    Abstract [en]

    We present experimental studies of crossings of spin-split one-dimensional subbands in ballistic quantum wires in an in-plane magnetic field B ?. At low electron densities, a spontaneous spin-splitting occurs as subbands cross, which gives rise to additional non-quantised conductance structures called 0.7 analogues. We analyse the data within a spin-density-functional model, which includes exchange interactions in a magnetic field. Focussing on the region of the crossings of spin-split subbands, it is found that the energy levels rearrange as they cross due to exchange interactions. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Abstract [en]

    We report photo- and electroluminescence from an alternating conjugated polymer consisting of fluorene units and low-band gap donor-acceptor-donor (D–A–D) units. The D–A–D segment includes two electron-donating thiophene rings combined with a thiadiazolo-quinoxaline unit, which is electron withdrawing to its nature. The resulting polymer is conjugated and has a band gap of 1.27 eV. The corresponding electro- and photoluminescence spectra both peak at approximately 1 μm. Light-emitting diodes, based on a single layer of the polymer, demonstrated external quantum efficiencies from 0.03% to 0.05%.

    Abstract [en]

    A millimeter-wave radio test-bed is implemented which demonstrates 16QAM transmission over 70/80 GHz band for data rate up to 10 Gbps. Performance of the 16QAM transmitter and receiver is evaluated in a loop-back lab set-up. With the proposed 10 Gbps on single carrier system architecture, it is possible to achieve 40 Gbps over a 5 GHz bandwidth when combined with polarization and spatial multiplexing.

    Abstract [en]

    Problem solving is at the heart of the mechanics curriculum, and developing problem solving skills is an important learning objective in basic and advanced mechanics courses at the undergraduate level. In alignment with this tradition, written examinations are mainly designed to test problem solving capabilities. Despite the fact that students spend most of their mechanics studies solving mechanics problems, an alarming fraction of them fail the written examination. One possible explanation is that a problem solving infrastructure, e.g. answers to problems and opportunities for collaboration with fellow students, is provided during the study period of courses, but missing during the examination.

    3He was a popular material in neutrons detectors until its availability dropped drastically in 2008. The development of techniques based on alternative convertors is now of high priority for neutron research institutes. Thin films of 10B or 10B4C have been used in gas proportional counters to detect neutrons, but until now, only for small or medium sensitive area. We present here the multi-grid design, introduced at the ILL and developed in collaboration with ESS for LAN (large area neutron) detectors. Typically thirty 10B4C films of 1 μm thickness are used to convert neutrons into ionizing particles which are subsequently detected in a proportional gas counter. The principle and the fabrication of the multi-grid are described and some preliminary results obtained with a prototype of 200 cm×8 cm are reported; a detection efficiency of 48% has been measured at 2.5 Å with a monochromatic neutron beam line, showing the good potential of this new technique.

    Objective: Associating Liver Partition and Portal vein ligation for Staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) has been tested in various indications and clinical scenarios, leading to steady improvements in safety. This report presents the current status of ALPPS. Summary Background Data: ALPPS offers improved resectability, but drawbacks are regularly pointed out regarding safety and oncologic benefits. Methods: During the 12th biennial congress of the European African-Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (Mainz, Germany, May 23-26, 2017) an expert meeting "10th anniversary of ALPP" was held to discuss indications, management, mechanisms of regeneration, as well as pitfalls of this novel technique. The aim of the meeting was to make an inventory of what has been achieved and what remains unclear in ALPPS. Results: Precise knowledge of liver anatomy and its variations is paramount for success in ALPPS. Technical modifications, mainly less invasive approaches like partial, mini- or laparoscopic ALPPS, mostly aiming at minimizing the extensiveness of the first-stage procedure, are associated with improved safety. In fibrotic/cirrhotic livers the degree of future liver remnant hypertrophy after ALPPS appears some less than that in noncirrhotic. Recent data from the only prospective randomized controlled trial confirmed significant higher resection rates in ALPPS with similar peri-operative morbidity and mortality rates compared with conventional 2-stage hepatectomy including portal vein embolization. ALPPS is effective reliably even after failure of portal vein embolization. Conclusions: Although ALPPS is now an established 2-stage hepatectomy additional data are warranted to further refine indication and technical aspects. Long-term oncological outcome results are needed to establish the place of ALPPS in patients with initially nonresectable liver tumors.

    Carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is one of the most commonly used materials in the aerospace industry today. CFRP in pre-impregnated form is an anisotropic material whose properties can be controlled to a high level by the designer. Sometimes, these properties make the material hard to predict with regards to how the geometry affects manufacturing aspects. This chapter describes 11 design rules that describe geometrical design choices and deals with manufacturability problems that are connected to them, why they are connected, and how they can be minimized or avoided. Examples of design choices dealt with in the rules include double curvature shapes, assembly of uncured CFRP components, and access for nondestructive testing.

    Carbon ber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is one of the most commonly used materials in the aerospace industry today. CFRP in pre- impregnated form is an anisotropic material whose properties can be controlled to a high level by the designer. Sometimes, these properties make the material hard to predict with regards to how the geometry affects manufacturing aspects. This paper describes eleven design rules originating from different guidelines that describe geometrical design choices and deals with manufacturability problems that are connected to them, why they are connected and how they can be minimized or avoided. Examples of design choices dealt with in the rules include double curvature shapes, assembly of uncured CFRP components and access for non-destructive testing (NDT). To verify the technical content and ensure practicability, the rules were developed by, inter alia, studying literature and performing case studies at SAAB Aerostructures. The research was done through a collaboration between Linköping University and SAAB Aerostructures in a state-funded project. This ensured a balanced approach between academic advancement and usefulness in commercial projects.

    Spinterface engineering has shown quite important roles in organic spintronics as it can improve spin injection or extraction. In this study, 11,11,12,12-tetracyanonaptho-2,6-quinodimethane (TNAP) is introduced as an interfacial layer for a prototype interface of Fe/TNAP. An element-specific investigation of the electronic and magnetic structures of Fe/TNAP system by use of near edge X-Ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is reported. Strong hybridization between TNAP and Fe and induced magnetization of N atoms in TNAP molecule are observed. XMCD sum rule analysis demonstrates that the adsorption of TNAP reduces the spin moment of Fe by 12%. In addition, induced magnetization in N K-edge of TNAP is also found with other commonly used ferromagnets in organic spintronics, such as La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 and permalloy, which makes TNAP a very promising molecule for spinterface engineering in organic spintronics.

    Sedan urminnes tider har mänskligheten drabbats av farsoter som orsakat lidande och till sist död. De sjukdomar vi idag enkelt botar med penicillin var dödliga för bara drygt ett halvt sekel sedan. Infektionssjukdomar orsakde de flesta dödsfallen. Dödsorsaker var något som måste anges i dödsattesten. År 1860 hade Sverige 115 olika dödsorsaker och 30 år senare fanns det 302. Vi hade inte blivit sjukare utan vetenskapen hade upptäckt att baktierier orsakade många av de vanligaste infektionssjukdomarna.

    Artikeln listar några av de vanligaste sjukdomarna i vårt land under 1700- till 1900-talet och antalet avlidna i de olika farsoterna. Medicinalverkets klassifiaktionssystem behandlas samt källor och statistik.

    Ur dödsorsakerna finns det mycket information att hämta. De visar levnadsförhållandena i ett samhälle och samhällets status som kan mätas i till exempel spädbarnsdödligheten. Ju lägre spädbarnsdödlighet desto bättre välstånd anses landet ha. Genom dödsorsakerna kan man också kartlägga och följa epidemier som grasserat i vårt land. Även lokal sjukdomsspridning som begränsat sig till ett visst eller vissa områden, så kallade endemier, går att följa.

    Abstract [en]

    Three oligothiophenes were evaluated as PET tracers for the study of local and systemic amyloidosis ex vivo using tissue from patients with amyloid deposits and in vivo using healthy animals and PET-CT. The ex vivo binding studies revealed that all three labeled compounds bound specifically to human amyloid deposits. Specific binding was found in the heart, kidney, liver and spleen. To verify the specificity of the oligothiophenes towards amyloid deposits, tissue sections with amyloid pathology were stained using the fluorescence exhibited by the compounds and evaluated with multiphoton microscopy. Furthermore, in vivo rat and monkey PET-CT studies showed very low uptake in the brain, pancreas and heart of the healthy animals indicating low non-specific binding to healthy tissue. The biological evaluations indicated that this is a promising group of compounds for the visualization of systemic and localized amyloidosis.

