The double-edged sword - abused womens experiences of digital technology: Det Tveeggade Svärdet – Teknologins Betydelse för Kvinnor som Utsätts för Våld i Nära Relation2022In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Technology has become a vital part of peoples lives. Mobile phones, smart phones, social media platforms, apps and other internet-connected devices and software have changed our way of interacting with each other, as well as managing everyday tasks. In this article, the use of such technology is discussed in relation to its integration in the lives of women who are victims of domestic violence. The study is based on interviews with 21 Swedish women, all abused by their former husband or boyfriend. The empirical data demonstrates how technology is used by the perpetrators as a means of coercive control. The analysis shows that the accessibility of digital media enables the abuser to be constantly present in the womans life, even after she has left him. However, the same technology is also important to the women, enabling them to manage victimisation, monitor the perpetrators, store evidence, obtain information, gain support and keep in touch with family and friends. This article reveals the use of technology in IPV as a double-edged sword; providing the capacity to protect and even to use as a counter-strike by victims, as well as enhancing perpetrators capacity to harm.

Ambivalent and Consistent Relationships: The Role of Personal Networks in Cases of Domestic Violence2021In: Social Inclusion, ISSN 2183-2803, E-ISSN 2183-2803, Vol. 9, no 4, p. 211-221Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Social networks are usually considered as positive sources of social support, a role which has been extensively studied in the context of domestic violence. To victims of abuse, social networks often provide initial emotional and practical help as well useful information ahead of formal institutions. Recently, however, attention has been paid to the negative responses of social networks. In this article, we advance the theoretical debate on social networks as a source of social support by moving beyond the distinction between positive and negative ties. We do so by proposing the concepts of relational ambivalence and consistency, which describe the interactive processes by which people, intentionally or inadvertently, disregard—or align with—each other’s role‐relational expectations, therefore undermining—or reinforcing—individual’s choices of action. We analyse the qualitative accounts of 19 female victims of domestic violence in Sweden, who described the responses of their personal networks during and after the abuse. We observe how the relationships embedded in these networks were described in ambivalent and consistent terms, and how they played a role in supporting or undermining women in reframing their loving relationships as abusive; in accounting or dismissing perpetrators’ responsibilities for the abuse; in relieving women from role‐expectations and obligations or in burdening them with further responsibilities; and in supporting or challenging their pathways out of domestic abuse. Our analysis suggests that social isolation cannot be considered a simple result of a lack of support but of the complex dynamics in which support is offered and accepted or withdrawn and refused.

Role of narrative and social networks in thwarting violence and sexual abuse in young people's lives2020In: British Journal of Social Work, ISSN 0045-3102, E-ISSN 1468-263X, Vol. 50, p. 2172-2190Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Combining narrative analysis with social network analysis, this article analyses thecase of a young Swedish female who had been physically and sexually abused. Weshow how she became trapped in an abusive relationship at the age of fourteen yearsfollowing social work intervention in her family home, and how she ultimately escaped from this abuse aged nineteen years. The analysis illustrates the significance ofresponses to interpersonal violence from the social networks that surround youngpeople; responses that can both entrap them in abusive relationships by blamingthem for their problems and enable them to escape abuse by recognising theirstrengths and facilitating their choices. The article argues that the case for social workapproaches that envision young people’s social networks after protective interventions have been implemented. The article explains that such an approach has the potential to reconcile the competing challenges of being responsive to young people’sneeds while anticipating the heightened risk of being exposed to sexual abuse youngpeople face when estranged from their families or after their trust in professionalshas been eroded.

    Abstract [sv]

What counts as a family: and who is to decide2019In: What about the family?: practices of responsibility in care / [ed] Marian A. Verkerk, Hilde Lindemann, Janice McLaughlin, New York: Oxford University Press, 2019, Vol. Sidorna 80-88, p. 80-88Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This case study seeks to explore som of the complexities involved in a child's and later a young woman's efforts to be recognized by the adult world as a human being in deep trouble. It originates from an interview with Mary, a twenty-three-year-old woman who participated in my study of social network responses to young people with health problems. Since her family was the locus of her troubles, she had tried to get recognition from adults at a daycare center, from the healthcare system, from social services, at school, and finally from the Stockholm City Mission (SCM), a nongovernmental organization providing help for socially vulnerable people in the city of Stockholm.

