How common are long-lasting, intensely itching vaccination granulomas and contact allergy to aluminium induced by currently used pediatric vaccines? A prospective cohort study2014In: European Journal of Pediatrics, ISSN 0340-6199, E-ISSN 1432-1076, Vol. 173, no 10, p. 1297-1307Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The frequency of long-lasting, intensely itching subcutaneous nodules at the injection site for aluminium (Al)-adsorbed vaccines (vaccination granulomas) was investigated in a prospective cohort study comprising 4,758 children who received either a diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-polio-Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine (Infanrix®, Pentavac®) alone or concomitant with a pneumococcal conjugate (Prevenar). Both vaccines were adsorbed to an Al adjuvant. Altogether 38 children (0.83 %) with itching granulomas were identified, epicutaneously tested for Al sensitisation and followed yearly. Contact allergy to Al was verified in 85 %. The median duration of symptoms was 22 months in those hitherto recovered. The frequency of granulomas induced by Infanrix® was >0.66 % and by Prevenar >0.35 %. The risk for granulomas increased from 0.63 to 1.18 % when a second Al-adsorbed vaccine was added to the schedule. Conclusion: Long-lasting itching vaccination granulomas are poorly understood but more frequent than previously known after infant vaccination with commonly used diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis-polio-Haemophilus influenzae type b and pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. The risk increases with the number of vaccines given. Most children with itching granulomas become contact allergic to aluminium. Itching vaccination granulomas are benign but may be troublesome and should be recognised early in primary health care to avoid unnecessary investigations, anxiety and mistrust.

Patch testing children with aluminium chloride hexahydrate in petrolatum: A review and a recommendation2019In: Contact Dermatitis, ISSN 0105-1873, E-ISSN 1600-0536, Vol. 81, no 2, p. 81-88Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: According to studies on adults, patch testing with aluminium chloride hexahydrate 2% pet. is insufficient to detect aluminium allergy, and a 10% preparation is recommended. Other studies suggest that a 2% preparation is sufficient for testing children. Objectives: To review three previously published Swedish studies on patch testing children with aluminium chloride hexahydrate 2% pet. Patients/Methods: Altogether, 601 children with persistent itching subcutaneous nodules (granulomas) induced by aluminium-adsorbed vaccines were patch tested with aluminium chloride hexahydrate 2% pet. and metallic aluminium in (a) a pertussis vaccine trial, (b) clinical practice, and (ca) prospective study. Results: Overall, 459 children had positive reactions to the 2% pet. preparation. Another 10 reacted positively only to metallic aluminium. An extreme positive reaction (+++) was seen in 65% of children aged 1 to 2 years as compared with 22% of children aged 7 years. From 8 years onwards, extreme positive reactions were scarce. Conclusions: Aluminium chloride hexahydrate 2% pet. is sufficient to trace aluminium allergy in children. Small children are at risk of extreme reactions. We thus suggest that aluminium chloride hexahydrate 10% pet. should not be used routinely in children before the age of 7 to 8 years.

A child with a long-standing, intensely itching subcutaneous nodule on a thigh: an uncommon (?) reaction to commonly used vaccines2013In: BMJ Case Reports, ISSN 1757-790XArticle in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A 2-year-old girl presented with an intensely itching subcutaneous nodule on the front of a thigh. The nodule persisted for 10 months until it was excised. Subsequent investigation for malignancy and systemic disease showed no pathological findings. The diagnosis, persistent itching vaccination granuloma, was revealed by hazard almost 2 years after the onset of symptoms. Persistent itching subcutaneous nodules at the injection site for aluminium containing vaccines (mostly diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis combination vaccines for primary immunisation of infants) may appear with a long delay after the vaccination (months), cause prolonged itching (years) and are often associated with contact allergy to aluminium. The condition is poorly recognised in Health Care which may lead to prolonged symptoms and unnecessary investigations.

