Digital Twins for Ports: Derived From Smart City and Supply Chain Twinning Experience2023Ingår i: IEEE Access, E-ISSN 2169-3536, Vol. 11, s. 71777-71799Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Ports are striving for innovative technological solutions to cope with the ever-increasing growth of transport, while at the same time improving their environmental footprint. An emerging technology that has the potential to substantially increase the efficiency of the multifaceted and interconnected port processes is the digital twin. Although digital twins have been successfully integrated in many industries, there is still a lack of cross-domain understanding of what constitutes a digital twin. Furthermore, the implementation of the digital twin in complex systems such as the port is still in its infancy. This paper attempts to fill this research gap by conducting an extensive cross-domain literature review of what constitutes a digital twin, keeping in mind the extent to which the respective findings can be applied to the port. It turns out that the digital twin of the port is most comparable to complex systems such as smart cities and supply chains, both in terms of its functional relevance as well as in terms of its requirements and characteristics. The conducted literature review, considering the different port processes and port characteristics, results in the identification of three core requirements of a digital port twin, which are described in detail. These include situational awareness, comprehensive data analytics capabilities for intelligent decision making, and the provision of an interface to promote multi-stakeholder governance and collaboration. Finally, specific operational scenarios are proposed on how the ports digital twin can contribute to energy savings by improving the use of port resources, facilities and operations.

Construction related urban disturbances: Identification and linking with an IoT-model2022Ingår i: Automation in Construction, ISSN 0926-5805, E-ISSN 1872-7891, Vol. 134, artikel-id 104038Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

While being a significant part of the urban development, construction projects disturb different stakeholders in various ways. There are three problems associated with construction disturbances: (i) most of these disturbances are not recognised by the people causing them, (ii) they are not monitored and (iii) if they are to be monitored, data is spread among stakeholders. This paper defines what a disturbance is, presents a list of disturbances, linking disturbances to stakeholders and, categorising them based on their distance from construction sites (responding to (i)). Next, a IoT domain model is developed, demonstrating how IoT in construction needs to be combined with the sensors of smart cities to capture the primitives of these disturbances (responding to (iii)). This is a first step towards enabling large-scale data-gathering of construction transport disturbances (responding to (ii)), which is a necessity to predict them and allow better construction transport planning to decrease disturbances.

Störningsfri stad: slutrapport i projektet Visualiserad byggtrafikplanering för en störningsfri stadsutveckling2022Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

The role of sensors in the production of smart city spaces2022Ingår i: Big Data and Society, ISSN 2053-9517, E-ISSN 2053-9517, Vol. 9, nr 2, artikel-id 20539517221110218Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Smart cities build on the idea of collecting data about the city in order for city administration to be operated more efficiently. Within a research project gathering an interdisciplinary team of researchers ? engineers, designers, gender scholars and human geographers ? we have been working together using participatory design approaches to explore how paying attention to the diversity of human needs may contribute to making urban spaces comfortable and safe for more people. The project team has deployed sensors collecting data on air quality, sound and mobility in a smart city testbed in Norrköping, Sweden. While these sensors are meant to capture an accurate ?map? of the street and what is going on along it, our interdisciplinary conversations around the sensors have revealed the heterogeneity both of smart city planning and spatial formulations of the city. The discussions have given rise to questions regarding the work that goes into constructing the sensor box itself, as well as the work of deploying it, and how these influence the ?map? that the sensors produce. In this paper, we draw on Lefebvre to explore how the sensors themselves produce smart spaces. We analyze how the box depends on perceived space to function (e.g. requiring electricity), and simultaneously it produces conceptualizations of space that are influenced by the materiality of the box itself (e.g. sensors being affected by heat and noise). Further, we explore how the (in)visibility of sensor technology influences lived space.

    Usage of V2X Applications in Road Tunnels2022Ingår i: Applied Sciences, E-ISSN 2076-3417, Vol. 12, nr 9, artikel-id 4624Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Featured Application This article provides a general overview of technological aspects and limitations of tunnels with respect to smart technologies such as C-ITS. Many smart city applications work with calculated position and time using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals for enhanced precision. However, there are many places where the availability of GNSS is limited, e.g., road tunnels, which are an essential part of transport infrastructure. Tunnels also require greater attention and greater importance of approaches to ensure the safety and security aspects of traffic. The safety, distribution of information, awareness, and smooth traffic can also be ensured by V2X applications, but the current position is also needed. An experimental analysis of data connection and communication availability was performed in the Blanka tunnel (Prague) and its surroundings. The main objective of the work was to find and clearly describe the tunnel blind spots, with an emphasis on communication between cars and potentially between cars and infrastructure. This article summarizes the evaluation results of the V2X tunnel experimental test, the outputs from the analysis of these blind spots, and it provides a future perspective and suggestions that make tunnels smart by using advanced positioning approaches.