    Nonfullerene (NF) organic solar cells (OSCs) have been attracting significant attention in the past several years. It is still challenging to achieve high-performance flexible NF OSCs. NF acceptors are chemically reactive and tend to react with the low-temperature-processed low-work-function (low-WF) interfacial layers, such as polyethylenimine ethoxylated (PEIE), which leads to the S shape in the current-density characteristics of the cells. In this work, the chemical interaction between the NF active layer and the polymer interfacial layer of PEIE is deactivated by increasing its protonation. The PEIE processed from aqueous solution shows more protonated N+ than that processed from isopropyl alcohol solution, observed from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. NF solar cells (active layer: PCE-10:IEICO-4F) with the protonated PEIE interfacial layer show an efficiency of 13.2%, which is higher than the reference cells with a ZnO interlayer (12.6%). More importantly, the protonated PEIE interfacial layer processed from aqueous solution does not require a further thermal annealing treatment (only processing at room temperature). The room-temperature processing and effective WF reduction enable the demonstration of high-performance (12.5%) flexible NF OSCs.

    This paper describes the front-end of a fully integrated analog interface for 300 MSps, high-definition video digitizers in a system on-chip environment. The analog interface is implemented in a 1.2 V, 65-nm digital CMOS process and the design minimizes the number of power domains using core transistors only. Each analog video receiver channel contains an integrated multiplexer with a current-mode dc-clamp, a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) and a pseudo second-order RC low-pass filter. The digital charge-pump clamp is integrated with low-voltage bootstrapped tee-switches inside the multiplexer, while restoring the dc component of ac-coupled inputs. The PGA contains a four-stage fully symmetric pseudo-differential amplifier with common-mode feedforward and inherent common-mode feedback, utilized in a closed loop capacitive feedback configuration. The amplifier features offset cancellation during the horizontal blanking. The video interface is evaluated using a unique test signal over a range of video formats for INL+/DNL+, INL-/DNL-. The 0.07-0.39 mV INL, 2-70 mu V DNL, and 66-74 dB of SFDR, enable us to target various formats for 9-12 bit Low-voltage digitizers.

    The intimate association of soil microorganisms with the soil matrix complicates analysis of their metabolism, since thorough separation of intact cells from the matrix is very difficult using standard protocols. Thus, in the study reported here, in situ glucose decomposition and metabolism in humus from a coniferous forest soil was monitored and evaluated using 'solution state' 13C NMR, which can be used in a non-invasive manner. [U-13C] glucose was added at a concentration of 1.73 mmol C g-1 dry organic matter, which is known to allow maximal substrate induced respiration (SIR), and the microbial metabolism of the added C was followed over a period of 28 days. The data showed that ~50% of the added glucose was consumed within three days, coinciding with the appearance of label in CH3, -CH2- and -CH = CH-groups, and in glycerol-carbons, suggesting that olefinic triacylglycerols were being formed, probably located in oil droplets. During days two to three, around 40% of the consumed glucose C was allocated into solid state components, about 40% was respired and about 20% was found as triglycerols. The triacylglycerol signal reached a maximum after 13 days, but subsequently declined by 60%, as the triacylglycerols were apparently consumed, by day 28 of the incubation. Our results indicate there was an initial formation of structural microbial C (solid state carbon) followed by formation of storage lipid C, which subsequently decreased, probably because it was used to provide the organisms with energy when the external energy source (i.e. the glucose) was depleted. The formation of unsaturated triacylglycerols, typical storage metabolites of eucaryotes, suggests that fungi were the most active organisms in the glucose degradation. ⌐ 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.