Mäns våld mot kvinnor i nära relationer2016Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

What Social Networks Do in the Aftermath of Domestic Violence2015In: British Journal of Criminology, ISSN 0007-0955, Vol. 55, no 6, p. 1040-1057Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Claims that domestic violence is best deemed a ‘hidden crime’ tend to equate being hidden with non-disclosure to social services, the police or other criminal justice professionals. However, the social worlds of domestic violence victims are much more intricate than this. Family, relatives, friends and neighbours usually form the immediate social world of domestic violence. They can be regarded as a ‘response network’ that may be mobilized in the aftermath of domestic violence. This article focuses on the analysis of three women’s narratives about what happened in their social networks in the aftermath of violence. In all three cases, the culturally based understanding of how to deal with unacceptable behaviour in the social network constituted a framework for the response action. The analysis shows how social networks can be both responsible enough to intervene in the violence and responsive enough to recognize how the violence affects women and their children.

Young women selling sex online: narratives on regulating2015In: Adolescent Health, Medicine and Therapeutics, ISSN 1179-318X, Vol. 6, p. 17-27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The current study concerns young women’s life stories of their experiences selling sex online before the age of 18. The aim was to gain an understanding of young women’s perceptions of the reasons they started, continued, and stopped selling sex. The study included interviews with 15 young women between the ages of 15 and 25 (M=18.9). Thematic analysis was used to identify similarities and differences in the narratives. Three themes and eight sub-themes were identified in relation to different stages in their lives in the sex trade. The themes were organized into three parts, each with its own storyline: “Entering – adverse life experiences”; traumatic events: feeling different and being excluded. “Immersion – using the body as a tool for regulating feelings”; being seen: being touched: being in control: affect regulation and self-harming. “Exiting – change or die”; living close to death: the process of quitting. The informants all had stable social lives in the sense that they had roofs over their heads, food to eat, and no substance-abuse issues. None had a third party who arranged the sexual contacts and none were currently trafficked. They described how their experiences of traumatic events and of feeling different and excluded had led them into the sex trade. Selling sex functioned as a way to be seen, to handle traumatic events, and to regulate feelings. Professionals working with young people who sell sex online need to understand the complex web of mixed feelings and emotional needs that can play a role in selling sex. Young people selling sex might need guidance in relationship building as well as help processing traumatic experiences and ending self-harming behavior. Further studies are needed on the functions of online sex selling and on the exit process for young people, in order to prevent entrance and facilitate exiting.

The Teller-focused Interview: Interviewing as a Relational Practice2014In: Qualitative Social Work, ISSN 1473-3250, E-ISSN 1741-3117Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article traces its origin to 25 years of qualitative study of men’s violence towards women in close relationships. Major methodological concerns have involved finding ways to facilitate and support the research participants – women, men and children – in formulating themselves in as genuine and multifaceted a narrative as possible. Over the years, the approach ‘the teller-focused   interview’ has emerged, with its theoretical and methodological base in feminist research, narrative theory and methodology, and a dialectical way of thinking about the relationship between interviewer and interviewee. It views them as partners with different tasks and responsibilities in the research process. This dialectic is referred to as a ‘relational practice’. It is argued that the methodological concerns brought up are not limited to the area of violence towards women but are also applicable in studies of various types of human experience that are complex, sensitive, and difficult to bring up. Indications for the use of the approach will be addressed, and basic aspects of the relational practice of tellerfocused interviewing will be presented. Some remarks on the relationship between qualitative research and psychotherapy will also be included.

    What is Narrative Research?2014Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Narrative research has become a catchword in the social sciences today, promising new fields of inquiry and creative solutions to persistent problems.

This book brings together ideas about narrative from a variety of contexts across the social sciences and synthesizes understandings of the field. Rather than focusing on theory, it examines how narrative research is conducted and applied. It operates as a practical introductory guide, basic enough for first-time researchers, but also as a window onto the more complex questions and difficulties that all researchers in this area face.

The authors guide readers through current debates about how to obtain and analyse narrative data, about the nature of narrative, the place of the researcher, the limits of researcher interpretations, and the significance of narrative work in applied and in broader political contexts.

