    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis was to analyse, model and finally generate dynamic vehicular motions in a train. The objective with the analysis was to find important motions for a realistic train experience. The motions from the analysis were then weighted against possibilities for generation in a motion platform.A dynamic motion model was created to model the selected motions. The model was implemented in a simulation environment, more specifically MATLAB/Simulink. The simulation environment was used to simulate the model and to generate outputs to control a motion platform. The motions of the motion platform depended on how the modelled motions were chosen to be generated. The motion model was validated by comparison of results from the model and measured values from a real train.Generation of motions was accomplished by implementation of the model in a motion platform. A virtual test track was constructed and used to test how the implemented model controlled the motion platform. The experience of the test track in the motion platform was evaluated by persons in a cabin mounted on the motion platform.

    Abstract [en]

    The word irony is defined as an utterance where the meaning is the opposite of the words. This report is a continuing study of Peder Palmér's study What is ironic speech: to find the auditory clues (2013). The basis for this follow-up study consists of recordings with three different talkers with five sentences in five different moods: happiness, anger, seriousness, irony and sarcasm. Thirty men and women aged 18 to 60 years have been listening to the sentences and categorized them based on interpreted mood. The authors have measured fundamental frequency and intensity, and used these measurements as a basis to elucidate the perception of irony and the ability to perceive mood based on changes in fundamental frequency and intensity. The fundamental frequency has also been compared between the three talkers. An acoustic comparison between the different moods forms the basis for the analysis, which can provide information about the importance of acoustic parameters, as well as other factors such as context, when identifying different moods. The aim is to examine whether the moods that are most similar from an acoustic perspective are the ones that the test subjects most often fail to distinguish. The results show that it is difficult to solely from acoustic parameters interpret mood. Fundamental frequency and intensity appear to be of some importance when confusing irony with other moods. No differences were found between men and women's ability to detect irony and sarcasm based solely on acoustic parameters.

    Abstract [en]

    During the Fukushima Daiichi power plant incident sea water was used in an attempt to cool reactor Unit 3. Since sea water contains an excessive amount of chloride, 36Cl has likely been formed and spread in the environment. Because of the long residence time and the presumed high mobility in water there is an increased interest to learn more about the biogeochemical cycle of chlorine from a radiation risk assessment perspective. Chlorine occurs in inorganic form as chloride (Clin) or bound to organic matter as organic chlorine (Clorg) and is commonly found in the environment due to both anthropogenic and natural processes. Though there are still uncertainties regarding all of the components of the chlorine cycle in soil, the chlorination of organic matter has been exemplified by research. The reverse process, Clorg mineralizing into Clin, has however not been thoroughly investigated. For this study the objective was to observe at what rate Clorg mineralizes into Clin, this by using 36Cl as a tracer in forest soil. 36Cl was added to the soil and 36Clorg was formed over a period of approximately 100 days. After chlorination the samples were incubated in different conditions and the amount of 36Clorg was observed over a period of time (180 days). The result showed no evident dechlorination during the experiment period which indicates that Clorg can be stable in the organic horizon in forest soil.

    Abstract [en]

    This report discusses the road safety in Latin American developing countries, focusing mainly on Bolivia. To give the layman an overview, the general road traffic problem is explained. The factors on which road safety depends are described, as well as the degree in which the accident causes - human, vehicle and environment - are involved in a road crash.

    For the purpose of an uniform understanding of the term developing countries, they are defined from a traffic point of view. Thereafter, different definitions of the term crash are discussed. To make it possible to compare the countries with dissimilar crash definitions, the required adjustment factors are exposed. The countries are classified in three groups depending on the number of motor vehicles per 1000 inhabitants.

    Bolivia as the emphasis of the study is described in detail. First general facts are presented, so the reader knows what type of country Bolivia is. Secondly, the amplitude and sort of the network is explained. After this, the traffic incidents, i.e. number, type and cause, are summarised. To be able to propose some measures for the enhancement of the traffic situation it is essential to analyse the actual state. This is done in the next step.

    The most important existing regulations are described as well as the safety campaigns which were introduced in the past.

    Based on this, proposals to improve the safety are listed. As speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol are the main accident causes, countermeasures for them are proposed. These are classified into engineering, enforcement and education. The report ends with a discussion of implementation difficulties of such countermeasures. Eventually the conclusions from the paper are presented.

    Abstract [en]

    In speech and language intervention, the ability to interact is seldom evaluated; rather intervention is evaluated in terms of improved testresults.  If goal-setting in intervention also is based on everyday communicative needs, the relevance of the treatment may be increased and intervention outcome may be implemented in the patient’s natural environment.

    The present study, as part of a research-project, is based on analyses of interaction and interviews to examine everyday conversations and speech and language intervention. The aim was to explore if there is a relation between everyday communication needs and goal-setting in speech and language intervention for people with aphasia. A further aim was to investigate if there are everyday communicative needs that may form goals for speech and language intervention.

    Two individuals with aphasia and one individual with both dysarhtria and aphasia participated in the study. Three speech and language pathologists and two relatives also participated in the study. Everyday interaction and intervention sessions were recorded and transcribed according to Conversation Analysis principles and analysed from an interactional perspective. Interviews regarding intervention and everyday communication were carried out with all participants. Recordings were presented and discussed with all participants, in so called retrospections.

    Four phenomena that illustrate communication needs of the participating patients were identified: repair, alternative and augmentative communication, co-construction and feedback. Analysis, interviews and retrospections have revealed that communication needs can form the basis of goal-setting in speech and language intervention. It is also demonstrated that intervention mainly is based on the everyday communication needs of the patient. Retrospections were also shown to be useful in order to observe communication needs in everyday life and in order to evaluate speech and language intervention. The retrospections were found to be beneficial to an open dialogue between speech and language pathologist, patient and relatives regarding the content and aim of the intervention.