Sixty-four children with persistent itching nodules and contact allergy to aluminium after vaccination with aluminium-adsorbed vaccines-prognosis and outcome after booster vaccination2013In: European Journal of Pediatrics, ISSN 0340-6199, E-ISSN 1432-1076, Vol. 172, no 2, p. 171-177Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Persistent itching subcutaneous nodules and aluminium (Al) allergy have been described after vaccination with Al-adsorbed vaccines but are considered rare. Little is known about the prognosis. Sixty-four children with itching nodules following vaccination with diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) vaccines currently used in Sweden (Infanrix® and Pentavac®) were spontaneously reported to the authors from 1999 and followed for up to 12 years. The median duration of itching was 5 years in the 44 children who were free or almost free from symptoms at the latest follow-up. Typical findings were a long interval between vaccination and onset of symptoms (months or years) and intensified itching during intercurrent infections. Contact allergy to aluminium was demonstrated in 60/63 children (95 %). Neither the incidence nor differences between the two vaccines can be estimated from this study, but vaccine-induced itching nodules are probably more common than hitherto realised. The median interval between onset of symptoms and diagnosis was 8 months in a region where nurses were educated to recognise the condition compared to 2 years in other regions. Booster vaccination with DTP-polio was postponed or declined by 15/40 families in fear for new problems. Out of 25 children who received a booster dose, only two had new itching nodules. Conclusion: Intensely itching subcutaneous nodules (vaccination granulomas) and contact allergy to aluminium may occur after primary vaccination with the two most commonly used DTP vaccines in Europe. The condition is probably underreported. Symptoms may last for at least 4-5 years but eventually seem to subside.

    Abstract [sv]

Phenological changes within a growth season in two semi-natural pastures in southern Sweden2004In: Annales Botanici Fennici, ISSN 0003-3847, E-ISSN 1797-2442, Vol. 41, no 1, p. 15-25Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Phenological changes within a growth season were investigated in two grazed, semi-natural grasslands in southern Sweden. On four occasions during the growth season, two independent observers recorded plant frequency and percentage cover. The vegetation data sets were analysed with ordination methods. The temporal changes were highly significant, but accounted for only a small part of the total variation in the data. Most species had early maxima, regarding both cover and frequency. There were differences in temporal pattern between the two grasslands. In a xeric area, the vegetation underwent a major change sometime in August, between survey-visit three and four. In a mesic area, the vegetation changed throughout the study period but least so during August. Therefore, phenological changes can be manifested in different ways, even within the same geographic region. Species-wise ordination scores highlighted those species whose records might be most affected by phenological patterns, information which is valuable when evaluating data collected in Scandinavian grasslands.

Temporal variation in carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of aquatic biota in two contrasting boreal streams2013In: Fundamental and Applied Limnology, ISSN 1863-9135, Vol. 182, no 3, p. 205-218Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Natural abundant isotopes of carbon and nitrogen are frequently used to elucidate food webs and trace energy flows in aquatic ecosystems. Seasonal events such as leaf fall and algal blooms can influence temporal patterns and hence also affect interpretations of isotope data. This study examined such patterns in two contrasting streams in Sweden: Vadsbacken, which is heavily impacted by agriculture and has high nitrogen levels, and Pinnarpsbacken, which has a primarily forested catchment and lower nitrogen levels. Different organic compartments (e.g., detritus, biofilm, and invertebrates) were sampled in September, November, April, and June. Effects of sampling date on isotope signatures of leaf litter (delta N-15: p = 0.0001, delta C-13: p = 0.03), seston (delta N-15: p = 0.001, delta C-13: p = 0.001), FPOM (delta N-15: p = 0.03, delta C-13: p = 0.003), wood (delta C-13: p = 0.05) and invertebrates (delta N-15: p = 0.04) were found. However, there were site-specific temporal patterns in isotope signatures, probably reflecting disparate origins of allochthonous material related to the differences in catchment land use. Mixing models revealed no changes in resource partitioning that could be attributed to the above-mentioned seasonal events. The site-specific patterns recorded here indicate that generalisation regarding ecosystems with different perturbations should be done with caution.

