When Mathematics Hides in the Text : A Literature Study on Problem-Solving Methods and Teaching Strategies Linked to Word Problems in Mathematics Education (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This literature review investigates which problem-solving methods and strategies students can use when working with mathematical word problems, as well as which teaching strategies teachers can use to support students in this process. The study is based on a systematic literature study in which articles were identified through database searches in ERIC and UniSearch. The selected articles were then analyzed through a thematic analysis. The results identified four overarching themes: language, the use of digital tools, mathematical representations and teachers' teaching strategies. The result shows that students can use strategies such as retelling the word problem in their own words, creating personal och mathematical connections, asking questions, dividing the word problem into smaller parts, visualizing the word problem by creating pictorial and schematic representations and using digital tools. Students can also use the C-C model or a problem-solving model that involves dividing problem solving into two phases. Teachers can use strategies such as introducing the task without numbers and the question itself and asking students questions. Furthermore, teachers should teach about mathematical language and key concepts, work with language and reading comprehension and focus on practicing students' deep reading skills. In teaching, teachers can use different colors, diagrams and different forms of representation that can support students. Finally, teachers should teach strategies and teach students about the C-C model and about the two phases of problem solving.