    Abstract [en]

    Domestication is the process by which animals become adapted to the environment provided by humans. The process of domestication has let to a number of correlated behavioural, morphological and physiological changes among many domesticated animal species. An example is the changes of plumage colour in the chicken. Plumage colour is one of the most readily observable traits that make distinction between breeds as well as between strains within a breed. Understanding the genetic architecture of pigmentation traits or indeed any trait is always a great challenge in evolutionary biology. The main aim of this study was to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting the red and metallic green coloration in the chicken plumage. In this study, a total of 572 F8 intercross chickens between Red Junglefowl and White Leghorn were used. Phenotypic measurements were done using a combination of digital photography and photography manipulating software. Moreover, all birds were genotyped with 657 molecular markers, covering 30 autosomes. The total map distance covered was 11228 cM and the average interval distance was 17 cM. In this analysis, a total of six QTLs (4 for red and 2 for metallic green colour) were detected on four different chromosomes: 2, 3 11 and 14. For red colour, the most significant QTL was detected on chromosome 2 at 165 cM. An additional QTL was also detected on the same chromosome at 540 cM. Two more QTLs were detected on chromosomes 11 and 14 at 24 and 203 cM respectively. Additionally, two epistatic pairs of QTLs were also detected. The identified four QTLs together can explain approximately 36% of the phenotypic variance in this trait. In addition, for metallic green colour, one significant and one suggestive QTLs were detected on chromosomes 2 and 3 at 399 and 247 cM respectively. Moreover, significant epistatic interactions between these two QTLs were detected. Furthermore, these two QTLs together can explain approximately 24% of the phenotypic variance in this trait. These findings suggest that the expression of pigmentation in the chicken plumage is highly influenced by both the epistatic actions and pleiotropic effects of different QTLs located on different chromosomes.

    Abstract [en]

    Speech production requires cooperation between cognitive, linguistic and motor processes. It also requires spatial and temporal control of muscles, as well as simultaneous and coordinated activity of respiration, phonation and articulation (Cheng, Murdoch, Goozée & Scott, 2007; Yorkston, Beukelman, Strand & Bell, 1999; Raphael, Borden & Harris, 2011). Voice Onset Time (VOT) reflects the timing between phonation and articulation (Hoit-Dalgaard, Murry & Kopp, 1983). VOT is the most reliable acoustic cue for distinguishing between voiceless or voiced plosives (Auzou et al. 2000). Studies of English-speaking children with phonological impairment have shown atypical VOT-patterns (Bond & Wilson, 1980). The aim of the present study was to investigate Voice Onset Time (VOT) among Swedish children with phonological impairment and to examine if their VOT-values differ from typically developed Swedish children. Participants were 38 children aged 4;2−11;6 distributed over eight age- groups and five developmental stages of phonology. Audio recordings of minimal pairs were made at preschools, schools or at speech pathology clinics. The results indicated that children with phonological impairment produced VOT with deviant values and with a great variability. A marked acoustic difference between voiceless and voiced stop consonants was present, but not in all cases. Since the VOT-values were distributed over the group of children with phonological impairment, no developmental trend toward adult-like values that could be related to increasing age was found for either the acquisition of producing VOT or the acquisition of producing voicing lead. No differences in VOT were seen between the children in different phonological developmental stages or ages. No correlation between the degree of deviance of VOT and the proportion of Procent Phonemes Correct (PPC), age or phonological processes were found. From the results the conclusion can be drawn that children with phonological impairment have deviant VOT-values that could be caused by lack of phonological knowledge, but in particular since the variability did not decrease with increased age, have difficulties with motor execution.

    Abstract [en]

    Autonomous vehicles have many application possibilities within many different fields like rescue missions, exploring foreign environments or unmanned vehicles etc. For such system to navigate in a safe manner, high requirements of reliability and security must be fulfilled.

    This master's thesis explores the possibility to use the machine learning algorithm convolutional network on a robotic platform for autonomous path following. The only input to predict the steering signal is a monochromatic image taken by a camera mounted on the robotic car pointing in the steering direction. The convolutional network will learn from demonstrations in a supervised manner.

    In this thesis three different preprocessing options are evaluated. The evaluation is based on the quadratic error and the number of correctly predicted classes. The results show that the convolutional network has no problem of learning a correct behaviour and scores good result when evaluated on similar data that it has been trained on. The results also show that the preprocessing options are not enough to ensure that the system is environment dependent.

    Abstract [en]

    Driving is a high-risk adventure and a highly complex task; yet anyone with a driver's licence might perform daily. The driving task is characterised by requiring competence and control to cope with the continuous changing risky driving environment. Driving is a complex task, some think of it as strenuous whereas others think of it as quite effortless and fun.

    The task of driving is affected by the driver's driving behaviour, which in turn is affected by the driver's personality. Since the early 1950s, researchers have been interested in how driver's driving personality affects the driver's driving behaviour and thus driving performance. Attitudes such as risk perception and trust towards driving are only a few of a myriad of personality attitudes that could affect the driving performance. Two psychological traits can be used to quantify the driver's driving behaviour in form of propensity for risk taking and trust in driving: Sensation Seeking and Locus of Control. Both traits can be used as a small step to give an explanation as to why drivers do as they do in the driving environment.

    Traffic works as it works with a steady flow of things. Sometimes the flow is disturbed and traffic-related accidents occur. One type of accidents is rear-end collision, when the driver collides with the rear part of the car in front. In order to reduce the amount of such accidents, various forms of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, ADAS, are introduced to aid drivers in their driving. There are many forms of ADAS, but they all share a common base in that they all aim to make the driver aware of the risks in her driving. The ADAS specific for rear-end collisions all aim to reduce the number of rear-end collisions that occurs annually in the traffic, which can be done by making the driver aware of the risks in her current driving performance.

    Abstract [en]

    Workplace accidents in Sweden have in recent years increased. Companies are at the same time putting a greater emphasis on preventing accidents and inform about safety and risks. Therefore there is a need to know how to visualize this safety information. This study is based on a part of a project proposed by the industrial company AB Wahlquists Verkstäder, in which they want to visualize their safety information for new employees and existing staff, and also for temporary contractors and apprentices. The purpose of this study is to see what is required of the visualization of safety information and what guidelines that should be followed. The focus is divided into two areas. One area concerns the safety information focusing on warning signs and safety symbols. The other area concerns what requirements and guidelines that applies specific to the visualization of safety information in an industrial environment. The study includes literature studies, and a case study focusing on the company AB Wahlquists Verkstäder. Interviews and testing of developed prototypes were conducted with staff at the company. The analysis shows that there are several factors that should be considered when visualizing safety information. It is important that the information is clear. This clarity can be achieved in various ways, for example by the use of bright colors, signal words or lighting. These guidelines also apply for visualization specifically for the industrial environment at AB Wahlquists Verkstäder. However, additional emphasis should be given to delaying habituation. Materials should also be carefully considered. New thinking and fresh ideas is something that is appreciated by the staff and that should be included in the visualization. It is questionable whether additional companies should have been included in the case study to enhance the generalization of the study. It can also be discussed if the interviews and prototype testing should have included a higher number of subjects. It can also be discussed if the testing should have been conducted in the actual work environment, instead of in a secluded office.

