Research: ROTHKO: - ett arbete om att lära känna sig själv genom någon annan2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis project examines both inner and outer circumstances of knowledge in an attempt to emphasize the importance of personal reflection. I search for answers on how to communicate feelings through colour and form by studying Mark Rothko and the abstract expressionism. A personal reflection is made parallelly to expand my own understanding of the subject and my own role in relation to it. I also explore painting as amethod of deepening my understanding of Rothko.

Mark Rothko is both subject of study and tutor as I give myself the task of translating his art into my own design.

The result offers thoughts and ideas on the significance of the work of hand, the use of colour and the meaning of intention, which I claim are important aspects when aiming for emotional results. However I also reflect upon the fact that the communication remains individual and that it is therefore problematic to confirm success in this matter.

Stark, starkare, starkast: en jämförelse av fasta tappar och centrumtappar med utgångspunkt i tappens dimensioner, inpassning, komprimering, antal och limning2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

I have in my thesis compared the strength of mortise and tenon joints and dowel joints in wooden furniture. I´ve made the comparison based on five parameters: the dimensions of the tenon or dowel, the fit of the tenon or dowel, the compression of the tenon or dowel, the number of tenons or dowels and the gluing of the tenon or dowel. The bigger question has been, “is the mortise and tenon joint or the dowel joint the strongest?” The goal has been to go through different theories regarding these two types of joinery and making a foundation to help cabinet makers and designers to make conscious decisions regarding their choices of these two types of joinery. Through studies of literature and visiting workshops I´ve gathered knowledge that lies as a foundation for a test of strength of different joinery made in the material testing facility of Linköping University. The test was based on a scenario of joining the back leg and side rim of a chair. The test shows, from the given definitions, that mortise and tenon joints are without exceptions stronger than dowel joints. It also shows that double tenons better will distribute the load and make for a stronger and tougher joint. Dowel joints will get tougher with an increased number of dowels but it will not necessarily make for a stronger joint. The fit and compression of the tenon or dowel will affect the joints strength.

En studie av skador hos stolar från renässansen 1560-tal till biedermeier 1850-tal.: Ett arbete om sambandet mellan konstruktion, material och skadebild.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Through the selection of six representative typical Swedish chairs from each era, I present manufacturing techniques and how the craftsmanship has affected the style of the chairs over time. My main source material is the objects themselves. I chose to analyze the constructions and what can distinguish them apart in techniques, material choices, aesthetics and design. The main part of my work has been to find out what are the most occurring damages and its causes. Most damages from renaissance to biedermeier can be linked to the mortise joint. Through interviews with experienced conservators and with my own experiences as a cabinet maker and conservator, I discuss the concept of the ultimate chair design in terms of stability. I have come to the conclusion that the most solid chair is the eight to twelve framed chairs from the Renaissance, but the chair must be adapted to the intended use.

Stimulerande väntan: Att formge för barnens väntrum inom vårdmiljö2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

After my three years as a student at Malmstens, I have grown an interest towards spatialities and its influence on people. It have subconsciously sought me into situations where furniture becomes something more than sitting, but being multifunctional, smart and having psychological values. In my work Stimulating Waiting I have investigated the situation of children in waiting rooms in health care.

In one of my previous design projects I worked with children's storage furniture, something I thought was very fun and challenging, because children look at the world differently than adults. In my thesis project I want to gain more understanding and deeper knowledge of children's products, as well as the situation the child is in. I have also chosen to explore how a waiting room could look in its spatial design to stimulate the child. My question I have worked with is; How can I create a stimulating situation for children in the healthcare environment?

Through a learning stage where I investigate how children look at rooms, toys and fears, I have acquired experience in designing for children. In my world analysis I have gathered facts about waiting rooms in healthcare and how the requirements for furniture in healthcare looks in different parts of the process. I have also made study visits, conversations with competent people and a survey to gain an insight into how the waiting rooms are used. Based on my inquest, I present a room proposal as well as a furniture group that I designed for the children and their curiosity, where the imagination sets the definition of the objects.

