Made in Sweden: En studie av svensk jordbruksproduktions villkor på en konkurrensutsatt marknad2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The situation for Swedish agricultural production today is characterized by an increased competition, particularly after the country joined the European Union. Swedish agricultural production laws guarantee safe, high quality foodstuffs. However, due to these strict laws, Swedish farmers face higher production costs than their competitors. Meanwhile, cheaper imported goods compete freely on the Swedish market. Swedish agricultural production must find new ways to survive in the increasing competition.

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to se if, and if that is the case, how Swedish agricultural production can compete on the Swedish market, maintaining its high quality. The focal point is the Swedish poultry producer, Kronfågel.

Procedure: The empirical material has been collected through contacts with Kronfågel.

Results: The thesis gives Kronfågel concrete guidelines of how to act on the Swedish market concerning positioning, pricing and information.

    Abstract [en]

The latest trend within the air force industry is development of unmanned aerial vehicles. The Swedish defense industry group Saab AB is following this trend by means of the introduction of their unmanned helicopter Skeldar V-150. As part of the further development of this system Saab has plans on introducing a marine version of the system, called Skeldar M. One of the purposes of this version is to enable completely autonomous take-offs and landings from ships. To be able to complete this in a safe manner in harsh conditions the helicopter needs to be secured to the deck before take-off as well as after landing.

The purpose of this thesis has been to develop a concept for keeping Skeldar secured on deck. To establish ideas for these concepts a common method for product development has been used. The method involves acquiring customer needs and from these needs establish a list of demands on the product itself. A set of product concepts are then generated by means of creative thinking and competitor analysis. After that the concepts are compared based on how well they meet the demands put upon them and the best ideas get picked out and further developed.

The concepts developed in this thesis stretch from simple ideas where hook and loop fasteners are used to secure the helicopter to more advanced ones where the helicopter’s position relative to the ship is measured and the system adjust to this position. All in all nine basic ideas were developed and a total of twelve versions on securing systems. In consultation with people involved in the Skeldar project, three of the concepts were chosen for further development, one concept where the helicopter was winched to the deck, a second where hook and loop fasteners were used to secure it and finally one where vacuum grippers keeps Skeldar on deck.

With difficulties of implementing a winch system onboard Skeldar as well as on board the ships taken into account, this solution was dropped. This was primarly due to lack of space and difficulties solving an automatic connection between helicopter and ship. The concepts recommended in this thesis will therefore be one of the systems where hook and loop fasteners or vacuum grippers are used.

