    Abstract [en]

    Fluorescence diagnosis may be used to improve the safety and reliability of stereotactic brain tumor biopsies using biopsy needles with integrated fiber optics. Based on 5-aminolevulinic-acid-induced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) fluorescence, vital tumor tissue can be localized in vivo during the excision procedure to reduce the number of necessary samples for a reliable diagnosis. In this study, the practical suitability of two different PpIX excitation wavelengths (405 nm, 633 nm) was investigated on optical phantoms. Violet excitation at 405 nm provides a 50-fold higher sensitivity for the bulk tumor; this factor increases up to 100 with decreasing fluorescent volume as shown by ray tracing simulations. Red excitation at 633 nm, however, is noticeably superior with regard to blood layers obscuring the fluorescence. Experimental results on the signal attenuation through blood layers of well-defined thicknesses could be confirmed by ray tracing simulations. Typical interstitial fiber probe measurements were mimicked on agarose-gel phantoms. Even in direct contact, blood layers of 20-40 µm between probe and tissue must be expected, obscuring 405-nm-excited PpIX fluorescence almost completely, but reducing the 633-nm-excited signal only by 25.5%. Thus, 633 nm seems to be the wavelength of choice for PpIX-assisted detection of high-grade gliomas in stereotactic biopsy. PpIX signal attenuation through clinically relevant blood layers for 405 nm (violet) and 633 nm (red) excitation.

    Background: Guidelines for the prevention of coronary heart disease call for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction as the primary target of treatment and reduction of triglycerides (TG) as an additional target. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the ability of atorvastatin and simvastatin to reduce LDL-C and TG concentrations and to meet 3 target lipid levels: LDL-C =2.6 mmol/L, TG =1.5 mmol/L, and both LDL-C =2.6 mmol/L and TG =1.5 mmol/L. Methods: The Treat-to-Target (3T) Study was a 52-week, multicenter, randomized, parallel-group study. Using the double-blind, double-dummy technique, adult patients aged 35 to 75 years with cardiovascular disease and dyslipidemia, defined as LDL-C concentration =4.0 mmol/L (=155 mg/dL), were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive once-daily oral treatment with 20 mg atorvastatin or 20 mg simvastatin. Fasting (12-hour) blood samples for the estimation of lipid levels and clinical laboratory values were collected after 4, 8, 12, 26, and 52 weeks. The dose was doubled after 12 weeks if the target National Cholesterol Education Program level of LDL-C (=2.6 mmol/L [100 mg/dL]) was not reached at 8 weeks. Results: The intent-to-treat analysis included 552 patients (418 men, 134 women) randomized to receive atorvastatin and 535 (404 men, 131 women) randomized to receive simvastatin. The number of patients enrolled in the study allowed the evaluation of the drugs' effects on YG. Patient demographic characteristics were similar for the 2 treatment groups, and there were no differences in baseline lipid values. Compared with simvastatin, atorvastatin produced significantly greater reductions in LDL-C (8 weeks: -46% vs -40%, P < 0.001, 52 weeks: -49% vs -44%, P < 0.001) and in YG (8 weeks: -23% vs -14%, P < 0.001, 52 weeks: -24% vs -16%, P < 0.001). Compared with simvastatin-treated patients, a significantly greater number of atorvastatin-treated patients reached the LDL-C target after 8 weeks (45% vs 24%, P < 0.001). Fewer atorvastatin patients needed to have their dose doubled, nevertheless more atorvastatin patients reached the LDL-C target after 52 weeks (61% vs 41%, P < 0.001). Both statins were well tolerated. Muscular symptoms occurred in 12 patients (2.2%) in the atorvastatin group and in 13 patients (2.4%) in the simvastatin group. Conclusions: Atorvastatin 20 or 40 mg/d for up to 1 year of treatment was significantly more effective than simvastatin 20 or 40 mg/d m reducing LDL-C and YG levels and at achieving recommended lipid targets in this selected patient population with cardiovascular disease and dyslipidemia. Both statins were well tolerated.