A wireless caching helper system with heterogeneous traffic and random availability2021Ingår i: EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, ISSN 1687-1472, E-ISSN 1687-1499, Vol. 2021, nr 1, artikel-id 69Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Multimedia content streaming from Internet-based sources emerges as one of the most demanded services by wireless users. In order to alleviate excessive traffic due to multimedia content transmission, many architectures (e.g., small cells, femtocells, etc.) have been proposed to offload such traffic to the nearest (or strongest) access point also called "helper". However, the deployment of more helpers is not necessarily beneficial due to their potential of increasing interference. In this work, we evaluate a wireless system which can serve both cacheable and non-cacheable traffic. More specifically, we consider a general system in which a wireless user with limited cache storage requests cacheable content from a data center that can be directly accessed through a base station. The user can be assisted by a pair of wireless helpers that exchange non-cacheable content as well. Files not available from the helpers are transmitted by the base station. We analyze the system throughput and the delay experienced by the cached user and show how these performance metrics are affected by the packet arrival rate at the source helper, the availability of caching helpers, the caches parameters, and the users request rate by means of numerical results.

Modeling uncertain task compliance in dispatch of volunteers to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients2021Ingår i: Computers & industrial engineering, ISSN 0360-8352, E-ISSN 1879-0550, Vol. 159, artikel-id 107515Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In countries such as Sweden, Italy, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, projects in which volunteers are dispatched to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) patients with the use of mobile phones exist. Once an OHCA case is reported, a notification is sent to the mobile phones of registered volunteers that are in the vicinity of the patient. These projects mostly use static dispatch methods to determine which volunteers should be sent directly to the patient and which ones should pick up an automatic external defibrillator (AED). However, such schemes do not consider uncertainties associated with these task assignment decisions (e.g., if volunteers will do as instructed, or do something else). In this paper, we propose a method for optimized task assignment and dispatch of volunteers to OHCA patients that considers the uncertainty related to volunteers actions once assigned a task. We then compare the results of our method to those of a static dispatch method used in an ongoing mobile phone volunteer dispatch project in Sweden and validate them using simulation. Furthermore, we perform a sensitivity analysis on several parameters to investigate their effect on the performance of the proposed method. With the comparative results we show that the proposed method may help increase the survivability of OHCA patients.

The Age of Information in a Discrete Time Queue: Stationary Distribution and Non-Linear Age Mean Analysis2021Ingår i: IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, ISSN 0733-8716, E-ISSN 1558-0008, Vol. 39, nr 5, s. 1352-1364Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this work, we investigate information freshness in a status update communication system consisting of a source-destination link. Initially, we study the properties of a sample path of the age of information (AoI) process at the destination. We obtain a general formula of the stationary distribution of the AoI, under the assumption of ergodicity. We relate this result to a discrete time queueing system and provide a general expression of the generating function of AoI in relation with the system time and the peak age of information (PAoI) metric. Furthermore, we consider three different single-server system models and we obtain closed-form expressions of the generating functions and the stationary distributions of the AoI and the PAoI. The first model is a first-come-first-served (FCFS) queue, the second model is a preemptive last-come-first-served (LCFS) queue, and the last model is a bufferless system with packet dropping. We build upon these results to provide a methodology for analyzing general non-linear age functions for this type of systems, using representations of functions as power series.

Cacheable and Non-Cacheable Traffic Interplay in a Relay-Assisted Wireless Network2020Ingår i: ICC 2020 - 2020 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2020Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We study a discrete-time wireless network that serves both cacheable and non-cacheable traffic with assistance of a relay node with storage capabilities for both types of traffic. We investigate how allocating the storage capacity to cacheable and non-cacheable traffic affects the network throughput. Our numerical results provide useful insights by varying not only the allocation of cacheable to non-cacheable storage but also the rate by which non-cacheable content is transmitted, the rate by which cacheable content is requested, as well as different popularity distributions of the cached files.

Sustainability means inclusivity: Engaging citizens in early stage smart city development2020Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2020 IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY (ISTAS), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2020, s. 413-416Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The challenge of how cities can be designed and developed in an inclusive and sustainable direction is monumental. Smart city technologies currently offer the most promising solution for long-term sustainability. However, smart city projects have been criticised for ignoring diverse needs of the local population and increasing social divides. A sustainable urban environment depends as much on creating an inclusive space that is safe, accessible and comfortable for a diverse group of citizens as it does on deploying "smart" technologies for energy efficiency or environmental protection. This is because citizens will be more likely to adopt technologies promoting sustainability if they are well-aligned with their lived needs and experiences. In this paper, we present the rationale behind an ongoing interdisciplinary research project that aims to address exactly the problem outlined above by using a participatory design approach. Focusing on a smart city test site in Sweden where sensors are currently being deployed to collect data on noise, particles, vehicle numbers and types (amongst other), the goal is to bring local residents and government representatives into dialogue with technical developers by adopting a "meet-in-the-middle" approach. This paper comprises a brief presentation of early findings and a reflection on this approach.

The Cost of Delay in Status Updates and Their Value: Non-Linear Ageing2020Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications, ISSN 0090-6778, E-ISSN 1558-0857, Vol. 68, nr 8, s. 4905-4918Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We consider a status update communication system consisting of a source-destination link. A stochastic process is observed at the source, where samples are extracted at random time instances, and delivered to the destination, thus, providing status updates for the source. In this paper, we expand the concept of information ageing by introducing the cost of update delay (CoUD) metric to characterize the cost of having stale information at the destination. The CoUD captures the freshness of the information at the destination and can be used to reflect the information structure of the source. Moreover, we introduce the value of information of update (VoIU) metric that captures the reduction of CoUD upon reception of an update. Using the CoUD, its by-product metric called peak cost of update delay (PCoUD), and the VoIU, we evaluate the performance of an M/M/1 system in various settings that consider exact expressions and bounds. The optimal server utilization policy is to minimize the time average CoUD and maximize the time average VoIU. Our results indicate that the performance of CoUD differs depending on the cost assigned per time unit, however the optimal policy remains the same for linear ageing and varies for non-linear ageing. When it comes to the VoIU the performance difference appears only when the cost increases non-linearly with time. The study illustrates the importance of the newly introduced variants of age, furthermore supported in the case of VoIU by its tractability.

