A Historical Overview: Care and Education Intersecting with Status and Class in Swedish Childminder Education 1975-20112015In: Nordisk Barnehageforskning, ISSN 1890-9167, E-ISSN 1890-9167, Vol. 9, no 3, p. 1-16Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

From a perspective of status and class, this paper delineates changes in Swedish childminder education. The data are policy documents, documents from childminder training, and interviews with educators. The analysis is informed by post-structural theory. The study shows that the status of the childminder program has shifted between high and low status, and led toward differently classed life trajectories at different times. One reason for these variations is that the emphasis in childcare has shifted from care to teaching. This has at times increased the status of the education and the vocation, but also subverted the demand for childminders.

We have to make horseriding more masculine!: On the difference between mascuine needs and feminine practices in the context of Swedish equestrian sports2013In: Gender and Equestrian Sport: Riding around the world / [ed] Adelman, Miriam & Jorge Knijnik, Dordrecht: Springer Netherlands, 2013, p. 149-164Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This volume brings together studies from various disciplines of the social sciences and humanities ( anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, history and literary theory) that shed light on the equestrian world as a historically gendered and highly dynamic field of contemporary sport and culture.  From high level international dressage and jumping, polo and the turf, to the rodeo world of the Americas and popular forms of equestrian sport and culture, we are introduced to a range of  issues that  are played out at local and global, national and international levels. Students and scholars of gender, culture and sport  will find much of interest in this original look at contemporary issues such as "engendered" (women's and men's) identities/subjectivities as equestrians, representations of girls, horses and the world of adventure in juvenile fiction;  the current "feminization" of particular equestrian activities (and where boys and men stand in relation to this);  how broad forms of social inequality and stratification play themselves out within gendered equestrian contexts; men and women and their relation to horses within the framework of current discussions on the relation of animals to humans (which may  include not only love and care, but also exploitation and violence), among others.  Singular contributions  show how equestrian activities contribute to historical and current constructions of embodied "femininities" and "masculinities", reflecting a world that has been moving "beyond the binaries" while continuing to be enmeshed in their persistent and contradictory legacy.

Gender in equestrian sports: An issue of difference and equality2012In: Sports in Society: Cultures, Commerce, Media, Politics, ISSN 1743-0437, Vol. 15, no 3, p. 335-348Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on how the practitioners are constructed and positioned within the gender order of the equestrian sports. The purpose of this study is to show how the Swedish Equestrian Federation through their membership journal creates a field in which both equality and difference exist. Based on discourse and media analyses, both texts and images are used in order to analyse representations of femininity and masculinity. Equestrian sports are theorized as a culture of knowledge, influenced by its history. Despite formal equality in competition situations, there is a gender order in which the privilege of interpretation and the representation of knowledge are rooted in a male perspective, and those being taught are women. But there is a sense of ambivalence, and an apparent need to negotiate the femininity of the horse girl. She is represented as caring as well as brave, energetic and with leadership abilities in a less conventional manner.

Var så god och led!: Fostran och genus i stallmiljö och ridsport2012In: Fostran av framtidens medborgare: Normer och praktiker bortom välfärdsstaten / [ed] Kenneth Petersson, Magnus Dahlstedt och Birgitta Plymoth, Lund: Sekel , 2012, 1, p. 19-36Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The Working Mother in Early Swedish Social Policy2005In: Welfare Politics Cross-Examined: eclecticist analytical perspectives on Sweden and the developed world from the 1880s to the 2000s / [ed] Eero Carroll and Lena Eriksson, Amsterdam: Aksant Academic Publishers , 2005, p. 149-178Chapter in book (Other academic)