The Tarland Catchment Initiative and Its Effect on Stream Water Quality and Macroinvertebrate Indices2012In: Journal of Environmental Quality, ISSN 0047-2425, E-ISSN 1537-2537, Vol. 41, no 2, p. 314-321Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Tarland Catchment Initiative is a partnership venture between researchers, land managers, regulators, and the local community. Its aims are to improve water quality, promote biodiversity, and increase awareness of catchment management. In this study, the effects of buffer strip installations and remediation of a large septic tank effluent were appraised by water physico-chemistry (suspended solids, NO3, NH4, soluble reactive P) and stream macroinvertebrate indices used by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency. It was done during before and after interventions over an 8-yr period using a paired catchment approach. Because macroinvertebrate indices were previously shown to respond negatively to suspended solid concentrations in the study area, the installation of buffer strips along the headwaters was expected to improve macroinvertebrate scores. Although water quality (soluble reactive P, NH4) improved downstream of the septic tank effluent after remediation, there was no detectable change in macroinvertebrate scores. Buffer strip installations in the headwaters had no measurable effects (beyond possible weak trends) on water quality or macroinvertebrate scores. Either the buffer strips have so far been ineffective or ineffectiveness of assessment methods and sampling frequency and time lags in recovery prevent us detecting reliable effects. To explain and appreciate these constraints on measuring stream recovery, continuous capacity building with land managers and other stakeholders is essential; otherwise, the feasibility of undertaking sufficient management interventions is likely to be compromised and projects deemed unsuccessful.

Trade-offs between fungal and bacterial respiration along gradients in temperature, nutrients and substrata: Experiments with stream derived microbial communities2012In: Fungal ecology, ISSN 1754-5048, E-ISSN 1878-0083, Vol. 5, no 1, p. 46-52Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We examined the effects of temperature, nutrients and substrata on microbial respiration rates. Leaves of alder and oak were incubated in a natural stream. Leaf discs were incubated in antibiotics to manipulate the ratio of fungi to bacteria with three treatments: antifungal, antibacterial, and combined antifungal and antibacterial treatment in addition to controls. Discs were subsequently incubated in different nutrient set-ups and temperature regimes. Significant effects of temperature, nutrients, microbial treatment and leaf type on respiration rates were found. However, temperature did not significantly add to the effect of eutrophication on microbial respiration rates. A stronger effect of temperature on fungal mediated respiration than on bacterial mediated respiration was found. In streams where leaf litter constitutes the main energy source, fungi constitute the dominant microbial decomposer. Our results indicate that increased temperature due to global warming might have serious implications for ecosystem functioning when leaf litter constitutes the main energy source.

Effects of nutrient enrichment on C and N stable isotope ratios of invertebrates, fish and their food resources in boreal streams2009In: Hydrobiologia, ISSN 0018-8158, E-ISSN 1573-5117, Vol. 628, p. 67-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes are frequently used to study energy sources and food web structure in ecosystems, and more recently, to study the effects of anthropogenic stress on aquatic ecosystems. We investigated the effect of nutrient enrichment on  d13C and d15N in fine (FPOM), coarse (CPOM) particulate organic matter, periphyton, invertebrates and fish in nine boreal streams in south-central Sweden. In addition, we analysed the diet of benthic consumers using stable isotope data. Increases in d15N of periphyton (R2 = 0.88), CPOM (0.78), invertebrates (0.92) and fish (0.89) were related to nutrient enrichment. In contrast, d13C signatures did not change along the nutrient gradient. Our results show that d15N has potential as a sensitive indicator of nutrient enrichment in boreal streams. Carbon and nitrogen isotopes failed to elucidate putative diets of selected aquatic consumers. Indeed, comparison of low- and high-impact sites showed that d13C of many consumers were found outside the ranges of basal resource d13C. Moreover, ranges of basal resource d13C and d15N overlapped at both low and high sites, making discrimination between the importance of allochthonous and autochthonous production difficult. Our findings show that a fractionation rate of 3.4% is not always be appropriate to assess trophic interactions, suggesting that more studies are needed on fractionation rates along gradients of impairment.

Leaf-litter-associated fungi and bacteria along temporal and environmental gradients in boreal streams2014In: Aquatic Microbial Ecology, ISSN 0948-3055, E-ISSN 1616-1564, Vol. 73, no 3, p. 225-234Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aquatic fungi and bacteria have long been recognized as key drivers in ecosystem processes such as leaf litter decomposition. We examined fungal and bacterial communities on decaying alder Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertner leaves along a gradient of increasing agricultural land use and associated nutrient enrichment in 9 boreal streams during 4 separate seasons (fall 2003, spring 2005, fall 2005, and spring 2006). Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and quantitative polymerase chain reactions (qPCR) showed that agricultural land use had significant effects on both bacterial and fungal communities, and on the ratios of fungi to total microbes associated with decomposing leaf litter. Furthermore, landscape factors and fluvial geomorphology appeared to influence the community composition of fungi and bacteria. Seasonal effects were found for fungal community structure only, indicating a higher temperature sensitivity of fungi compared to bacteria.