Age of Information Performance of Multiaccess Strategies with Packet Management2019Ingår i: Journal of Communications and Networks, ISSN 1229-2370, E-ISSN 1976-5541, Vol. 21, nr 3, s. 244-255Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We consider a system consisting of N source nodes communicating with a common receiver. Each source node has a buffer of infinite capacity to store incoming bursty traffic in the form of status updates transmitted in packets, which should maintain the status information at the receiver fresh. Packets waiting for transmission can be discarded to avoid wasting network resources for the transmission of stale information. We investigate the age of information (AoI) performance of the system under scheduled and random access. Moreover, we present analysis of the AoI with and without packet management at the transmission queue of the source nodes, where as packet management we consider the capability to replace unserved packets at the queue whenever newer ones arrive. Finally, we provide simulation results that illustrate the impact of the network operating parameters on the age performance of the different access protocols.

    Device-to-Device Based Inter-Cell Interference Coordination for Delay-Sensitive 5G Networks2019Ingår i: ERCIM News, ISSN 0926-4981, E-ISSN 1564-0094, nr 117, s. 22-23Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Heterogeneous 5G networks that consist of dense deployment of macro base stations, small base stations and device-to-device communications play a central role in improving the spectral efficiency and the delay performance of real-time applications. Enhanced inter-cell interference coordination based on time-domain coordination mitigates the downlink interference at the small base station users equipment but degrades the delay performance of the macro base station users equipment. In this work we exploit the inactive users equipment to serve as relays between the small base station and the macro base station users equipment which ensures that the delay requirements of real time users are achieved.

Optimal Dispatch of Volunteers to Out-of-hospital Cardiac Arrest Patients2019Ingår i: Proceedings of the 52nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS), Hawaii, USA, 8th-11th January 2019, University of Hawai'i at Manoa , 2019, s. 4088-4097Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Initiatives with mobile phone dispatched volunteers to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) cases, can be found today in some countries, e.g. Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy. When an OHCA case is reported, an alarm is sent to the registered volunteers’ phones. However, the allocation of which volunteers to send to the automatic external defibrillator (AED) and who to send directly to the patient, is today based on simple rules of thumb. In this paper, we propose a model to optimally select how many and which volunteers to send directly to the patient, and who should pick up and deliver an AED. The results show that the model can help increase the survivability of the patients, compared to simple decision rules.

Performance Evaluation of Wireless Caching Helper Systems2019Ingår i: 2019 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WIRELESS AND MOBILE COMPUTING, NETWORKING AND COMMUNICATIONS (WIMOB), IEEE , 2019Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this work, we evaluate a wireless system in which we distinguish between cacheable and non-cacheable traffic. More specifically, we consider a general system in which a wireless user with limited cache storage requests cacheable content from a data center that can be directly accessed through a base station. The user can be assisted by a pair of wireless helpers that exchange non-cacheable content. Packets arrive at the queue of the source helper in bursts. Each helper has its own caches to assist the users requests for cacheable content. Files not available from the helpers are transmitted by the base station. We analyze the system throughput and the delay experienced by the user and show how they are affected by the packet arrival rate at the source helper, the availability of caching helpers, the caches parameters, and the users request rate by means of numerical results.

We consider a system consisting of a source-destination communication link. At the transmitter of the source there is a buffer that stores packets containing status information. These randomly generated packets should keep the destination timely updated and they can be discarded to avoid wasting network resources for the transmission of stale information. In this setup, we provide an analysis of the age of information (AoI) and peak age of information (PAoI) performance of the system, with and without packet management at the transmission queue of the source node. The analysis indicates the potential performance gains obtained with the use of packet management.

    Virtual Network Functions Scheduling under Delay-Weighted Pricing2019Ingår i: IEEE Networking Letters, E-ISSN 2576-3156, Vol. 1, nr 4, s. 160-163Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We consider a cost minimization problem for High Volume Servers (HVS) equipped with Virtual Machines (VMs) to serve Virtual Network Functions (VNF) demands for resources. Given a scheduling period, a central scheduler decides which VM to use for each VNF demand. Each VM can be activated or disabled with different costs. Each VNF has a delay-weighted pricing function to indicate its completion time tolerance. We prove the NP-completeness of the problem and develop an algorithm based on Lagrangian relaxation and subgradient optimization to deal with this computational complexity. Finally, our numerical results demonstrate our algorithm’s effectiveness compared to two benchmarks.

Age of Information and Throughput in a Shared Access Network with Heterogeneous Traffic2018Ingår i: IEEE Global Telecommunications Conference (GLOBECOM), 2018, pp. 1-6., 2018Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We consider a cognitive shared access scheme consisting of a high priority primary node and a low priority network with N secondary nodes accessing the spectrum. Assuming bursty traffic at the primary node, saturated queues at the secondary nodes, and multipacket reception capabilities at the receivers, we derive analytical expressions of the time average age of information of the primary node and the throughput of the secondary nodes. We formulate two optimization problems, the first aiming to minimize the time average age of information of the primary node subject to an aggregate secondary throughput requirement. The second problem aims to maximize the aggregate secondary throughput of the network subject to a maximum time average staleness constraint. Our results provide guidelines for the design of a multiple access system with multipacket reception capabilities that fulfills both timeliness and throughput requirements.

