Abstract [en]

This study investigated the effects of a fraction concept understanding intervention with six fifth-grade students with special educational needs in mathematics. Explicit instruction and CRA were cornerstones in the intervention program, with a specific focus of fraction as measurement. A single case study with a multiple baseline across student design was used. The results revealed a functional relation between intervention and fraction concept knowledge in four cases. However, all six students maintained their scores on the fraction magnitude understanding measure at a 6-week follow-up. Additionally, all participating students improved their scores on a generalization measure of fraction concept knowledge, assessed both before and after the intervention. The findings reveal that a series of nine lessons fraction intervention supports fraction learning for students with diverse characteristics, but with similar mathematical struggles and special educational needs in mathematics.

Students' knowledge of fractions : Theoretical assumptions and the effects of instructional interventions in grade 5
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to test the central assumptions of the Integrated theory of numerical development regarding learning the magnitude of numbers, specifically fractions. It also aims to examine the practical implications of these assumptions through various teaching interventions conducted in a Swedish grade 5 school context. This thesis comprises four studies, focusing on two key aspects: how pupils’ mathematical knowledge may develop, and how their understanding and learning of fractions can be effectively supported. This was examined through two correlational studies (Studies 1 and 2) and two intervention studies in different educational settings (Studies 3 and 4).

All four studies support the theory’s core assumptions: that knowledge of number magnitude, both for whole numbers and fractions, correlates with and predicts arithmetic proficiency. These relationships shift somewhat when the conceptualization of fractions as part-whole mediates the relation between whole numbers and fractions. However, when logical and spatial abilities are included, no association between whole numbers and fractions is observed, which contrasts with the theory’s basic assumptions. The two intervention studies demonstrate positive effects on students’ understanding of fractions when instruction emphasizes the conceptualization of fractions as measurements and number magnitudes. These outcomes strengthen the theory’s foundational assumptions and suggest causal relationships.

This thesis contributes knowledge about the effects of two fraction-focused interventions implemented as instructional support in a Swedish school context, both at the whole-class level and individually. It shows that teachers can successfully implement structured, targeted interventions with high quality, leading to improved learning outcomes, particularly for students experiencing difficulties in mathematics. All four studies provide support to the theory and indicate that explicit, number-line-centered instruction focusing on the conceptualization of fractions as measurement enhances both conceptual understanding and arithmetic skills involving fractions.