    Abstract [en]

    As part of a longitudinal twin study of literacy and language, we conducted a behaviour-genetic analysis of orthographic learning, spelling and decoding in Grade 2 children (225 identical and 214 fraternal twin pairs) in the United States and Australia. Each variable showed significant genetic and unique environment influences. Multivariate analyses revealed very high genetic correlations among the variables, indicating that the same genes are involved in their aetiology. These genes are partly independent of those contributing to intelligence. A further analysis indicated that the covariation between decoding and orthographic learning is mediated by shared genes rather than by a direct causal path. The authors argue that a learning parameter, most directly assessed by orthographic learning in this study, underlies all three literacy variables. The results are also discussed in relation to Share's self-teaching hypothesis, which may require modification. © United Kingdom Literacy Association 2008.

    Abstract [en]

    Cleaner production (CP) is considered as one of the most important means for manufacturing enterprises to achieve sustainable production and improve their sustainable competitive advantage. However, implementation of the CP strategy was facing barriers, such as the lack of complete data and valuable knowledge that can be employed to provide better support on decision-making of coordination and optimization on the product lifecycle management (PLM) and the whole CP process. Fortunately, with the wide use of smart sensing devices in PLM, a large amount of real-time and multi-source lifecycle big data can now be collected. To make better PLM and CP decisions based on these data, in this paper, an overall architecture of big data-based analytics for product lifecycle (BDA-PL) was proposed. It integrated big data analytics and service-driven patterns that helped to overcome the above-mentioned barriers. Under the architecture, the availability and accessibility of data and knowledge related to the product were achieved. Focusing on manufacturing and maintenance process of the product lifecycle, and the key technologies were developed to implement the big data analytics. The presented architecture was demonstrated by an application scenario, and some observations and findings were discussed in details. The results showed that the proposed architecture benefited customers, manufacturers, environment and even all stages of PLM, and effectively promoted the implementation of CP. In addition, the managerial implications of the proposed architecture for four departments were analyzed and discussed. The new CP strategy provided a theoretical and practical basis for the sustainable development of manufacturing enterprises.

    We develop the first bisimulation-based method of concept learning, called BBCL, for knowledge bases in description logics (DLs). Our method is formulated for a large class of useful DLs, with well-known DLs like ALC, SHIQ, SHOIQ, SROIQ. As bisimulation is the notion for characterizing indis-cernibility of objects in DLs, our method is natural and very promising.

    A blueprint for using commercial games off the shelf in defence training, education and research simulations2006Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    There are two types of simulations, those made for business and those made for pleasure. The underlying technology is usually the same, the difference being how and for what purpose the simulation is used. Often the two purposes can be combined. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the mutual benefit that exists between the military community and the entertainment business. These mutual benefits have only in recent years begun to be seriously explored.

    The objective of this work is to explore how to modify and use commercial video games off the shelf, in defence training, education and research. The work focuses on the process of how and what to consider when modifying commercial off the shelf games for military needs.

    The outlined blueprint is based on studies performed with combatants from the Swedish Army. To facilitate the develop­ment of the blueprint, a great number of commercial games used by military communities around the world are evaluated. These evaluations, in harmony with literature in the area, are used to develop a basic theoretical framework. The basic theoretical framework characterizes the approach and style throughout the work.

    From a general point of view, there are two overall findings; first there is an urgent need for more intuitive, pedagogical and powerful tools for preparation, management and evaluation of game-based simulation, especially since the real learning often takes place during the modification process rather the during the playing session. Second, there is a defective understanding of the differences between and purposes of a defence simulation and a game. Defence simulations focus on actions and events, while video games focus on human reactions to actions and events.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper investigates the emergence of an engineering education research (EER) community in three Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland and Sweden. First, an overview of the current state of Nordic EER authorship is produced through statistics on international publication. Then, the history of EER and its precursor activities is described in three national narratives. These national storylines are tied together in a description of recent networking activities, aiming to strengthen the EER communities on the Nordic level. Taking these three perspectives together, and drawing on concepts from community of practice theory, network theory and learning network theory, we discuss factors behind the differences in the countries, and draw some conclusions about implications for networking activities in a heterogeneous community. Further, we discuss the role of networks for affording a joint identity.

