    Abstract [en]

Every year, approximately 17 500 drunk drivers are sued in Sweden. Of these, only 10 percent are women. The women are therefore considered a minority. In this study, I have taken interest in how the female drunk driver is constructed implemented by the probation service. By using critical discourse analysis I have found that the woman in these investigations is contributed the role of a deviant in two senses. She deviates because she is a woman who has committed a criminal deed and also because she often has problems with alcohol as well. I have found that the woman, because of these deviations, is depicted as a victim, both for the situation she is in and for her own actions.

Kartläggning av familjecentralen i Hageby: ur ett samverkansperspektiv2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

We have executed a chart of Hageby familycenter with focus on how interplay functions between the different units; ”öppen förskola/preschool”, child welfare center and social service. We have started with the themes recieved from two surveys respective two group interviews. These turned to partly the staff at the familycenter, partly the directorate. The central themes we recieved are purpose/goal, interplay, interplaycontracts, occupational roles, preventative work, secrecy/ethics and exercise of authority. In our analysis we have dicussed these, exemplified with quoteations from our informants and then “connected” our discussion to current litterature. The results of this study shows that cooperation is a good tool för preventative work with families and their different needs. The preventative work is also the primary aim at the familycenter. The conclusion this study applies is that cooperation between the authorities and the familycenter has been succesfull, partly because the employes has been more accesable for the families who visit the familycenter, partly because the role of social service has been defused. There are, however, some difficulties with the activity that can be blamed on too wide aims, “BVC” strained work situation and the increasing number of visitors, all this wich can lead to individuals in need of help and support not getting the attention or get hold of in the extent that would be desired.

Kvalitetsprocesser för Lagring och Distribution av Livsmedel på Schenker Coldsped2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis is to make plans for how Schenker Coldsped should act to meet customer demands, in this case from Burger King, for the use of EFSIS standards (European Food Safety Inspection Service).

EFSIS offers independent third party inspection services specially designed for food, beverage and related industries. The standard Schenker Coldsped aims to certify to is the

EFSIS technical standard for the storage and distribution of foodstuffs. Coldsped is a part of Schenker Sverige AB. The company offers total solutions for transportation and storage of refrigerated and frozen products all over Europe. Coldsped has a total of 800 refrigerated vehicles and also offer storage of refrigerated and frozen products as well as product refinement such as preparation, thawing, sawing, packaging and labelling.

To be allowed to handle foodstuffs, companies in Sweden are obligated to enact selfregulation applicable to their line of business. This supervision shall include a HACCPplan, which is a system for identifying, assessing and controlling risks of importance to food safety.

By introducing the EFSIS technical standard for the storage and distribution of foodstuffs at Coldsped establishments, routines and knowledge will be documented. Consequently staff knowledge will be incorporated in the company’s ISO9001:2000 system, Isopeq, as well as being available in files in the corresponding department. A first step towards the implementation of EFSIS is the decision to incorporate the HACCP-plan into Isopeq, the company’s quality system.

Advantages of working to the EFSIS technical standards are:

    •A safer handling of foodstuffs

    •More documented systems

    •A more effective organisation

•A more effective and clear communication with new customers

•Increased competitiveness My recommendation is to implement changes in line with my plan. This calls for:

    • Investment in existing plants

    •Personnel resources for the process

•Planning the implementation in detail by coordinating resources

•Join the CIES (an independent network for companies handling food) for benchmarking

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Quality of Life of Elderly People in Iran: With Sevice Design Approach2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the aging world of today, more attentions are grabbed towards studies on elderly. New facilities and technologies are emerged to serve to the elderly, maketheir life easier, better and more useful. Having participated in a study on thequality of life of the elderly in Europe, it was aimed to run a similar project toresearch the quality of life of the elderly in a Non-EU country. This was donethrough the research questions “What is the quality of life for them?” and “Howa designer, focused on service design, can improve their quality of life?”The knowledge for the study was obtained from fields Quality of Life of ElderlyPeople, Service Design, Service Design Process, and Qualitative Research. As thekey country for this study, Iran was chosen. Study on the target group in thiscountry was done through Cultural Probes and in analyzing the probes, Processfor Empathy in Design was used. To visualize the results of the target group study,Affinity Diagrams and Personas were drawn. The result was designing a service for the target group, which is presented byConcept Scenario, Storyboards, System Maps and Blueprints. In this concept, called “Virtual Family”, the personas are encouraged to be members of a networkwhich is supported by an organization/community in terms of health, social life, leisure activities and educational programs. This network is forming a virtualfamily regarding the traditional values and ethics which are important for thisage group. Additionally it supports them with entertainment and educationalprograms. Later on, the service concept was evaluated by a number of people inthe same age and social group of the target group. Evaluators found the conceptan excellent complement for mentioned target group who are on the verge oflosing their family and social structure, but the organizational system of the contextcountry should be studied to know if it is planning is practical in that context.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