A big fish in a small pond -En studie av svenska företags samt EU-kommissionens perspektiv på konkurrens2002Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Power-line corridors as source habitat for butterflies in forest landscapes2016In: Biological Conservation, ISSN 0006-3207, E-ISSN 1873-2917, Vol. 201, p. 320-326Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Modern intensified agriculture has decreased farmland heterogeneity, which has led to strong negative effects on farmland biodiversity. However, partly forested landscapes seem to offer many alternative habitats for open habitat species such as butterflies, since modern forestry and development of infrastructure has created several new environments such as forest road verges and power-line corridors. The aim of the present study was to investigate the importance of power-line corridors (PLCs) as butterfly habitats by testing i) if species richness and abundance of butterflies in PLCs are affected by adjacent habitat composition (i.e. comparisons of PLCs with different adjacent habitats), ii) if PLCs act as source habitat through spill-over of individuals into adjacent forest roads and semi-natural pastures and iii) if species composition differs among the investigated habitat types. To investigate this we censured the butterfly fauna in 23 study landscapes in south-central Sweden. We found support for the hypothesis that PLCs may act as source habitats for butterflies in forest roads and pastures, since species richness and abundance were decreasing with increasing distance to PLC from 0 to 500 m. In addition, the species composition in forest roads and pastures close to and far from PLCs was similar, suggesting that this increase was not due to an increase of PLC specialists in the other two habitats. Thus, we have shown that PLCs in themselves are important butterfly habitats independently of adjacent habitat composition (adjacent mature forest, clear cuts or arable land), and they contribute to increased species richness and abundance of butterflies in surrounding areas over 10 times larger than their own width. Statistical differences in the white matter tracts in subjects with depression by using different skeletonized voxel-wise analysis approaches and DTI fitting procedures2017In: Brain Research, ISSN 0006-8993, E-ISSN 1872-6240, Vol. 1669, p. 131-140Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most significant contributors to the global burden of illness. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a procedure that has been used in several studies to characterize abnormalities in white matter (WM) microstructural integrity in MDD. These studies, however, have provided divergent findings, potentially due to the large variety of methodological alternatives available in conducting DTI research. In order to determine the importance of different approaches to coregistration of DTI-derived metrics to a standard space, we compared results from two different skeletonized voxel-wise analysis approaches: the standard TBBS pipeline and the Advanced Normalization Tools (ANTs) approach incorporating a symmetric image normalization (SyN) algorithm and a group-wise template (ANTs TBSS). We also assessed effects of applying twelve different fitting procedures for the diffusion tensor. For our dataset, lower fractional anisotropy (FA) and axial diffusivity (AD) in depressed subjects compared with healthy controls were found for both methods and for all fitting procedures. No group differences were found for radial and mean diffusivity indices. Importantly, for the AD metric, the normalization methods and fitting procedures showed reliable differences, both in the volume and in the number of significant between-groups difference clusters detected. Additionally, a significant voxel-based correlation, in the left inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, between AD and self-reported stress was found only for one of the normalization procedure (ANTs TBSS). In conclusion, the sensitivity to detect group-level effects on DTI metrics might depend on the DTI normalization and/or tensor fitting procedures used.

Applying a free-water correction to diffusion imaging data uncovers stress-related neural pathology in depression2016In: NeuroImage: Clinical, ISSN 0353-8842, E-ISSN 2213-1582, Vol. 10, p. 336-342Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) holds promise for developing our understanding of white-matter pathology in major depressive disorder (MDD). Variable findings in DTI-based investigations ofMDD, however, have thwarted development of this literature. Effects of extra-cellular free-water on the sensitivity of DTI metrics could account for some of this inconsistency. Here we investigated whether applying a free-water correction algorithm to DTI data could improve the sensitivity to detect clinical effects using DTI metrics. Only after applying this correction, we found: a) significantly decreased fractional anisotropy and axial diffusivity (AD) in the left inferior frontooccipital fasciculus (IFOF) in MDD; and b) increased self-reported stress that significantly correlated with decreased IFOF AD in depression. We estimated and confirmed the robustness of differences observed between free-water corrected and uncorrected approaches using bootstrapping. We conclude that applying a free-water correction to DTI data increases the sensitivity of DTI-based metrics to detect clinical effects in MDD. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc.

Super-Helices for Hair Modeling and Dynamics2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

We present core components of a hair modeling and dynamics solution for the feature film industry. Recent research results in hair simulation are exploited as a dynamics model based on solving the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion for a discretized Cosserat curve is implemented in its entirety. Solutions to the dynamics equations are derived and a framework for symbolic integration is outlined. The resulting system is not unconditionally positive definite but requires balanced physical parameters in order to be solvable using a regular linear solver. Several implementation examples are presented, as well as a novel modeling technique based on non-linear optimization.

Industrial metabolism: The emerging landscape of heavy metal immission in Sweden1992Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Since the turn of this century, technological development has drastically increased the industrial consumption of toxic metals. Once dispersed in the environment, the metals cannot be degraded but will be accumulated in soil or sediment sinks. Thus, environmental effects of heavy metal pollution tend to be permanent.

