Införandet av NVDB i kommunerna - en fallstudie av Kiruna2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This case study of the Swedish national road database (NVDB) and local road database (LVDB) from the municipal viewpoint describes the advantages and disadvantages of joining NVDB. The possible profits and costs that can be deduced with a contract to the NVDB are also studied in this thesis. An applied method of how an inventory and a revision of local traffic regulations with adaptation to NVDB is made in this thesis.

The basic thought of NVDB is that it is a database with information of all the roads in Sweden. The stored information in this database is mainly the geographic placement and the characteristics of the road. Examples of road characteristics are: road name, width, speed restrictions, obstacles in height and more. The database is constructed by links and nodes that are connected together in a road network. Turn restrictions are built in the links and with that it makes the database more intelligent.

An inventory and revision of the local traffic regulations to match the new traffic decree has to be done before the end of 2005. But there is no requirement from the national road administration that the municipalities have to adapt their local traffic regulations to the NVDB. But it is highly recommended to do that since there is no extra time needed to do an adaptation to the NVDB when the inventory and revision is made.

The benefits of joining NVDB are great for smaller municipalities. The benefit of having a complete intelligent database compensates the costs and resources that is needed to introduce the database to the municipality. Large costs can be saved by having a good overview of the road network. For example by decreasing the payouts in operational subsidies and lower the costs for school transports. To be emphasized is that NVDB creates a need to itself; new territories of use can be discovered after the municipality has joined NVDB. Needs in the future that doesn’t exist today will possibly be filled by the database.

LVDB is a relatively untested NVDB application. Only Stockholms and Gothenbourgs municipalities use a LVDB today. The thought with the application is to connect purpose data of the road network with other data, for example electric lines and the placement of wells in a structured way. The disadvantage today with a LVDB is that it is designed for larger municipalities. For that reason the advice for smaller municipalities is to wait until a more suitable application can be investigated. That kind of application will be developed in a near future.

On Knots and DNA2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Knot theory is the mathematical study of knots. In this thesis we study knots and one of its applications in DNA. Knot theory sits in the mathematical field of topology and naturally this is where the work begins. Topological concepts such as topological spaces, homeomorphisms, and homology are considered. Thereafter knot theory, and in particular, knot theoretical invariants are examined, aiming to provide insights into why it is difficult to answer the question "How can we tell knots appart?". In knot theory invariants such as the bracket polynomial, the Jones polynomial and tricolorability are considered as well as other helpful results like Seifert surfaces. Lastly knot theory is applied to DNA, where it will shed light on how certain enzymes interact with the genome.

    Abstract [sv]

    Jag vill studera om dessa tidstypiska idéer uttrycks i Folkskolans barntidning och i så fall på vilket sätt. Kan det vara så att tidningen var något mer än ”god nöjesläsning”? Vad hade redaktionen för åsikter och föreställningar? Vad ville man egentligen uppnå med sitt material? För att se ifall tidningen var ett verktyg i uppfostringsprocessen har jag formulerat följande frågeställningar;

    • Hur skilde tidningen på skötsamma och ouppfostrade barn?
    • Hur skulle barnen uppfostras till hälsa och hygien?
    • På vilket sätt handlade förnuftiga vuxna?
    • Hur användes historien som normerande?

Evaluation of the Turbo-decoder Coprocessor on a TMS320C64x Digital Signal Processor2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

One technique that is used to reduce the errors brought upon signals, when transmitted over noisy channels, is error control coding. One type of such coding, which has a good performance, is turbo coding. In some of the TMS320C64xTM digital signal processors there is a built in coprocessor that performs turbo decoding.

This thesis is performed on the account of Communication Developments, within Saab AB and presents an evaluation of this coprocessor. The evaluation deals with both the memory consumption as well as the data rate. The result is also compared to an implementation of turbo coding that does not use the coprocessor.

