Abstract [en]

Biomethane production is expected to expand to meet the growing demand for renewable, secure, and locally available energy sources. Among available production technologies, anaerobic digestion (AD) plays a key role by supporting sustainable development through resource recovery, organic waste management, and biofertilizer production. However, carbon management within AD-based systems can be further improved. During biogas upgrading, biogenic CO₂, which accounts for around 30–50% of the biogas composition, is typically separated and emitted to the atmosphere. Integrating CO₂ utilization alternatives could enhance the system and support defossilization by enabling its direct use or conversion into value-added carbon-based products. Despite this potential, knowledge regarding the feasibility and performance of such alternatives remains limited.

This thesis evaluates viable CO₂ utilization alternatives in AD-based biomethane production systems to support decision making, using Sweden as an example. A multi-criteria analysis framework was developed and applied to identify and compare relevant alternatives. Moreover, contextual factors influencing the deployment of CO₂ utilization were examined. In addition, a lifecycle perspective was used to assess the environmental and economic performance of integrating CO₂ utilization alternatives in AD-based biomethane production.

The results indicate that methanation, liquefied CO₂, horticulture, and mineral carbonates are the most viable alternatives in the short term comparedto other chemicals and fuels. Nevertheless, low certainty and diverse factors likesensitivity to impurities, energy requirements, potential regulations, andstandards to meet hinder their implementation.Although CO₂ utilization is technically compatible with AD systems, uncertainties related to plant scale, dispersion, and overall system configuration hinder deployment and complicate cost estimations. Favorable market conditions, improved environmental performance, and resource efficiency act as drivers for implementation, whereas uncertain policy landscape, high costs, pricing, market uncertainty, and infrastructure constraints remain key barriers.

Compared to carbon capture and storage, feasible CO₂ utilization alternatives can potentially reduce the climate impact while also improving performance in other environmental categories. Among the alternatives, methanation significantly improves climate performance by increasing the biomethane yield but requires low-carbon-intensity electricity for hydrogen production. Furthermore, liquefied CO₂ reduces climate impact mainly by replacing fossil-based CO₂ and does not impose a significant economic burden on biomethane plants. However, it requires additional purification and faces market size constraints.

The high concentration of biogenic CO₂ from AD-based biomethane production makes it an attractive resource for utilization. Nevertheless, a systems perspective is essential when assessing its integration. While several utilization alternatives are technically feasible and can potentially improve environmental performance, their implementation depends strongly on technical conditions and broader contextual factors. Clear policy frameworks and targeted market incentives are crucial to accelerate CO₂ utilization deployment.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Utilization of biogenic CO₂ (bio-CO₂) presents a promising strategy to combat climate change while making use of renewable resources. However, it is an early stage market. This study therefore aims to explore the barriers and drivers for bio-CO₂ utilization and their implications for shaping the bio-CO₂ market, using Sweden as an example due to its diverse bio-CO₂ sources and existing initiatives. Twenty-four actors were interviewed, representing different types of market actors, which enabled differences between actors to be identified. For example, producers emphasized economic and market-related barriers, while users addressed uncertainties related to the supply chain and quality requirements. Among the key barriers identified are an uncertain policy landscape, as well as economic and market-related barriers that hinder bio-CO₂ utilization. Improving environmental performance is identified as a key driver for bio-CO₂ utilization but requires overcoming barriers such as high costs and payback requirements to become enacted. Other identified key drivers are the potential for new market opportunities for CO₂, such as e-fuel production, and an increased interest in bio-CO₂ over its fossil-based counterpart. There is a need for a diverse set of actions to support the development of the bio-CO₂ market, such as long-term, stable policies and regulations that support investment and market creation, along with better coordination among governmental organizations. This study thus contributes a holistic perspective on the prerequisites for bio-CO₂ utilization by exploring barriers and drivers for bio-CO₂ from different market actor perspectives and identifying policy implications, using Sweden as a case study. Future research can explore other regions and strategies.