In this study, methods to reconstruct the flows of heavy metals and estimate the emissions over time are presented. This is done through studies of the development of production, technology, trade and the longevity of metals in the technosphere. This last part in the chain will form the "consumption emissions". Using the concept of industrial metabolism, the total load in soil and sediment has been calculated, i.e. the development of a new "irmnission landscape" could be described/assessed. Here industrial metabolism will be illustrated by the total flow in Sweden of chromium (1920-1980), lead (1880-1980) and cadmium (1940-1990).

Even though the production emissions have decreased during the last decades, the accumulation of cadmium, chromium and lead in soils and sediments will continue due to dissipative consumption losses of various products. Obviously, the anthropogenic contribution is significant, i.e. the "societal weathering rate" exceeds the natural rate. For lead the emissions from various products have been dominant and contributed with much higher release to the environment than weathering processes. For cadmium and chromium the consumption emissions have become dominant in the latest decades. Total amounts used are only 5000 tonnes for cadmium, but two millions of tonnes for both chromium and lead. However, consumption emissions from various uses of chromium and lead are less than 10% of the total amount used (15% for cadmium). The rest of these metals remain in the anthroposphere and constitute a future potential problem.

Urban areas can be regarded as ecological "hot spots" for toxic metals and in some regions e.g. Stockhohn the calculated amount of chromium in soils may be as high as they are in the most polluted industrial regions today, within only a few decades. Thus, the pollution load in soils and sediments has altered from being a "defined pollution problem" within certain industrial regions to a situation where the end-use of products together with the mobility pattern of goods define the pollution problem.

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Autonomous bucket emptying on hauler2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis proposes a method of loading a hauler with an autonomous wheelloader efficiently and with high productivity in the short loading cycle. The mainidea behind the method is to raise the bucket with only the lift until the centerof gravity has reached the height that it will have just as the material will startto fall out of the bucket and on to the hauler. When the center of gravity hasreached that height both lift and tilt will be used simultaneously to keep thecenter of gravity at a constant height. This method is both faster and moreenergy efficient than loading a hauler using only one function at a time.

The method has been successfully implemented and validated by loading ahauler with three buckets with the autonomous wheel loader that is developed byVolvo CE in Eskilstuna.

    Abstract [sv]

Modeling Air Combat with Influence Diagrams2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Air combat is a complex situation, training for it and analysis of possible tactics are time consuming and expensive. In order to circumvent those problems, mathematical models of air combat can be used. This thesis presents air combat as a one-on-one influence diagram game where the influence diagram allows the dynamics of the aircraft, the preferences of the pilots and the uncertainty of decision making in a structural and transparent way to be taken into account. To obtain the players’ game optimal control sequence with respect to their preferences, the influence diagram has to be solved. This is done by truncating the diagram with a moving horizon technique and determining and implementing the optimal controls for a dynamic game which only lasts a few time steps.

The result is a working air combat model, where a player estimates the probability that it resides in any of four possible states. The pilot’s preferences are modeled by utility functions, one for each possible state. In each time step, the players are maximizing the cumulative sum of the utilities for each state which each possible action gives. These are weighted with the corresponding probabilities. The model is demonstrated and evaluated in a few interesting aspects. The presented model offers a way of analyzing air combat tactics and maneuvering as well as a way of making autonomous decisions in for example air combat simulators.

Co-creating possibilities for patients in palliative care to reach vital goals - a multiple case study of home-care nursing encounters2013In: Nursing Inquiry, ISSN 1320-7881, E-ISSN 1440-1800, Vol. 20, no 4, p. 341-351Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The patients home is a common setting for palliative care. This means that we need to understand current palliative care philosophy and how its goals can be realized in home-care nursing encounters (HCNEs) between the nurse, patient and patients relatives. The existing research on this topic describes both a negative and a positive perspective. There has, however, been a reliance on interview and descriptive methods in this context. The aim of this study was to explore planned HCNEs in palliative care. The design was a multiple case study based on observations. The analysis includes a descriptive and an explanation building phase. The results show that planned palliative HCNEs can be described as a process of co-creating possibilities for the patient to reach vital goals through shared knowledge in a warm and caring atmosphere, based on good caring relations. However, in some HCNEs, co-creation did not occur: Wishes and needs were discouraged or made impossible and vital goals were not reached for the patients or their relatives. Further research is needed to understand why. The co-creative process presented in this article can be seen as a concretization of the palliative care ideal of working with a person-centered approach.

