Abstract [en]

In Sweden, as in many countries, welfare services are a responsibility of the municipal authorities and they increasingly implement digital technologies, such as real-time monitoring of older adult. Implementing welfare technological artifacts appears appealing for Swedish municipalities and there is strong rhetorical support for welfare technology, both nationally and within the EU to harness the possibilities of digitalization. Swedish municipalities are consequently expected to use digitalization to manage a multitude of issues related to an aging population, such as limited resources, retaining and recruiting healthcare professionals, and fiscal stress. In this context, digital technologies and the digital transformation are presented as having potential for leveraging existing resources and making required service delivery more efficient. This study builds on interviews with nurses in a small Swedish municipality who are responsible for implementing and maintaining the sociotechnical network surrounding welfare technology. In our analysis we make use of the folktale of a traveler who promises to cook a rich soup of a single iron nail, which actually requires more ingredients. In our study we show how the nurses are pooling limited resources with welfare technology through their everyday work, and care, maintain and share in the sociotechnical system. The nurses work as combined technicians (installing the alarms and night watch cameras) and caregivers save the municipality money as they can handle and solve technical issues that consultants would do otherwise.

Abstract [en]

The presentation was part of a roundtable discussion, The Dis/comfort of Teaching Anthropology organized with Corinna Kruse and Johanna Dahlin.

Many of us teach in courses and programs that are not specifically in anthropology, often through methods courses. While the familiar may be comfortable to us, teaching the (comfortably) familiar in a different context may lead to discomfort: We may be uncomfortable about being asked to teach ethnographic methods within a very limited timeframe (as for example through a single lecture), we may feel apprehensive about methods becoming stripped of their context and perspective, we may even feel that we’re selling out. Our students may be uncomfortable with being asked to learn things they perceive as irrelevant or quaint, and they may be very uncomfortable with being asked to challenge certainties.

This panel aspires to be a roundtable format that includes the audience. It starts off with vignettes and then invites the audience into a conversation about bridging the gap between disciplines and worldviews, about the comforts of anthropology, and our – and our students’ – discomfort when familiarity is disrupted. What makes us un/comfortable, whose dis/comfort do we notice, and what does that teach us (and our students)?

Abstract [en]

This teaching material on interdisciplinarity in technology and social change contains several entries in alphabetical order. We start this manual on interdisciplinarity with a zero to open up for a critical approach to classifications, scientific practice, technology, and knowing. At the library, books on interdisciplinarity are cataloged as 000. If written out, the number is spelled with a z and put last in the English alphabet. The zero revolutionized counting and mathematical studies, and the binary of 0 and 1 is a fundamental aspect of our data-driven and extensively interconnected lives. The 0 can be used as a binary to 1 in mathematical theory and as a measurement. At absolute zero temperature, all atoms are still as ontological transformations can be “rendered through heating and cooling” (Boyer 2018: 227), similar to disciplining and undisciplining processes. The organization of the material in this booklet on interdisciplinarity draws inspiration from various sources. One such source is the innovative novel Hopscotch by the Argentine author Julio Cortázar. Cortázar encourages the reader to be active and decide which chapters to start with, allowing for potentially disordered reading. Similarly, the entries in this dictionary can be read in any order, with each order potentially offering a new meaning to the content and ideas expressed here. The Department of Thematic Studies (TEMA) at Linköping University is well-known for its interdisciplinary research and training. The department was established in 1980, with Tema Technology and Social Change (TEMA T) being one of its first thematic units. The activities at the unit are not only focused on PhD training; the staff are also involved in teaching, research, and national and international collaborations. While this text covers many aspects of interdisciplinarity in the department, it should not be seen as comprehensive.

Abstract [en]

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) implies teaching about how to change or transform the world to become more sustainable, and to challenge status quos. This includes that students shall develop abilities to critically examine how different actors present information in different formats, with the aim of influencing society. However, this is a complex terrain to navigate in for educators, and questions regarding accuracy, fact acquisition, assessing information and source criticism have become particularly important. In a previous study, free teaching materials directed to education about sustainable development were analysed. The analyses show that the stakeholders claim that they already take responsibility; there is no reason to worry, since the challenges humanity faces can be solved with various technical solutions. An implicit message is that no lifestyle changes are needed. Based on these results, the aim is to outline how to research ESD further, amidst a planetary crisis, climate change, technological solutions, and evolving information battles. An interdisciplinary pilot study will be performed. It will be composed of a survey sent to teacher students, and students in strategic planning and global studies, where they will be faced with scenarios including dilemmas.

Abstract [en]

In this presentation we describe and motivate the work with 'personas' to train students in becoming reflective practitioners. The example is given from an assignment we have worked with at a program in Strategic urban and regional planning, where students should be prepared to imagine alternative futures, not the least when elaborating on sustainability transitions in society, and need to manage complex problems and motivate interventions; Thus, university teachers need to train students to develop such competencies and skills. Persona builds on design thinking and is sometimes used in a development project to imagining who planners plan for (users/citizens), and their different needs and perspectives. We discuss how this imaginative capacity is used alongside artificial intelligence tools. Our experience from teaching this assignment during several years is that it enhances collaborative learning (among students, and teachers – students). During the seminars where they get to read and comment on each others’ work, the persona becomes like an object to gather around (in distinction to a regular paper), enables discussions about fears, prejudices, public adminstration and professional life etc. The persona gives the students a possibility to reflect their own worries or expectations without exposing themselves.

Abstract [en]

We analyse the action space for strategic planning and sustain-ability transition among planners in Swedish municipalities. We use qualitative and quantitative materials from 103 survey responses obtained from Swedish municipal planners. Our analysis shows that the size and type (e.g. population and density) of the municipality where the planners work are connected to their perceived action space, where policies for densely populated cities are less relevant for rural municipalities. Even if size matters for the action space for sustainability transition, this action space can be modified (e.g. access to resources and participation in networks) and continuously constructed.

Abstract [en]

Closed-loop supply chains (CLSCs) are an important response to pressing sustainability challenges. However, they bring about tradeoffs like increased resource use in logistics. Addressing these complexities, digital platforms emerge as promising, yet under-researched, tools for efficiency enhancement in CLSCs. This study investigates three digital platforms facilitating furniture and household item trade in relation to CLSCs. A comprehensive framework, rooted in literature on CLSCs, digital platforms, and logistics, guides the analysis. The findings reveal diverse sustainability potentials within these platforms, primarily driven by system design, scale, and actor engagement. The efficacy of the digital platform varies based on usage patterns, their geographical scope, logistic solutions, and providers. Crucially, environmental and social sustainability tradeoffs and benefits come to light, offering insights into their emergence based on system design. This study provides insights for practitioners and scholars, regarding potentials/risks of trade-offs in environmental and social sustainability dimensions related to the use of digital platforms for trading secondhand furniture. It provides a nuanced understanding of how these differ depending on system design.

Abstract [sv]