"Without the Internet, I never would have sold sex": Young Women Selling Sex Online2014In: Cyberpsychology : Journal of Psychosocial Research on Cyberspace, ISSN 1802-7962, E-ISSN 1802-7962, Vol. 8, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Among Swedish youth with experience of selling sex, the Internet is the most common means of contact between buyer and seller. There are few descriptions of how these contacts are established, but studies have indicated that young people under the age of 18 seldom engage in open prostitution online. This study aimed to examine what role the Internet and the use of smartphones play in young women selling sex online, focusing on the method of contact and the characteristics of the communication online between buyer and seller. The study included 15 young women between the ages of 15 and 25 (M=18.9) who had sold sex online before the age of 18. Thematic analysis was used to identify similarities and differences in the narratives.

Two main themes were identified: (I) Internet use—Part of daily life, for good and bad, and Depending on mood. The young women described using the Internet on a daily basis. During periods of poorer psychological health they were more active on sites focusing on self-destructiveness and sex. During these periods, they also sold sex more frequently. (II) Patterns of contacts—Innocent/curious, Dating, and Advertising. The narratives about communication prior to a sexual encounter detailed differences ranging from being lured to direct negotiations. The results indicate that there is a group of young women who sell sex online that is not in the open prostitution. Police and other authorities working with young women selling sex need to better understand the coded sexual communication behind some of these sexual encounters and how different communication strategies might affect the young women

Familjeliv hos samkönade par och andra regnbågsfamiljer2012In: Nätverksfamiljen / [ed] Margareta Bäck-Wiklund & Thomas Johansson, Stockholm: Natur och kultur, 2012, 2, p. 139-157Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The Trouble with "Troubled Girls"2012In: Girls at Risk: Swedish Longitudional Research on Adjustment / [ed] Anna-Karin Andershed, New York, NY: Springer, 2012, p. 167-183Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Until recently, boys and men provided the template by which problem behaviors in girls and women were measured. With the shift to studying female development and adjustment through female perspectives comes a need for knowledge of trajectories of at-risk girls’ behavior as they mature. Girls at Risk: Swedish Longitudinal Research on Adjustment fills this gap accessibly and compassionately. Its lifespan approach relates the pathologies of adolescence to later outcomes as girls grow up to have relationships, raise families, and take on adult roles in society.

Coverage is balanced between internalizing behaviors, traditionally considered to be more common among females, and externalizing ones, more common among males. The book's detailed review of findings includes several major longitudinal studies of normative and clinical populations, and the possibility of early maturation as a risk factor for pathology is discussed in depth. Contributors not only emphasize "what works" in intervention and prevention but also identify emerging issues in assessment and treatment. An especially powerful concluding chapter raises serious questions about how individuals in the healing professions perceive their mission, and their clients. Although the studies are from one country—Sweden—the situations, and their potential for successful intervention, transcend national boundaries, including:

    • Adolescent and adult implications of pubertal timing. • Eating disorders and self-esteem. • Prevention of depressive symptoms. • Understanding violence in girls with substance problems. • Lifespan continuity in female aggression and violence. • A life-course perspective in girls' criminality.

With insights beyond the beaten path, Girls at Risk provides a wealth of information for researchers, clinicians and related professionals, and graduate students in child and school psychology; psychiatry; education; social work; psychotherapy and counseling; and public health.

Våld i nära relationer - att lyssna till berättelser om responser på våldet2012In: Viktimologisk forskning / [ed] Anita Heber, Eva Tiby, Sofia Wikman, Lund: Studentlitteratur, 2012, 1, p. 95-116Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Listening to the children´s experiences of being participant witnesses to domestic violence2010In: Social Work and child welfare politics: Through Nordic lenses / [ed] Hannele Forsberg & Teppo Kröger, Bristol, UK: Polity Press, 2010, p. 129-146Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Children and families are at the heart of social work all over the world, but, until now Nordic perspectives have been rare in the body of English-language child welfare literature. Is there something that makes child welfare ideas and practices that are in use in the Nordic countries characteristically 'Nordic'? If so, what kinds of challenges do the current globalization trends pose for Nordic child welfare practices, especially for social work with children and families? Covering a broad range of child welfare issues, this edited collection provides examples of Nordic approaches to child welfare, looking at differences between Nordic states as well as the similarities. It considers, and critically examines, the particular features of the Nordic welfare model - including universal social care services that are available to all citizens and family policies that promote equality and individuality - as a resource for social work with children and families. Drawing on contemporary research and debates from different Nordic countries, the book examines how social work and child welfare politics are produced and challenged as both global and local ideas and practices."Social work and child welfare politics" is aimed at academics and researchers in social work, childhood studies, children's policy and social policy, as well as social work practitioners, policy makers and service providers, all over the world who are interested in Nordic experiences of providing care and welfare for families with children.