The myth of induction in qualitative nursing research2015In: Nursing Philosophy, ISSN 1466-7681, E-ISSN 1466-769X, Vol. 16, no 2, p. 110-120Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In nursing today, it remains unclear what constitutes a good foundation for qualitative scientific inquiry. There is a tendency to define qualitative research as a form of inductive inquiry; deductive practice is seldom discussed, and when it is, this usually occurs in the context of data analysis. We will look at how the terms ‘induction’ and ‘deduction’ are used in qualitative nursing science and by qualitative research theorists, and relate these uses to the traditional definitions of these terms by Popper and other philosophers of science. We will also question the assertion that qualitative research is or should be inductive. The position we defend here is that qualitative research should use deductive methods. We also see a need to understand the difference between the creative process needed to create theory and the justification of a theory. Our position is that misunderstandings regarding the philosophy of science and the role of inductive and deductive logic and science are still harming the development of nursing theory and science. The purpose of this article is to discuss and reflect upon inductive and deductive views of science as well as inductive and deductive analyses in qualitative research. We start by describing inductive and deductive methods andlogic from a philosophy of science perspective, and we examine how the concepts of induction and deduction are often described and used in qualitative methods and nursing research. Finally, we attempt to provide a theoretical perspective that reconciles the misunderstandings regarding induction and deduction. Our conclusion is that openness towards deductive thinking and testing hypotheses is needed in qualitative nursing research. We must also realize that strict induction will not create theory; to generate theory, a creative leap is needed.

Concept analysis and the building blocks of theory: misconceptions regarding theory development.2016In: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 72, no 10, p. 2558-2566Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIM: The purpose of this article is to discuss the attempts to justify concepts analysis as a way to construct theory - a notion often advocated in nursing.

BACKGROUND: The notion that concepts are the building blocks or threads from which theory is constructed is often repeated. It can be found in many articles and well-known textbooks. However, this notion is seldom explained or defended. The notion of concepts as building blocks has also been questioned by several authors. However, most of these authors seem to agree to some degree that concepts are essential components from which theory is built.

    DESIGN: Discussion paper.

DATA SOURCES: Literature was reviewed to synthesize and debate current knowledge.

IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: Our point is that theory is not built by concepts analysis or clarification and we will show that this notion has its basis in some serious misunderstandings. We argue that concept analysis is not a part of sound scientific method and should be abandoned.

CONCLUSION: The current methods of concept analysis in nursing have no foundation in philosophy of science or in language philosophy. The type of concept analysis performed in nursing is not a way to 'construct' theory. Rather, theories are formed by creative endeavour to propose a solution to a scientific and/or practical problem. The bottom line is that the current style and form of concept analysis in nursing should be abandoned in favour of methods in line with modern theory of science.

The theory of a co-creative process in advanced palliative home care nursing encounters: A qualitative deductive approach over time2019In: Nursing Open, E-ISSN 2054-1058, Vol. 6, no 1, p. 175-188Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Aims and objectives

The aim of this study was to test the theoretical conceptualization of the co‐creative process in home care nursing encounters over time.

    Method and design

This was a multiple case study with a deductive analysis of qualitative data over time, using interviews and observations collected from three cases.

    Results

The co‐creative process was complex and contained main, sub‐ and micro‐processes. Time was important and valuable, giving the patient and relatives space to adjust the process to their own pace. Some processes were worked on more intensively in accordance with the patients’ and relatives’ needs, and these are considered the main‐process. The further developed theory of the co‐creative process and its main, sub‐ and microprocesses can be understood as a concretization of how good nursing care can be performed within caring relationships in the context of advanced palliative home care.