Alternatives to the use of unequal voting rights: a propos the potential threat to their effectiveness as a takeover defense2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: The origin of this study was the negotiations around a EU takeover directive, aimed at making the market for corporate control more open. One of the proposals was to neutralise shares carrying multiple rights in takeover situations when a potential acquirer obtains 75% of the total share capital. For many Swedish ownership groups, this would mean that the system of unequal voting rights, constituting an important defense to their control, would decrease in effectiveness. In the middle of writing this thesis, an EU agreement was finally reached, making the proposal voluntary to adopt. The imminent threat posed to the Swedish system faded, but has though not disappeared since the present rules anew will be brought under inspection in five years.

Purpose: To give examples on potential tactics to adopt if unequal voting rights would risk to become neutralised in takeover situations, these tactics dependent on two different scenarios: (1) Present Swedish ownership structure is considered advantageous for the country and thus to be remained or (2) A more open market for takeovers is desired. Course of action: Interviews have been conducted with parties within Swedish trade and industry, partly in order to assess the value and necessity of the content of this thesis.

Conclusion: The threat of an abolition of the unequal voting rights is not perceived as imminent by parties within Swedish trade and industry and few alternative resistance strategies are suggested. If current Swedish ownership structure is to be remained, the author proposes competition-reducing defenses, if a more open market for takeovers is aimed for, auction-inducing resistance strategies. The choice of how to proceed should depend on how afraid the Swedish Government and Swedish companies are of a change in present ownership structure.

Värdet av företagsrating2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Increasingly, companies choose to finance their business with corporate bonds which has resulted in an increased demand on credit ratings. As such the rating agencies have a very important role in the financial markets. Examining the value of a credit-rating can be very interesting for both issuer and investor.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to identify and define the value of rating.

Execution: The study is built upon nine interviews with rated and non-rated firms and investors.

Result: The most important value of rating is the greater access to the corporate- and CP market. This infers that additional capital can be issued, in comparison to that available from bank loans, however, not necessarily at a lower rate. Consequently, the rate is not the driving factor concerning the choice of buying a rating. Rating has great effect on the pricing of bonds and CP’s, which is a result of the reliance investors have on the rating agencies. Rating affects the investment decision directly through the investment mandates, and indirectly through the effect on the individual investment decision.

    Abstract [sv]

Erythropoietin therapy and cancer related anaemia: updated Swedish recommendations2007In: Medical Oncology, ISSN 1357-0560, E-ISSN 1559-131X, Vol. 24, no 3, p. 267-272Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Due to concerns related to treatment with erythropoietin (EPO) and possible negative effects on tumour control, a workshop was organised by the Medical Products Agency of Sweden with the aim to revise national treatment guidelines if needed. In patients with solid tumours, conflicting results have been reported with respect to tumour control and survival. Until further notice it is therefore recommended that EPO should be used restrictively in the treatment of patients with cancer and that the anticipated improvement in quality of life should be evaluated against potential risks.

Welfare in zoo kept felids: A study of resource usage2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Due to a large number of felid species being endangered they are subjects of conservation projects both in situ and ex situ. Keeping felids in zoos are problematic with stereotypic behaviours such as pacing and reproduction difficulties often occurring. The aim of this study was to review research and zoo husbandry knowledge about which resources are most important for the welfare of zoo kept felids, and in addition perform behavioural observations in seven felid species in four Swedish zoos to try to find an order of priority of resources. Observations were performed during opening hours in 36 sessions per species and zoo. The results showed that studies of felid resource usage are missing. Zoo husbandry practice is probably based mainly on traditions and anecdotal knowledge. The observations showed that except for minor differences felids behave similarly regardless of species but the use of resources varies. Small felid species seems to be hiding rather than pacing as a way of coping. Elevated resources and areas as well as numerous hiding places are important to felids but many factors might affect the choice of resting places. Therefore it is important to provide the felids with multiple choices. It is also important to evaluate both species and individuals when designing enclosures and providing resources. More multi-institutional studies with large number of individuals of all zoo kept felid species are needed to gather knowledge about felids needs and preferences of resources.