    Abstract [sv]

Varumärkeshantering vid fusioner2000Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Identifying and analyzing digital payment flows regarding illegal purposes on the Internet: I samarbete med CGI och Finanskoalitionen2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to illustrate an unexplored illegal exploitation of legal businesses, with the purpose of limiting this market and especially the related transactions. The issue of transactions regarding illegal material executed with credit cards was solved through involving the companies who issues the credit cards, making the market more transparent and thus preventing this kind of transactions. The thesis will illustrate how cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, are being exploited regarding illegal transactions and more specifically, transactions regarding selling and purchasing Child Abusive Material within file hosting services (cyberlockers). The analyzed data was gathered using a webcrawler and different methods for analyzing correlation were implemented on the data to find relationships between different data points. The data points were then clustered, using an algorithm to create a relationship network. The developed model analyzed the data to identify trends and patterns regarding the illegal transactions and the results can be used to find the most prominent users who are potential perpetrators that actively distributes illegal material. A deeper analysis is then performed on the, according to the model, most interesting users in an attempt to identify their underlying identity.

When cryptocurrencies are used by perpetrators to pay and get paid for illegal material, the transaction flows cannot immediately be connected to specific identities and therefore it is required to first identify potential perpetrators and track their transactions, to later compare them with the transactions that has already been identified as payments for illegal material. Apart from this model, a framework has been created to identify certain patterns and trends regarding the cyberlockers’ transaction flows. This was performed through analysis of the transaction flows connected to cyberlockers that were suspected to contain Child Abusive Material or other illegal material.

With the results from the first and second model, the most interesting cyberlockers for future investigations were discovered, according to the trends and patterns in their surrounding transaction flows. When that analysis was performed and the first model was implemented, potential perpetrators was identified through collaborations between the investigating unit, the Police, the cyberlockers in question and the relevant exchange services. Through this collaboration the identities of the perpetrators are revealed and the transaction flows can then be analyzed to limit further distribution of Child Abusive Material within cyberlockers and consequently limit the illegal transactions with cryptocurrencies.

Keywords: Bitcoin, Child Abusive Material, Cyberlockers, Illegal payments, Cryptocurrency, Webcrawler, Correlation, Relationship network.

Global dreams - local teams: rhetoric and realitites of transnational innovation2004In: International Journal of Innovation Management, ISSN 1363-9196, E-ISSN 1757-5877, Vol. 8, no No. 2, p. 115-145Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article challenges of transnational innovation and global project teams as imperatives for modern management of innovation. Proceeding from an account of the localised dynamics of a radical technology innovation project in the early 1970s, the article reviews the strategy theorists of the 1990s, who proclaimed the virtues of cross-border innovation processes. Their expectations of international synergies and world-wide learning are confronted with the realities and local harvesting in a transatlantic innovation project at a European multinational. An account follows of a radical innovation project at the firm, which was the scene of the introductory study. Now, 25 years later this industrial technology company had become part of a far-flung multinational, which according to popular management theorists was the model of international innovation. The case account highlights the surprising similarities between the two projects, and the sustained importance of intensive local interaction oand commitment in uncertain innovation projects.

    Abstract [en]

A merger wave on an unprecedented scale has recently been sweeping through the Western world. Many studies have demonstrated the unimpressive economic outcome of most mergers. This article argues that an important reason for disappointing long-term performance is the underestimated difficulties of integrating idiosyncratic technologies in unified product platforms. Instead of focusing on new product development, engineers and designers are drawn into lengthy harmonisation issues. An expanded research agenda is proposed, including the role of special interests in driving merger proposals, the impact of mergers on engineering creativity and innovation, and the identification of industries in which firm trajectories of scale and size, ultimately ending in mergers can be compared with the alternative dynamics of de-mergers, knowledge-based networks and research-based start-ups. © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Abstract [en]

In innovation and project management studies incremental development projects are perceived as theoreticlly and organisationallyuninteresting. By means of a longitudinal study of product improvement projects at an automobile firm, this paper challenges such views andshows how the cumulative impact of the studied sequence resulted in a competitive repositioning of the company's product portfolio during afinancially difficult period. Project managers achieved this by transcending the separation between exploration and exploitation projects; they notonly adhered to time, cost and quality goals but also tried out new ways of testing and experimenting with controversial technical ideas. The paperanalyzes the intensive inter project learning that generated these ambidextrous capabilities and emphasizes that practices at the project-level need tobe buttressed by expanded management learning and capability development also at the sequence level.

