"Utöver det gäller bara sunt förnuft" : Kombinerandet av Word Rain och tematisk analys för att förstå folkpsykologiska fenomen (Swedish)
Abstract [en]
The concept of common sense is a multifaceted one. As a linguistic expression it can be used in a wide variety of everyday situations, and more specifically it has also found its way into political rhetoric. However, the place of common sense, and other phenomena of folk psychology, within cognitive science is up for debate. Is it scientific enough? Is it really worth studying? In any case, it seems common sense is founded on shared understanding between people. As such, to examine this largely language-based concept, it is appropriate to study naturally occurring interaction between people. The present study looked closer at forum posts from the Swedish online discussion forum Flashback Forum to try and understand how the discourse around the expression common sense (Swe. sunt förnuft ) worked in that setting. An NLP analysis using Word Rain visualisations was performed on linguistically annotated sentences from Flashback Forum posts provided by Språkbanken Text. Apart from visualisation images, Word Rain also provided a collection of statistically context-representative sentences that a thematic analysis could be performed on. The thematic analysis illustrated four themes in the data, each presenting a distinct way that users talked about common sense. These themes could largely be related to the history of common sense and its everyday and political uses. Aside from examining the results, the discussion argued for folk psychology deserving a place within cognitive science despite its limitations. As a method for studying folk psychology, NLP and specifically Word Rain were found to be excellent choices.