30 000 people in Sweden get a stroke every year. This leads to large personal adaptions as well as high costs for the society. The most efficient treatment, thrombolysis, must be given as soon as possible to have a good effect. At the same time it is very important to find out if the patient has any differential diagnosis that can make the treatment hazardous.

This study investigates how the course ov events around acute stroke patients take place and important factors for the decision making. The studiy is based on ethnographic field studys on four swedish hospitals. The material is analysed with methods from joint cognitive systems and goal-oriented design. The results show that in spite of different organisation of the course  of events around acute stroke patients are the processes and direct communication most successful for effective spread of information between the processes. The neurologist on call is an important roll who, as well as the rest of the participants in the course of events, balances the decision making between efficiency and thoroughness. The combination of analysis gives results on both system- and individual levels. Possibilites for improvents are given in three categories: logistic, technological and organizational.

Att bygga bostäder enligt miljöbyggnadskrav: En fallstudie i området Nya Wahlbecks2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Energy and resource efficiency is an important part in moving towards a sustainable society. In the year 2013, the total energy use in Sweden was 563 TWh and approximately 26 % of the energy was used in the residential and service sector. Within the residential and service sector, nearly 60 % of the used energy is for heating (Energimyndigheten, 2015). The construction of energy efficient buildings is a central part in creating a sustainable society and Nya Wahlbecks is supposed to become a city district which will show that it is possible to increase growth, quality of life and well-being and at the same time decrease the use of non recyclable and non reusable resources. The primary purpose of this master thesis has been to generate suggestions on how to design the residential buildings in the new city district Nya Wahlbecks, which will be built in east Valla in Linköping, so they can be certified in accordance to the environmental certification system Miljöbyggnad. Besides the primary purpose an investigation on how much electricity that can be generated with photovoltaic and how much energy that can be saved by the use of solar heating panels, has also been conducted. Finally a comparison in emissions of CO2-eqvivalents between a building that just meets the criteria´s of Boverkets Byggregler (BBR) and the generated building models was done. The results which the case study has generated, clearly shows that it is possible to build the new residential buildings in Nya Wahlbecks so that they will meet the different criteria’s for grade Silver and Guld from Miljöbyggnad. The requirements from Miljöbyggnad aim to have as low energy use as possible at the same time as a good indoor climate is kept. These two factors can be contradictions to one another, as for instance low energy use can be reached by having thicker insulation, but thicker insulation often results in higher indoor temperature which can then lead to deterioration in indoor climate. The investigations of energy use and indoor climate were conducted through simulations in the building-simulation program IDA-ICE, where several optimizations were done for different parameters to finally meet the requirements from Miljöbyggnad. Simulations with solar panels for heating and generation of electricity were also conducted with IDA-ICE. The results of the study shows that nearly 60 % of the used electricity in the project building can be generated from photovoltaic panels placed on the roof of the building. About 9 % of the buildings heating energy can be produced with solar panels placed in the same way as the photovoltaic ones. When it comes to emissions of CO2-eqvivalents there would be a difference in approximately 19 tons, which is equivalent to about 30 %, if the building meets the requirements of Miljöbyggnad Silver instead of just meeting BBR´s requirements.

Åttonde nationella prioriterings-konferensen 2015: En summering2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Välfärden – en osäker resa in i framtiden?: Dokumentation från Sjätte nationella prioriteringskonferensen, Västerås 6–7 oktober 20112011Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Inblick i några föredrag ges i denna textsamling.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Key performance indicators for the evaluation of an air navigation service providers' safety management system2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Safety is the main concern of the aviation industry. All Air Navigation Service Providers must have a Safety Management System (SMS) which states how safety is handled, promoted and prioritized. By developing Key Performance indicators (KPIs), it is possible to quantify the effectiveness of a SMS, discover potential flaws and improvement measures. This thesis identifies principles behind the SMS, the development of KPIs and suggest potential KPIs for the Swedish air navigation service provider LFVs’ SMS.