    Abstract [en]

    Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) offer the possibility of helping drivers to fulfill their driving tasks. Automated vehicles are capable of communicating with surrounding vehicles (V2V) and infrastructure (V2I) in order to collect and provide essential information about driving environment. Studies have proved that automated vehicles have a potential to decrease traffic congestion on road networks by reducing the time headway, enhancing the traffic capacity and improving the safety margins in car following. Furthermore, vehicle movement and driver’s behavior of conventional vehicles will be affected by the presence of automated vehicles in traffic networks. Despite different encouraging factors, automated driving raises some concerns such as possible loss of situation awareness, overreliance on automation and degrading driving skills in absence of practice. Moreover, coping with complex scenarios, such as merging at ramps and overtaking, in terms of interaction between automated vehicles and conventional vehicles need more research. This thesis work aims to investigate the effects of automated vehicles on driver’s behavior and traffic performance. A broad literature review in the area of driving simulators and psychological studies was performed to examine the automated vehicle effects on driver’s behavior. Findings from the literature survey, which has been served as setup values in the simulation study of the current work, reveal that the conventional vehicles, which are driving close to the platoon of automated vehicles with short time headway, tend to reduce their time headway and spend more time under their critical time headway. Additionally, driving highly automated vehicles is tedious in a long run, reduce situation awareness and can intensify driver drowsiness, exclusively in light traffic. In order to investigate the influences of automated vehicles on traffic performance, a microscopic simulation case study consisting of different penetration rates of automated vehicles (0, 50 and 100 percentages) was conducted in VISSIM software. The scenario network is a three-lane autobahn segment of 2.9 kilometers including an off-ramp, on-ramp and a roundabout with some surrounding urban roads. Outputs of the microscopic simulation in this study reveal that the positive effects of automated vehicles on roads are especially highlighted when the network is crowded (e.g. peak hours). This can definitely count as a constructive point for the future of road networks with higher demands. In details, average density of autobahn segment remarkably decreased by 8.09% during p.m. peak hours in scenario with automated vehicles. Besides, Smoother traffic flow with less queue in the weaving segment was observed. Result of the scenario with 50% share of automated vehicles moreover shows a feasible interaction between conventional vehicles and automated vehicles. Meaningful outputs of this case study, based on the input data from literature review, demonstrate the capability of VISSIM software to simulate the presence of automated vehicles in great extent, not only as an automated vehicle scenario but also a share of them, in traffic network. The validity of the output values nonetheless needs future research work on urban and rural roads with different traffic conditions.

    In the last decades, public universities and research institutions are faced with more scrutiny than before, with the self-regulation and governance of the researchers gaining more prevalence. Coupled with the accountability arguments and the use of rankings as quality measures, the university environment exerts different pressures upon scholars. This study explores how the PhD students cope with such pressures, by analysing how they justify their publishing choices. Their accounts are analysed by employing a strain of discourse analysis, namely interpretative repertoires, and analyse how through the use of these repertoires, the institutional pressures are managed and the discourses are opposed and reproduced.

    This is a work about documentation and preventive conservation. My case study includes a number of furnishings in an environment where virtually no circumstances have changed during last 400 years. My goal was to, on the basis of observation of materials, techniques and construction, determine the possible date of origin and that with regard to previous research on climate and the effect of light and other conditions to formulate guidelines for the continued storage, without changing anything more pervasive in the physical environment. I have come to the conclusion that the different methods like the control of air movement or protection of the environment from UV-light is not unproblematic in an environment like this, but that the best strategy in the current situation are simple proven methods such as protective covering and ventilation.

    Abstract [en]

    Nitride-based semiconductor materials make it possible to fabricate optoelectronic devices that operate in the whole electromagnetic range, since the band gaps of these compounds can be modified by doping. Among these materials, the sp2-hybridized boron nitride has properties that make it a potential candidate for integration in devices operating in the short-wavelength limit, under harsh environment conditions, due to the strength of the B-N bond.  Nevertheless, this binary compound has been the less studied material among the nitrides, due to the lack of complete control on the growth process.

    This thesis is focused on the study of the optical properties of sp2-hybridized boron nitride grown by hot-wall chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, at Linköping University, Sweden. The samples received for this study were grown on c-plane aluminum nitride as the buffer layer, which in turn was grown by nitridation on c- plane oriented sapphire, as the substrate material. The first objective of the research presented in this thesis was the development of a suitable ellipsometry model in a spectral region ranging from the infrared to the ultraviolet zones of the electromagnetic spectrum, with the aim of obtaining in the process optical properties such as the index of refraction, the energy of the fundamental electronic interband transition, the frequencies for the optical vibrational modes of the crystal lattice, as well as their broadenings, and the numerical values of the dielectric constants; and on the other hand, structural parameters such as the layers thicknesses, and examine the possibility of the presence of roughness or porosity on the boron nitride layer, which may affect the optical properties, by incorporating their effects into the model. The determination of these parameters, and their relation with the growth process, is important for the future adequate design of heterostructure-based devices that incorporate this material. In particular, emphasis has been put on the modeling of the polar lattice resonance contributions, with the TO- LO model, by using infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry as the characterization technique to study the phonon behavior, in the aforementioned spectral region, of the boron nitride. On the other hand, spectroscopic ellipsometry in the visible-ultraviolet spectral range was used to study the behavior of the material, by combining a Cauchy model, including an Urbach tail for the absorption edge, and a Lorentz oscillator in order to account for the absorption in the material in the UV zone. This first step on the research project was carried out at Linköping University. 

    The second objective in the research project was to carry out additional studies on the samples received, in order to complement the information provided by the ellipsometry model and to improve the model itself, provided that it was possible. The characterization techniques used were X-ray diffraction, which made it possible to confirm that in fact boron nitride was present in the samples studied, and made it possible to verify the crystalline quality of the aforementioned samples, and in turn relate it to the quality of the ellipsometry spectra previously obtained; the Raman spectroscopy made it possible to further verify and compare the crystalline qualities of the samples received, as well as to obtain the frequency for the Raman active B-N stretching vibration in the basal plane, and to compare this value with that corresponding to the bulk sp2-boron nitride; scanning electron microscopy made it possible to observe the rough surface morphologies of the samples and thus relate them to some of the conclusions derived from the ellipsometry model; and finally cathodoluminescence measurements carried out at low temperature (4 K) allowed to obtain a broad band emission, on all the samples studied, which could be related to native defects inside the boron nitride layers, i.e., boron vacancies. Nevertheless, no trace of a free carrier recombination was observed. Considering that the hexagonal-boron nitride is nowadays considered to be a direct band gap semiconductor, it may be indirectly concluded, in principle, that the dominant phase present in the samples studied was the rhombohedral polytype. Moreover, it can be tentatively concluded that the lack of an observable interband recombination may be due to the indirect band gap nature of the rhombohedral phase of the boron nitride. Spectroscopic ellipsometry does not give a definite answer regarding this issue either, because the samples analyzed were crystalline by nature, thus not being possible to use mathematical expressions for the dielectric function models that incorporate the band gap value as a fitting parameter. Therefore, the nature of the band gap emission in the rhombohedral phase of the boron nitride is still an open research question. On the other hand, luminescent emissions originating from radiative excitonic recombinations were not observed in the cathodoluminescence spectra. This second step of the project was carried out at the Leroy Eyring Center for Solid State Science at Arizona State University.