    Abstract [sv]

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Ida Infront AB is an IT company whose business is based on case management for both small and large organizations, mainly in the public sector. Ida Infront’s product iipax is a piece of software which manages cases. Users of iipax have a client that handles everything in a case in iipax. There is a growing interest in finding an external way to manage files in iipax. Therefore the purpose of this project is to use WebDAV, which is an extension to the HTTP protocol, to implement and evaluate a way of managing files in iipax remotely. I have created a server to which an external client can connect to browse the iipax structure. The server also makes it possible to open, move and create files within iipax. The conclusion of the project is that the server works satisfactorily and can serve as a basis to extend with greater functionality in the future.

Hedgefonder i finanskrisen: Prestationer, risker och regleringar2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Breakdowns of welded structures are usually a consequence of fatigue loading. Fatigue fractures are commonly initiated in the region close to the weld toe but can also initiate from the weld root and from discontinuities inside the weld. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the weld quality of welded joints produced at Volvo Wheel Loaders factory in Arvika. The goal of the investigation is to give a clearer insight regarding factors influencing the fatigue strength of the welded joints and thereby give a better foundation for fatigue strength calculations.

The investigation is including examination of the weld geometry, weld discontinuities and the effects of shot peening. Mainly three different methods for collecting test data have been used: Plastic replicas cast on the weld profile, weld specimens from a rear frame belonging to a wheel loader of model L110E/120E and Almen testing of the shot peening.

The results showed that it is not possible to control even transition between the weld material and the base material without after treatment. The most frequent reason why the welded joints did not fulfill the demands in the Volvo Corporate Standard was leg deviation outside the acceptable limit. The most frequent weld defect was lack of fusion inside the weld. The occurrence of this defect was overrepresented in butt welds. The results also showed that the fatigue enhancing effects of shot peening are with today’s process just being used to a minor degree.

Ambiguities and challenges in the functions approach to TIS analysis: a critical literature review2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on an approach often used in empirical studies of sustainable transitions: the functions of technological innovation system approach. After its introduction by Johnson and Jacobsson (2001), the functions approach has reached a quite widespread diffusion among innovation scholars, especially those interested in sustainability. However, during this diffusion process, the approach has to some extent been “re-invented” (Rogers, 1983) by its users, and many of the original definitions and assumptions are no longer applied. In order to take stock of the work so far and suggest possible avenues for further research in this field, the purpose of this paper is to identify similarities and differences in how the functions approach is applied by different (groups of) researchers. The paper first gives an overview of the functions literature and then critically reviews it. A clear lack of agreement between researchers is identified with regards to how the concepts of ‘function’ and ‘functionality’ are defined and conceptualised. Based on this analysis, the paper discusses the implications of this lack of agreement and identifies a number of critical choices that have to be made by individual researchers, but possibly also by the ‘functions’ community as a whole, in order to increase the lucidity and applicability of the functions approach to TIS analysis.

Levelling the playing field? The influence of national wind power planning instruments on conflicts of interests in a Swedish county2010In: ENERGY POLICY, ISSN 0301-4215, Vol. 38, no 5, p. 2357-2369Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Slow and complicated wind power planning and permitting procedures have been a large obstacle for wind power diffusion in Sweden and other countries. This paper complements previous siting-oriented literature with a planning perspective on these problems. The focus is two national planning instruments implemented in Sweden in the early 2000s: a national planning target and an appointment of areas of national interest for wind power. The paper identifies different types of conflicts of interest related to wind power - in addition to the conflict between wind power as a national public interest and various local private interests - and analyses the impact of the national planning instruments on the handling of these conflicts in the land-use planning process in the County of Ostergotland. The analysis shows that the planning target actually made local planning officials even more inclined to treat wind power as a private rather than a public interest and that the method used to identify areas of national interest of wind power forced wind power to compete with the combined strengths of all other public interest. The planning instruments thus left wind power to fight an uphill battle rather than to meet other interests face-to-face on a level playing field.