    Abstract [en]

    Cr/Sc multilayer mirrors, synthesized by ion-assisted magnetron sputter deposition, are proved to have a high near-normal reflectivity of R = 14.5% at a grazing angle of 87.5degrees measured at the wavelength A = 3.11 nm, which is an improvement of more than 31% compared with previously published results. Elastic recoil detection analyses show that the mirrors contained as much as 15 at. % of N and traces of C and O. Soft x-ray reflectivity simulations reveal interface widths of sigma = 0.34 nm and an exceptionally small layer thickness drift of similar to1.6 X 10(-5) nm/multilayer period throughout the stack. Simulations show that a reflectivity of R = 25.6% is attainable if impurities and layer thickness drift can be eliminated. The abrupt interfaces are achieved with ion assistance with a low ion energy of 24 eV and high ion-to-metal flux ratios of 7.1 and 23.1 during Cr and Se sputter deposition, respectively. In addition, a near-normal incidence reflectivity of 5.5% for the C VI emission line (lambda = 3.374 nm) from a laser plasma source was verified. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

    Abstract [en]

    Although significant improvements have been achieved for organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs), the top-performing devices still show power conversion efficiencies far behind those of commercialized solar cells. One of the main reasons is the large driving force required for separating electron-hole pairs. Here, we demonstrate an efficiency of 14.7% in the single-junction OPV by using a new polymer donor PTO2 and a nonfullerene acceptor IT-4F. The device possesses an efficient charge generation at a low driving force. Ultrafast transient absorption measurements probe the formation of loosely bound charge pairs with extended lifetime that impedes the recombination of charge carriers in the blend. The theoretical studies reveal that the molecular electrostatic potential (ESP) between PTO2 and IT-4F is large, and the induced intermolecular electric field may assist the charge generation. The results suggest OPVs have the potential for further improvement by judicious modulation of ESP.

    14-Year Survey in a Swedish County Reveals a Pronounced Increase in Bloodstream Infections (BSI). Comorbidity: An Independent Risk Factor for Both BSI and Mortality2016In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 11, no 11Article in journal (Refereed)

    Objectives: we assessed the incidence, risk factors and outcome of BSI over a 14-year period (2000-2013) in a Swedish county.

    Methods: retrospective cohort study on culture confirmed BSI among patients in the county of Östergötland, Sweden, with approximately 440,000 inhabitants. A BSI was defined as either community-onset BSI (CO-BSI) or hospital-acquired BSI (HA-BSI).

    Results: of a total of 11,480 BSIs, 67% were CO-BSI and 33% HA-BSI. The incidence of BSI increased by 64% from 945 to 1,546 per 100,000 hospital admissions per year during the study period. The most prominent increase, 83% was observed within the CO-BSI cohort whilst HA-BSI increased by 32%. Prescriptions of antibiotics in outpatient care decreased with 24% from 422 to 322 prescriptions dispensed/1,000 inhabitants/year, whereas antibiotics prescribed in hospital increased by 67% (from 424 to 709 DDD per 1,000 days of care). The overall 30-day mortality for HA-BSIs was 17.2%, compared to 10.6% for CO-BSIs, with an average yearly increase per 100,000 hospital admissions of 2 and 5% respectively. The proportion of patients with one or more comorbidities, increased from 20.8 to 55.3%. In multivariate analyses, risk factors for mortality within 30 days were: HA-BSI (2.22); two or more comorbidities (1.89); single comorbidity (1.56); CO-BSI (1.21); male (1.05); and high age (1.04).

    Conclusion: this survey revealed an alarming increase in the incidence of BSI over the 14-year study period. Interventions to decrease BSI in general should be considered together with robust antibiotic stewardship programmes to avoid both over- and underuse of antibiotics.

    Two types of Si:Er light emitting devices have been processed and characterized with an aim to efficiently use hot electrons for impact excitation. One is a p+-SiGe/i-Si/n-Si:Er:O/n+-Si tunneling diode with a design favoring electron tunneling from the SiGe valence band to the Si conduction band and subsequent acceleration. Another type of Si:Er light emitters is based on a heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) structure containing an Er-doped active layer in the collector. In these devices, one can introduce hot electrons from the HBT emitter in a controlled way with a collector bias voltage prior to the avalanche breakdown to improve the impact excitation efficiency. Intense electroluminescence was observed at 300 K at low current (0.1 A cm-2) and low bias (3 V). An impact cross-section value of 1 × 10-14 cm2 has been estimated, which is a 100-fold increase compared with the values reported from any other type of Er-doped LEDs. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.