    Abstract [en]

    Increasing fuel prices, higher demands on "greener" transports and tougher international emission regulations puts requirements on companies in the automotive industry in improving their vehicle fuel efficiency. On a typical heavy duty Scania truck around 30% of the total fuel energy is wasted through the exhaust system in terms of heat dissipated to the environment. Hence, several investigations and experiments are conducted trying to find ways to utilize this wasted heat in what is called a waste heat recovery (WHR) system. At Scania several techniques within the field of WHR are explored to find the profits that could be made.

    This report will cover a WHR-system based on thermoelectricity, where several new thermoelectric (TE) materials will be investigated to explore their performance. A reference material which is built into modules will be mounted in the exhaust gas stream on a truck to allow for measurements in a dyno cell. To analyze new materials a Simulink model of the WHR-system is established and validated using the dyno cell measurements. By adjusting the model to other thermoelectric material properties and data, the performance of new TE materials can be investigated and compared with today’s reference material.

    From the results of the simulations it was found that most of the investigated TE materials do not show any increased performance compared to the reference material in operating points of daily truck driving. This is due to dominance of relatively low exhaust gas temperatures in average, while most advantages in new high performing TE-materials are seen in higher temperature regions. Still, there are candidates that will be of high interest in the future if nanotechnology manufacturing process is enhanced. By using nanostructures, a quantum well based BiTe material would be capable of recovering 5-6 times more net heat power compared to the reference BiTe material. Another material group that could be of interest are TAGS which in terms of daily driving will increase the power output with pending values between 40-80 %. It is clear that for a diesel truck application, materials with high ZT-values in the lower temperature region (100-350°C) must be developed, and with focus put on exhibiting low thermal conductivity for a wide temperature span.

    OMPython is a Python library for OpenModelica, which provides a Python interface to OpenModelica. This thesis significantly improves OMPython by an enhanced, more powerful and easier to use API. It presents how a user can use the Python interface to simulate and access Modelica models using Python objects. The enhanced OMPython includes the list of functions that have been implemented such as getXXXNames(), getXXXValues(), setXXXValues(), getXXXOptions(), setXXXOptions(), and simulate(), etc. that allow users to interact with Modelica model properties(i.e., model variables) and the output of the OpenModelica compiler and simulator. A few Modelica models are used for demonstrations in order to make it easy for readers to understand. By the way, this thesis does not describe modeling Modelica models or compilation of such models.

    Modern heterogeneous multi-core architectures containing one or multiple GPU de- vices require expert knowledge in order to be fully utilized through parallelization by the programmer. Software written for one hardware setup might not easily be portable to work as efficiently on a differing architecture. Automatic parallelization of sequential C code to make efficient use of such architecture in an extensible man- ner would facilitate the porting of legacy code and provide a non-expert programmer with a tool granting access to modern hardware architectures.

    We present an early prototype of such an extensible tool-chain and attempt to apply it on domain-specific C source code. It is based on a generic tool for hierarchical pattern matching in C source codes, where the user can define own patterns and recognition rules, and a code generation back-end. We show how it, combined with existing libraries, can be used to automatically port sequential legacy code to different multicore architectures, such as multicore CPUs and GPUs. Our tool is an attempt to do this and yields valid parallelized code, but fails to reach speedup for most implemented patterns. The tool is applied on one test case, a legacy ODE implementation in C, with similar results. A reason for slowdown is discussed in the concluding section.

    Adult learners bring different experiences and perspectives to their education. It is important they get opportunities to learn at their own speed, through different situations and activities. Consequently, the teaching methods and learning environment are very important to the learner. Therefore the school and it´s teachers play a big role in making the learner feel comfortable and gain new experiences which could help them develop themselves as adult learners and find the right learning path.

    This thesis explores how the individuals needs and life experience is utilised through the learning process in the learning environment of the Preliminary studies program at Keilir. The focus is on student’s experiences of the learning environment at Keilir in order to see if they meet the needs of adult students. That being said, interviews with former and current participants in the program will show what the students experienced during their time in the program and how they felt their needs were met.

    Furthermore Lave and Wenger´s (1991) concept of a community of practice will be used to explore the education at Keilir and how learning in collaboration with other students and others that impact the learner’s journey can affect the learner’s education and their learning experience.

    Abstract [en]

    Data communication over cellular networks is expensive for the mobile device in terms of energy, especially when the received signal strength (RSS) is low. The mobile device needs to amplify its transmission power to compensate for noise leading to an increased energy consumption. This thesis focuses on developing a RSS map for the third generation cellular technology (3G) which can be stored locally at the mobile device, and can be used for avoiding expensive communication in low RSS areas.

    The proposed signal map is created by crowdsourced information collected from several mobile devices. An application is used to collect data in the mobile device of the user and the application periodically sends the information back to the server which computes the total signal map.

    The signal map is composed of three levels of information: RSS information, data rate tests and estimated energy levels. The energy level categorizes the energy consumption of an area into "High", "Medium" or "Low" based on the RSS, data rate test information and an energy model developed from physical power measurements. The coarse categorization provides an estimation of the energy consumption at each location. It is evaluated by collecting data traces on a smartphone at different locations and comparing the measured energy consumption at each location to the energy level categories of the map.

    The RSS prediction is preliminarily evaluated by collecting new data along a path and comparing how well it correlates to the signal map. The evaluation in this thesis shows that with the current collected data there are not enough observations in the map to properly estimate the RSS. However, we believe that with more observations a more accurate evaluation could be done.

    Computer games have always become more and more advanced. One of the biggest reasons to its rapid evolution is the use of procedural content generation (PCG), which is used to generate game content automatically. However, there is one type of games that is more unexplored when it comes to PCG, namely motion games. Motion games are games where the player interacts with the game by moving his own body rather than using a gamepad, mouse or keyboard. Thanks to that, motion games are a healthier alternative to regular games, and this thesis therefore explores the possibilities to use PCG to develop more exciting motion games. The focus lies on achieving variation and progression since both of those are important concepts closely related to PCG. An exploratory case study is also conducted to examine how the derived guidelines work in a real game. The result concluded is that the guidelines seem to work well, but that all of them are not easily adapted to every game. Different game genres therefore call for different guidelines to be used.

    distinction. It also discusses what epigenetics could potentially tell us about ourselves,

    and our place in a world where we are all creatures of both nature and nurture. The

    author proposes that with its promise of insight into the relationship of the body to

    environment and experience over time, epigenetics could be an inextricable link

    between nature and nurture. Combining a modified version of diffractive analysis, and

    gender/sex as an analytical device, the author engages with epigenetic research and its

    representation in popular science and in the public imaginary. After discussing the

    striations of feminist discourse on permeable bodies, the author proposes epigenetics as

    another layer in the strata, placing epigenetics within feminist and gender studies

    literature and discourse. Noting that as research gains ground the way in which the

    public imagines and describes epigenetics gives shape to its materialization and

    development, this thesis asserts the urgent need for social sciences, and in particular

    feminist and gender studies, to engage in critical discourse with epigenetic research as it

    is carried out and as it is translated to the wider public.