    Recent educational research has suggested that immersive multisensory virtual environments offer learners unique and exciting knowledge-building opportunities for the construction of scientific knowledge. This paper delivers a case-based study of students’ immersive interaction with electric fields around molecules in a multisensory visuohaptic virtual environment. The virtual architecture presented here also has conceptual connections to the flourishing quest in contemporary literature for the pressing need to communicate nanoscientific ideas to learners. Five upper secondary school students’ prior conceptual understanding of electric fields and their application of this knowledge to molecular contexts, were probed prior to exposure to the virtual model. Subsequently, four students interacted with the visuohaptic model while performing think-aloud tasks. An inductive and heuristic treatment of videotaped verbal and behavioural data revealed distinct interrelationships between students’ interactive strategies implemented when executing tasks in the virtual system and the nature of their conceptual knowledge deployed. The obtained qualitative case study evidence could serve as an empirical basis for informing the rendering and communication of overarching nanoscale ideas. At the time of composing this paper for publication in the current journal, the research findings of this study have been put into motion in informing a broader project goal of developing educational virtual environments for depicting nanophenomena.

    The aim of this paper is to investigate and describe the content in school rules by developing a category system of school rules, and thus making the logic behind different types of rules in school explicit. Data were derived from an ethnographic study conducted in two primary schools in Sweden. In order to analyse the data, grounded theory methodology was adapted. The analysis resulted in a category system of school rules, containing the following main categories: (a) relational rules, (b) structuring rules, (c), protecting rules, (d), personal rules and (e) etiquette rules. In the light of this categorisation, more consciously pedagogical and professional work with rules can be conducted. The category system can counteract vagueness and unreasonableness, as well as highlighting the content, logic and functions of different school rules.

    The aim of the present study was to examine and categorise teachers’ strategies for feedback in day-to-day communication in primary school. The different feedback categories constructed and grounded in data are applicable to feedback on learning and knowledge as well as on behavioural skills. Qualitative classroom observations were conducted in four primary school classrooms, including a total of four teachers and 75 students. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used throughout the analytical process. The analysis of the field data generated five main categories of feedback focuses: expecting, emotionally responding, normalising, steering, and deliberating. The categories are all broad, yet with sub-categories specific and nuanced, presenting concepts by which we can verbalize and communicate teachers’ feedback strategies.  The categories place teachers’ feedback actions in a landscape, not on a linear axis. The complexity of feedback, as it is shown in the present study challenges a dichotomisation of feedback and captures more of a complexity of classroom assessment.

    The demand for exact engineering within the life sciences is growing and the Engineering Biology programme at Linköping University, Linköping, Sweden, prepares students for a career at this interface. Conceive – Design – Implement – Operate (CDIO) was recently pioneered in an introductory project course. Groups of six to seven students apply a LIPS scalable project model from traditional engineering educational environments on, for example, a cellular imaging task in a hospital setting, prior to taking courses in cell biology/optics. Besides facilitating the implementation of CDIO in higher courses, students gain early career insight and enhance their communication skills. A customer (senior teacher) needs to visualise structures in cells, and the student group is contracted to deliver an applied and optimised method to meet specified requirements. The customer reviews deliverables before the tollgates and communicates with the student project leader. Other students are responsible for documentation and subsystems. The project is allocated laboratory facilities and hardware, and two fictitious subcontractors supply samples and consumables. Extra teachers perform supervision and methodological consultation. In summary, CDIO is indeed applicable and rewarding in cellular imaging, yet is also challenging.

    Abstract [en]

    Research has shown that bystanders more often fail to or are slower to help a victim in emergency when there are other bystanders than when there are not. The study presented in this paper is a qualitative case study with a focus on students’ own reasons why they do not help a classmate in emergency when there are other children witnessing the emergency situation in the real-life classroom case studied. Grounded theory methods were used to analyse the data. The individual conversations with the students indicated a variety of definitions of the specific distress situation when they recalled and talked about the classroom incident. During the process of the analysis seven concepts of definitions associated with passive or non-intervention bystander behaviour were constructed and grounded in the empirical material: trivialisation, dissociation, embarrassment association, busy working priority, compliance with a competitive norm, audience modelling, and responsibility transfer. Relations between these concepts of definitions were also analysed. However, this study is a first step and a first report from an ongoing study about school children as helper and bystander.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper describes an overview of a generic framework for collaboration among humans and multiple heterogeneous robotic systems based on the use of a formal characterization of delegation as a speech act. The system used contains a complex set of integrated software modules that include delegation managers for each platform, a task specification language for characterizing distributed tasks, a task planner, a multi-agent scan trajectory generation and region partitioning module, and a system infrastructure used to distributively instantiate any number of robotic systems and user interfaces in a collaborative team. The application focusses on 3D reconstruction in alpine environments intended to be used by alpine rescue teams. Two complex UAV systems used in the experiments are described. A fully autonomous collaborative mission executed in the Italian Alps using the framework is also described.