    This paper presents a detailed clock jitter characteristic analysis of a fully integrated 1.5-GHz resonant clocking fabricated in 130-nm CMOS, with 57% total clock power saving, compared to the conventional clocking implemented in the same test-chip. The jitter measurement result is in good agreement with the jitter analysis. Furthermore, a jitter-suppression technique based on injection locking phenomenon has been utilized to reduce the clock jitter and to solve the jitter peaking problem. Measurements show about 50% peak-to-peak clock jitter reduction from 28.4 ps to 14.5 ps after the activation of the injection locking.

    Urinary obstruction is associated with inflammation and oxidative stress, leading to renal dysfunction. Previous studies have shown that 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14)-prostaglandin J(2) (15d-PGJ(2)) has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Using a unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) mouse model, we examined the effects of 15d-PGJ(2) on oxidative stress and inflammation in the kidney. Mice were subjected to UUO for 3 days and treated with 15d-PGJ(2). Protein and RNA expression were examined using immunoblotting and qPCR. 15d-PGJ(2) increased NF-E2-related nuclear factor erythroid-2 (Nrf2) protein expression in response to UUO, and heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), a downstream target of Nrf2, was induced by 15d-PGJ(2). Additionally, 15d-PGJ(2) prevented protein carbonylation, a UUO-induced oxidative stress marker. Inflammation, measured by nuclear NF-kappa B, F4/80, and MCP-1, was increased in response to UUO and further increased by 15d-PGJ(2). Renal injury was aggravated by 15d-PGJ(2) treatment as measured by kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) and cortical caspase 3 content. No effect of 15d-PGJ(2) was observed on renal function in mice subjected to UUO. This study illustrates differentiated functioning of 15d-PGJ(2) on inflammation and oxidative stress in response to obstructive nephropathy.     Conclusions: This follow-up showed a stable and significant decrease in median oxygen desaturation index 4% (ODI(4)) values over the years. Approximately two-thirds of the patients fulfilled the success criteria (ODI4 reduction of 50% and andlt;20) after 15 years. A majority had improved/cured excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and were satisfied. No increased mortality rate was seen. Objectives: To evaluate sleep apnoea recordings and symptoms in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome 15 years after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) compared to baseline and previous follow-ups. Methods: This was a non-randomized, prospective intervention study on 50 patients who underwent UPPP during 1985-88. Their initial median age was 49 years (range 38-71) and ODI4 was 26.5 (4-82). Results: In all, 13 patients had died; 26 patients underwent sleep apnoea recordings. Median ODI4 had decreased from 26.5 (range 4-82) to 8.5 (0-60), p andlt; 0.01, a mean reduction of 52%; 65% of patients achieved the success criteria. One-third was objectively categorized as non-snorers. Median body mass index was unchanged. The questionnaires were answered by 32 of 37 patients; 88% reported improved or cured EDS and 78% were satisfied. Pharyngeal disturbances ratings were low. The standardized mortality rate did not differ from the general Swedish population.

    17 beta-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (17HSDs) are involved in the local regulation of sex steroids. 17HSD1 converts oestrone (El) to the more potent oestradiol (E2) and 17HSD2 catalyses the reverse reaction. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of these enzymes in premenopausal breast cancers and to analyse if they have any prognostic or tamoxifen predictive value. Premenopausal patients with invasive breast cancer, stage II (UICC), were randomised to either 2 years of adjuvant tamoxifen (n = 276) or no tamoxifen (n = 288). The median follow-up was 13.9 years (range 10.5-17.5). The expression of 17HSD1 and 17HSD2 was analysed with immunohistochemistry using tissue microarrays. The enzyme expression level (-/+/++/+++) was successfully determined in 396 and 373 tumours, respectively. Women with hormone-receptor positive tumours, with low levels (-/+/++) of 17HSD1, had a 43% reduced risk of recurrence, when treated with tamoxifen (Hazard Ratio (HR) = 0.57; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.37-0.86; p = 0.0086). On the other hand high expression (+++) of 17HSD1 was associated with no significant difference between the two treatment arms (HR = 0.91; 95% CI, 0.43-1.95; p = 0.82). The interaction between 17HSD1 and tamoxifen was significant during the first 5 years of follow-up (p = 0.023). In the cohort of systemically untreated patients no prognostic importance was observed for 17HSD1. We found no predictive or prognostic value for 17HSD2. This is the first report of 17HSD1 in a cohort of premenopausal women with breast cancer randomised to tamoxifen. Our data suggest that 17HSD1 might be a predictive factor in this group of patients.