Cellulosalack– partiell bättring av lakuner på cellulosaytbehandlingar2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The reason to write about cellulose lacquer is that from year to year there are more and more furniture withsuch transparent coatings that come to the conservation and restoration workshops. The furniture comesmainly from the 1950´s and 1960´s (when it was one of the most common type of transparent finishes) butalso from the 1920´s and 1930´s. Today the furniture from the 20th century has become antiques and soughtafter on the market. Therefore, they are still valuable with their original coatings that would need to be protectedand preserved. This type of transparent finishes causes many problems for the conservator, but I have concentratedon how to partially improve the lacunae that you can interpret here as a break in continuity, gaps in transparentcoatings (the word comes from Latin – lacuna, lacunae).Earlier, the most common method of restoring a furniture with damaged transparent coatings was toremove the old and add a whole new one. In modern times, it is obvious that it is not very environmentallyfriendly and healthy to clean up and add new nitrate cellulose laquer, with conservation attitude is better torepair old finishes that are original. One should learn how to handle such transparent coatings problems. Therefore, there is a need to find methods and materials that help fill gaps effectively. I have also evaluatedthem based on preserving and restoration ground rules.Through practical experiments, based on written sources as well as on my and my supervisors experiencein this area, I have presented and evaluated some methods of filling lacunae in my bachelor thesis.

Modernisering av ett traditionellt hantverk: utveckling och förenkling av laserskuren intarsia2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this degree project on laser cut marquetry I investigate two problems: The vacuum pressure forfixing the veneer flat, and a better and more quality-proof method for producing marquetry in thelaser machine.Through theoretical research, comparisons and practical experiments, I have come to the conclusionthat the best solution for vacuum fixation is a custom adaptation of Donek Tools’s vacuumtable.Through my comparative tests I found that the desirable quality of the laser cut marquetry isachieved safest through the lasercarbontechnique.

Kvisten som statement: -ett projekt om att tillvarata hela stocken2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My bachelor thesis project is about making Swedish pine better appealing to the Swedish furniture market by altering the pines visual appearance using different sawing techniques. In this report I take a closer look at pine as a traditional furniture making material andspecifically focus on the “pine wave” period during the 1970’s.I also look at how Swedish pine is used today within furniture manufacturing and architecture. To get a better understanding of what people think about pine, I sent out a survey throughsocial media where 81 people ranked a selection of images showing the results from thedifferent sawing techniques I personally tested. Based on the online survey, the results showedthat modified pine, eaven with a large amount of knots, proved to be nearly as appealing as thepine without any knots. Later in my project, I developed a piece of furniture partially based onthe results of the online survey but also based on an element of storytelling to try to change thenegative perception associated with pine.In conclusion, I find that pine has to be carefully redesigned by visually changing thesurface by limiting certain parts of the furniture in order for the pine to visually not be “toooverwhelming”.

FÖRUTSÄGBARHETENS LOV OCH RUTINENS VÄLSIGNELSE: Examensarbete om möbeldesign för människor med psykisk funktionsnedsättning2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this exam project in furniture design is to investigate what special needs persons with neuropsychiatric disorders have – especially those with ADHD and autism – and how furniture design can be of aid, by designing a piece of furniture that can meet some of those needs. I have mainly based my reasonings on books about neuropsychiatric disorders, such as Hallberg and Hallberg (2015) and Hjelmquist (2006), who has interviewed adults with these diagnoses. In this it appears clearly, that people with neuropsychiatric disorders can be helped by creating order and routines in their everyday lives. Order is a basic need for all humans, but this need is extra strong for these individuals. My own previous experience of working with individuals with these diagnoses, confirms the conclusions in all of the literature used in this project. My idea was to design a shelf system with boxes where color and form cooperate to give a sense of order. Color and form are proved to be important tool to create context and logic. While exhibiting and discussing the prototype, I have felt that it is a relevant piece of furniture that serves its purpose. The next step is to perform tests and further examine how the prototype can evolve.

Vakuumfästen för småbitar: Och dess möjligheter för det lilla snickeriet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Förutbestämt och improviserat: Alternativa vägval i en snickares arbetsprocess2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

How do we perceive the influence of the hand on the material in the things that surround us in our everyday life? This is a reflective thesis that addresses questions about the relations between human and machine and discusses our approach to the traces of the human hand and thought in the products we create and use.