    The military emergency care education of nurses is primarily concerned with the treatment of soldiers with combat-related injuries. Even though great progress has been made in military medicine, there is still the pedagogical question of what emergency care education for military nurses should contain and how it should be taught. The aim of this study was to describe and compare experiences of training emergency care in military exercises among conscript nurses with different levels of education. A descriptive study was performed to describe and compare experiences of training emergency care in military exercises among conscript nurses with different levels of education in nursing. There were statistical differences between nurses with general nursing education and nurses with a general nursing education and supplementary education. A reasonable implication of the differences is that the curriculum must be designed differently depending on the educational background of the students. Hence, there is an interaction between background characteristics, e.g., the level of previous education and differences pertaining to clinical experience of the participants, and the impact of the exercise itself.     Background The current understanding on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in young Swedish children with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) is sparse, and therefore, research on impact of CL/P on HRQoL in children is needed.

    Aims To investigate HRQoL in 5- and 10-year-old Swedish children with CL/P in comparison with non-cleft controls. Also to analyse whether there were any differences in HRQoL between children with cleft lip (with or without cleft palate, CL ± P) and cleft palate only (CP) and/or gender differences. Design A total of 137 children with CL/P and 305 non-cleft controls participated. HRQoL was measured with KIDSCREEN-52.

    Results All children in the study exhibited HRQoL within or above the age-matched reference interval of the method with similar results in both groups; however, in the dimension ‘social support and peers’, the 10-year-old children with CL/P perceived lower HRQoL than the non-cleft controls, but it did not reach statistical significance. Type of cleft or gender did not influence HRQoL.

    Conclusions Both 5- and 10-year-old Swedish children with CL/P had HRQoL in the normal reference interval. Their general life situations were well adjusted to their clefts, but the older children with CL/P felt more excluded and less supported by peers.

    Recommendations are becoming more and more important in a world where there is an abundance of possible choices and e-commerce and content providers are featuring recommendations prominently. Recommendations based on explicit feedback, where user is giving feedback for example with ratings, has been a popular research subject. Implicit feedback recommender systems which passively collects information about the users is an area growing in interest. It makes it possible to generate recommendations based purely from a user's interactions history without requiring any explicit input from the users, which is commercially useful for a wide area of businesses. This thesis builds a recommender system based on implicit feedback using the recommendation algorithms katz-eig and link-analysis and analyzes and implements strategies for learning optimized parameters for different datasets. The resulting system forms the foundation for Comordo Technologies' commercial recommender system.

    Introduction: Physical inactivity, related lifestyle diseases and back pain are severe problems in today’s society. One way to increase physical activity level is through Motivational Interviewing (MI).

     

    Purpose: Comparing participants who were in need of MI for physical activity due to risk of heart- and coronary disease with participants not in need of MI, and to describe whether MI for physical activity and other factors can predict change of physical activity level.

     

    Method: A cohort was followed during two years and measured on lifestyle factors, socioeconomic and psychological factors, general health, motivation to change lifestyle and back pain by questionnaires. Based on risk of heart and coronary disease, participants underwent an MI-session for increased physical activity (n=393) or no MI-session (n=380) at baseline.

     

    Results: Besides having a deteriorated lifestyle, the majority of participants who received MI were females, had lower self-estimated economy, had lower health-related quality of life, scored lower on psychological factors and had comorbidity and back pain to a larger extent. Factors related to increase of physical activity level included being physically inactive at baseline, being a female, not having MI and not having disability due to back pain.

     

    Conclusion: Participants in the MI-group had poorer health and more back pain. Having MI did not predict an increase of physical activity, but a low level of physical activity in the past and being a female did play a part in the prediction. More research is needed on MI for increase of physical activity level for an individual with risk of heart- and coronary disease and/or with back pain.