Weighting and valuation in selected environmental systems analysis tools - suggestions for further developments2011In: Journal of Cleaner Production, ISSN 0959-6526, E-ISSN 1879-1786, Vol. 19, no 2-3, p. 145-156Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In environmental systems analysis tools like Life Cycle Assessment, strategic environmental assessment, cost–benefit analysis and environmental management systems, results need to be presented in a comprehensible way to make alternatives easily comparable. One way of doing this is to aggregate results to a manageable set by using weighting methods. In this paper, we explore how weighting methods are used in some selected Environmental Systems Analysis Tools (ESATs), and suggest possible developments of their use. We examine the differences in current use patterns, discuss the reasons for and implications of such differences, and investigate whether observed differences in use are necessary. The result of our survey shows that weighting and valuation is broadly used in the examined ESATs. The use of weighting/valuation methods is different in different tools, but these differences are not always related to the application; rather, they are related to traditions and views on valuation and weighting. Also, although the requirements on the weights/values may differ between tools, there are intersections where they coincide. Monetary weights, using either endpoint or midpoint methods, are found to be useful in all the selected tools. Furthermore, the inventory shows that that there is a common need for generic sets of weights. There is a need for further research focusing on the development of consistent value sets derived with a wide range of methods. In parallel to the development of weighting methods it is important with critical evaluations of the weighting sets with regard to scientific quality, consistency and data gaps.

A Swedish consensus on the surgical treatment of concomitant atrial fibrillation2012In: Scandinavian Cardiovascular Journal, ISSN 1401-7431, E-ISSN 1651-2006, Vol. 46, no 4, p. 212-218Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia among patients scheduled for open heart surgery and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. According to international guidelines, symptomatic and selected asymptomatic patients should be offered concomitant surgical AF ablation in conjunction with valvular or coronary surgery. The gold standard in AF surgery is the Cox Maze III ("cut-and-sew") procedure, with surgical incisions in both atria according to a specified pattern, in order to prevent AF reentry circuits from developing. Over 90% of patients treated with the Cox Maze III procedure are free of AF after 1 year. Recent developments in ablation technology have introduced several energy sources capable of creating nonconducting atrial wall lesions. In addition, simplified lesion patterns have been suggested, but results with these techniques have been unsatisfactory. There is a clear need for standardization in AF surgery. The Swedish Arrhythmia Surgery Group, represented by surgeons from all Swedish units for cardiothoracic surgery, has therefore reached a consensus on surgical treatment of concomitant AF. This consensus emphasizes adherence to the lesion pattern in the Cox Maze III procedure and the use of biatrial lesions in nonparoxysmal AF.

BryggaHem – Development of an E-commerce Web Application with a Usability Focus2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is part of a bachelor’s project conducted at Linköping University and addresses the development of an e-commerce web application with a usability focus. A market survey was conducted as part of the project to establish the orientation of the web application. Furthermore, the Scrum methodology is described and analyzed, and the team’s experiences of the project are documented. Research relevant to designing an application with high usability is detailed. Additionally the thesis addresses the tools and frameworks used during the development of the application, as well as ethical aspects of handling user information and selling products related to home-brewing of alcoholic beverages. The conclusion drawn from the project regarding the methodology is that Scrum is a viable methodology for this type of development work, although it requires small teams as well as previous experience of Scrum to yield high efficiency. The conclusion drawn from the project regarding usability is that it is achieved through a combination of variables that to a large extent is based on users’ distinct perceptions of the given application.

The Feeling of Migration: Narratives of Queer Intimacies and Partner Migration2016Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation analyzes narratives of queer partner migration, that is, a family-tie migration in which one of the partners of a relationship has migrated in order for the partners to be together, and where the partners queer the migration in the sense that they have a non-normative sexuality and/or gender identity. The purpose of the study is to examine how queer partner migrants and their Swedish partners experience the migration process – which continues also once the administrative process has been completed – by analyzing the emotions and feelings that emerge in the process. The study is a contribution to research on privileged migration as well as intimate migration.

