Abstract [en]

This work defines topological properties and aspects of merge trees which are relevant for detection of topological symmetry in merge tree representations of crystalline materials. For this, three distinct perspectives on symmetry axes have been defined which are relevant in differentiating symmetry in different contexts. Namely, explicit axis, semi-implicit axis and implicit axis. It further motivates why symmetry detection approaches based on explicit axis perspective are not applicable to the context of topological structures in crystals due to the rearranging of initially symmetrical hierarchies. Instead, an alternative method based on implicit axis perspective is suggested for detecting symmetries in merge tree representations of crystalline materials. It is also evaluated why merge tree representations only support partial detection of specific larger structures such as chains and layers in crystals.

Abstract [sv]

Detta arbete definierar topologiska egenskaper och aspekter av merge-träd som är av relevans för identifikation av symmetrier i merge-trädrepresentationer av kristalliska material. För detta ändamål definierades tre distinkta perspektiv på symmetriaxlar som används för att särskilja symmetri i olika kontexter. Dessa perspektiv innefattar explicit axel, semi-implicit axel, samt implicit axel. Arbetet motiverar vidare varför tillvägagångssätt för symmetridetektion baserad på ett explicit axel-perspektiv inte är tillämpningsbart på kontexten av topologiska strukturer i kristaller till följd av dessa förändrar de initialt symmetriska strukturerna. Istället föreslås en metod baserad på ett implicit axel-perspektiv för att detektera symmetrier i merge-trädrepresentationer av kristalliska material. Det utvärderas även varför merge-trädrepresentationer endast möjliggör delvis detektion av specifika större strukturer såsom kedjor och lager i kristaller.