    A comparison of practitioners' and students' conceptions of accounting work in contemporary practice2010Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Changes in the nature and scope of accounting services have become a serious concern for the accounting profession, with important implications for professional socialisation and graduate work readiness. We here compare the conceptions of accounting work held by practising accountants with those held by accounting students. The data for the analyses are the outcome spaces of two separate phenomenographic investigations of practitioners' and students'conceptions of accounting work. The analyses show that both practitioners and students have identified the functional aspect of accounting work although with different emphasis on its importance. The analyses also revealed two salient differences: 1) while practitioners are acutely aware of the value-added financial outcome aspect of accounting work, this awareness is not apparent in students' conceptions, and 2) while practitioners are keenly aware of an overarching tension between the demands for value-adding services and the implication for professional ethics, students have only very inchoate conceptions of professional ethics in practice. These findings help to identify areas for development in student learning.

    Globalization is having a significant impact on healthcare and physiotherapy education, among other sectors, can benefit from this trend. The main aim of this work was to develop and describe a conceptual framework for physiotherapy curriculum design and, in doing so, to stimulate international debate on physiotherapy education. The framework was developed through an international collaboration and was tried out in the participating schools in order to refine it further. The current framework consists of three elements to be taken into account in physiotherapy curriculum design: (1) The content aspect or the knowledge base of physiotherapy, (2) the learning aspect or the student's learning process, and (3) the socio-cultural context aspect, which concerns the way in which physiotherapy is experienced and practised. The content aspect includes a description of core concepts of physiotherapy: body, movement and interaction, and acknowledges that physiotherapy should be science-based. The learning aspect and the socio-cultural context aspect form separate parts of the framework. Nonetheless, all aspects are intertwined and reflect theory-practice integration. This framework is offered for critical reflection and as the basis for a debate on the development and evaluation of physiotherapy programmes. Further work is needed in testing the relevance of this framework for curriculum design in different countries and setting.

    Many governments believe that investing in human capital should increase citizens’ employability, which is why it is often presented as a solution to the problems of knowledge-based economies and societies, rising unemployment rates and economic competiveness. The aim of this study is to understand employers’ views regarding the employability of graduates from higher education in Rwanda. Employers of graduates in the programs of Accounting, Agriculture, Education and Medicine were interviewed to obtain a broad understanding of their views. The key themes that emerged from the thematic analysis were professional skills, being changeable/formable and skilful practices. This study argues that the concept of employability needs to be viewed as contextual because the understanding the professional and national contexts is fundamental to achieving a better understanding of graduates’ employability.

    A confessing 'science' in education and lifelong learning2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we identify resources drawn on from Foucault that are distinctive and pertinent for specific forms of analyses of what is happening in the turn to confessional practices in education and lifelong learning. We identify that confessional practices have come to shape and govern the Western world; they have emerged across the practices of the human sciences and are now intrinsic to our everyday lives and understandings of ourselves. Education and learning have a key position in promulgating confessional practices as a new social norm. They are key as perpetrators of this new kind fashioning of ourselves as human kinds in a particular way.

     

    We describe a regime and apparatus of power of education and lifelong learning which has confession intrinsic to its maintenance and productive force. Confession is described as technology, conduit of power, operating one person in relation to another, and dominating today in the production of specific forms of confessing people.  We call this ‘strategy’. Within this regime, in education and policy circles and more widely, we identify a shift in the talk accompanying and surrounding the emergence of these techniques: whereas before educators and policy makers talked about education, they now talk of learning. Lifelong learning and the learning society, the knowledge economy, society and Knowledge Age are themes that have come to dominate the texts emanating from the cloistered grounds of governmental offices and intra-national agencies. The question remains therefore of where this strategy takes us in terms of its wider social and political effects in western societies.

    The paper identifies and explores other previous educational and lifelong learning research that has considered confessional practices to consider whether or not these find answers to the question of what is happening today'

    Abstract [en]

    A new reality, where human labor is replaced by automated machines is causing production management to rethink how they can steer the production to meet their customers demand. There is a gap of values, techniques and tools to communicate with the processes existing in the new modern factories, where data sometimes is the single output. This thesis purpose was to develop a model out of Lean and Six Sigma, as an answer to how modern factory could work with an information system, reaching the ideal state.