The focus is the queer partner migration relationship, and what emotions and feelings ‘do’ to this relationship, but also how emotions and feelings structure the migration process. The study analyzes the work three different emotions – love, loss, and belonging – do in these migration processes, and how this work is described in the participant narratives. Migrant participants have migrated from different parts of the world (Africa, Europe, Latin America, and North America), making it possible to analyze what emotions and feelings do in this particular migration process from the point of view of nationality and, in particular, proximity to ‘Western-ness,’ race, and language as well as how privileges connected to these positions come to matter in the process.

The dissertation is an ethnographic interview study in which both migrants and Swedish partners have been interviewed. The interview material consists of a combination of couple interviews and individual interviews.

By using affect theories and the concept of queer phenomenology, the dissertation shows how the work that emotions and feelings do in migration processes is connected to gender identity, sexual identity, race and whiteness, nationality, perceived proximity to Western-ness, class, language, and the migration narrative the migrating partner is (or is not) written into by way of the country they have migrated from. This is analyzed in relation to the theoretical frameworks of entanglement, homonationalism, and intimate citizenship.

The analysis shows that emotions and feelings structure the migration process for both more privileged and less privileged migrants, but in different ways. The understanding of who ‘is’ a migrant, and the preparedness for the feelings that arise in a migration process, are tied to the positions mentioned above and the privileges these positions give, or do not give, the migrant access to. By focusing on emotions and feelings and what these do, the study also illustrates how the migration process affects the non-migrating partner as this partner engages in emotional labour to ‘make’ the migrating partner ‘Swedish.’ Through their the migrating partner, the non-migrating partner is also aligned in a way that makes them a little bit less ‘Swedish,’ contributing to the non-migrating partner being ‘stopped’ in ways they have usually not experienced before. The study further shows how migration processes produces inequality, and the difficulties that arise when the couples try to live up to the Swedish ideal of the equal relationship.

The interviews are analyzed as narratives, and both narratives and storytelling are important throughout the dissertation, not only as the method used in the analysis but as the form of the dissertation, making it a kind of super structure organizing the writing. Writing (how to write accessibly and interesting) and reading (how to write in order to invite an open and active reading) are important aspects of the dissertation.

    Abstract [en]

Around 1980 some important decisions were made regarding the Swedish comprehensive school, which in various ways influenced teachers' work. The school was to be divided into smaller units, so-called work-units. A work-unit was to contain two or more classes of students. As a consequence of this new organisation the teachers were to co-operate in a so called teacher-team, that was responsible for all activities in a work-unit.

The aim of this thesis is to study teachers' work as regards their participation in and conceptions of collegial co-operation. Focus is on describing and analysing the meeting between external demands on teacher co-operation and the traditional freedom of the teaching profession to plan and carry through teaching individually.

Four teacher-teams were studied during one year by means of participating observations of their planned conferences. Three teachers from each team were then interviewed about their views on and conceptions of work in teacher-team and of their tasks as teachers. All teachers in the four teams were also asked to keep a diary for one week where all collegial meetings were noted.

The results indicate that when imposed collegial co-operation was introduced in the school it led to teacher collaboration being distributed into two separate arenas: conference co-operation (the formal arena) and other types of co-operation with colleagues (the informal arena). All teachers use the formal arena to introduce discussions about student welfare. otherwise they are moderately interested in the work in this arena. In the informal arena some teachers act as initiators of ontent, closely related to well-known interests among teachers; instruction and student welfare.

Teachers express a need for collegial co-operation and they take the opportunity under certain circumstances.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

One aim of this project was to integrate research orientation and professional relevance in teacher education, in relation to educational theory, thesis writing and future work. Another aim was to develop models for group-supervision to let students participate in discussions about their work, which was expected to promote student influence and development of analytic thinking. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire before the students started working on their thesis. Supervisors’ notes from group supervision were collected after their series of meetings.