A literature study was performed and organisation specific documents were analysed to develop potential KPIs within the areas timely compliance with international obligations, competency and adoption and sharing of best practices based on an EASA questionnaire. This work presents a set of 27 performance indicators and recommends 6 as potential KPIs for the three areas together. The KPIs are developed specifically for LFV but could be applicable for other organisations with similar SMS structure and processes. They should be analysed within the organisation and, potentially, have thresholds set before implementation.

Organizational Effects of Using SaaS Systems in SMEs2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

"The cloud" has been a hot subject the last couple of years, and has been considered especially attractive to SMEs due to making it possible for whole information systems to be fully managed by the vendor. This can unburden the customer organization regarding for example large investment costs, hardware and software maintenance, while also adding flexibility and scalability.

There are three types of service models: infrastructure, platform and software, which dictate what the customer and vendor manages. In Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), which is the focus of this study, a third part manages both the applications and hardware and the users access these resources through the Internet. However, with the usage of SaaS comes several issues for companies to handle and make use of, for example security and mobility.

This master thesis' aim is to present organizational effects of SaaS usage in SME user companies, by studying customer organizations post implementation. A qualitative comparative study was conducted where we held semi-structured interviews with SME users mainly at their own offices. In total six interviews were conducted at five different companies. At least two years usage experience was a criteria we set to ensure we could retrieve enough data from the companies.

To fulfill the aim of the study we set out to find common issues affecting SMEs using SaaS systems. Through a pre-study, including literature studies and customer interviews, we determined which of the common issues that could be considered most relevant. Factors taken into consideration was how SaaS specific an issue was and how relevant it is in the post implementation phase, and how much data we were able to retrieve regarding an issue through the interviews. The relevant issues were: price model, vendor relation, frequent updates, mobility and integration. Further, five hypotheses were derived, one for each relevant issue regarding the organizational effects of SaaS usage.

An analytical model was constructed mainly based on DeLone and McLean's (1992; 2003) original and updated Information System Success Model. The model helped in deriving organizational effects of usage from the different relevant issues. By using the analytical model with interview and literature study material we came up with the findings of this report, as described below.

The possible price models enables companies to be more flexible with their IT portfolio. Also, it was concluded that the costs of SaaS are based upon usage, which could make it harder to estimate, especially if the usage varies. But it can also be a strength enabling customers to scale their usage as needed.

In general, the vendor relation between a customer and vendor was not too complex, however with one exception. Our main discovery was that certain factors of SaaS usage affect the degree of experienced vendor lock-in differently. These include the nature of the pricing model, contract binding times and data ownership rights. Further, the level of trust and lock-in level could also affect the customer intention to change system.

Frequent updates, which are managed by the vendor, reduce time and effort in regards to maintenance performed by customers. However, sometimes the updates could also cause problems when the customer had own configurations.

The mobility offered by SaaS systems extends organizations ability to work. This includes increased geographical freedom for mainly employees of an organization.

We found that integration is much more of a general issue for information systems. But in SaaS connection of services are possible and can thus enable further value than each service can on its own. However, integration also causes increased lock-in and system management.

Handover Optimization in GSM2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In telecommunications in general and in GSM in particular, the handover is a feature that guarantees a smooth transition of a call from one base station - that is for the purpose of this project an antenna - to another. In the recent ten years, the amount of data traffic through mobile telecommunications has doubled annually, putting an enormous strain on the network and forcing operators to upgrade with more and more base stations and new features. Although 3G and 4G are responsible for data traffic in most countries, GSM still provides more than 80% of the coverage for mobile devices around the world. Due to the increase in data traffic, 3G and 4G need to use more and more frequencies at the expense of GSM. An optimization of the GSM network is thus vital. In this project, we research two methods to automatically choose the parameters of interest (PoI) that govern the handover feature in each cell which is, roughly speaking, the area of coverage of one antenna. In one of these methods, the choice of cell- and cell-to-cell-specific parameters has its origins in control theory while the other method is based on mathematical optimization. In the mathematical sense, our goal is to optimize the quality of service over PoIs. Extensive simulations have been run using these PoIs in order to evaluate if and how the two different methods can effectively be used in reality. Several useful insights have been gained that will provide the basis for future work. The optimization approach in particular has proved to deliver good results within the limitations of the simulated environment used for testing.