Technological dynamics and policy: how to derive policy prescriptions2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The innovation literature acknowledges that innovation policy should be based on an analysis of underlying innovation system dynamics. Whereas policy prescriptions have been derived from analyses of the functional dynamics of emerging innovation systems in the ‘fluid’ phase of the technology life cycle and for the rejuvenation of path-dependent, mature innovation systems associated with a ‘specific’ phase of technology development, the role of policy in the “transitional” phase remains unclear. Through a discussion about the challenges associated with specific functions of a technological innovation system in the transitional phase, this paper identifies a number of potential system weaknesses specifically associated with this phase, for example demand-side path dependency, lack of informational increasing returns to adoption, imbalanced development of components and complementary technologies, lack of financial, physical and human resources and various forms of delegitimation. It also suggests that policy intervention might be justified to remedy these weaknesses, since many of them are out of reach of system actors. Other weaknesses can take too long time for system actors to handle, if a technological transformation is urgent from a societal perspective. Removing obstacles for mass market formation and stimulating system coordination should be a priority for policy aimed at the transitional phase. This would require policy to play the part as an innovation intermediary within the innovation system rather than as an external supplier of pushes and pulls.

Policy for environmental innovation: a comparative review of empirical evidence from two sectors2012In: Innovation and Competitiveness: Dynamics of Organizations, Industries, Systems and Regions, 2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1960s, governments have sought to encourage technological development to reduce pollution. These efforts now include global greenhouse emissions, especially in sectors such as transport and energy generation. A variety of means are applied: general taxes and trading systems, subsidies and technology-forcing standards. At the macro-level, economists argue that general economic instruments are a more efficient way to regulate emissions than administrative or technology-specific measures. The effectiveness of general economic instruments needs to be examined in relation to their innovation impact in different (sub-) sectors, however. This paper builds on research in the automotive and energy sectors to compare general and specific, economic and administrative, means in terms of their impact on different types of innovation. The review shows that the effectiveness of policy instruments is conditioned by the type of innovation needed (incremental, modular, architectural or radical) and the responding industrial context. General instruments – economic and administrative – encourage development and diffusion of incremental and modular innovation, whereas technology-specific instruments are needed to support the development and diffusion of architectural and radical low-carbon innovations. However, in order to have an effect, instruments have to be connected to a responding industrial context, i.e. networks of firms with requisite resources and capabilities to deploy. Key challenges for policy makers when choosing instruments include issues of selection, stringency, scale and stability.

    Abstract [en]

This paper addresses the issue of R&D internationalisation of two multinationals in the electro-technical industry (GE and ABB), by means of a patent data analysis. The overwhelming majority of both companies R&D activities are concentrated in Western Europé and North America. The locational overlap between the two firms' activities is small. These results are consistent with findings from earlier studies that (1) there is little evidence to suggest that the 'production' of technology is globalised in a general sense and (2)that tapping knowledge from an industry's global lead location plays a very limited role in foreign R&D investments.

The impact of environmental policy instruments on innovation: A review of energy and automotive industry studies2014In: Ecological Economics, ISSN 0921-8009, E-ISSN 1873-6106, Vol. 106, p. 112-123Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Various types of policy instruments have been implemented to reduce local and global emissions, but the impact on innovation of different instruments has received less attention. This paper reviews empirical studies of the innovation impact of four main types of policy instruments in two high-emitting sectors. The conclusions are threefold. (1) Policy plays a key role for the development and diffusion of environmental innovation in the studied sectors. (2) Different types of instruments promote different types of innovations: general economic instruments has primarily encouraged incremental innovation, general regulatory instruments has enforced improvements based on modular innovation, and technology-specific instruments appears to have been needed to support the development and deployment of radically new technologies. (3) All types of policy instruments face challenges in design and implementation: understanding the selection impact of the chosen instruments, implementing increasing stringency levels, committing to an appropriate scale, and safeguarding policy stability.