Dynamic Power Control for Packets with Deadlines2018Ingår i: 2018 IEEE GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE (GLOBECOM), IEEE , 2018Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Wireless devices need to adapt their transmission power according to the fluctuating wireless channel in order to meet constraints of delay sensitive applications. In this paper, we consider delay sensitivity in the form of strict packet deadlines arriving in a transmission queue. Packets missing the deadline while in the queue are dropped from the system. We aim at minimizing the packet drop rate under average power constraints. We utilize tools from Lyapunov optimization to find an approximate solution by selecting power allocation. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm and show that it achieves the same performance in terms of packet drop rate with that of the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) when the available power is sufficient. However, our algorithm outperforms EDF regarding the trade-off between packet drop rate and average power consumption.

Improving the Spectral Efficiency in Dense Heterogeneous Networks Using D2D-Assisted eICIC2018Ingår i: 2018 IEEE 23rd International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2018, s. 32-37Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Heterogeneous networks (HetNets) that consist of macro base stations (MBSs) and small base stations (SBSs) are a key architectural drive for achieving the high spectral efficiency (SE) in 5G and beyond. Moreover, device-to-device (D2D) communications underlaying mobile networks can provide reliable communications and add SE gains. A major challenge in HetNets is the inter-cell interference (ICI) due to the coexistence of multiple tiers of base stations (BSs). To tackle this challenge, the enhanced inter-cell interference coordination (eICIC) scheme was adopted by 3GPP. In eICIC the MBSs mute their transmission during the so-called ᅵalmost blank subframesᅵ (ABS). This muting strategy causes resources reduction to the MBS users (MUEs). We propose the use of D2D communications to forward the transmission from the SBS to the MUEs during ABS subframes, by using inactive UEs to relay the downlink transmission, when the destination UEs are outside the coverage of the BS. We use a heuristic resource allocation (RA) algorithm based on the traffic load at the SBSs that integrates eICIC with D2D communications to avoid the service degradation during the time-domain muting. Simulation results of a HetNet with D2D-eICIC show that the SE of our approach outperforms other interference management approaches.

Secure Communications for the Two-user Broadcast Channel with Random Traffic2018Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security, ISSN 1556-6013, E-ISSN 1556-6021, Vol. 13, nr 9, s. 2294-2309Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this work, we study the stability region of the two-user broadcast channel (BC) with bursty data arrivals and security constraints. It is assumed that one of the receivers has a secrecy constraint, i.e., its packets need to be kept secret from the other receiver, which is defined based on SINR. The receiver with secrecy constraint has full-duplex capability to send a jamming signal for improving its service rate. The stability region of the two-user BC with secrecy constraint is characterized for the general decoding case. Then, assuming two different decoding schemes the respective stability regions are derived. The fullduplex operation of receiver results in self-interference, and the effect of imperfect self-interference cancelation on the stability region is also investigated. The stability region of the BC with a secrecy constraint, where the receivers do not have full duplex capability can be obtained as a special case of the results derived in this paper. In addition, the paper considers the problem of maximizing the saturated throughput of the queue for which there is no secrecy constraint under minimum service guarantees for the other queue. The results provide new insights on the effect of the secrecy constraint on the stability region of the BC. It is found that the stability region with secrecy constraint is sensitive to the degree of self-interference cancelation.

Service Allocation in a Mobile Fog Infrastructure under Availability and QoS Constraints2018Ingår i: 2018 IEEE GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE (GLOBECOM), IEEE , 2018Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The next generation of mobile networks, namely SG, together with the Internet of Things (IoT) come with a large number of delay sensitive services. To meet their requirements, cloud services are migrating to the edge of the networks to reduce latency. The notion of fog computing, where the edge plays an active role in the execution of services, comes to meet the needs for the stringent requirements. Thus, it becomes of a high importance to address the problem of mapping services demands to infrastructure resources supply. This work addresses it taking into account the randomness of resource availability in a fog infrastructure. We introduce an integer optimization formulation to minimize the total cost under a guarantee of service execution despite the uncertainty of resources availability. Our results illustrate the effect of various system parameters, such as the diversity of the infrastructure server set, the availability of different infrastructure servers in the set, and the probability of service completion required by each service.

    Stable Throughput Region of the Two-User Broadcast Channel2018Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Communications, ISSN 0090-6778, E-ISSN 1558-0857, Vol. 66, nr 10, s. 4611-4621Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we consider the two-user broadcast channel and we characterize its stable throughput region. We start the analysis by providing the stability region for the general case without any specific considerations on transmission and reception mechanisms. We also provide conditions for the stable throughput region to be convex. Subsequently, we study the case where the transmitter uses superposition coding and we consider two special cases for the receivers. The first one is when both receivers treat interference as noise. The second is when the user with a better channel uses successive decoding and the other receiver treats interference as noise.