     

    Through a theoretical analysis, Lean and Six Sigma differences in values, techniques and tools were weighted by the ideal state and recommendations from literature. Through a unstructured interview and system design review with a logistic group at a Swedish Modern Factory (SMF) a concept of an information system was developed. A project to test the model was initialized, where Define, Measure and Analyze phase was conducted. The model was thereafter modified from the projects implications.

     

    The result was a Lean Six Sigma model which values are customer focus, ideal state, result orientation, committed leadership, education and involvement. The technique follow a DMAIC cycle and continuous improvements through a current to future state approach. The used techniques were considered Six Sigma heavy, where Leans principles are considered into the models values. The information system supports the model in setting the processes of the factory in either stability or potential state, where they differ in Measure and Analyze phase. The test at SMF developed several assignable causes to variation on the component As lead time. The model adapted after the test to involve a Measurement System Analysis (MSA), before setting the next current state of the process.

    In this paper, we present an overview of interdisciplinary research from Ph.D. students working at the Division of Environmental Technology and Management at Linköping University, Sweden. Each of the Ph.D. students addresses the overall challenge of sustainability transitions in their research, although the themes and content of research varies considerably between individuals, encompassing research on actors, networks, products, materials, services and systems from the public and private sector, operating locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The scientific literature and methods used to frame and conduct studies varies considerably within the group, as does the individual focus on immediate issues of sustainability.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose: To analyse the cost-effectiveness of the activity-based Health Education Programme 'Discovering New Ways' versus a standard Individual Programme. Method: Two-hundred and twenty-nine persons were randomized to either the Health Education Programme or an Individual Programme. The present study is based on 131 persons who participated in the 28-month follow-up. Costs for the low vision clinic were documented prospectively along with external costs. A cost-effectiveness analysis was done using cases with an improved level of perceived security in daily activities as the effectiveness measure. Results: The Health Education Programme led to significantly more cases with an improved level of perceived security (45 vs. 10%, CI 95%: 21-49, p value < 0.001) and the total social cost per treatment was lower (28 004 vs. 36 341 SEK). Taken separately the low vision clinic costs were slightly higher due to a higher prescription of assistive devices, but external costs were lower for the Health Education Programme compared to the Individual Programme, though neither of these differences was statistically significant. Conclusion: The results suggest that replacing the standard Individual Programme with the Health Education Programme 'Discovering New Ways' is cost-effective as more persons experience increased security to a lesser total cost. © 2005 Taylor & Francis.

    Although previous research has identified contemporaneous associations between cognitive deficits and symptom phenotypes in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, no studies have as yet attempted to identify direction of effect. The present study used cross-lagged path modeling to examine competing hypotheses about longitudinal associations between rapid naming speed and symptoms of inattention in children. 1,506 school-age twins from Australia and the U.S. were tested for inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and rapid naming speed at three and four time points, respectively. Symptom severity of inattention from Kindergarten to fourth grade is consistently predicted by previous rapid naming, over and above auto-regressive and correlational associations in the model. Likewise, inattention symptoms have a small but significant predictive effect on subsequent rapid naming. The findings support a reciprocal relationship between naming speed and ADHD inattentive symptoms.

    A Design-Build-Test (DBT) course in electronics is presented. The course is designed based on the CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) framework for engineering education. It is part of the curriculum of two engineering programs at Linköping University, Sweden, where it has been given successfully for a number of years. The cornerstones of the course consist of carefully designed learning outcomes based on the CDIO Syllabus, a structured project management model such that the project tasks are carried out according to professional and industry-like routines, with well-designed organisation of the staff supporting the course, and challenging project tasks.

