repetition. The short dialogue between Echo and Narcissus makes manifest that Echos words cannot be reduced to a simple repetition of a clear and distinct original. Rather, her speech emerges in relation to an original that is only made present as an original of a repetition in that very repetition. Echos voice is disruption of the words she repeats and each repetition is also its own origin. Echos own voice is only made present when we listen to it as something other than a simple repetition of the voice of Narcissus. The fragments she returns through her echo, lose their fragmented character through modifying and altering their already given meaning. What Echo lacks is not primarily a voice of her own but rather an unbound origin which by itself remains mute and thereby runs the risk of not expressing anything at all. Echo is repetition but it is precisely as repetition that she is also originating speech.

    Abstract [en]

Conceptions of autonomy in western philosophy and ethics have often centred on self-governance and self-determination. However, a growing bulk of literature also questions such conceptions, including the understanding of the autonomous self as a self-governing independent individual that chooses, acts, and lives in accordance with her or his own values, norms, or sense of sell This article contributes to the critical interrogation of selfhood, autonomy, and autonomous decision making by combining a feminist focus on relational dimensions of selfhood and autonomy with phenomenological philosophy of the embodied self as being-in-the-world. It offers a philosophical investigation of different dimensions of bodily relational autonomy by turning to phenomenological accounts of the lived body as self-reflexive. When so doing, we hope to contribute to bridging the gap that sometimes exists between discussions of autonomy in analytic moral philosophy and of freedom and facticity in phenomenological philosophy. We see this gap as unfortunate, and hold that a nuanced understanding of autonomy and autonomous decision making can be reached if these strands of philosophy are brought into dialogue.

Bortom verklighetens utmarker: Symbolismens teori och metafysik ur ett svenskt perspektiv2015Ingår i: Konstvetaren 2014, s. 20-35Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The article deals with the phenomenon of spiritual warfare and deliverance from demons in a dispensationalist church Cornerstone in San Antonio, Texas. The article is based upon fieldwork at the church 2012-2014. The main focus of the article deals with an event called encounter weekend that the church organizes several times a year and have as its purpose to heal people from traumatic events in their life. The consequence of traumatic events results in something called “the wound” that is regarded as a gateway for demons to enter a person’s life. The climax of the weekend is a deliverance from the demons that is interpreted to effect a person’s life negatively. The article argues that in looking at the ideas of the demonic a form of social critique is revealed and the practice of spiritual warfare and deliverance must be seen in the context of images that they are part of a larger cultural war that is between the forces of God against the forces of Satan.

    Abstract [en]

The article deals with the history of Maulana Karenga and his creation of the Black Nationalist philosophy Kawaida and the organization US. The US organization was founded in 1965 and is part of the Black Power movement. Based upon the idea that the liberation of black people could not occur before a cultural awakening had taken place, US focused on the need to create a connection to Africa in cultural and religious matters. Kawaida, created for this purpose, evolved to include both ethical and religious teachings that rejected Islam and Christianity – particularly the idea of submission to a higher God. US also developed a highly hierarchical structure, with Karenga as its leader, and rituals to reinforce their beliefs. These beliefs included apocalyptic visions of a coming civil war that would in the end only amount to conflicts with other black nationalists. While small in numbers, the influence of the US organization has been significant, given its role e.g. in the creation of Kwanzaa, and in the emergence of Afrocentricity.

    Abstract [sv]

The Scythe and the Pentagram: Santa Muerte from Folk Catholicism to Occultism2017Ingår i: Religions, ISSN 2077-1444, E-ISSN 2077-1444, Vol. 8, nr 1, artikel-id 1Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Santa Muerte is establishing a presence among practitioners of contemporary occultism in Europe and North America. The occult milieu is highly different from the Mexican cult of Santa Muerte, having a strong heritage of secrecy and tradition as social capital and being mostly middle-class in orientation. Nonetheless, this Catholic folk saint with a mostly pragmatic, popular, and grassroots cult is becoming increasingly popular among occultists. Based on a survey of three recent books on Santa Muerte geared towards an Anglophone, occult audience, it is therefore the aim of this article to understand how and why the Skeleton Saint is attracting adherents in the occult milieu, by analyzing the underlying causes of this growing trend, as well as the conditions shaping it. It is the overall argument of this article that the beginning reception of Santa Muerte in occultism is a result of perceived needs and demands specific to the occult milieu rather than characteristics inherent in the symbol itself, and that an analysis of the ways in which she is spreading outside of her original sociocultural context must be guided by an understanding of the novel one she is integrated in.

Religionsfriheten i Sverige 1809 – 1951: Från samvetsfri kristen tro till fritt val av religiös tillhörighet i svensk lagstiftning2013Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In 1809 the citizens of Sweden where given the freedom to practice their Christian faith through the Swedish constitution of 1809, 16 §. This proclaimed that there should be religious freedom in Sweden, albeit restricted to Evangelical-Lutheran faith. Although after the law regarding dissenters was passed in 1860 by choosing another church than the Evangelical-Lutheran church you lost some civic rights, for example you could not become a public official. The freedom to choose religious affiliation was given through the Law of Religious Freedom in 1951. The purpose of this study is to evaluate in what way the concept of religious freedom has developed in Swedish law between 1809 and 1951.

In the background I treat two historical events and one era, with focus upon religious freedom, which have in my opinion influenced the view of religious freedom in Sweden during the chosen period of 1809–1951. These are the Constitution of the United States, the Enlightenment Era in Sweden and also the Universal Declaration of the Human Rights as given by the United Nations.

In the section about the Constitution of the United States a description of its religious freedom and how it is interpreted is given. This is done since, according to my understanding, the Constitution had great impact on an international level and therefore probably influenced Swedish law during the 19th century.