Effekter av e-tjänster inom den offentliga vården: En kvalitativ fallstudie om hur e-tjänster kan påverka en offentlig vårdorganisations verksamhet och dess medarbetare2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

E-services are becoming increasingly prevalent in various contexts. Organizations in the public sector have also embraced this trend and today provide e-services with different purposes, e.g. various e-health services. Although there are advantages of e-services compared to traditional channels, they are not free of problems; a public organization must, among other things, provide an availability that private organizations may not need. This in turn means that the business needs to adapt its internal IT systems to handle incoming cases, which affects both the organization’s business and its employees. As today’s demands exceeds the resources, and that the population in Sweden is growing older, demands increase on the health care’s business. Citizens have to take greater responsibility for their own healthcare, which involves changes in working methods through effective e-services. Therefore, we examined the consequences this has within the business, as well as how the use of e-services affects the employees’ working routines and administrative work.

The study aims to identify and analyze consequences, opportunities and obstacles with e-health and e-services within a public health care organization. In this way, we see that the study may help with possible explanations to the challenges that arise from the use of e-services in the public health care. The intention is also to identify and describe possible gaps between expected effects of strategies and the outcome in the operational business, which we see can contribute to greater understanding of the differences and how they might be handled. The study is based on a qualitative case study on Region Östergötland, where we have collected empirical data through interviews. The interviews have then been interpreted and analyzed to provide an illustration of how the organization strategically works with e-services in the public healthcare and how this is manifested in the business.

The study results and conclusions show that there are both positive and less desirable effects of e-services within the operational level of the business. The same also applies to certain strategic decisions, particularly the decision to make patient records available through the e-service My health care contacts. We consider that an important contribution of the study is to highlight the needs from the operational health care business, as well as the importance of taking these into account in the development of e-health and e-service related strategies. We consider that another contribution of the study is the need to reflect on the business implications that may arise as a result of e-services.

A study of Bitcoin as a currency for email-based micro-transactions2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that has been the focus of a lot of discussions lately and has attracted a large number of users. Its offers many possibilities for cheap transactions and unregulated finances which has been realized in numerous sites and applications on the web and in mobile phones. One medium that seem to have been neglected when it comes to Bitcoins development is email. This is curious since Bitcoin by its nature seem to have many properties that would work well with texted messages. The purpose of this study it to analyze the current papers about Bitcoin to find the current status of email based Bitcoin services,  and try to analyze if email as a tool is a suitable medium to be used with Bitcoin. This analyze is done through a systematic literature review of current papers, followed by an examination of past and current Bitcoin companies that has used email as part of their service. In the end the results suggested that the low security in email, and the apparent lack of services that would benefit from an email based Bitcoin service suggest that a service like that would be hard to develop today and not very useful to the public.

Undvikandet av skatt bland privata välfärdsbolag: en utredning av potentiella lösningar utanför skatterätten2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Regler gällande ränteavdrag återfinns i inkomstskattelagen (1999:1229) (vidare benämnt IL). Enligt 16 kap.

Konsumentens information på bankmarknaden för fonderoch sparkonton2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Socioeconomic Impacts of Transitioning to Collaborative Port Operations - A case study of the Port of Gothenburg2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to derive a method for estimation of costs and benefits of implementing Port Collaborative Decision Making (Port CDM), and to apply this method to the Port of Gothenburg. By using the Port of Gothenburg as a case study, conclusions can be drawn regarding the economic viability of Port CDM in one of Scandinavia‟s largest ports. This study considers two major sources of benefits that are hypothesized to result from transitioning to collaborative port operations: improved possibilities for speed optimization prior to arrival in port due to increased predictability in estimated berthing times, and shortened service times due to increased possibility for planning and resource optimization by port service providers. The estimation of impacts is based on one month‟s traffic data in the Port of Gothenburg. Predictability of estimations is analyzed to determine the benefit potential of Port CDM. The estimated cost savings for cargo vessels can be divided into 5 categories: bunker, emission, time, manning and capital cost savings. The costs of implementing and maintaining Port CDM are estimated with values from relevant previous research. The results of this study indicate that the implementation of Port CDM in the Port of Gothenburg is a profitable investment, for the shipping industry and for society as a whole. The estimated annual net benefit is 27.3 million euros. A sensitivity analysis using alternative unit valuations for emissions, as well as low and high estimations of the effectiveness of Port CDM, indicates that the economic viability of the project is robust under all assumptions considered.