    Abstract [sv]

Children’s actions when experiencing domestic violence2009In: Childhood, ISSN 0907-5682, E-ISSN 1461-7013, Vol. 16, no 4, p. 479-496Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is, by analysing childrens discourses, to investigate their actions or absence of actions during a domestic violence episode. The empirical data are recorded group therapy sessions and individual interviews with children who have grown up experiencing their fathers violence against their mothers. The analysis shows that the childrens stories contain two aspects of actions: one related to the actions during the ongoing episode, and one the child perceives as possible/desirable for the future. The findings are discussed in the light of Lazarus and Folkmans theory of coping.

    Abstract [en]

This collection of essays examines the interrelations between illness, disability, health, society, and culture. The contributors examine how "narratives" have emerged and been utilized within these areas to help those who have experienced d injury, disability, dementia, pain, grief, or psychological trauma to express their stories. Encompassing clinical case studies, ethnographic field studies and autobiographical case studies, Health, Illness and Culture offers a broad overview and critical analysis of the present state of "illness narratives" within the fields of health and social welfare.

    Abstract [en]

Examining narrative methods in the context of its multi-disciplinary social science origins, this text looks at its theoretical underpinnings, while retaining an emphasis on the process of doing narrative research. The authors provide a comprehensive guide to narrative methods, taking the reader from initial decisions about forms of narrative analysis, through more complex issues of reflexivity, interpretation and the research context.

The contributions included here clearly demonstrate the value of narrative methods for contemporary social research and practice. This book will be invaluable for all social science postgraduate students and researchers looking to use narrative methods in their own research

Om den svåra konsten att lyssna till berättelser2008In: Narrativa metoder i socialt arbete, Lund: Studentlitteratur , 2008, 1, p. 85-110Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Applying Narrative Analysis to the Process of Confirming or Disregarding Cases of Suspected Sexual Abuse2005In: Child & Family Work, ISSN 1356-7500, Vol. 10, no 1, p. 57-65Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses discourse about sexual abuse at a detention home for young women. At the centre of attention is staff members' struggle with the process of confirming or disregarding cases of alleged sexual abuse. The determining factor for establishing an act as sexual abuse was whether or not the act involved a person who was defined as a victim. A core issue in the process was an evaluation of the credibility of the alleged abused girl and the degree of consent. The unintended result was that many of the girls' narratives were never confirmed. The article argues that there is no objective 'given' regarding the definition of sexual abuse. To be involved in the process of understanding and establishing an act as sexual abuse means being involved in a process of social definition. To be able to handle such involvement constitutes a fundamental professional issue in social work. Adopting a narrative approach to the process of confirming or disregarding cases of suspected sexual abuse shifts the focus from developing categories of social problems and work on the basis of them to developing ways of listening to young people and allowing their narratives to provide a point of departure.

    Abstract [en]

To be assaulted is to be subjected to an illegal action and confronted with one's own helplessness and powerlessness. It also requires confronting one's own actions, aimed at protection and resistance. This article examines the relationships between male violence and female resistance by focusing on agency, i.e. the relationships between power, responsibility and activity as reflected in the various ways battered women positioned themselves in their narratives of leaving. Three basic positions were identified casting the victimized woman as: Wounded, Self-blaming, or Bridge-building. These positions are associated with relational themes such as vulnerability, isolation and connectedness. The overall message of the article is to urge feminists to return to the roots of feminist theorizing of men's violence towards women, and to include women's strategies of resisting the violence in that theorizing

The Focus Group Method as an In-depth Method?: Young Women Talking About Sexuality2005In: International Journal of Social Research Methodology, ISSN 1364-5579, E-ISSN 1464-5300, Vol. 8, no 4, p. 331-344Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses whether the focus group method can be employed with troubled groups and for the discussion of high-involvement topics. It analyses focus groups' discourse of high-involvement topics, such as 'the body', 'relationships', and 'sexuality', conducted with female adolescents aged 15-20 years at a detention home. Contrary to the traditional belief that the focus group method is designed for low-involvement topics and mainstream groups, our analyses of the discursive devices employed suggest that the method can indeed be used for high-involvement topics. We also argue that other methods would not have given us 'deeper' insights and that the focus group method can be seen as a less intrusive method to be used in this setting.