The section about the Enlightenment Era in Sweden gives a description of the influence upon Swedish religion from enlightenment philosophy, which can be summarized in the efforts of king Gustav III to achieve religious freedom and also the increased influence of the so called “religious enlightenment movement” (a term used by Carl Arvid Hessler) in Swedish politics and legislation.

I have included the UN:s Universal Declaration of the Human Rights because I assume it has influenced the Law of Religious Freedom 1951. Since Sweden was one of the nations which signed the declaration it was necessary to reflect this in Swedish law.

The survey treats the development of religious freedom in Swedish law through the six subjects which conforms to each of the headings. The Law of Burial 1894 is included to exemplify religious freedom in a specific matter.

This study traces the development of the concept of religious freedom in Swedish law, which can be concluded in three expressions: Freedom of having an Evangelical-Lutheran faith which not contradicts the conscience of the individual; Freedom of choice of Christian affiliation among those approved by the state; and also Freedom of decision of which religion to be a member of, if any.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the Swedish missionary association Bible Faithful Friends’ (Bibeltrogna Vänner, BV) ecclesiological development between the years 1911 – 1986 and their relation to the Church of Sweden. This essay’s three main questions are:

    - How did the ecclesiology of BV develop during the years 1911 – 1986, with certain focus on 1967-1986?

    - In what way was this ecclesiology imprinted by

    a) the structure of the missionary association?

    b) and the ecclesiological standpoint of the leader Axel B. Svensson?

As regards the first question, the study shows that BV's ecclesiology, particularly in the years 1967 – 1986, is characterized by a church debate between BV's board and the promoters and founders of the Lutheran Confessional Church (Lutherska Bekännelsekyrkan, LBK). The latter was founded due to what they identified as confessional deviations in the Church of Sweden. Their view of church fellowship was that the invisible and the visible church should be uniform in doctrine, faith and confession. Accordingly, they argued that the lack of church discipline had led the Church of Sweden to deviate from the word of God and the apostles' doctrine. In the 1980’s, a proposal to allow Evangelical Lutheran congregations to form within BV, initiated a theological work by the board. The annual meeting of 1986 resolves not only to permit the emergence of free Evangelical Lutheran congregations within BV, but rather to encourage such a transition. In the second question, this study shows that the varying local church conditions among missionaries in northern Skåne in the 1870’s, resulted in the formation of "Communion fellowships". The historical explanations to the formation of these fellowships vary. However, essential to this study is the explanation given in BV’s internal historiography. This reveals that these fellowships were founded out of a need to receive Holy Communion as they had been excommunicated from the parish church. In other areas, missionaries were welcomed and encouraged by the church; hence Holy Communion was not here an issue. These varying local conditions in the grassroots movement BV contributed most likely to the association's pragmatic position in the church issue. Furthermore, one was united in the focus of mission, both near and abroad. In the third question, the study shows that Axel B. Svensson's ecclesiology had an essential impact on BV's official position in the church issue. Moreover, the absence of his voice after his death in 1967 makes clear that his ecclesiology was considered indicative to both BV and LBK. Both used him as legitimizing their own position but perceived him quite differently. However the dominating position among BV members was to remain within the Church of Sweden by working for spiritual revival in her midst. Being an ecclesiola in ecclesian, and thereby promote revival. At the same time one was open towards a relationship change towards the Church of Sweden if this would be considered necessary. 1986 is the year when one could regard this statement to be put to test: through encouraging the formation of Evangelical Lutheran congregations within BV, the association proves to stay true to its pragmatic ecclesiological standpoint were collaboration on the mission field, home and abroad, is superior to union in church issues.

My analysis of these results comes to the conclusion that BV was once and is still founded in the identity of being "ecclesiola in ecclesia". Therefore, during the 1967 – 1986 debate, this identity is challenged by certain BV members wanting to be ecclesia instead of ecclesiola. The pragmatic ecclesiological standpoint, which has long been practiced in the northern Skåne example, in the work of Axel B. Svensson and in the decision of 1986, was hence the reason to why BV was able to stay true to their particular mission: being ecclesiola in ecclesia.

    Abstract [en]

The chapter outlines how nature and health are employed in the commodification of ritual healing in late modern Sweden. New ritualized practices have developed which are aimed at the modern man. How do these new rituals connect to health and nature and how are tradition, body, mind, place and locality represented within these practices?

    Abstract [en]

The chapter discusses the possibility to bring Victor Turner’s work on liminality and ritual together with Roy Rappaport’s thought-provoking ritual theory and approach the contemporary ecological crises in new ways. Turner’s concept of liminality and his understanding of a liminal passage is employed as a metaphorical vision of re-embedding humanity with Earth processes.

Fyra nyanser av Fika: En intervjustudie2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this article the author highlights the discourseon the ideal home by a close reading of twohistorically important treatises, namely De architecturalibri decem (c. 25 BC) by Vitruvius andDe re aedificatoria (1452) by Leon Battista Alberti.Attention is made to focus on these authors’ideas concerning the design of house and home.Three overarching themes — aesthetic, functionand environmental psychology — crystallise outand are discussed in relation to thoughts propoundedby other theorists, above all in the 19thand 20th centuries. This article, then, is a historicalretrospect and a theoretical discussion, ofpresent-day relevance, concerning the theory ofarchitecture. The discourse on domestic architecturehas centred round both quantifiable and unquantifiablequalities, but Vitruvius’ classic triadof durability, utility and beauty (firmitas, utilitas, venustas) appears fundamental. Other aspects, however, such as the vital interaction betweenman and environment, appear to possess a validitytranscending time and space.