    In telecommunications in general and in GSM in particular, the handover is a feature that guarantees a smooth transition of a call from one base station - that is for the purpose of this project an antenna - to another. In the recent ten years, the amount of data traffic through mobile telecommunications has doubled annually, putting an enormous strain on the network and forcing operators to upgrade with more and more base stations and new features. Although 3G and 4G are responsible for data traffic in most countries, GSM still provides more than 80% of the coverage for mobile devices around the world. Due to the increase in data traffic, 3G and 4G need to use more and more frequencies at the expense of GSM. An optimization of the GSM network is thus vital. In this project, we research two methods to automatically choose the parameters of interest (PoI) that govern the handover feature in each cell which is, roughly speaking, the area of coverage of one antenna. In one of these methods, the choice of cell- and cell-to-cell-specific parameters has its origins in control theory while the other method is based on mathematical optimization. In the mathematical sense, our goal is to optimize the quality of service over PoIs. Extensive simulations have been run using these PoIs in order to evaluate if and how the two different methods can effectively be used in reality. Several useful insights have been gained that will provide the basis for future work. The optimization approach in particular has proved to deliver good results within the limitations of the simulated environment used for testing.

    Cognitive processes include biases, such as cognitive judgment bias. Cognitive judgment bias influences how the surrounding is interpreted, and this can differ between individuals. However, thus far no formal framework exists to understand how cognitive judgment bias works. Here I investigated how environmental factors and personality influence cognitive judgment bias in Gallus gallus chicks. First I investigated how two environmental factors affected the cognitive judgment bias of laying hen chicks. Chicks were exposed to stress and/or environmental enrichment, and tested in a cognitive judgment bias test before and after collective unpredictable stressors were presented. The results showed that chicks living in enriched environments were faster to reach all cues after the collective stressors than chicks living in non-enriched environments. Individual differences are often observed in animals, even when raised under identical conditions; therefore I also investigated if variation in personality influence cognitive judgment bias. Red junglefowl chicks were thereby raised in equal environments and exposed to personality assays in addition to a cognitive judgment bias test. I demonstrated that less nervous chicks were more optimistic towards ambiguous and negative cues than more nervous chicks. Also previous studies have found indications of connections between cognitive bias and environment or personality. I conclude that environmental enrichment can buffer the influence of stress on cognitive judgment bias and that personality has a small influence on interpretations of stimuli. In the future, experiments in this field should focus on exploring more aspects on how cognitive biases occurs to improve our understanding of cognitive processes.

    The automative industry drives the development towards more autonomous vehicles, this because of both safety and energy conservation reasons. This thesis focuses on solutions to lower the fuel consumption for heavy duty vehicles, which is more and more requested. Both due to increasing fuel costs and to greater environmental awareness. Through extensive simulations with a vehicle model, developed at and provided by Scania CV AB, different driving strategies are evaluated and analysed. This determined how to achieve a low fuel consumption when driving heavy vehicle in an urban environment. The simulations shows that the fuel consumption can be lowered by coasting the vehicle when deceleration and thus minimize the use of the brakes. One should also when possible, select a higher gear to lower the fuel consumption due to engine friction. These strategies are used to develop a controller which lowers the fuel consumption without increasing the trip time for the vehicle. The controller is able to alter the velocity of the vehicle within a reference window which results in both a lower fuel consumption and a shorter trip time for the driving cycle used.

    Abstract [en]

    Hageby is a district in Norrköping, which is mainly perceived as segregated with a large number of inhabitants of foreign origin. It's also associated with low socioeconomic status, criminality, high unemployment and social exclusion. The external perception of the area is mainly negative, whilst the internal experiences and views, on the contrary are quite positive. Some internal conflicts, based on ethnicity and religion is clearly present here, but most informants expresses a positive view of the Swedish people, though many have little opportunity to interact with ethnic Swedes. Living in a multicultural area, seems for many of the local inhabitants to be something partly positive. For newcomers living there, closeness to family and their ethnic group, also helps soften the stress of settling in and adjusting to a new community. Extensive research shows that living in a segregated area, tend to slow the integration process, having negative effect on learning the new language, developing networks necessary for finding work, understanding of and full participation in society. Newer the less, my informants show that living in a segregated area, does not necessarily have these effects on an individual level. Although the extended influence of negative stereotyping of the area and the people who live there, tend to have an effect on self image and the construction of identity.

    Transportation is a key component of the urban realm due to its high fossil fuel consumption, GHG emissions and pollution generation (among other negative externalities) that have been aggravated by an individual motor vehicle-driven society. In order to achieve a balanced urban growth for the future, the transportation paradigm requires a complete shift that will depend upon a change on people’s behaviors and perceptions about mobility. Being the biggest, most populous city of Brazil and the western hemisphere, as well as the financial motor behind the country’s economy, São Paulo currently faces a very serious transportation problem: an extremely high car per capita ratio in conjunction with a deficient public transport network. Furthermore, socioeconomic disparities exert an additional pressure to this dilemma, limiting the access to mobility and deeply embedding the car from a cultural standpoint. Given its prominence, São Paulo is the ideal city to evaluate how specific cultural and socio- spatial niches can steer a cultural paradigm shift that could ultimately trigger a socio-technical transition towards sustainability. In this case study, the role of policies, technology, and infrastructure as policymaking instruments are analyzed in the context of urban spaces in emergent nations, where political and economic structures are strong social determinants. Moreover, this study has shown how these instruments could not only produce a new set of mobility practices (or a new transportation culture) but also the creation of an equitable and thriving urban environment.

    Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that has been the focus of a lot of discussions lately and has attracted a large number of users. Its offers many possibilities for cheap transactions and unregulated finances which has been realized in numerous sites and applications on the web and in mobile phones. One medium that seem to have been neglected when it comes to Bitcoins development is email. This is curious since Bitcoin by its nature seem to have many properties that would work well with texted messages. The purpose of this study it to analyze the current papers about Bitcoin to find the current status of email based Bitcoin services,  and try to analyze if email as a tool is a suitable medium to be used with Bitcoin. This analyze is done through a systematic literature review of current papers, followed by an examination of past and current Bitcoin companies that has used email as part of their service. In the end the results suggested that the low security in email, and the apparent lack of services that would benefit from an email based Bitcoin service suggest that a service like that would be hard to develop today and not very useful to the public.

