Development of Total Cost of Ownership Model to Evaluate Electrification of Heavy-Duty Truck Transportation : A Study in Electrified Trucks (English)
Abstract [en]
The market for heavy-duty electric trucks is currently in an expansion phase, and many Swedish hauliers face the decision of electrifying their next truck. However, this investment decision is complicated by high costs of vehicles, charging infrastructure, and electricity, as well as a lack of knowledge and expertise in creating reliable cost calculations. The organization Closer, through the REEL project, has therefore provided the task of developing a calculation model that compares the Total Cost of Ownership for heavy-duty electric and diesel trucks. This model is intended to support Swedish hauliers in their decision-making process for investments in heavy-duty trucks for their regional transports.
The purpose of the study is thus to design a practically applicable Total Cost of Ownership model that compares investments in electric and diesel trucks for Swedish hauliers' heavy-duty regional transports. Practically applicable is defined as a model that can be implemented for the majority of Swedish hauliers' operations.
The study is partly based on a literature review, where relevant costs associated with electric and diesel trucks have been identified. These costs were then validated with 15 participants within the REEL-project to compare how the literature describes cost differences between electric and diesel trucks versus how transport operators perceive their costs. During these interviews, cost data for both electric and diesel trucks were aggregated to obtain representative standard values for Swedish hauliers' heavy regional transport. An additional interview study with 14 participants was conducted to map out the nodal structures and charging strategies used by the operators and how these would be incorporated into the Total Cost of Ownership model.
During the interview study, it was found that several costs associated with both electric and diesel trucks contrast with the scientific literature. Examples of these costs include tire wear, maintenance costs, and downtime costs. Several of the interviewed parties stated that there was no difference between electric and diesel trucks in these respects, which contradicts the claims made in the literature.
Aggregated cost data from the interviews formed the basis for the selected standard values, resulting in a Total Cost of Ownersship of 13.9 MSEK for electric trucks and 15.2 MSEK for diesel trucks, a difference of 8.3 percent over the entire lifespan of the investment. The costs that most significantly affected the outcome were the energy costs for electricity and diesel, as well as the extent of charging infrastructure costs included. Additional factors influencing the result were residual value and daily mileage.
The Total Cost of Ownership model includes all costs discussed by the interviewed parties. In addition to the more obvious direct costs, such as those for maintenance, tires, personnel, electricity, diesel, and charging infrastructure, the model also includes indirect costs. These indirect costs consist of, among other things, increased administration costs, lost of payload capacity, downtime during charging, and electricity transmission loss. This ensures that the model accounts for the unique conditions of all Swedish haulers, making it a practically useful decision-making tool for investing in electric trucks.