The students claim that the thesis gives them new knowledge and skills which are important in their profession. It has also improved the overall quality of their education. The thesis work, as well as group supervision, when students’ needs are considered, facilitates student influence.

    Abstract [sv]

Många studenter går kortare kurser i ämnet.

OP0209-HPR Less Pain and Activity Limitations in Today's Early RA Patients Compared with Patients Diagnosed 10 Years Earlier (The Swedish Tira-Project)2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Over the last decades the RA-treatment strategies have changed considerably. Routines for early RA diagnosis and instituted disease modifying anti rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) have been established. In the early 2000s biologic agents also became available for treatment purposes. Despite these altered and improved strategies RA patients continue to report pain and activity limitations; women more so than men. Objectives: To study differences regarding pain and activity limitations during the first three years after diagnosis of RA in today's patients compared with patients diagnosed 10 years earlier from a gender perspective. Methods: This study was based on patients recruited to the project “early interventions in RA” (TIRA). In the first cohort (TIRA-1) 320 patients were included during 1996-1998. In the second cohort (TIRA-2) 463 patients were included during 2006-2008. Disease activity score 28 joint count (DAS-28) and medication were registered. Pain intensity (VAS), bodily pain (BP) in Short Form36 (SF-36) and activity limitation (Health Assessment Questionnaire, HAQ) were reported at inclusion and at follow-ups after one, two and three years. Results: Disease activity did not differ between cohorts at inclusion, but was significant lower at the follow ups in the TIRA-2 cohort compared with the TIRA-1 cohort. Patients in TIRA2 were prescribed traditional DMARD:s and biologic agents more frequent than in TIRA-1. The TIRA-2 patients reported significantly higher pain intensity and activity limitations at inclusion but lower pain intensity and activity limitations at all follow-ups than TIRA-1 patients. There were no significant differences between cohorts regarding bodily pain at inclusion, but thereafter the TIRA-2 patients showed significant lower bodily pain than the TIRA-1 patients. Men reported lower activity limitation than women in TIRA-1; otherwise there were no gender differences in TIRA-1. In TIRA-2, there were no significant gender differences regarding pain at inclusion. However, men reported lower pain than women at all follow-ups. Women, in turn, reported significantly higher activity limitations at all time points in TIRA-2. Pain and activity limitations were significantly reduced from inclusion to the one year follow-up but remained stable thereafter. Conclusions: Both women and men in today's early RA patient cohort report lower pain and less activity limitations at the follow ups after diagnosis of RA compared to 10 years earlier. However, both activity limitations and bodily pain are still pronounced.Disclosure of Interest: None declared

Pain and activity limitations in women and men with contemporary treated early RA compared to 10 years ago: the Swedish TIRA project2015In: Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology, ISSN 0300-9742, E-ISSN 1502-7732, Vol. 44, no 4, p. 259-264Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: To study differences regarding pain and activity limitations during the 3 years following diagnosis in women and men with contemporary treated early RA compared with their counterparts who were diagnosed 10 years earlier. Method: This study was based on patients recruited to the Early Intervention in RA (TIRA) project. In the first cohort (TIRA-1) 320 patients were included in time for diagnosis during 1996-1998 and 463 patients were included in the second cohort (TIRA-2) during 2006-2009. Disease activity, pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale, VAS), bodily pain (BP) in the 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), activity limitations (Health Assessment Questionnaire, HAQ), and medication were reported at inclusion and at follow-up after 1, 2, and 3 years. Results: Disease activity, pain, and activity limitations were pronounced at inclusion across both genders and in both cohorts, with some improvement observed during the first year after diagnosis. Disease activity did not differ between cohorts at inclusion but was significantly lower at the follow-ups in the TIRA-2 cohort, in which the patients were prescribed traditional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biological agents more frequently. In TIRA-2, patients reported significantly lower pain and activity limitations at all follow-ups, with men reporting lower pain than women. Women reported significantly higher activity limitations at all time points in TIRA-2. Conclusions: Pain and activity limitations were still pronounced in the contemporary treated early RA cohort compared with their counterparts diagnosed 10 years earlier and both of these factors need to be addressed in clinical settings.

