The aim of this paper is to see if and how an individual subtitler can bring his/her unique ‘voice’ into the timecoded subtitles. Drawing on earlier studies primarily on translation norms and on ‘voice in translation’, the results focus on technical, linguistic and polysemiotic traits of the subtitling product as an expression of ‘voice’. The paper presents the following definition of ‘voice’: the consistent traits as regards linguistic features, time-coding and punctuation – with necessary consideration given to the polysemiotic aspects of the whole film text – that can be analyzed in a given subtitler’s subtitling output, and which cannot be explained by technical/linguistic norms, and/or other people’s traceable influence. The study finds that through these traits, it is indeed possible to trace a subtitler’s ‘voice’.
This chapter discusses preferred responses that are delayed by the initial particle no in Estonian. It demonstrates that the turn-initial time-space may be employed for a display of “making up one’s mind”, either weighing matters outside the conversation or something already discussed in the talk. The paper argues that besides the dichotomous choice between the preferred and the dispreferred answer format, there are individual contingencies to consider in committing to future actions as made relevant in requests, proposals and suggestions. The particle no prefaces preferred second actions that are associated with high contingency for the concerned parties, or are framed as such. Examples of high contingency include receiving a guest, attending a potentially unpleasant meeting, and faking a signature. The no-prefacing pattern is valid across response types, from partial to full repeats and independently formatted responses which reflect other social dimensions of talk-in-interaction, such as independent agency, commitment, and degree of assent/confirmation. By marking a transition from prior resistance to current compliance with a no-preface, the speaker makes salient that she is currently considering whether to proceed to a complying or non-complying answer, as well as indexes a more global transition between these two standpoints. The resulting turn gives an appearance of a carefully considered and therefore socially cohesive response.
This study investigates comments on the physical surroundings while a group of people are shoveling dung in a sheep stable. In this setting, where the auditory space is mostly open for talk, some comments launch a conversational sequence, while others are treated as self-talk. The article discusses how the speakers body posture, speech volume, and gaze, as well as the nature of the referent, contribute to attracting a response. Comments treated as self-talk are typically uttered with low volume, while the speaker is bending forwards with his or her gaze toward the ground. Comments that launch a sequence and achieve a focused interaction are instead spoken out loud, with the speakers body oriented toward the other participants, and deploy the recipients current attention focus. Furthermore, the timing of the comment just before an upcoming activity junction from shoveling to a brief rest increases the chances of a conversational sequence being developed. The data are in Estonian with an English translation.
Based on talk-oriented activities, there seems to be a consensus that turn-taking is organized to minimize gaps between turns. This study looks at a conversational sequence that evolved in a multi-party setting during a joint cleaning of a sheep stable, and analyzes how nextness is accomplished in a nonproblematic manner after extensive silences. It argues that due to the non-cognitive but physically straining nature of the activity in a confined space, chatting is almost constant but response relevance is reduced. It discusses the moral orders of talk and work in this multiactivity setting, where urgency is not an issue, and suggests that data collection for sequence analysis be more attentive to the systematic differences between talk-oriented and other settings.
This article navigates the findings of conversation analysis, interactional linguistics, and related multimodal studies to summarize what we know about the grammar-body interface. It shows how grammar is fitted to sequences and trajectories of embodied activities, as well as deployed interchangeably with bodily displays, resulting in truly multimodal patterns that emerge in real time. These findings problematize both the paradigmatic and syntagmatic structures documented in verbal-only linguistics. They call for a reconceptualization of grammar as an assembly of routinized methods for the organization of vocal conduct, capable of incorporating aspects of participants bodily behavior. Data are in Estonian, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Swedish.
While the cosmopolitan gestures and racial markers in Tender Is the Night have generated thought-provoking readings in Fitzgerald scholarship, the novel's profound exploration of Eurocentrism has been overlooked. This article considers the novel within the frameworks of spatial theory and geo-criticism to uncover its interrogation of Eurocentrism. It argues that Fitzgerald's Europe is part of a relational geography activated by the novel's global network of geographical locales and that it is a made space. Set mainly in Europe, the novel insistently presents a global geography that rests upon the economic transactions that enable the characters' experience and crafting of Europe. It is not some essence of Europe, its historical heritage or cultural hegemony that warrants its position as central, but its function as an amorphous space that has become malleable through economic consumption. The places described are almost exclusively European, but minor characters, slips, and transformations trouble Europe's explicit centrality in the novel. Europe's places lose their singularity with Hollywood replicas superimposed onto existing monuments, but foreign currency is steadily directed at Europe, which means that it retains its status as a central locus. While the novel thus challenges the notion of Europe as center, it nonetheless reiterates much of the Eurocentric argument.