    Sex steroids play an important role in the development and differentiation in several tissues. Biologically active hormones that are locally converted in endocrine organs in the tissue where they exert their effects without release into extracellular space is a field of endocrinology that has been called intracrinology. In pre-menopausal women the ovary is the main source of estrogens, but in post-menopausal women the estrogen production as main site of synthesis moves to peripheral tissues and almost all of the sex steroids are synthesised from precursors of adrenal origin. In breast cancer 60-80% of the tumors express high levels of oestrogen receptor (ER) alpha which gives estrogen a proliferative effect. Breast tumors tend to have a higher intratumoral estrogen concentration than normal breast tissue and plasma, and in situ synthesis and the metabolism of estrogens is believed to be of great importance for the development and progression of the disease. The activity of estrogen metabolizing enzymes in breast are mainly aromatase, estrone sulfatases and 17HSD enzymes. 17HSD1 and 17HSD2 are the family members known to be of main importance in breast cancer. High expression of 17HSD1 has been associated to poor prognosis in breast cancer and late relapse among patients with ER-positive tumors. One of the mechanisms behind high 17HSD1 expression is gene amplification. Low or absent expression of 17HSD2 is associated to decreased survival in ER-positive breast cancer. 17HSD14 is one of the latest discovered 17HSD enzymes, transfection of 17HSD14 in human breast cancer cells significantly decreased the levels of estradiol in the culture medium. Low expression of 17HSD14 mRNA expression in breast cancer was correlated to decreased survival.

    The understanding of intratumoral synthesis of sex steroids in breast cancer is crucial to understand the disease both in pre- and post-menopausal women. Further studies are desirable to state the direct role of these enzymes in breast cancer and which patients that may benefit from new therapeutic strategies targeting 17HSD enzymes. The new inhibitors targeting 17HSD1 have shown promising results in preclinical studies to have clinical potential in the future.

    Estrogens have an important role in the progression of breast cancer. The 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17HSD) family has been identified to be of significance in hormone-dependent tissues. 17HSD1 and 17HSD2 are the main 17HSD enzymes involved in breast cancer investigated this far, but it is possible that other hormone-regulating enzymes have a similar role. 17HSD5 and 17HSD12 are associated with sex steroid metabolism, and 17HSD14 is a newly discovered enzyme that may be involved in the estrogen balance. The mRNA expression of 17HSD5, 17HSD12, and 17HSD14 were analyzed in 131 breast cancer specimens by semiquantitative real-time PCR. The results were compared with recurrence-free survival and breast cancer-specific survival of the patients. The breast cancer cell lines MCF7, SKBR3, and ZR75-1 were transiently transfected with 17HSD14 to investigate any possible effect on estradiol levels. We found that high 17HSD5 was related to significantly higher risk of late relapse in estrogen receptor (ER)-positive patients remaining recurrence-free later than 5 years after diagnosis (P = 0.02). No relation to 17HSD12 expression was found, indicating that 17HSD12 is of minor importance in breast cancer. Patients with ER-positive tumors with high expression levels of 17HSD14 showed a significantly better prognosis about recurrence-free survival (P = 0.008) as well as breast cancer-specific survival (P = 0.01), confirmed by multivariate analysis (P = 0.04). Transfection of 17HSD14 in the human breast cancer cells MCF7 and SKBR3 significantly decreased the levels of estradiol, presenting an effect of high expression levels of the enzyme. ©2006 American Association for Cancer Research.

    Introduction: 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (17βHSDs) are important enzymes regulating the pool of bioactive steroids in the breast. The current study was undertaken in order to evaluate implications of 17βHSD14 in breast cancer, measuring 17βHSD14 protein expression in breast tumours.

    Methods: An antibody targeting the 17βHSD14 antigen was generated and validated using HSD17B14-transfected cells and a peptide-neutralising assay. Tissue microarrays with tumours from 912 post-menopausal women diagnosed with lymph node-negative breast cancer, and randomised to adjuvant tamoxifen or no endocrine treatment, were analysed for 17βHSD14 protein expression with immunohistochemistry.