    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe experiences of pain and its relationship to daily activities in people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Method: Seven semi-structured focus group discussions were conducted with 33 men and women of different ages with RA. Data were analysed with content analysis. Results: Pain affected everyday life and may be a barrier to perform valued activities. Regarding the impact of pain on participation and independence, personal factors and the social environment were found to be important. It could be a struggle to find the right activity balance, since it was easy to be overactive, triggering subsequent elevation of pain levels. However, the participants also described activities as a mediator of pain and a distraction from it. Conclusion: The relationship between pain and daily activities in RA was complex. Pain as an impairment was expressed to be related to activity limitations and participation restrictions, as well as to contextual factors. These findings highlight the clinical importance of paying attention to the complexity of pain and its relation to daily activities and participation.

    Abstract [sv]

Sammanlagt 33 patienter, 7 män och26 kvinnor, deltog i sju fokusgrupper. Pain and difficulties performing valued life activities in women and men with rheumatoid arthritis2015In: Clinical Rheumatology, ISSN 0770-3198, E-ISSN 1434-9949, Vol. 34, no 8, p. 1353-1362Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to examine the difficulties with performing valued life activities in relation to pain intensity in women and men with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In total, 737 persons with RA (73 % women) from three rheumatology units in Sweden responded to a questionnaire measuring performance of 33 valued life activities and self-rated pain. The relationships between performance of valued life activities (VLAs) and pain (measured by visual analogue scale (VAS)) were analysed based on gender. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted with the total VLA score as dependent variable. Women reported more pain and difficulties in performing valued life activities than men. Across genders, 85 % reported at least one valued life activity affected by RA. Significantly more women than men encountered difficulties in performing some activities such as cooking, gardening and meeting new people. Women reported higher pain intensity (35 mm) than men (31 mm). Almost all 33 difficulty ratings for valued life activities were higher among persons with high pain (greater than 40 mm) than persons with lower pain. Difficulty ratings for valued life activities correlated positively with pain in persons with lower pain, but not among those with high pain. The results highlight the importance of addressing pain, especially among women with RA, as they reported pain to impact on their valued life activities. Interestingly, this was evident also in women with lower levels of pain.

Self-efficacy and pain acceptance as mediators of the relationship between pain and performance of valued life activities in women and men with rheumatoid arthritis2017In: Clinical Rehabilitation, ISSN 0269-2155, E-ISSN 1477-0873, Vol. 31, no 6, p. 824-834Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVE: To study whether personal factors (self-efficacy and pain acceptance) mediate the relationship between pain and performance of valued life activities in persons with rheumatoid arthritis.

METHODS: Persons with rheumatoid arthritis for at least four years (n = 737; 73% women) answered a questionnaire measuring self-efficacy, pain acceptance, performance of valued life activities, and self-rated pain. Relationships among these constructs were explored using univariate and multivariate analyses. Structural equation modelling was then used to examine the mediational role of personal factors on the relationship between pain and performance of valued life activities.

RESULTS: A direct negative association between pain and performance of valued life activities was identified (Beta = .34, P < .001). This suggests that people with rheumatoid arthritis who had higher levels of pain has increased difficulties in performing valued life activities. Self-efficacy and activity engagement component of pain acceptance mediated the relationship between pain and performance of valued life activities, however the pain willingness component of pain acceptance did not influence participation in valued life activities.

CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the importance of considering personal factors, such as pain acceptance and self-efficacy, in facilitating participation in valued life activities.

"De famlar i mörkret"...: en studie om bedömning inom den praktiska kunskapstraditionen.2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]