In this thesis, I try out a method which main purpose is to clarifiy which parts of the craft I think are most interesting, depending on how you choose to approach it. I have taken the role of the effective carpenter and the improvising carpenter. Based on these two roles I have built 4 stools. In my choices as the effective and the improvising carpenter, I have tried to visualize my own attitudes, values and approaches to my craft.

The result of my survey has shown that there are interesting parts in both ways that I want to work with. Hopefully this thesis can serve to broaden and discuss the view of craftsmanship today.

Grafiska kommunikationsverktyg för tapetseraren: Att enkelt förmedla ett komplext hantverk2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis “Graphic tools of communication - Unfolding the complexity of the upholsterers craft” I examine how upholsterers can use graphic communication to mediate the complex and often hidden handcraft.Handcraft is already hard to charge and the fact that parts of the work is not even visible for the customers does not make the whole thing any easier. What I have become aware of during the process of writing is that this has also been a way for me to prevent the disappearance of the traditional and unique handcraft that upholstery is. By going in to the basics of graphic communication and the different parts that it contains like typography, photography, illustrations and layout, I am given the ability to create a simple and structured template for a printed document which I can give my future customers to inform them about what work has been done on their own piece of furniture. In that way they will become aware of the extensive process that the craft involves and understands what he or she is actually paying for when buying my expertise.I reckon this way of communication can contribute in spreading knowledge about crafts, such as upholstery.

Flexibelt boende: en multifunktionell möbel för begränsad bostadsyta2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The goal in my bachelor thesis has been to create a multifunctional furniture, a product in which the form has followed the function to allow the user variation for the body and practical functions. The purpose of this project has been to encourage reduction of unnecessary furniture within compact living spaces and instead offer better solutions to practical multifunctional furniture.

In my research phase for this project I studied different forms of multifunctional furniture on the market as well as carried out different observational studies of student living and how students generally use their furniture. The first being various visits to different student rums and apartments. The other being a closer study at Malmstens school in which I allowed students to create their own space and interact with the furniture to study how the students used the furniture and how the students sat in the furniture. A basic, yet crucial, survey about multifunctional furniture was sent out to gather information on what people do at home and what type of furniture people prefer if they were to live in a compact space.

The research gathered led to the next phase of the project in which many different sketching techniques, both 2d and 3d, resulted in a multifunctional furniture which offers variation within sitting and practical use. As a result of the analysis a furniture prototype will be built and shown at Malmstens Spring Exhibition and Vallastaden Living and House Society Exhibit in September 2017.

Fausse marqueterie: Infärgning av mönster på fanérade skivor2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

In my thesis project I have investigated different methods for creating colored patterns in veneered surfaces. With practical tests and methods, I have studied different qualities in different approaches as well as compared to the pros and cons of each technique. In turn, I investigate the suitability of different wood types for the purpose, as well as different materials for staining, different fiber cutting techniques and different methods of applying the staining. With a look back in our furniture history, I have collected old surface decoration techniques, focusing on color and veneer, and compared these with more developed and modern techniques. In my survey, I have weighed practical, technical and visual aspects. Comparing these techniques helped me to conclude which alternative seemed the most suitable. I have come to the conclusion that the best-performing method is water based staining on birch veneers with laser cut patterns and the color applied by using stencils and stamps made with synthetic fabrics.

Ta det piano med klaveret: Åtgärdsproblematik vid konservering av hammarklaver från 1770-talet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 credits / 16 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I explore the preservation problems occurring in English square pianos from 1770. I have investigated three aspects:

    1. Which materials do the instruments normally consist of?
    2. Which are the common types of damage?
    3. What conservation ethics are widely considered among instrument conservators and restorers?

With the information from these three questions have I formulated treatment suggestions and general aspects to be aware of when preserving early square pianos. The most important suggestion is not to make any treatment without reflection. It´s also important to be aware of problems regarding storage, humidity, emissions, materials and tuning when preserving an early square piano. I consider these aspects in formulating treatment suggestions to conserve instruments as historical documents and to restore them to playable state. The treatment suggestions can also help and guide conservators without special knowledge of instruments toward better preservation of early square pianos. This thesis aims therefore to improve the care of this fragile cultural heritage.