En plats för livet: En jämförande fallstudie om hur två kommuner hanterar de demografiska förändringarna2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Currently there are big differences between municipalities in Sweden. These differences leadto two dissimilar tendencies: the population is aging and the degree of urbanisation increases. The urbanisation has set several smaller municipalities in a severe economic situation and alot of municipalities are facing to either raise the local tax or reduce the public service. In thispaper the authors’ research through economic concepts how two medium sized municipalitieshave handled the demographic changes and what the municipalities should do in order toincrease their attractiveness. The findings of this study indicate that the demographic changes, to a large extent, dependson previous recessions in the municipalities which still is causing an unbalanced economy. The municipalities are facing a downward spiral that is hard to emerge from. On the otherhand some municipalities managed the recessions in a more successful way and are nowfacing a more positive economic position. Further, there is a clear correlation between a wellfunctioningintegration on the labour market and public finances. The result of the paper alsoshows that a well-functioning labour market, housing market and commercial supplydetermines municipalities’ attractiveness.

    Abstract [en]

    Background:

Inguinal hernia surgery is one of the most common surgeries within general surgery, with approximately 20 000 surgeries per year in Sweden. There are three places in Östergötland County where inguinal hernias are executed within outpatient surgery; at Aleris Specialistvård in Motala (ASM), Närsjukvården in Finspång (NiF) and at Medicinskt Centrum in Linköping (MCL).

There is a theory that private health care providers are more time-efficient than public health care providers. The private health care providers are considered to perform more operations over a given time though no studies has been done on time efficiency.

This study was performed to detect if there is a difference in time in the various steps during the surgery between the clinics, what causes these differences and if the patients differ.

    Methods:

The study includes 70 patients distributed on three outpatient surgery clinics; ASM, MCL and NiF. The inguinal hernia operations were divided into shorter steps measured with a digital watch.  Furthermore, data were noted about the patients’ age, ASA-score, BMI and who were present in the operating room. Statistical analyses were performed with the Kruskal-Wallis one-way analysis of variance. The software used was SPSS version 22.

    Results:

The study found no significant difference in BMI, ASA-score and age between the health care providers (p > 0,05). However, regarding the time efficiency, there were significant differences between the clinics.

    Conclusions:

The study concludes that there are big differences in time, within the various steps in the inguinal hernia surgeries, between the clinics. The private health care providers were always faster than the public health care provider. Since no earlier studies have been made in this area, it would be interesting to see if there are similar differences in other types of surgeries.

Stock efficiency, Almroths2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

How Provider Value is Perceived in regards to Integrated Product Service Offerings and why: A case study2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As companies grow larger and become more international, it is likely that it comes to a point where it would be cheaper to produce on site, or at least have distribution centers, rather than having a centralized production that requires long range shipping. As this occurs, there is a wide range of challenges that the company must face, however these challenges are by now well documented and while not to be underestimated and called “easy” it is nothing new as a wide range of companies have done it before. One aspect that however is less known is the influence that external differences has, in other words factors that would produce a differing result even with the exact same internal setup, on the perceived aspects (referred to as Values in this work) from the providers point of view. In particular what is interesting is the perceived positive impacts above expectations that is gained from having external differences. To be able to better understand and quantify this impact the term “Provider Value” has been created and is being researched towards understanding what Values exist and how they are being affected.Provider Value (PV) is a cutting edge concept within eco-design research that this work is based on and in particular ProVa – Provider Value Evaluation for Integrated Product Service Offerings (Matschewsky et al. 2015) is the latest step to date towards creating the tools needed to increase the utilization, and reap the benefits, of PVs. Another interesting and relevant aspect to PV is how Product/Service System (PSS) could be an essential part in paving a new way of avoiding increased environmental impact while having economic growth. This is done by adding services on top of already existing products (Sakao et al. 2009).To find out more about what kind of external factors that might be behind the differences a case study was conducted, interviewing employees at two companies within one concern in Sweden and Japan. The results of this work indicates that if the company want its PVs to remain the same the main obstacle is external economic differences. In this particular study it is also clear that differences in business model and company structure has a big impact. With all the discussion regarding environment it was on a surprisingly low level of interest at both companies and what mattered was that the products cleared the minimum requirements, nothing more, as “any additional return is hard to estimate”. If PV keeps growing and tools are made to assist, this could not only help simplify the transitioning to other countries and help utilizing existing Values from the start, it could also increase the utilization in general, in particularly in regards to the Environment.