Vetenskaplig publicering: historik, praktik och etik2016 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Individual integrators - a key factor for knowledge and innovation in technology-based firms2010Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recently the role of individuals in knowledge formation and innovation has been rediscovered by several authors. This paper builds on a study of extra inventive individuals, defined by their high patenting activity, in large technology-based firms to explore the importance of individual inventive activity also for firms in mature industries; to investigate the horizontal practices of these individuals and the role of collaboration; to understand how these horizontal practices permeate vertical innovation structures; and to extend the evolutionary framework on knowledge generation and innovation by adding knowledge integration as a key process, and distinguishing different types of knowledge retention.

    Abstract [en]

In this chapter, we argue that knowledge integration is not just an organizational- and team-level practice but concerns the everyday activities of inventive engineers and researchers involved in development activities. The chapter investigates and illustrates how inventive individuals in non-managerial positions contribute to innovation and knowledge integration. The focus is on inventors who generate ideas and scan new knowledge fields to complement deep knowledge in their own domains in order to turn ideas into new solutions. The chapter illustrates the practices of those innovative individuals, such as combining knowledge across different fields, pursuing individual exploration as well as collaborative search, and participating in formal projects but simultaneously using them as permeable entities to further their own innovative ideas. In this way, the chapter contributes to an understanding of the micro-level of knowledge integration activities in technology-based firms.

    Abstract [en]

Since the early 1990s outsourcing has been a major industrial trend. In the literature the economic advantages of outsourcing are often taken for granted. This article aims to take a detailed look at actual outcomes in terms of costs and competences. The focus is on outsourcing of manufacturing in the telecom equipment industry. The article builds on a comparative study of two leading firms, Ericsson (global leader in digital networks) and Nokia (world leader in cellular phone). The comparison reveals strikingly different strategies for production and outsourcing, which lends support for a critical rethinking of general outsourcing trends.

    Abstract [en]

For a long time, the telecom equipment industry has been at the forefront of outsourcing and relocating production operations to contract manufacturing firms located in Asia and Eastern Europe. Recently, however, leading firms have begun to revise this strategy, based on their recognition of the continual importance of technological leadership and integration capabilities. Using a case study of a key company, this paper explores the dynamics of outsourcing and production strategies in the telecom equipment industry. One of the central aspects under study is the interaction of product development with industrialisation and production. The paper analyses issues such as component standardisation versus differentiation and technological integration, the value of deep integration capabilities for cost reductions, and why production competence and the rapid industrialisation of products incorporating new technologies have acquired renewed importance, despite the global trend towards lowest-cost locations. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract [en]

Technology-based firms continue to compete primarily on innovation, and are continuously required to present new solutions to an exacting market. Abstract [en]

Technology-based firms continue to compete primarily on innovation, and one continuously required to present new solutions to an exacting market. As technological complexity and specialization intensifies, firms increasingly need to integrate and coordinate knowledge by means of project groups, diversified organizations, inter-organizational partnerships, and strategic alliances. Innovation processes have progressively become interdisciplinary, collaborative, inter-organizational, and international, and a firm's ability to synthesize knowledge across disciplines, organizations, and geographical locations has a major influence on its viability and success.

This book demonstrates how knowledge integration is crucial in facilitating innovation within modern firms. This book provides original, detailed empirical studies of prerequisites, mechanisms, and outcomes of knowledge integration processes on several organizational levels, from key individuals, projects, and internal organizations, to collaboration between firms. It stresses the need to understand knowledge integration as a multi-level phenomenon, which requires a broad repertoire of organizational and technical means. It further clarifies the need for strong internal capabilities for exploiting external knowledge, reveals how costs of knowledge integration affect outcomes and strategic decisions, and discusses the managerial implications of fostering knowledge integration, providing practical guidance and support for managers of knowledge integration in high technology enterprises.