    Abstract [en]

    The world faces big issues regarding its energy supply and its impact on the environment. Something has to be done in order to stop this. One way to do that is to make energy generation more sustainable by shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Solar energy is one of them, and this report covers hot water produced from it.

    A country that should have good conditions to harvest solar power is Singapore. The country has a very limited land area and almost no natural resources. Because of this, most of its energy is supplied by imported natural gas. In this report, a case has been created to evaluate the performance and profitability of a hot water solar system in a villa in Singapore. In order to do this, literature about the sun, solar heating systems and Singapore has been looked into. Further, thermodynamical correlations have been studied and used in calculations to draw conclusions.

    The result of this report is that an installation of a solar water heating system in a villa in Singapore is feasible and profitable. Other applications of solar thermal power have been evaluated qualitatively and the conclusion is that these also have big potential in Singapore. Ultimately, this could lead Singapore to be less relying on imported energy and also reduce its impact on the environment.

    Abstract [en]

    This report investigates the technical and economic viability of introducing a Near Field Communication (NFC) client system in a gym environment. The system aims to aid the customers with logging their workout, retrieving information regarding exercises as well as enhancing the attendance control for both staff and customers. To identify what information to be presented, the most important quality factors and what functionalities are most desired, an exploratory case study was conducted. The study showed that there is a discrepancy between the desire to log ones workout and actually doing it. Most people want to keep track of how they workout, but despite the wide variety of workout applications on the market, they choose not to use them. The main concern expressed was that the logging needs to be fast and easy, indicating that the existing apps do not fulfill the ease of use desired. The system presented in this report is coupled to the gym where NFC tags pair an exercise to its corresponding logger and information in the application. The ability for the gym to track its customers’ workout habits is a rare feature that provides several economic benefits such as targeted advertisement, better maintenance control and new customer services analyzing their workout. For the system to be effective the customers need to use the system and log their workout, therefore it needs to be supported by the major mobile platforms. To accommodate this a hybrid platform approach using PhoneGap was used. This approach allows for development in one language that translates into native embedded web applications. At the time of writing Apple’s latest models do include the hardware for NFC communication. However, it is not possible to develop a custom NFC application for iPhone yet. By adopting the hybrid approach there is no need to create a whole new app when they do release the rights to do so. In conclusion, the technical viability of the NFC based system comes with the tradeoffs of dealing with the lack of standards of a new technology and being early on the market with a new feature. This calls for some custom solutions, since each platform adopts their own way of NFC implementation, but is manageable. The economic aspects are tied to the use of the system where the ease of use is the key factor for the customers. The end user tests indicate that NFC provides that small advantage over traditional workout applications needed to make logging attractive.

    Abstract [en]

    GUI test automation is a popular and interesting subject in the testing industry. Many companies plan to start test automation projects in order to implement efficient, less expensive software testing. However, there are challenges for the testing team who lack experience performing GUI tests automation. Many GUI test automation projects have ended in failure due to mistakes made during the early stages of the project.

    The major work of this thesis is to find a solution to the challenges of establishing new test automation projects and determine an appropriate method to build GUI tests automation. Due to the particularity of GUI tests automation, keyword driven test approach is introduced in this thesis. The advantages and disadvantages are shown by undertaking comparison with the Record and replay testing method and the data driven testing method. The research also includes a feasibility study of GUI tests automation. The analysis report points out which kinds of test projects should be automated and which kinds should not be automated.

    Test automation tool selection is a critical step for an test automation project. This thesis shows the correct procedure for selecting a testing tool and explains the strategies of testing tool selection. It also summaries the mistakes made during the tool selection process. Several classical types of testing tools which support Qt software testing are compared and evaluated. Based on the in-depth analysis and comparison of testing tools, the thesis explains how the different tools fit with the different test projects.

    The implementation procedure of a test automation is demonstrated in this thesis. The procedure includes test case design and testing framework implementation. The test script is created based on the structure of a keyword driven test framework. The thesis also discusses several interesting topics related to GUI tests automation for future research.

    Eye tracking technology has made it possible to accurately and consistently track a users gaze position on a screen. The human eyes center of focus, where it can see the most detailed information, is quite small at a given moment. The peripheral vision of humans have a much lower level of details than the center of gaze. Knowing this, it is possible to display a view that increases the level of resolution at the position of the users gaze point on the screen, while the rest of the screen keeps a lower resolution. An implementation of such a system can generate a representation of data with both detail and overview. The results indicate that even with simple gaze data processing it is possible to use gaze control to help explore details of a high resolution image. Gaze data processing often involve a compromise between stability, responsiveness and latency. A low latency, highly responsive gaze data filter would increase the risk for lens oscillation, and demand a higher concentration level from the viewer then a slower filter would. Applying a gaze data filter that allowed for smooth and stable lens movement for small saccades and responsive movements for large saccades proved successfully. With the uses of gaze control the user might be able to use a gaze aware application more efficient since gaze precedes actions. Gaze control would also reduce the need for hand motions which could provide a improved work environment for people interacting with computer.

    Background: The global loss of biodiversity is a very timely debate, and experts are actively working on finding new ways to lessen and reverse the negative impacts placed on the environment. One such way is biodiversity offsetting and it is a methodology that is becoming more prevalent within national environmental legislations. Colombia enforced a legislation regarding biodiversity offsetting in 2012, and it quickly became apparent that the process would not progress without its issues.

    Aim: The aim of this study is to research the government, NGOs and companies in relation to the legislation of biodiversity offsetting in Colombia established in 2012, to acquire knowledge regarding their roles, relationships and the challenges they are experiencing.

    Methodology: The empirical data was collected during a two months field study in Colombia. The data was collected in a qualitative manner, through interviews with employees at governmental entities, NGOs and companies. While conducting the empirical research, theoretical information was gathered, which implies an iterative approach.

    Conclusion: According to the results of this study, there are various issues to be found in the implementation process of the legislation, both in regards to practical difficulties, as well as in the relationships between the different actors. Some of these problems could be mitigated with a national habitat banking system, where the offsetting activities are managed by an external part.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between work organisation and the labour market status of employees in Sweden, during the years 2008 to 2012. The main interest is to analyse the probability of staying employed or not, and staying employed after the general retirement age.To assess this relationship three different data sources are combined. Work organisation is approximated with the NU2012 survey, which was conducted by the Swedish Work Environment Authority. We use an empirical combination of the questions, and the work organisation is assumed constant throughout the years. Separate regressions are estimated for each possible labour market status. The regressions are estimated with cross section models and random effects panel data models.We find that there is a relationship between work organisation and employees’ labour market positions. Numerical flexibility is found to affect the work environment and the individuals’ labour market statuses negatively. Decentralisation’s and learning’s impact on the individuals’ labour market status is, however, incoherent with theories and previous research. These results are probably due to the reverse time causality of the study. Finally we propose that it is important to investigate this relationship further to be able to make policy changes.