Abstract [en]

Biogas production from waste biomass can create many sustainability-related benefits. However, the CO₂ produced in the process is rarely put to use, although it is often pure and could potentially add value and improve the climate performance if utilized or stored. This study applies life cycle assessment methodology to estimate the overall environmental performance of a biogas system including utilization (CCU) or storage (CCS) of CO₂, comparing six different utilization options and geological storage. The results show that CCU can improve many aspects of the environmental performance of biogas, for example by using CO₂ with renewable hydrogen to produce methane or methanol, as the CO₂ from biogas production can then replace fossil-based processes. Meanwhile, CCS only reduces the climate impact, but increases environmental impact in all other studied categories, as it requires additional processes to treat the CO₂. Utilizing CO₂ from biogas, on the other hand, could be an instrument in the work towards a bioeconomy with reduced fossil resource dependence and improved environmental sustainability. © 2024, ETA-Florence Renewable Energies. Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Biogas solutions offer many benefits for the environment and society, including organic waste treatment as well as being an enabler for energy and nutrient recovery. The products of anaerobic digestion are a biogas, which contains a share of 30 to 50% carbon dioxide (CO2) and 50 to 70% methane, and a liquid remanent, rich in nutrients. The biogas can be upgraded by removing the CO2 to increase the energy content, producing biomethane. At present, CO2 is considered a waste in biomethane production systems, and hence it is emitted into the atmosphere. Nevertheless, biogas upgrading technologies separate a pure-grade CO2 and, likewise, carbon capture processes, providing a pure CO2 flow that can be stored or utilized. Compared to storage, carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies deliver valuable carbon-based products required to sustain human activities. The valorization of green CO2 could aid the transition towards defossilization of the economy. Indeed, several CO2 utilization technologies could be incorporated into biomethane production systems, but there is still a limited understanding of the available alternatives and their potential impacts on biomethane systems.

This thesis aims to investigate the integration of CO2 utilization technologies in biomethane production systems by revealing its potential, identifying alternatives, and assessing the impacts of the integration. Using Sweden as an example, scenarios of future biomethane production were employed to estimate the potential CO2 available for utilization. To complement the analysis, a qualitative approach made possible the identification of aspects that could affect CO2 utilization in biomethane production. Moreover, a multi-criteria analysis (MCA) framework was developed to identify relevant indicators for assessment and available alternatives for CO2 utilization. The research also includes a life cycle assessment (LCA) to evaluate the climate performance of relevant CCU alternatives in the biomethane production system.

Results show that 160 kt of CO2 could be obtained from biomethane production in Sweden, which could potentially increase threefold from 2020 to 2030. The evaluation of alternatives for CO2 utilization includes environmental, technical, economic, and social criteria with sound indicators within an MCA framework. Indicators to evaluate each criterion provide valuable information to identify feasible and sustainable alternatives that can be integrated into biomethane plants. The identified alternatives with a high readiness level are additional methane through methanation, horticulture, mineral carbonates, fuels, pH control, bulk chemicals, and liquefied CO2 for direct use. The results provide information to decision-makers in relation to considerations to take before implementation, like energy requirements, the existence of regulations and standards, and uncertainty. In terms of the climate performance of biomethane with the inclusion of CCU alternatives, the results show a possible reduction of CO2 emissions that depends on the possibility of substituting fossil-based products. The investigated alternatives all result in lower emissions, but concrete curing and methanation using renewable hydrogen produce the best results.

To conclude, the potential future increase of green CO2 from biomethane in Sweden creates opportunities to substitute fossil carbon in current applications and mature conversion pathways. Moreover, the inclusion of CCU in biomethane production contributes to reducing biomethane system emissions and diversifying its products. Possible alternatives of CCU that can be integrated into biomethane production systems in the short term include methanation and concrete curing. Other alternatives could be possible but present lower performance and higher uncertainties at the moment.

