Exposure to emotionally arousing sounds impairs visual search

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate whether presentation of task-irrelevant auditory stimuli during a visual search task facilitates or impairs visual attention as a function of arousal induced by the auditory stimuli. Data was collected using a visual search task with auditory induced arousing sounds. Participants performed a visual search task in four different blocks; with and without auditory-cues that either preceded the search, was onset simultaneously in the search array or asynchrony in relation to the search array. The sample consisted of a total of 28 individuals. Participants were faster at locating high-salient targets compared to low-salient targets. Search times increased with increasing auditory-induced arousal only when presented simultaneously in the search array while searching for low-salient targets, which means that participants were slower when solving tasks induced with mid-arousal sounds and even slower when high-arousal sounds were induced. The results did not find any support for attentional facilitation in a visual search task due to exposure to emotionally arousing auditory stimuli. However, auditory cues with high arousal will impair visual task performance when task-irrelevant auditory cues and visual stimuli are presented simultaneous in a visual search task, indicating that affective sounds can have negative impact on visual attention when competition for attention is increased.