Throughput With Delay Constraints in a Shared Access Network With Priorities2018Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, ISSN 1536-1276, E-ISSN 1558-2248, Vol. 17, nr 9, s. 5885-5899Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we analyze a shared access network with a fixed primary node and randomly distributed secondary nodes whose spatial distribution follows a poisson point process. The secondary nodes use a random access protocol allowing them to access the channel with probabilities that depend on the queue size of the primary node. Assuming a system with multipacket reception receivers, having bursty packet arrivals at the primary and saturated traffic at the secondary nodes, our protocol can be tuned to alleviate congestion at the primary. We analyze the throughput of the secondary network and the primary average delay, as well as the impact of the secondary node access probability and transmit power. We formulate an optimization problem to maximize the throughput of the secondary network under delay constraints for the primary node; in the case of no congestion control, the optimal access probability can be provided in closed form. Our numerical results illustrate the effect of network operating parameters on the performance of the proposed priority-based shared access protocol.

Age and Value of Information: Non-linear Age Case2017Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We consider a real-time status update system consisting of a source-destination network. A stochastic process is observed at the source, and samples, so called status updates, are extracted at random time instances, and delivered to the destination. In this paper, we expand the concept of information ageing by introducing the Cost of Update Delay (CoUD) metric to characterize the cost of having stale information at the destination. We introduce the Value of Information of Update (VoIU) metric that captures the reduction of CoUD upon reception of an update. The importance of the VoIU metric lies on its tractability which enables an alternative performance criterion in status update systems.

Age of Information: A New Concept, Metric, and Tool2017Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In an increasingly networked world in which information is becoming increasingly actual, how can a system know with certainty just how fresh the information on a remote system is? Much work has been done on delay or latency in systems, but only recently has the concept of the freshness of information in or about a system become quantifiable. This is termed the Age of Information.

Age of Information provides a whole new set of metrics and tools that can be used to characterize the freshness of information in communications, control and, indeed, information systems. In its early development, this monograph provides the reader with an easy-to-read tutorial-like introduction into this novel approach of dealing with information within systems. A critical summary of the work to date details the concept for the reader. A description of the fundamentals of the performance metrics is then presented before showing how the approach can be used as a tool in improving metrics in other contexts.

The survey and tutorial nature of this monograph will save any researcher or student considerable time in understanding the basics of Age of Information, which is destined to become an important research topic in networked systems.

    Abstract [en]

Age of information (AoI) was introduced in the early 2010s as a notion to characterize the freshness of the knowledge a system has about a process observed remotely. AoI was shown to be a fundamentally novel metric of timeliness, significantly different, to existing ones such as delay and latency. The importance of such a tool is paramount, especially in contexts other than transport of information, since communication takes place also to control, or to compute, or to infer, and not just to reproduce messages of a source. This volume comes to present and discuss the first body of works on AoI and discuss future directions that could yield more challenging and interesting research.

Performance Aware Resource Allocation and Traffic Aggregation for User Slices in Wireless HetNets2017Ingår i: 2017 IEEE 22ND INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON COMPUTER AIDED MODELING AND DESIGN OF COMMUNICATION LINKS AND NETWORKS (CAMAD), IEEE , 2017Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Resource allocation and traffic aggregation is becoming a significant part of the network deployment as it is expected that operators will offer advanced services through SG systems. Scheduling procedures need to be fair but also to handle requirements set for diverse groups of users forming network slices. Heterogeneous networks will need to be controlled locally and the traffic could be split between the macro cell LTE nodes and small cell WiFi distributed access points (APs). In this work, we examine the performance of a novel optimal resource allocation algorithm while adding a new process aiming in achieving predefined throughput and delay performance for selected groups/slices of users. From the optimal resource allocation algorithm, we derive an algorithmic solution which can be applied to determine a number of network slices. The 3GPP-WLAN interworking setup evaluation shows that our proposal can be used for allocating resources to slices of users fulfilling throughput and delay requirements set by their subscription.

    Probabilistic Cooperation of a Full-Duplex Relay in Random Access Networks2017Ingår i: IEEE Access, E-ISSN 2169-3536, Vol. 5, s. 7394-7404Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we analyze the probabilistic cooperation of a full-duplex relay in a multiuser random-access network. The relay is equipped with on/off modes for the receiver and the transmitter independently. These modes are modeled as probabilities by which the receiver and the transmitter are activated. We provide analytical expressions for the performance of the relay queue, such as arrival and service rates, stability conditions, and the average queue size. We optimize the relays operation setup to maximize the network-wide throughput while, simultaneously, we keep the relays queue stable and lower the relays receptions and transmissions. Furthermore, we study the effect of the SINR threshold and the self-interference coefficient on the per-user and network-wide throughput. For low SINR threshold, we show under which circumstances it is beneficial to switch off the relay completely, or switch off the relays receiver only.

Pursuing the Potential of New Mechanisms for Performance Engineering of 5G2017Ingår i: 2017 IEEE 22ND INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON COMPUTER AIDED MODELING AND DESIGN OF COMMUNICATION LINKS AND NETWORKS (CAMAD), IEEE , 2017Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this position paper, we provide a discussion of the need for new mechanisms towards optimizing the performance of the firth generation (5G) wireless systems, and then we outline on-going research work and results in this direction. Initially we go over the recently proposed concept of network anticipation and then resource allocation, since these two themes form the core of the ACT5G research project. Then, we discuss two specific topics within the project. The first is the use of stochastic modeling for millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, which are expected to be part of 5G networks. Our modeling enables network anticipation, resulting in an estimation of the coverage probability of mmWave, including coverage with non-line-of-sight (NLOS) mmWave beams. In the second research topic, we address the use of scalable and dynamic transmission time interval (TTI) for scenarios with a mix of different traffic types. In addition, and highlight the importance of optimizing the channel and TTI allocation in this context. Numerical results of these studies are presented and discussed. Finally, we outline directions for future study.