    Results: Results were obtained from 847 tumours. Patients with oestrogen positive tumours with high 17βHSD14 expression had fewer local recurrences when treated with tamoxifen (HR 0.38; 95% C.I. 0.19–0.77, p = 0.007) compared to patients with lower tumoural 17βHSD14 expression, for whom tamoxifen did not reduce the number of local recurrences (HR 1.19; 95% C.I. 0.54–2.59; p = 0.66). No prognostic importance of 17βHSD14 was seen for systemically untreated patients.

    Conclusions: Using a highly specific validated antibody for immunohistochemical analysis of a large number of breast tumours, we have shown that tumoural expression levels of 17βHSD14 can predict the outcome of adjuvant tamoxifen treatment in terms of local recurrence-free survival in patients with lymph node-negative ER+ breast cancer. The results need be verified to confirm any clinical relevance.

    The 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17HSD) enzymes are involved in the local regulation of sex steroids. The 17HSD type 1 enzyme catalyses the interconversion of the weak oestrone (E1) to the more potent oestradiol (E2), whereas 17HSD type 2 catalyses the oxidation of E2 to E1. The aim of this study was to correlate the expression of these enzymes in the tumour with the recurrence-free survival of tamoxifen-treated breast cancer patients. We used real-time reverse transcriptase PCR to investigate the mRNA expression of 17HSD types 1 and 2 in tumour samples from 230 postmenopausal patients. For the patients with oestrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancer, we found a statistically significant positive correlation between recurrence-free survival and expression of 17HSD type 2 (P = 0.026). We examined the ratio of 17HSD types 2 and 1, and ER-positive patients with low ratios showed a significantly higher rate of recurrence than those with higher ratios (P = 0.0047), ER positive patients with high expression levels of 17HSD type 1 had a significantly higher risk for late relapse (P = 0.0051). The expression of 17HSD types 1 and 2 in breast cancer differs from the expression of these enzymes in normal mammary gland, and this study indicates that the expression has prognostic significance in breast cancer.

    När börjar mediehistorien? Mediehistoria var länge liktydigt med historien om 1900-talets massmedier  press, radio, teve och film. I den här boken skildras istället ett äldre medielandskap. Med utgångspunkt i Stockholmsutställningen 1897 beskriver författarna det utbud av gamla och nya medier som samlades på utställningen, från äldre attraktioner som camera obscura, dioramor och vaxfigurer till spektakulära nyheter som fonograf, kinematograf och röntgenbilder. Boken ger inblickar i några av det sena 1800-talets ledande medieindustrier, och diskuterar bland annat frågor om mediekonsumtion, publikpositioner och historiska medieringsvillkor. De medietekniker som presenterades på Stockholmsutställningen 1897 lagrade på samma gång utställningen för framtiden. Ett centralt tema är därför hur dessa medieringar blivit identiska med minnet av utställningen, och hur detta arkiv organiserats utifrån mediernas specifika egenskaper. På den DVD-skiva som medföljer boken har ett nytt mediearkiv skapats över Stockholmsutställningen 1897 och dess många länkar till en bredare mediekultur.

Åtta forskargrupper presenterar sina perspektiv och preliminära resultat. Många viktiga frågor behandlas i årsboken: Har attityderna till kärnavfallet förändrats i platsundersökningskommunerna under 2000-talet?

    Hur ser utvecklingen där ut jämfört med landet i övrigt och vad ligger bakom människors olika ställningstaganden? Vilka resurser kan det lokala näringslivet i platsundersökningskommunerna uppskattas ha inför upphandlingsbehoven när slutförvarsprojektet ska genomföras?

    Vilka lokala socioekonomiska och befolkningsmässiga effekter kan man förvänta sig? Hur tillvaratas allmänhetens, experternas och myndigheternas argumentation och ståndpunkter i samrådsprocessen? Hur förhåller sig den nationella strategin och lagstiftningen till EUmedlemskapets regelsystem och till andra internationella överenskommelser? Vilken är bakgrunden till de vägval som gjorts – och inte gjorts – när det gäller hanteringen av kärnavfall och använt kärnbränsle i Sverige? Varför hamnade hanteringen av använt kärnbränsle i den nationella politikens centrum på 1970-talet och vilka var debattens centrala argument?