Like most of his contemporaries, the American physician and poet William Carlos Williams regularly wrote criticism on the work of other poets of his generation. Like many modernists, furthermore, he took an interest in science and saw the potential of scientific advances for reconceiving writing in general and poetry in particular. In fact, literary criticism and science are to some degree interrelated in Williamss thinking. This article examines Williamss writing on the work of Gertrude Stein and Marianne Moore and how these two poets are used in formulating his own poetics. Several of Williamss literary works engage with science, but his criticism on Moore and Stein offers particularly interesting insights into his conception of the relationship between science and poetry. This relationship is not one of poetry borrowing from science, but rather one in which poetry emerges as a science in its own right.
This article situates the ESL textbook within current scholarship on intermediality and multimodality and, with poetry as the main focus, considers how the media ecology within the covers of the ESL textbook, as well as that implied outside those covers, e.g. web pages, workbooks, audio files and so on, affects the literary text. This qualitative study of how poetry figures in the Swedish ESL textbook series Wings 7, 8, and 9 analyses the case of Emily Dickinson’s poem “I heard a Fly buzz – when I died,” included in Wings 9, at length to uncover the rich textual web of which a poem in a textbook forms part, as well as the resources it asks learners to mobilize in the emergent event of classroom learning.
The inclusion of poems in ESL textbooks typically requires no editorial interventions in terms of abridgement, which makes this genre useful for considering the implications of the medium on the text itself. Poems in ESL textbooks continuously interact with other texts, themes, images and tasks within the textbook. Thus, the medium of the textbook has a transformative effect on the original literary texts it comprises.
While The Grapes of Wrath highlights specific social and institutional structures that direct the course of action of its main characters, shifting the analysis from structure to agency opens up the novel to new readings. This article considers how Steinbeck's novel problematizes agency and argues that it troubles distinctions between human agency and nonhuman agency. Traditional novels generally rely on the actions of their characters, but in The Grapes of Wrath such action is repeatedly thwarted or fails to lead to the desired outcome. Instead, the characters are acted on through various machines or chains of actors that lead back to a vague and bodiless entity, such as the monster-bank. The novel's emphasis on the tractor, the automobile, the handbill, and the bank provides the basis for my reading, together with more subtle instantiations of material agency as seen in the phonograph, the slot machine, the kerosene, and the sticker displayed on the red truck. Agency has traditionally rested on the notion of free will and intention, but recent theories, such as actor-network-theory, or ANT, highlight material agency and move beyond the subject in favor of networks and distribution of agency. This article uses theories on agency to reread Steinbeck's classic novel, but also attempts to show how Steinbeck's novel can increase our understanding of the concept of agency more broadly.
The Sun Also Rises (1926) and The Garden of Eden (1986) contain a large number of place names, particularly European ones. This essay examines Hemingway's use of place names as a poetic strategy that forms part of an inquiry into the meaning of space and place. While place names appear to be stable referents denoting specific geographical locations, the background of war underscores the arbitrariness involved in borders, place, and location. Hemingway's novels challenge the view of place names as stable referents and demonstrate the crucial role played by artistic representation in the creation of place.
This article examines the thematic and formal materiality of Swedish writer Sam J. Lundwall’s multimodal novel Fängelsestaden (1978). The book is illustrated by Giovanni Battista Piranesi’s Carceri etchings from 1761, but is also inspired by them, which engages the reader as part of a media ecology of text, visual art, and more. The participatory aesthetics is further highlighted by metaleptic elements within the text, as well as the unimportance of humanity compared to the city itself being a major theme. A conclusion is that the novel thematizes materiality at the same time as being an example of the dissolution of the borders between human and animal, mind and body, nature and culture, and, especially, form and content.
This article examines the concept of digital poetry by the German philosopher and cybernetician Max Bense, and operationalizes it in a reading of the Danish novel Azorno (1967) by Inger Christensen. It suggests that Bense’s concept of digital poetry catches a part of the philosophical zeitgeist of the era. It expresses an idea of a doubled sense of reality – a technical reality – propelled by the mediatechnological condition of the early Information Age. This double sense of reality is traceable in Azorno, and the novel is thus read as a work of literature that both is a product of and a reflection upon the changing mediatechnological conditions in the postwar years.
This study investigates interaction during equestrian dressage trainings, focusing on the trainer’s communication with horse and rider. The study is based on interaction analyses of 15 video recorded training sessions, as well as analyses of interviews and field notes. The results reveal a wide variety of non-verbal communication modalities deployed by trainers sharing their practical expertise with the athletes. Equestrian trainers use activity specific onomatopoetic constructions, paralinguistic resources such as rhythm, pace and prosody, as well as a number of embodied resources where they use the space of the riding arena and various communicative configurations of their own body and the co-present bodies of horse and rider to represent the horse, the rider and/or the equipage as a whole.
