Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate whether the gender of the leader affects the perception of leadership in an acute first aid situation. The study additionally seeks to investigate if story completion is an appropriate method to use in studies such as this one. Using the story completion method, participants were asked to write a continuation of a scenario involving an accident with either a male or female leader. A total of 25 participants’ responses were analyzed through a thematic analysis where four overarching themes were identified: Internal resources and driving forces for motivation, Practical action and problem solving, Leadership and coordination, and Emotional reactions and psychological barriers. The results showed small but visible differences between how male and female leaders were described, with male leader more often portrayed as decisive and competent, and female leaders as more cooperative and empathic in their actions. The study further suggests that story completion has the potential to be a useful method for exploring differences in leadership in a hypothetical first aid situation, but that it requires careful design to reduce the number of unwanted responses and interpretations. The study contributes to research on gender and leadership, as well as knowledge about the usage of story completion in acute first aid situations.