    Abstract [en]

To buy and give presents together with others can be both practical and fun but also difficult. This work has involved a usability test of a service for facilitating joint purchases, produce personas in order to let the company get to know its target group, answer a number of specific questions posed by the company, and also answer the question how joint gift purchases work. This was done through questionnaires, through usability tests where usability issues were identified and the usability metric expectation measure was used, and through interviews and thematic analysis. The outcome was a list of usability issues, improvement proposals from the participants and answers to the company’s questions. Furthermore the results from the expectation measure showed that all tasks in the test was both expected and perceived to have high usability. The work also yielded two personas and seven themes as the answer to the research question.

Effects of early and late procurement of installations service2015Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Resilience Engineering within ATM - Development, adaption, and application of the Resilience Analysis Grid (RAG)2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Resilience Engineering has evolved during the recent century and could be a good complement to the prevailing ideas concerning safety within the air traffic industry. The concept of Resilience Engineering stresses the fact that in order to keep up the high standard of safety, there must be greater attention directed to the importance of being proactive, and to implement measures before dangerous situations arises. The purpose of our work was to develop the Resilience Analysis Grid (RAG) to help LFV, the leading Air Navigation Service Provider in Sweden, to identify their ability to deal with disturbances and unexpected events. By testing our RAG on seven active air traffic controllers and operational managers, we were able to produce a final set of assertions, with a total number of 22 items, which LFV (or other similar organisations) can use as a foundation for future RAG studies. As a first attempt we also rated the answers which gave us an opportunity to produce a star diagram, showing the relationship between the areas covered by the RAG. During the interviews we discovered that resilience is already today in many aspects a big part of the everyday work and that the RAG method can therefore be applicable in the industry with some modification. However, there are certain areas within LFV that we believe there is room for improvements. We believe that the RAG could serve as a helpful tool in identifying these areas as well as assisting LFV in their striving to remain one of the safest organisations in the world.

Increasing the availability of a service through Hot Passive Replication2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis examines how redundancy is used to tolerate a process crash fault on a server in a system developed for emergency situations. The goal is to increase the availability of the service the system delivers. The redundant solution uses hot passive replication with one primary replica manager and one backup replica manager. With this approach, code for updating the backup, code for establishing a new primary and code to implement fault detection to detect a process crash has been written. After implementing the redundancy, the redundant solution has been evaluated. The first part of the evaluation showed that the redundant solution can deliver a service in case of a process crash on the primary replica manager. The second part of the evaluation showed that the average response time for an upload request and a download request had increased by 31\% compared to the non-redundant solution. The standard deviation was calculated for the response times and it showed that the response time of an upload request could be higher compared to the average response time. This large deviation has been investigated and the conclusion was that the database insertion was the reason.

Made in Sweden: Små teknikintensiva tjänsteföretags val av etableringsform vid internationalisering2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Small enterprises have become increasingly important in the Swedish business world. Among other things, 60 percent of the contribution to the country’s economy comes from small businesses. To support future growth and development it is important for companies to venture onto the international markets. This is a big step for small enterprises with constrained capital and guidance on the internationalization process and choice of entry mode is needed. Research on these two factors are limited in relation to small technology-focused enterprises in the service sector, which is the most rapidly growing sector in the Swedish economy.

Aim: The aim of the study is to analyze the internationalization process and the choice of entry mode for small and technology-focused enterprises in the Swedish service sector.

Methodology: The study has a qualitative research strategy and a deductive research approach. It is based on semi-structured interviews with three small technology-focused enterprises in the Swedish service sector and can be classified as a comparative case study.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that the most essential tool, for small technology-focused enterprises in the Swedish service sector when going abroad, is a distinct network of contacts. The study also reveals that the technical aspect of these types of companies implies that collaboration is the least risk and capital-intensive choice of entry mode at the beginning of a foreign establishment, which challenges the current research on the topic.