    Dessa frågeställningar belyses närmare i årsbokens olika kapitel. Bidragen beaktar såväl den dagsaktuella situationen som de processer och överväganden som lett fram till dagens vägval. I boken presenteras först några kapitel som tar upp situationen idag. De båda inledande kapitlen diskuterar attityder till kärnavfallet, i platsundersökningskommunerna och i Sverige i stort, samt ger en bild av hur människor resonerar kring hur hembygd och framti kan komma att påverkas av ett slutförvar under många tusen år. Sedan följer analyser av det lokala näringslivets kapaciteter och den socioekonomiska, respektive befolkningsmässiga betydelsen av att slutförvaret förläggs till Östhammar eller Oskarshamn. Andra aktuella teman som tas upp är hur samrådet har utvecklats lokalt samt hur besluten kring hanteringen av kärnavfallet påverkas av nationell, regional och internationell lagstiftning.

    Attityder, engagemang och vägval påverkas inte enbart av aktuella förhållanden och processer. Historiska händelser och avgöranden styr ofta direkt eller indirekt tankar och handlingar i specifika banor. Det är därför betydelsefullt att också hålla ett öga i backspegeln för att bättre förstå de komplexa sammanhang och utvecklingsprocesser som påverkat dagens och morgondagens beslut. SKB:s samhällsforskningsprogram har därför stött även tillbakablickande forskning. Här presenteras bidrag från två sådana projekt.

    Det första handlar om övervägandena bakom Sveriges och andra länders val av strategier för hantering av använt kärnbränsle och det andra om efterkrigstidens politiska debatt där kapitlet i denna årsbok fokuserar på 1970-talet, då en tidigare strategi kring kärnavfallet kom att ifrågasättas och ändras.

    Näringsliv och arbetsliv är inne i en snabb teknisk och organisatorisk utveckling. Framförallt är det den så kallade informationstekniken som ses som ny och som genom sina karaktäristika revolutionerar hela världen och därmed också Sverige. Vad är det som händer och vad kan vi förvänta oss skall hända? I debatten förekommer både utopier och dystopier. I de förstnämnda betonas direktdemokrati, nya sysselsättningsmöjligheter, förbättrade arbetsvillkor, flexibla arbetstider, demokratiska organisationsformer med välinformerade och aktiva anställda, kontinuerlig kompetensutveckling osv. I dystopierna är förutsägelserna ibland de rakt motsatta, ibland betonande en förväntad eller befarad polarisering av medborgare och människor i arbete. Jag skall i den här artikeln koncentrera mig på vad som händer med livet inne i företag och organisationer, dvs. ett klart inomorganisatoriskt perspektiv. Min ambition är att ge en bred bild av svenskt arbetsliv – inte koncentrera mig på de massmediala teknikspetsföretagen – och att exemplifiera vad som i praktiken hänt genom några arbetsplatser. Jag skall också blicka bakåt, det är inte första gången som ny teknik utvecklas och används.

    Den första delen, den tillbakablickande, skall jag framförallt göra genom att relatera den till synes alltid lika livliga debatten om det är tekniken som styr organisationen eller organisationen som styr tekniken.Syftet med den delen är dels att påvisa kontinuiteten både i praktik och teori dels att placera in diskussionen i den organisatoriska kontext där den hör hemma. I den andra delen är ambitionen att vara dagsaktuell ochbeskriva, analysera och diskutera teknik och organisation i dagens svenska arbetsliv.

    Abstract [en]

    A 1D inorganic coordination polymer template route was firstly developed to synthesize metal sulfide aligned-nanowire bundles. Based on this strategy, CdS and HgS aligned-nanowire bundles with high yields were successfully prepared in a water system at room temperature using KCd(NCS)3 as a soft template. The results revealed that the morphologies of the MS (M=Cd, Hg) aligned-nanowire bundles were uniform with lengths of several microns and the diameters of each single wire were ca. 10–30 nm and 60–80 nm for CdS and HgS, respectively.