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) has a negative impact on the climate, but it also has several practical areas of use. Many industrial processes emit CO₂ in high concentrations, which could be captured to mitigate emissions while also creating valuable products. One example of such a process is biogas upgrading – a process separating renewable gases, where methane is taken care of for use as vehicle fuel or industrial energy carrier, while CO₂ is released into the atmosphere. The aim of this project has been to chart alternatives and technologies for taking care of green CO₂ from biogas upgrading, so-called carbon capture and utilization (CCU), and to investigate the conditions for applying these in a Swedish context. The work has been guided by the following research questions:

  • How large is the current and future potential for CCU from biogas production?
  • What are the possible areas of use for CO₂ from biogas production?
  • What factors influence the choice of areas of use for CO₂ from biogas production?
  • How large is the environmental benefit of CCU from biogas production?

To answer these questions, calculations of potentials, a multi-criteria assessment and a life cycle assessment were carried out, based on the Swedish biogas production. A reference group comprising representatives for large Swedish companies within biogas production and biogas upgrading technology was used to enable coproduction and networking between the research group and the business sector.

The production of CO₂ from biogas was estimated to 160,000 ton/year in 2020, with potential to increase to 540,000 – 840,000 ton/year in a few years and 790,000 – 1,230,000 ton/year in a longer perspective, as a consequence of an expected increase in the Swedish biogas production. A large share of the CO₂ is however produced at relatively small upgrading facilities, which could limit the feasibility for CCU due to high costs for investment and operation. Adding hydrogen to transform all the CO₂ into methane could potentially increase the methane production from biogas from 2 to 3 TWh/year in a short-term perspective and from 11 to 17 TWh/year in a long-term perspective, given sufficient access to hydrogen.

Other ways of utilizing CO₂ from biogas include production of biomass or chemicals, concrete curing, pH control of process water and use as a refrigerant. The choice of CCU options can be influenced by environmental, technical, economic and policy-related aspects. From the biogas producers’ perspective, methanation is the option that is the most compatible with the existing production system and business model, while other solutions usually involve another actor taking care of the CO₂. Hydrogen is required for methanation as well as for production of chemicals. Another limiting factor are the high purity requirements on all CO₂ that is distributed and sold on the market. The geographical distribution of the production plants can also be a challenge.

Several CCU options can improve the environmental performance of biogas by replacing fossil-based products. The potential climate impact is the lowest if the CO₂ is methanized with renewable hydrogen or mineralized in concrete, but other forms of environmental impact can also be reduced by applying these or other CCU options. For comparison, permanent storage of CO₂ in geological formations (carbon capture and storage, CCS) only reduces the climate impact, while it increases other forms of environmental impact. Furthermore, permanently storing biogenic CO₂ can make it difficult to reduce the use of fossil CO₂ and transition to a more sustainable society. The need for carbon in many essential processes and products suggests that biogenic CO₂ should be utilized and not stored.

Abstract [en]

Carbon capture and utilization has been proposed as an essential climate change mitigation strategy, but only a few implemented cases exist. During biomethane production from anaerobic digestion, CO₂ is commonly separated and emitted into the atmosphere, which can be utilized as raw material for various products. This research aims to identify and assess CO₂ utilization alternatives for possible integration with biogas upgrading from anaerobic digestion by developing a soft multi-criteria analysis (MCA). A literature review complemented with stakeholder participation enabled the identification of relevant alternatives and criteria for assessment. Potential alternatives for CO₂ utilization include methane, mineral carbonates, biomass production, fuels, chemicals, pH control, and liquefied CO₂. Results show that although no alternative performs well in all indicators, there is an opportunity for short-term implementation for methane, biomass production, mineral carbonates, liquefied CO₂, and pH control. Moreover, the uncertainty analysis reveals that even though the technologies have a high technological development, more information on critical aspects is still required. The soft MCA provides information to decision-makers, practitioners, and the academic community on learning opportunities of the alternatives and indicators to step from development into implementation. For instance, the method can be used to assess more specific systems with different locations and scales or to direct efforts to ease the implementation of CCU.