    The topic of this paper revolves around the security environment of the wider Black Sea region, with a focus on three protagonist states, and an alliance: Russia, the United States of America, Romania, and NATO. This work comes as a response to the normative demand of avoiding an inter-state conflict in this part of the world, an area already characterized by deep mistrust, frozen conflicts, separatist movements, transnational organized crime, terrorism, and great-power struggle between holders of nuclear capabilities. The objective of this paper is explanatory, namely to help pinpoint the root causes of potential conflict between regional players. By pursuing a Defensive Realist approach, it is suggested that perception of insecurity lies at the heart of the negative dynamics. It is the inter-state security dilemma that could have the ultimate effect of transforming tensions into a spiral of conflict, unless such dilemma is mitigated through its regulators. Therefore, ‘by alleviating the security dilemma, conflict in the wider Black Sea region can be avoided’. The testing of this hypothesis constitutes the contents of this paper. The conclusion of the thesis confirms the expected results, namely that there is a security dilemma operating in the wider Black Sea Region, and that the regulators have the ability to influence its escalation, yet particular specifications are to be observed.

    This work is about transcending in to another environment to discover new inspiration and new paths. It’s about borrowing from other areas of art/design to find different passages in to your own creativity. Without having a clear vision beforehand of how the end result would turn out, I wanted to explore how a fusion design process would look. I used the world of fashion as my starting point, the designer Diana Orving lead the way and I designed freely from that platform. By learning more from that other world, the world of fashion, I got a bigger insight in my own! Physically it resulted in a folding wall that symbolizes what I want to work with in the future.

    Abstract [en]

    The Kinect v2 is a RGB-D sensor manufactured as a gesture interaction tool for the entertainment console XBOX One. In this thesis we will use it to perform 3D reconstruction and investigate its ability to measure depth. In order to sense both color and depth the Kinect v2 has two cameras: one RGB camera and one infrared camera used to produce depth and near infrared images. These cameras need to be calibrated if we want to use them for 3D reconstruction. We present a calibration procedure for simultaneously calibrating the cameras and extracting their relative pose. This enables us to construct colored meshes of the environment. When we know the camera parameters of the infrared camera, the depth images could be used to perform the Kinectfusion algorithm. This produces well-formed meshes of the environment by combining many depth frames taken from several camera poses.The Kinect v2 uses a time-of-flight technology were the phase shifts are extracted from amplitude modulated infrared light signals produced by an emitter. The extracted phase shifts are then converted to depth values. However, the extraction of phase shifts includes a phase unwrapping procedure, which is sensitive to noise and can result in large depth errors.By utilizing the ability to access the raw phase measurements from the device we managed to modify the phase unwrapping procedure. This new procedure includes an extraction of several hypotheses for the unwrapped phase and a spatial propagation to select amongst them. This proposed method has been compared with the available drivers in the open source library libfreenect2 and the Microsoft Kinect SDK v2. Our experiments show that the depth images of the two available drivers have similar quality and our proposed method improves over libfreenect2. The calculations in the proposed method are more expensive than those in libfreenect2 but it still runs at 2.5× real time. However, contrary to libfreenect2 the proposed method lacks a filter that removes outliers from the depth images. It turned out that this is an important feature when performing Kinect fusion and future work should thus be focused on adding an outlier filter.

    The purpose of this study is to examine what high school teachers perceive as disruptive behaviors of students in the classroom. The  study examines the measures and approaches used against disruptive behavior. The method that was used for this study is semi-structured interviews, where I used an interview guide. The results are divided into themes based on the project issues. The results shows that high school teachers that participated in the study,  perceived disruptive student behavior as something that creates a bad working environment for the students themselves, their classmates and the teachers. It is considered that to prevent disruptive student behavior, one has to continuously work with the students. The teachers believe that one should have a good dialogue and  communication with the students, in order to prevent disruptive student behaviors.

    Background:

    Inguinal hernia surgery is one of the most common surgeries within general surgery, with approximately 20 000 surgeries per year in Sweden. There are three places in Östergötland County where inguinal hernias are executed within outpatient surgery; at Aleris Specialistvård in Motala (ASM), Närsjukvården in Finspång (NiF) and at Medicinskt Centrum in Linköping (MCL).

    There is a theory that private health care providers are more time-efficient than public health care providers. The private health care providers are considered to perform more operations over a given time though no studies has been done on time efficiency.

    This study was performed to detect if there is a difference in time in the various steps during the surgery between the clinics, what causes these differences and if the patients differ.

     

    Methods:

    The study includes 70 patients distributed on three outpatient surgery clinics; ASM, MCL and NiF. The inguinal hernia operations were divided into shorter steps measured with a digital watch.  Furthermore, data were noted about the patients’ age, ASA-score, BMI and who were present in the operating room. Statistical analyses were performed with the Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance. The software used was SPSS version 22.

     

    Results:

    The study found no significant difference in BMI, ASA-score and age between the health care providers (p > 0,05). However, regarding the time efficiency, there were significant differences between the clinics.

     

    Conclusions:

    The study concludes that there are big differences in time, within the various steps in the inguinal hernia surgeries, between the clinics. The private health care providers were always faster than the public health care provider. Since no earlier studies have been made in this area, it would be interesting to see if there are similar differences in other types of surgeries.

    With modern computer systems becoming more and more complicated, theimportance of rigorous testing to ensure the quality of the product increases.This, however, means that the cost to perform tests also increases. In orderto address this problem, a lot of research has been conducted during thelast years to find a more automated way of testing software systems. Inthis thesis, different algorithms to automatically explore and test a systemhave been implemented and evaluated. In addition to this, a second setof algorithms have been implemented with the objective to isolate whichinteractions with the system were responsible for a failure. These algorithmswere also evaluated and compared against each other. In the first evaluationtwo explorers, which I called DeBruijn and LStarExplorer, were consideredsuperior to the other. The first used a DeBruijn sequence to brute forcea solution while the second used the L*-algorithm to build an FSM overthe system under test. This FSM could then be used to provide a moreaccurate description for when the failure occurred. The result from thesecond evaluation were two reducers which both tried to recreate a failureby first applying interactions performed just before the failure occurred. Ifthis was not successful, they tried interactions further and further away, untilthe failure was triggered. In addition to this, the thesis contains descriptionsabout the framework used to run the different strategies.