    In Sweden, there is a dearth of authentic learning spaces for pre-service teachers to experience maximized variation of disturbances, provocations, and conflicts that are a natural part of teaching. To provoke such situations for practice with real pupils would be ethically problematic, as it would compromise the integrity, mutual respect, and ethic of caring within the teacher-learner relationship. Its pedagogical scope would also be limited, as real-time classroom management do not allow for adequate reflection. Our paper will explore the use of computer simulations as a tool to use during mentorship for pre-service teachers when learning classroom management. We will therefore focus on understanding the personal leadership experiences that pre-service teachers can develop in computer simulators to become confident leaders in their classroom and how this understanding can be integrated into the design process of such simulators. Perspectives: Earlier empirical studies by (Granström & Einarsson, 1998; removed for blind review) documents problematic situations of disturbances, provocations, and conflicts that affect teachers as well as pupils in Swedish schools. Previous work by (Lewis, 2001) reveals that teachers might resort to punishment when conflicts arise, while (Woolfolk & Weinstein, 2006; Lewis, Romi, Katz & Xing, 2008) problematize the falsely perceived effectiveness of punishment. Our project therefore seeks to empower pre-service teachers by grounding their leadership in personal experiences through classroom computer simulations that allow exploration of alternative strategies for classroom management and continuous reflection on their appropriateness. Modes of Inquiry: A phenomenographical analysis, based on stimulated recall interviews, will focus on pre-service teachers’ verbalized descriptions of classroom management decisions taken within the simulator. This explorative form of reflective action-focused mentoring is contrasted with the standard formats as it seeks to understand the appropriateness of using computer simulations to teach classroom management. Data sources: Data from the project Simulerade Provokationer (eng. Simulated Provocations) generated by pre-service teachers from a Swedish university is utilized. This data includes the choices and verbalized reflections that the pre-service teachers made while exploring the simulation. Results: In the simulation the pre-service teachers are forced to take actions, reflect on choices, and change their decisions in an explorative fashion. The hypothesis being that through active participation and continuous self-reflection pre-service teachers will feel better prepared to be the classroom leaders they are expected to be and will carry out a leadership that’s consistent with their desired self-image. Scholarly significance: Numerous Swedish teachers resign in the beginning of their careers as the reality-check hits them of being unprepared for the leadership required of them (Akin-Little & Little, 2008; Colnerud, Karlsson & Szklarski, 2008). Despite the number of academically proposed approaches to classroom management all Swedish pre-service teachers do not successfully manage to apply those approaches as practical knowledge in the classroom. As academics we need to explore new ways of supporting pre-service teachers in learning how to perform classroom management as they after graduation will join a community of practice that is currently unable to support them in that growth.

    In the next decades, practically viable robotic/agent systems are going to be mixed-initiative in nature. Humans will request help from such systems and such systems will request help from humans in achieving the complex mission tasks required. Pragmatically, one requires a distributed task specification language to define tasks and a suitable data structure which satisfies the specification and can be used flexibly by collaborative multi-agent/robotic systems. This paper defines such a task specification language and an abstract data structure called Task Specification Trees which has many of the requisite properties required for mixed-initiative problem solving and adjustable autonomy in a distributed context. A prototype system has been implemented for this delegation framework and has been used practically with collaborative unmanned aircraft systems.

    Predictive modeling of future health states can greatly contribute to more effective health care. Healthcare professionals can for example act in a more proactive way or predictions can drive more automated ways of therapy. However, the task is very challenging. Future developments likely depend on observations in the (recent) past, but how can we capture this history in features to generate accurate predictive models? And what length of history should we consider? We propose a framework that is able to generate patient tailored features from observations of the recent history that maximize predictive performance. For a case study in the domain of depression we find that using this method new data representations can be generated that increase the predictive performance significantly.

    A Follow-up of an Occupational Therapy Programme based on Problem-Based Learning (PBL)2009Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    A follow-up study explored how graduate occupational therapists valued quality aspects of their undergraduate education on a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) occupational therapy programme. One hundred and fifty of 195 graduates completed a questionnaire. The survey focused on factors such as: specific occupational therapy content combined with practical skills and preparation for future work; problem-solving and critical thinking; ability to communicate and collaborate; personal and professional development; and life-long learning. The respondents rated items after considering them from two aspects: acquired skills and objective importance. The main results show that the respondents rated their skills as above average in the quality aspects of the programme. A discrepancy was evident between the rated acquired skills and the rated importance of key qualities of the curriculum.

    Student –centred learning with PBL is evaluated as having value but is rejected.

