Abstract [en]

This article explores the establishment of research centres as manifestations of academic intrapreneurship, thus challenging the assumption that academic intrapreneurship is solely commercially driven, emphasizing the critical role of early stakeholder engagement, funding, strategic partnerships, effective communication and clearly defined roles. The article contributes to the intrapreneurship literature by contextualizing research centre creation as an intrapreneurial process, exploring how universities develop intrapreneurial capabilities, and identifying the challenges intrapreneurs face. Practical implications suggest investing in training and recognition systems to enhance intrapreneurial skills among faculty, staff, and students.

Abstract [en]

In this paper, we investigate the relationship between corporate culture and innovative work behavior, more specifically how corporate culture affects the spawning of female and male intrapreneurs within organizations. Findings from a survey encompassing 4,011 employees in Swedish private companies provide empirical support for adopting a gender sensitive perspective on corporate culture. Our results reveal that a competitive corporate culture tends to foster the emergence of male rather than female intrapreneurs. However, in contexts where corporate culture includes intrapreneurial role models, both males and females are encouraged to step forward, with particularly notable effects on female intrapreneurs, thus facilitating a shift in existing gender schemas. The findings underscore how power dynamics embedded within corporate culture influence innovative work behavior, and emphasize the importance of conceiving culture as a multifaceted determinant of such behavior. We discuss the implications of our findings for the management of intrapreneurship, human resources, and gender equality.

Abstract [en]

Although several studies have extensively discussed the role of intrapreneurs, individuals’ experiences of intrapreneurial processes in the academic context remain largely unexplored. The prominence of intrapreneurial logic in academia has led to increased institutional complexity and highlighting the need for an improved understanding of how to navigate multiple logics present at individual, organizational, and field levels to attain the desired intrapreneurial outcomes. To address these challenges, we propose an integrative framework that captures both organizational and individual-level responses to these multiple logics, while also incorporating intrapreneurial logic. Upon analyzing data from nineteen intrapreneurs across three universities, this study reveals that universities actively uphold the academic logic that intrapreneurs identify as a barrier, compelling them to refine their skills and actively hybridize logics by integrating multiple specific elements of intrapreneurship, teaching, and research. Simultaneously, universities incorporate intrapreneurial logic into their operational processes, even combining multiple logics, which intrapreneurs leverage within their own activities to push their ideas forward. The study offers implications for intrapreneurship literature, academic management, and policymakers to more effectively foster intrapreneurial activities.

Abstract [en]

Many businesses are finding it difficult to strengthen employees’ intentions to engage in intrapreneurial new venturing. In this study, we investigate the organizational conditions that are conducive to the formation of such intentions, specifically employees’ intentions to initiate the development of new products or services in their host corporation. The results from a survey of 3492 employees of Swedish companies, including small, medium-sized, and large firms, reveal that recognizing and rewarding personal achievements, maintaining a risk-taking organizational culture, and top management support are all associated with stronger employee intentions to engage in intrapreneurial new venturing. There is weaker support for the predicted positive effect of personal independence and the presence of intrapreneurial role models. Time availability appears to have an inverted ushaped relationship to employees’ intentions to engage in intrapreneurial new venturing. Overall, the findings support the idea that organizations can be purposefully designed for strengthening intrapreneurial new venturing among their employees.

Abstract [en]

This article analyses the organisational and individual drivers and barriers to the implementation of circular business models (CBM) by incumbents and start-ups in the workwear industry. It is based on a qualitative study of 15 organisations in the Swedish workwear industry. Most incumbents are found to have either long-life models with hybrid elements, such as repair, or access models, while circular start-ups have a larger variety of CBMs, although the most common is gap exploiter. Internal organisational barriers mostly differ between the two groups; however, external organisational barriers are more significant and common, such as the low price of new workwear, a lack of demand and a lack of supporting policies, for example, public procurement. Several organisational drivers are identified, such as opportunities to deliver customer value, textile and digital innovations and environmental concerns. Drivers and barriers are influenced by both type of CBM and type of company. Individual drivers and barriers, which are often overlooked in literature, are found to be important to CBM implementation.