Scheduling Services on an IoT Device Under Time-Weighted Pricing2017Ingår i: Conference Proceedings IEEE 28th Annual International Symposium on Personal, Indoor, and Mobile Radio Communications (PIMRC): Workshop on "Communications for Networked Smart Cities", IEEE conference proceedings, 2017, s. 1-5Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The emerging vision of smart cities necessitates the use of Internet of Things (IoT) network devices to implement sustainable solutions that will improve the operations of urban areas. A massive amount of smart cities services may demand allocation of computational resources, such as processing power or storage, that IoT devices offer. Within this context, we present an IoT network device comprising interfaces with one specific computational resource available. The efficient utilization of available IoT resources would improve the Quality of Service (QoS) of the IoT network that serves the smart city. All resource allocations must be completed within a given scheduling window and every service is parametrized by a pricing weight function to indicate its tolerance to be served at the beginning of the scheduling window. We propose a mathematical optimization formulation to minimize the total cost of allocating all demands within the scheduling window considering the tolerance level of each service at the same time. Moreover, we prove that the problem is computationally hard and we provide numerical results to gain insight into the impact of different pricing weight functions on the allocations’ distribution within the scheduling window.

Allocation of Heterogeneous Resources of an IoT Device to Flexible Services2016Ingår i: IEEE Internet of Things Journal, ISSN 2327-4662, Vol. 3, nr 5, s. 691-700Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices can be equipped with multiple heterogeneous network interfaces. An overwhelmingly large amount of services may demand some or all of these interfaces available resources. Herein, we present a precise mathematical formulation of assigning services to interfaces with heterogeneous resources in one or more rounds. For reasonable instance sizes, the presented formulation produces optimal solutions for this computationally hard problem. We prove the NP-completeness of the problem and develop two algorithms to approximate the optimal solution for big instance sizes. The first algorithm allocates the most demanding service requirements first, considering the average cost of interfaces resources. The second one calculates the demanding resource shares and allocates the most demanding of them first by choosing randomly among equally demanding shares. Finally, we provide simulation results giving insight into services splitting over different interfaces for both cases.

BBTM: New life for old ATM2016Ingår i: 2016 IEEE/AIAA 35TH DIGITAL AVIONICS SYSTEMS CONFERENCE (DASC), IEEE , 2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates algorithmic questions related to the possibility of managing UAV traffic with beacon-based navigation, which we dub BBTM - Beacon-Based Traffic Management. The specific problem addressed is: How to install the minimum number of beacons in a mountainous terrain to ensure connectivity among a given set of UAS terminals on the terrain? BBTM is relevant for low-cost UAVs operating in remote areas not on time-critical missions, and may also be used as a backup system for better-equipped UAS in case the precise positioning or control information is lost, spoofed or jammed. We give algorithms for the beacon tower placement and evaluate their performance both on synthetic and real-world terrain data; the experiments suggest that our solutions can be used to efficiently quantify costs of establishing direct-visibility routing networks for UAS management.

LUPMAC: A Cross-Layer MAC Technique to Improve the Age of Information Over Dense WLANs2016Ingår i: 2016 23RD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TELECOMMUNICATIONS (ICT), IEEE , 2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Age of Information (AoI) is a relatively new metric introduced to capture the freshness of a particular piece of information. While throughput and delay measurements are widely studied in the context of dense IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs (WLANs), little is known in the literature about the AoI in this context. In this work we study the effects on the average AoI and its variance when a sensor node is immersed in a dense IEEE 802.11 WLAN. We also introduce a new cross layer MAC technique, called Latest UPdate MAC (LUPMAC), aimed at modifying the existing IEEE 802.11 in order to minimize the average AoI at the receiver end. This technique lets the MAC layer keep only the most up to date packets of a particular piece of information in the buffer. We show, through simulation, that this technique achieves significant advantages in the case of a congested dense IEEE 802.11 WLAN, and it is resilient to changes in the variance of the total network delay.

On the Resilient Network Design of Free Space Optical Wireless Network for Cellular Backhauling2016Ingår i: Optical Wireless Communications / [ed] Murat Uysal, Carlo Capsoni, Zabih Ghassemlooy, Anthony Boucouvalas, Eszter Udvary, Springer, 2016, s. 485-510Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

With the densification of nodes in cellular networks, free space optics (FSO) connections are becoming an appealing low cost and high rate alternative to copper and fiber backhaul solutions for wireless communication systems. To en- sure a reliable cellular backhaul, provisions for redundant, disjoint paths between the nodes must be made in the design phase. This chapter aims at finding a cost- effective solution to upgrade the cellular backhaul with pre-deployed optical fibers using FSO links and mirror components. A novel integer linear programming model to approach optimal FSO backhaul design, guaranteeing K-disjoint paths connecting each node pair is presented. Next, a column generation method to a path-oriented mathematical formulation is developed. Applying the method in a sequential man- ner enables high computational scalability. Realistic scenarios are used to demon- strate the proposed approaches which efficiently provide optimal or near-optimal solutions, and thereby allow for accurately dealing with the trade-off between cost and reliability.