Strategisk verifiering av social IT-produkt: en djupdykning i en blå ocean2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Startup companies about to release B2B-software on the Internet have special circumstances. The company's main asset – the software concept – can easily be replicated by other companies and thus limit the possibilities of value creation. The competitive advantage is volatile and maintaining it requires profound strategic preparatory work. The purpose of this study is to examine how a Blue Ocean Strategy can be used in this context to find an additional set of profitable target customers and an alternative strategic approach. Background material was collected by attending strategy meetings at a startup company and its business contacts. Based on the company’s existing software, a Blue Ocean Strategy was developed and presented, first to the board and then to potential customers. As a result, one customer is now interested in testing the service, seeing opportunities to extend its use in its operations across Europe. In conclusion, a Blue Ocean Strategy can be used to find alternative strategic approaches in this context.

Faster Locking Differential Through Active Brake-Control2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When a vehicle with wheels aligned in pairs turn, the wheel traveling around the outside of the curve has to roll farther than the wheel on the inside. This means that some sort of device must must be used to allow the drive wheels to rotate at different speeds to prevent wear on the tires. This is usually a mechanical device where the input rotation controls the sum of the two output rotations, this is known as a differential. This solution however has some shortcomings, the biggest one is that the total amount of force that can be transferred between the tires and the road surface is limited by the tire with the least traction. In slippery conditions this can be a big problem since it only takes one wheel to lose traction in order to prevent the vehicle from accelerating. In this thesis a locking differential is used to overcome this shortcoming, this gives the driver the option to lock the shafts of the driving wheels together. This is done by pushing two cogwheels, one attached to each shaft, together. The aim of this thesis is to shorten the lock- and unlock-time of the locking differential by aligning the cogwheels using the service brakes and available sensors. The results were evaluated by implementing the software in a truck and doing test runs on Scanias test track. These tests showed that the system greatly improved both lock- and unlock-times but at cost of lower driver comfort. With additional work with some fine tuning of the system, the overall performance could probably be increased even more.

Att hantera sömmar i interaktiva system2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine how seams in an interactive system should be managed. Seamsin this study refer to the boundaries that arise when users move between for example differentsoftware, products or positioning systems. These seams are a cornerstone of the relatively unexploredarea called seamful design, which is based on that users can avail highlighted seams through activeparticipation in the use of a system. To analyze this area, seamful design is applied to the developmentof an interface of a smoothie vending machine. This smoothie machine thus provides the analyzedinteractive system, which the research questions are applied to as well as answered by. The researchquestions are infused by seams and seamful design. More specifically, this paper questions how, whenand why these seams should be made visible or hidden. Another question stresses if the visualizationof seams can be applied to a smoothie machine and create distinct advantages in this system.

To accomplish this, the project was divided in three separate phases. The first phase consisted ofexamining the conditions, environment and design of the service and the product. The second phaseconsisted of an iterative creation of concept proposals and usage of related methods. The third andfinal phase involved performing user tests, evaluating the interface and drawing conclusions about theformulated research questions.

The project results are visualized partly by the final interface that was generated, and partly by theresults of the performed user tests during the third phase, which later came to form the basis for theconclusions that arose. The results included the understanding that the visualization of seams have thepotential to increase the task success rate, but at the same time may entail the risk of extending thetime it takes to perform a task. This was distinguished from the result of the test where the user wasgiven the task to place a cup in the machine. In one case, the seam was highlighted, while it was hiddenin the other. An additional result was that users expressed that seams could entail an advantage whenthe system was used repeatedly, while they in situations where they only used the system once, arguedthat it was beneficial to hide the seam because of lack of interest of the additional information.

The conclusions based on this result, included both guidelines of how, when and why it is appropriateto highlight or hide seams, and also the finding that that seamful design has potential to be applied toa smoothie machine with clear benefits. The first of these guidelines implies that seams should behidden in systems which focus on performance and efficiency, as there is a risk that the usage time isprolonged when the seam is highlighted. Another guideline states that seams should be hidden whenmanipulation of the system could entail a serious risk, due to that users in most cases create a deeperunderstanding of the underlying technology when the seams are highlighted. On the contrary, insystems where possible manipulation entails no significant risk, seams may be highlighted to facilitatean individual use of the system. Furthermore, it is advantageous to highlight seams when a repeateduse of the system occurs, because of the fact that many users expressed that they pay greater attentionto seams when they have acquired some familiarity with the interface. Finally, perhaps the mostimportant aspect when a seam is about to be highlighted, is to make sure that the user physically canact and respond to the additional information that comes with the seam.

ATT STYRA ETT SAMTAL: en studie om samtalet mellan programledare och inringande radiolyssnare2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