Abstract [en]

The corporate entrepreneurship literature has identifed the importance of intrapre‑neurs for maintaining growth, revitalization, and performance of corporations, butlittle is known about intrapreneurs and how they perceive their corporate workingconditions. The working conditions in the corporation have an efect on employees’behavior. This paper empirically investigates corporate conditions from the individ‑ual’s perspective as well as the types of intrapreneurs that exist. The fndings from acluster analysis of intrapreneurs suggests that there are three types of intrapreneurs:resilient intrapreneurs, neglected intrapreneurs, and privileged intrapreneurs. Over‑all, the fndings show that intrapreneurial behavior and corporate conditions arerelated and that organizations purposefully can design their corporate environmentto support diferent intrapreneurs.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The European Union (EU) has identified textiles as one of the seven key product valuechains that require increased circularity. This report aims to examine potential circularbusiness models and changes to the design of products and services in the workwearindustry from a holistic perspective, including environmental, economic, legal, and providerand customer perspectives. The focus has been on workwear for small and medium-sizedenterprises (SMEs) in the construction and building sectors. In this study, the potential toimplement various design and business model interventions, which could affect resourceconsumption and thus contribute to a more circular economy, were explored.

A key finding is that all the explored interventions, based on LCA findings, are likely toreduce environmental impacts in all examined impact categories compared to a linearmodel. Moreover, no significant legal barriers were identified, although some businessmodels require careful contract drafting. However, several interventions do not lead to“good business” either due to a lack of acceptance by the users or because they are noteconomically viable.

Designing and offering workwear with a long lifespan is a business model that manycompanies are successfully implementing. Most claim that their products are long-lastingwithout a standardized way to measure.

One examined design change that has gained market acceptance and is offered by theproject partner company CIRK-L is the detachable tool pockets, which allow for morefrequent and straightforward washing and thus longer lifespan for workwear.

However, laundry services and all-in-one contracts that also enable more efficient andfrequent washing, are not as well accepted. They prove to be logistically challenging toimplement, mainly because workers frequently change workplaces. They were alsoconsidered too expensive for this customer segment, despite having been successfullyapplied to other segments within the workwear industry. One reason is that the usercurrently bears the costs of transport to the washing facility and washing, while thesecontracts would shift this cost to the employer. Several positive value aspects were foundwith these examined business models, but not enough to outweigh the costs and practicalchallenges.

Repair services based on spare parts that can be replaced by the user, such as the detachablelower legs on work trousers offered by the partner company CIRK-L, are expected to beeconomically viable. As workwear is relatively cheap, repairs involving tailors are onlymarginally more affordable than buying new because labour and shipping costs arerelatively high. This means that the customer prefers to buy new. However, several measures can be taken to improve the situation by addressing behavioural issues related torepairs, making the repair supply chains more efficient. There is also a need to improvesupport systems that enable repairs, e.g., IT and distribution solutions. Some initial pilotprojects and small ventures related to upcycling or repurposing have also been identified, but these require further research.

Finally, consumption patterns for workwear have also been identified, and some signs ofoverconsumption should be studied more closely.

Abstract [en]

At Linköping university, a model to facilitate impact and bridge the gap between research, education, and business creation, has been developed. It is named “ComICIR”, which stands for Commercialization of Innovative Challenges from Industry and Research. The model allows researchers, firms, and students to work in a co-creation process that are built on the following five steps: (1) research validation, (2) idea generation, (3) idea validation, (4) idea evaluation and, (5) innovation strategy. In the paper, we describe the model and analyse how challenges and ideas could be developed and experientially based pedagogical approaches could be adjusted in order to benefit the regional ecosystem of research, education and industry and contribute to reaching increased impact of innovative ideas and ventures. Our main finding is that CBL is beneficial but requires close cooperation between teachers and innovation support actors. Flexibility is needed to fit the purpose of the course as well as the needs of the challenge providers. Hence, challenges need to be categorized and qualified to take into account the aim and scope of the challenge as well as its degree of development as this affects how the challenges should be written and treated to get the best outcome.

Abstract [en]

Multimedia has been integrated in education the last 40 years but podcasts have more recently become popular. Since 2006 podcasts have become increasingly popular in Sweden and nowadays podcasts are used in all types of contexts but are yet to find a place in engineering education. Students do not acquire knowledge or solve problems in the same way. Using a mix of methods in teaching is therefore important if one has the ambition to democratize the learning processes and give students the same opportunity to learn. Traditionally, much of the university education has been based on lectures in classrooms and reading literature. During the pandemic, teachers switched to video lectures and online lectures. Even though all types of multimedia are involved in teaching today, podcasts have not become established as a learning method. This paper explores in what ways podcasts can be beneficial in engineering education. Specifically, the paper investigates what preferences students have on how podcasts for engineering education and how teachers effectively can design and develop podcasts in courses as a learning method. By addressing the gap of evidence on podcasts in engineering education, the findings contribute with effective solutions on how podcasts can be developed and implemented that will help students in their learning processes. © 2023 SEFI 2023 - 51st Annual Conference of the European Society for Engineering Education: Engineering Education for Sustainability, Proceedings.