    Introduction: There is little information available on the effects of problem-based undergraduate curricula on doctors and their performances after graduation. Therefore, we conducted a questionnaire study of all graduates of the new medical programme at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Link÷ping University. Methods: All 446 medical students who had graduated from the new programme were asked to fill in a questionnaire about selected activities during their studies and their careers after graduation. They were also asked to evaluate the quality of their undergraduate education retrospectively. Statistical analysis was performed using descriptive, multivariate and bivariate approaches. Results: A total of 77% of the graduates responded. They showed a high degree of overall contentment with their undergraduate education and felt well prepared for professional life during their preregistration period and specialist education (mean = 4.0 on a 6-point Likert scale ranging from 0 to 5). They felt especially well prepared in terms of skills for communication with patients, collaboration with other health professionals and development of critical thinking/scientific attitudes. The students' age at the beginning of their studies correlated positively with their contentment as graduates, especially in terms of preparation for patient communication and collaboration with other health professionals. No differences between students originally admitted via a local admission procedure and those admitted via a national procedure were detected concerning retrospective evaluation of undergraduate medical education. Conclusion: Graduates of the new curriculum showed a high degree of satisfaction with their undergraduate education and its preparation of them for medical practice. Specifically, they were very content with the particular emphases of the new curriculum.

    Abstract [en]

    A constraint solver based on concurrent search and propagation provides a well-defined component model for propagators by enforcing a strict two-level architecture. This makes it straightforward for third parties to invent, implement and deploy new kinds of propagators. The most critical components of such solvers are the constraint stores through which propagators communicate with each other. Introducing stores supporting new kinds of stored constraints can potentially increase the solving power by several orders of magnitude. This thesis presents a theoretical framework for designing stores achieving this without loss of propagator interoperability.

    Intracellular signalling systems are highly complex. This complexity makes handling, analysis and visualisation of available knowledge a major challenge in current signalling research. Here, we present a novel framework for mapping signal-transduction networks that avoids the combinatorial explosion by breaking down the network in reaction and contingency information. It provides two new visualisation methods and automatic export to mathematical models. We use this framework to compile the presently most comprehensive map of the yeast MAP kinase network. Our method improves previous strategies by combining (I) more concise mapping adapted to empirical data, (II) individual referencing for each piece of information, (III) visualisation without simplifications or added uncertainty, (IV) automatic visualisation in multiple formats, (V) automatic export to mathematical models and (VI) compatibility with established formats. The framework is supported by an open source software tool that facilitates integration of the three levels of network analysis: definition, visualisation and mathematical modelling. The framework is species independent and we expect that it will have wider impact in signalling research on any system.

    A Framework for Safe Navigation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Unknown Environments2017In: 25th International Conference on Systems Engineering, 2017Conference paper (Refereed)

    This paper presents a software framework which combines reactive collision avoidance control approach with path planning techniques for the purpose of safe navigation of multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) operating in unknown environments. The system proposed leverages advantages of using a fast local sense-and-react type control which guarantees real-time execution with computationally demanding path planning algorithms which generate globally optimal plans. A number of probabilistic path planning algorithms based on Probabilistic Roadmaps and Rapidly- Exploring Random Trees have been integrated. Additionally, the system uses a reactive controller based on Optimal Reciprocal Collision Avoidance (ORCA) for path execution and fast sense-and-avoid behavior. During the mission execution a 3D map representation of the environment is build incrementally and used for path planning. A prototype implementation on a small scale quad-rotor platform has been developed. The UAV used in the experiments was equipped with a structured-light depth sensor to obtain information about the environment in form of occupancy grid map. The system has been tested in a number of simulated missions as well as in real flights and the results of the evaluations are presented.

    Emerging web-based technologies enable information sharing within and among rescue agencies and organisations. This development can facilitate education, training and development through effective distribution of documentation, models and lessons learned from training exercises and rescue operations. We discuss central aspects of this enterprise such as the need for domain-specific data models, methodologies for detailed exercise documentation, and the design of presentation and visualisation tools. Based on this investigation, we present a framework that supports modelling, documentation and visualisation of rescue operations for web-based distribution. We briefly describe the implementation of the components of the framework. Finally, we discuss how to apply the methodology and framework to training of first responders and university-level education of emergency managers and officials.

    We consider the problem of an autonomous robot searching for objects in unknown 3d space. Similar to the well known frontier-based exploration in 2d, the problem is to determine a minimal sequence of sensor viewpoints until the entire search space has been explored. We introduce a novel approach that combines the two concepts of voids, which are unexplored volumes in 3d, and frontiers, which are regions on the boundary between voids and explored space. Our approach has been evaluated on a mobile platform equipped with a manipulator searching for victims in a simulated USAR setup. First results indicate the real-world capability and search efficiency of the proposed method.
