User testing of a pump system for bleeding control in an educational context (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
One of the leading causes of injury-related deaths is severe bleedings. Bleedings of this magnitude can cause death within minutes, and therefore it is important that the bleeding is either stopped or controlled as soon as possible. In such cases the injured often bleeds out before they are aided by professionals, placing the responsibility for bleeding control on bystanders. Due to this, the concept Stop the Bleed was introduced with the aim of spreading knowledge about bleeding control measures to the public. A prototype of a pump system was developed by Linköping University students together with the Centre for teaching & research in disaster medicine and traumatology (KMC) in Linköping, in order to improve bleeding control education. This study is a mixed-method field study with the purpose of evaluating how the pump system works as a part of a bleeding control course for healthcare professionals at KMC. Observations, semi-structured interviews, and a survey were used to explore the participants' experiences of using the pump system. A thematic analysis was conducted to summarize the participants' insights and reflections of the pump system as a tool within the course. The results showed that the participants valued the increased realism and instant feedback that the pump system provided, however some technical issues were identified with the prototype’s physical properties and accompanying interface. As a result, suggestions for improvements were developed to increase the potential of the pump system in educational contexts. Further research is recommended to explore how the pump system is experienced by novices and on larger scales.
