“It Would Be Good to Have Two Lessons a Week About Periods" : A Qualitative Interview Study on Experiences of the Menstrual Cycle in Swedish Compulsory School (English)
Abstract [en]

This study explores how menstruation affects secondary school students’ experiences in the Swedish school environment and how societal norms and institutional structures (and silences) shape their expressions and understandings. Grounded in Critical Menstruation Studies, body-focused feminist theories, stigma theory, and the concept of the hidden curriculum, the paper analyses interview data from nine cisgender girls in grades 8–9 at a municipal school in Östergötland, Sweden. Using discourse analysis, the research highlights how students both challenge and reproduce dominant norms around menstruation. The findings reveal recurring patterns shaped by institutional and commercial influences, as well as personal insights into the body, identity, intimacy and relations. Participants described menstrual education as severely lacking in both primary and secondary school.