The study is a part of a larger project about equitation as a communicative and didactic practice, aiming at making the practical, embodied knowledge that riding and equestrian training rests on explicit, thus enabling reflection and discussion among both practitioners and researchers of communication and equestrianism.
This study explores how manners of mediation, and the use of embodiment in interpreter-mediated conversation have an impact on tests of cognitive functioning in a dementia evaluation. By a detailed analysis of video recordings, we show how participants-an occupational therapist, an interpreter, and a patient-use embodied practices to make the tasks of a test of cognitive functioning intelligible, and how participants collaboratively put the instructions of the tasks into practice. We demonstrate that both instructions and instructed actions-and the whole procedure of accomplishing the tasks-are shaped co-operatively by embodied practices of all three participants involved in the test situation. Consequently, the accomplishment of the tasks should be viewed as the outcome of a collaborative achievement of instructed actions, rather than an individual product. The result of the study calls attention to issues concerning interpretations of, and the reliability of interpreter-mediated tests and their bearings for diagnostic procedures in dementia evaluations.
Shifting focus from monolingual to multilingual talk within conversationanalysis has offered new, radically social and post-cognitivist understandingsof bilingualism, especially through the empirical study of language alternation. This chapter presents some central ideas in the literature on language alternationand traces the emergence and development of the organisational approach. Thisprioritises a participant perspective, whereby bilinguals mobilise their linguisticresources to organise their actions in mundane and institutional settings. While languaging rather than the linguistic concept of “language” is advocatedto capture the nature of bilingual talk, extending the analysis to include multimodalaspects of social interaction is put forward as a promising directionfor future inquiry.
"The hand on the paper. On personal archives and the materiality of celebrity". The present article takes its departure in the early 19th century and the growing practice of collecting manuscripts and letters written by famous individuals. While positivist claims have under- scored the rational and scientific nature of archives and archival material, the article focuses on the material and emotional incentives behind such endeavors. Handwritten documents were not only cherished and preserved because of the knowledge they might contain, but also for constituting physical links to historical bodies. They were carriers of the aura of ce- lebrity and mediators of presence. More explicitly such incitements per- vaded the collections of 19th century museums where manuscripts and autographs were often put on display next to portraits, busts, clothes and other kinds of memorabilia. Independently of their substances and contents such objects were invested with biographical significance. Rather than accentuating a history specific to the archive, the article points to the trans-institutional practices through which a cultural heritage dedicated to the commemoration and veneration of national heroes was formed.
In the first years of the twentieth century, numerous attempts were made at powered flight. What is commonly labelled 'the pioneer era' (1900-1914) covers the unsteady beginnings of the motorized airplane as well as its large-scale introduction in warfare and for the transportation of goods and passengers. Initially regarded as a foolish toy for hazardous adventure, the airplane rapidly became a favoured symbol of modernity, and the engineers, pilots, and entrepreneurs involved were celebrated as the heroes of progress. However, the quick change in opinion regarding the use and benefit of airplanes was not only prompted by the technical skill of the inventors or the bravery of the flyers. The aim of this paper is to shed light on the media history of early aviation, including the celebrity pilot as an important means by which aviation was publicly experienced and popularized. Through a case study of the mediatization of the first Swedish aviator, Carl Cederstrom (1867-1918), the article explores the interplay of the press, other kinds of media, and advertising in the introduction of the motorized airplane in Sweden in around 1910. At this time, air shows and competitions were being arranged all over the world. The media coverage was massive, and the aviators were frequently interviewed and celebrated. The press, however, did not only report on the events. By offering prizes and arranging competitions, individual newspapers played an active role in the introduction of powered flight. When the Stockholm Air Show was held in 1910 and 1911, one of the Stockholm dailies, Dagens Nyheter, was among the main organizers. The relation between the air show and the press coverage can be interpreted in terms of a feedback loop: the reporting drew attention to the show; the show became a mass attraction; and the papers reported it even more. At the centre of attention was always the aviator Cederstrom himself, popularly known as 'The Flying Baron'. The status of this persona and the participation of the press, the cinema, and postcard publishers also made the air shows attractive for sponsors such as champagne houses, patent medicine companies, and manufacturers of fire equipment. It was this joint attention that quickly transformed a limited concern into national awareness. When the Swedish armed forces in 1912 sought funding for its first aircraft, the politicians were easily convinced of the benefits of aviation.