Polynomial Complexity Minimum-Time Scheduling in a Class of Wireless Networks2016Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems, E-ISSN 2325-5870, Vol. 3, nr 3, s. 322-331Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We consider a wireless network with a set of transmitter-receiver pairs, or links, that share a common channel, and address the problem of emptying finite traffic volume from the transmitters in minimum time. This, so called, minimum-time scheduling problem has been proved to be NP-hard in general. In this paper, we study a class of minimum-time scheduling problems in which the link rates have a particular structure. We show that global optimality can be reached in polynomial time and derive optimality conditions. Then we consider a more general case in which we apply the same approach and obtain an approximation as well as lower and upper bounds to the optimal solution. Simulation results confirm and validate our approach.

Stability Region of Two-user Full-duplex Broadcast Channel with Secrecy Constraint2016Ingår i: 2016 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC), IEEE , 2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this work, the stability region of the broadcast channel (BC) is explored, where the receiver, for which the packets need to be kept secret from the other receiver has full-duplex (FD) capability. The effect of self-interference on the stability region has also been investigated. In particular, the stability region is characterized under two types of decoding schemes: (a) both the receivers perform treating interference as noise and (b) receiver with full-duplex capability performs successive decoding and other receiver treats interference as noise. As a by product of the analysis, the stability region of the BC with secrecy constraint where the receivers do not have FD capability can be obtained as a special case of the results derived in this paper. It is found that if the self-interference cancelation at the full-duplex receiver is not efficient, then the gain obtained in secure throughput due to transmission of the jamming signal by the FD receiver can diminish. In particular, it is found that the stability region with secrecy constraint is sensitive to the coefficient of self-interference cancelation under certain cases.

Throughput Analysis of Smart Objects with Delay Constraints2016Ingår i: 2016 IEEE 17TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON A WORLD OF WIRELESS, MOBILE AND MULTIMEDIA NETWORKS (WOWMOM), IEEE , 2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we analyze a shared access network with one primary device and randomly distributed smart objects with secondary priority. Assuming random traffic at the primary device and saturated queues at the smart objects with secondary priority, an access protocol is employed to adjust the random access probabilities of the smart objects depending on the congestion level of the primary. We characterize the maximum throughput of the secondary network with respect to delay constraints on the primary. Our results highlight the impact of system design parameters on the delay and throughput behavior of the shared access network with massive number of connected objects.

Age of Information of Multiple Sources with Queue Management2015Ingår i: 2015 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS (ICC), IEEE , 2015, s. 5935-5940Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We consider a system of multiple sources generating status update packets, which need to be sent by a single transmitter to a destination over a network. In the model we study, the packet generation time may vary at each source, and the packets go through the network with a random delay. Each update carries a time stamp of its generation, allowing the destination to calculate for each source the so called Age of Information, which measures the timeliness of each status update arriving. Considering that queuing delay can unnecessarily increase the age of a critical status update, we propose here a queue management technique, in which we maintain a queue with only the latest status packet of each source, overwriting any previously queued update from that source. This simple technique drastically limits the need for buffering and can be applied in systems where the history of source status is not relevant. We show that this scheme results in significantly less transmissions compared to the standard M/M/1 queue model. Furthermore, the proposed technique reduces the per source age of information, especially in settings not using queue management with high status update generation rates.

An IoT based Intelligent Building Management System for Ambient Assisted Living2015Ingår i: 2015 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATION WORKSHOP, IEEE , 2015, s. 246-252Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) describes an ICT based environment that exposes personalized and context-aware intelligent services, thus creating an appropriate experience to the end user to support independent living and improvement of the everyday quality of life of both healthy elderly and disabled people. The social and economic impact of AAL systems have boosted the research activities that combined with the advantages of enabling technologies such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Internet of Things (IoT) can greatly improve the performance and the efficiency of such systems. Sensors and actuators inside buildings can create an intelligent sensing environments that help gather realtime data for the patients, monitor their vital signs and identify abnormal situations that need medical attention. AAL applications might be life critical and therefore have very strict requirements for their performance with respect to the reliability of the devices, the ability of the system to gather data from heterogeneous devices, the timeliness of the data transfer and their trustworthiness. This work presents the functional architecture of SOrBet (Marie Curie IAPP project) that provides a framework for interconnecting efficiently smart devices, equipping them with intelligence that helps automating many of the everyday activities of the inhabitants. SOrBet is a paradigm shift of traditional AAL systems based on a hybrid architecture, including both distributed and centralized functionalities, extensible, self-organising, robust and secure, built on the concept of "reliability by design", thus being capable of meeting the strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of demanding applications such as AAL.

    Abstract [en]

In this work, we investigate the operation of energy efficient relay nodes assisting the transmission of packets from a number of users to a destination node. We study the impact of switching randomly a fraction of the relays on and off to the aggregate throughput, the average queue size and delay per packet of systems with relays transmitting in either Full-or Half-Duplex mode and under different channel transmissions characteristics. Furthermore, we prove analytically and illustrate via simulation means how these network metrics are affected.