    Managing stormwater sustainably in the face of extreme weather events has increasingly been recognized as a strategy for climate adaptation in the urban planning context. Sustainable stormwater management intends to reduce urban vulnerability while ensuring the overall sustainability and robustness of future cities. To add to the emerging research field of green infrastructure, the objective of the study is to explore the role of multi-functional solutions as a climate change response in urban planning and development. This study has been driven by an inductive research process and draws on empirical data collection through workshops and interviews with City Hall officials in Motala City. The study concludes that despite the lack of preventative planning to anticipate climate change, city renewal and urban development of Motala City presented a window of opportunity to implement potential multi-functional stormwater solutions in the urban environment through urban planning. Further, increased focus on internal and external collaboration through the process of envisioning the future of the city have enabled new forms of governance and facilitated arenas for public acceptance and an integrative planning-approach. Lastly, discourses on attractiveness enabled greenery to be viewed from a social, economic and environmental perspective, supporting multi-functional stormwater solutions as a strategy for climate adaptation and urban sustainability.

    Abstract [en]

    Genetic studies of type 1 diabetes (T1D) have identified 50 susceptibility regions, finding major pathways contributing to risk, with some loci shared across immune disorders. To make genetic comparisons across autoimmune disorders as informative as possible, a dense genotyping array, the Immunochip, was developed, from which we identified four new T1D-associated regions (P < 5 × 10(-8)). A comparative analysis with 15 immune diseases showed that T1D is more similar genetically to other autoantibody-positive diseases, significantly most similar to juvenile idiopathic arthritis and significantly least similar to ulcerative colitis, and provided support for three additional new T1D risk loci. Using a Bayesian approach, we defined credible sets for the T1D-associated SNPs. The associated SNPs localized to enhancer sequences active in thymus, T and B cells, and CD34(+) stem cells. Enhancer-promoter interactions can now be analyzed in these cell types to identify which particular genes and regulatory sequences are causal.

Those are Partial Differential Equations (PDE)  and explicit parallelism in algorithmic code.  While PDEs are not  yet supported by the Modelica language, this thesis presents a  framework for solving PDEs using the algorithmic part of the  Modelica language, including parallel extensions. Different  numerical solvers have been implemented using the explicit parallel  constructs suggested for Modelica by the ParModelica language  extensions, and implemented as part of OpenModelica. The solvers  have been evaluated using different models, and it can be seen how  bigger models are suitable for a parallel solver. The intention has  been to write a framework suitable for modelling and parallel  simulation of PDEs. This work can, however, also be seen as a case  study of how to write a custom solver using parallel algorithmic  Modelica and how to evaluate the performance of a parallel solver.

    As companies grow larger and become more international, it is likely that it comes to a point where it would be cheaper to produce on site, or at least have distribution centers, rather than having a centralized production that requires long range shipping. As this occurs, there is a wide range of challenges that the company must face, however these challenges are by now well documented and while not to be underestimated and called “easy” it is nothing new as a wide range of companies have done it before. One aspect that however is less known is the influence that external differences has, in other words factors that would produce a differing result even with the exact same internal setup, on the perceived aspects (referred to as Values in this work) from the providers point of view. In particular what is interesting is the perceived positive impacts above expectations that is gained from having external differences. To be able to better understand and quantify this impact the term “Provider Value” has been created and is being researched towards understanding what Values exist and how they are being affected.Provider Value (PV) is a cutting edge concept within eco-design research that this work is based on and in particular ProVa – Provider Value Evaluation for Integrated Product Service Offerings (Matschewsky et al. 2015) is the latest step to date towards creating the tools needed to increase the utilization, and reap the benefits, of PVs. Another interesting and relevant aspect to PV is how Product/Service System (PSS) could be an essential part in paving a new way of avoiding increased environmental impact while having economic growth. This is done by adding services on top of already existing products (Sakao et al. 2009).To find out more about what kind of external factors that might be behind the differences a case study was conducted, interviewing employees at two companies within one concern in Sweden and Japan. The results of this work indicates that if the company want its PVs to remain the same the main obstacle is external economic differences. In this particular study it is also clear that differences in business model and company structure has a big impact. With all the discussion regarding environment it was on a surprisingly low level of interest at both companies and what mattered was that the products cleared the minimum requirements, nothing more, as “any additional return is hard to estimate”. If PV keeps growing and tools are made to assist, this could not only help simplify the transitioning to other countries and help utilizing existing Values from the start, it could also increase the utilization in general, in particularly in regards to the Environment.

    This thesis presents a way of performing multi dimensional FFT in a continuousflow environment by calculating the FFT of each dimension separately ina pipeline. The result is a three dimensional pipelined FFT implemented on aStratix III FPGA. It can calculate the three dimensional FFT of a data set containing2563 samples with a word size of 32 bits. The biggest challenge and themain part of the work are the data permutations in between the one dimensionalFFT modules, this part of the design make use of an external DDR2 SDRAMas well as on-chip BRAM to store and permute data between the modules. Theevaluations show that the design is hardware efficient and the latency is relativelylow and determined to be 84.2 ms.

    In recent years Ethernet has cought the attention of the real-time community. the main reason for this is that it has a high data troughput, 10Mbit/s and higher, and good EMI characteristics. As a protocol that might be used in real-time anvironments such as control systems for cars etc, it seems to fulfil the rquirements. TTEthernet is a TDMA extention to normal Ethnernet, designed to meet the hard deadlines required by real-time networks. This thesis describes how TTEthernet handles frames and the mathematical formulas to calculate shuffle delay of frames in such a network. Open problems related to TTEthernet are also discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    Accidents at the construction site are a usual problem today. Therefore we have chosen to investigate how the safety routine is followed at the company Åhlin & Ekeroth. The routines are compared to the results from a questionnaire study and several interviews. We have chosen to delimitate the study to accidents in the workplace because it is the most common work-related injury.

    The goal with our study is to highlight problems in the working environment at the construction site. The result helped us to come up with suggestions for how to increase the safety and decrease the numbers of accidents.

    To answer our questions we did a questionnaire study, interviews and study visits. We visited four projects in Linköping. We did interviews with the staff management at each project and a questionnaire study with the professional workers. Then we put together the result and compared them to different injunctions, laws and the safety routine at Åhlin & Ekeroth.

    The results show that the company´s routines are good and the problem is that they are not followed at the construction site. The biggest reasons for this is piecework, laziness and the attitude to safety.

    The arrangements we have thought of to improve the working environment are to improve the information flow, arrange activities outside work for increased fellowship. We also believe that the system for piecework needs to be modified.
