Abstract [en]

Reading graphs is a skill taught as early as elementary school, but what happens when sight is not enough to navigate the world? In an increasingly complex society, technology can be more helpful than ever -- if used correctly. Sonification has the potential to aid those with visual impairments, but also the general public. However, the public currently lacks auditory literacy, limiting the usefulness of sonification in practice. Therefore, this project explored how sonification can not only make society more accessible but also how to make the concept of sonification itself accessible to the public. To do this, an interactive installation was developed for Visualization Center C. The development followed an iterative process where system development in JavaScript and SuperCollider was combined with sound design in Logic Pro and multiple user studies. These included expert evaluations, a questionnaire focused on sound design, and an observational study 'in the wild' at the center. The resulting installation is a web-based single-page application with two navigation paths: one educational and one exploratory. The educational path provides guidance and examples, while the exploration page allows users to design their own sonification based on four parameters: tempo, pitch, sound level, and a short melody (earcon), each allowing two opposite mappings as well as the option to disable each parameter. The user studies showed that tempo/rhythm was the most intuitive parameter for determining distance. They also indicated that the installation maintained a logical structure with intuitive interactions. However, the observational study revealed that the physical setup must be further refined to be effective in a public space. It also suggested that the balance between entertainment and education should place greater emphasis on interactive engagement to effectively communicate the underlying educational message. The project demonstrates how interactive public installations can support the development of auditory literacy while simultaneously increasing awareness of accessibility challenges in public transport.