Distributed adaptive scheme for reliable data collection in fault tolerant WSNs2015Ingår i: Internet of Things (WF-IoT), 2015 IEEE 2nd World Forum on, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2015, s. 116-121Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Reliable data packet transfer is an essential facet of quality of service in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). WSNs require pertinent and reliable data collection schemes to provide dependable information. We analyze the factors that affect reliability, and design efficient combinations of the possible options. While many researchers have tackled this issue by focusing on particular layers of the embedded communication stack (e.g., Medium Access Control (MAC) or routing layer), we propose a layer-independent transmission rate adaptive scheme, where no additional control messages are required. We focus on packet loss avoidance along prone-to-failure paths to the sink with the main objective being the efficient queue management of a sensor node. Based on certain factors (e.g., application or queue requirements) nodes will consequently take adjustment decisions. Our thorough simulation experiments demonstrate that DRAS reduces the packet drops and improves the data collection procedure in an energy efficient manner.

Flexible allocation of heterogeneous resources to services on an IoT device2015Ingår i: 2015 IEEE Conference on Computer Communications Workshops (INFOCOM WKSHPS), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), 2015, s. 99-100Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In the Internet of Things (IoT), devices and gateways may be equipped with multiple, heterogeneous network interfaces which should be utilized by a large number of services. In this work, we model the problem of assigning services' resource demands to a device's heterogeneous interfaces and give a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) formulation for it. For meaningful instance sizes the MILP model gives optimal solutions to the presented computationally-hard problem. We provide insightful results discussing the properties of the results on the properties of the derived solutions with respect to the splitting of services to different interfaces.

Gaussian semi-Markov Model based on Real Video Multimedia Traffic2015Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Communications Communications (ICC) 2015 / [ed] IEEE, IEEE Press, 2015, s. 6971-6976Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) introduced the new radio access technology, LTE (Long Term Evolution) and LTE-Advanced, which has the capability to provide larger bandwidth and low latencies on a wireless network in order to fulfill the demand of Users' Equipment (UEs) with acceptable Quality of Service (QoS). One of the data-heavy applications that has exploded on the market is Video. This calls for accurate modeling of video traffic. To ensure the quality and correctness of complex systems with Video traffic, it is important to evaluate the behavior of the traffic in the heterogeneous environment. This paper presents measurements on LTE Video traffic which were performed in a real environment. We derived a semi-Markov model which accurately reproduces the statistics of composite Video measurements over LTE network.

    Network-level performance evaluation of a two-relay cooperative random access wireless system2015Ingår i: Computer Networks, ISSN 1389-1286, E-ISSN 1872-7069, Vol. 88, s. 187-201Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In wireless networks relay nodes can be used to assist the users transmissions to reach their destination. Work on relay cooperation, from a physical layer perspective, has up to now yielded well-known results. This paper takes a different stance focusing on network-level cooperation. Extending previous results for a single relay, we investigate here the benefits from the deployment of a second one. We assume that the two relays do not generate packets of their own and the system employs random access to the medium; we further consider slotted time and that the users have saturated queues. We obtain analytical expressions for the arrival and service rates of the queues of the two relays and the stability conditions. We investigate a model of the system, in which the users are divided into clusters, each being served by one relay, and show its advantages in terms of aggregate and throughput per user. We quantify the above, analytically for the case of the collision channel and through simulations for the case of multi-packet reception (MPR), and we provide insight on when the deployment of a second relay in the system can yield significant advantages.

Optimization of Free Space Optical Wireless Network for Cellular Backhauling2015Ingår i: IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, ISSN 0733-8716, E-ISSN 1558-0008, Vol. 33, nr 9, s. 1841-1854Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

With the densification of nodes in cellular networks, free space optic (FSO) connections are becoming an appealing low cost and high rate alternative to copper and fiber backhaul solutions for wireless communication systems. To ensure a reliable cellular backhaul, provisions for redundant disjoint paths between the nodes must be made in the design phase. This paper aims at finding a cost-effective solution to upgrade the cellular backhaul with pre-deployed optical fibers using FSO links and mirror components. Since the quality of the FSO links depends on several factors, such as transmission distance, power, and weather conditions, we adopt an elaborate formulation to calculate link reliability. We present a novel integer linear programming model to approach optimal FSO backhaul design, guaranteeing K-disjoint paths connecting each node pair. Next, we derive a column generation method to a path-oriented mathematical formulation. Applying the method in a sequential manner enables high computational scalability. We use realistic scenarios to demonstrate that our approaches efficiently provide optimal or near-optimal solutions, and thereby allow for accurately dealing with the trade-off between cost and reliability.

Enabling reliable and secure IoT-based smart city applications2014Ingår i: 2014 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communication Workshops, PERCOM WORKSHOPS 2014, IEEE Computer Society, 2014, nr 6815175, s. 111-116Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Smart Cities are considered recently as a promising solution for providing efficient services to citizens with the use of Information and Communication Technologies. With the latest advances on the Internet of Things, a new era has emerged in the Smart City domain, opening new opportunities for the development of efficient and low-cost applications that aim to improve the Quality of Life in cities. Although there is much research in this area, which has resulted in the development of many commercial products, significant parameters like reliability, security and privacy have not been considered as very important up until now. The newly launched FP7-SmartCities-2013 project RERUM aims to build upon the advances in the area of Internet of Things in Smart Cities and develop a framework to enhance reliability and security of smart city applications, with the citizen at the center of attention. This work presents four applications that will be developed within RERUM, gives a general description of the open reliability and security issues that have to be taken into account and gives an overall view of the solutions that RERUM will develop to address these issues. © 2014 IEEE.
