Budding history teaching : History teaching in the preschool manner (English)
Abstract [en]

The thesis uses an ethnographically inspired explorative approach to study history teaching at three different preschools in Sweden. The theoretical strand combines aesthetics in the form of sensitive knowledge with concepts developed from history didactics and Play-Responsive Early Childhood Education and Care theory. The results show how history is re-interpreted and adjusted to Swedish preschool pedagogy, where children between 1 and 6 years participate actively in varying activities related to historical knowledge. The notion of "budding history teaching" was developed to describe and conceptualize the observed teaching practices. The concept encompasses an interdisciplinary subject area regarding the past that uses aesthetics in the form of sensitive knowledge and narrations in planned as well as spontaneous activities. Narrative events, often supported by physical artefacts, served to structure and consolidate joint experiences. During the activities, teachers would use artefacts to stimulate children’s sensations, thereby promoting their imaginary capacities to picture events in the past. In this way, a range of artefacts were used to help children move beyond their lifetime by imagining past events. Additionally, Budding history teaching engages with questions concerning the production and dissemination of historical knowledge.

In sum, the thesis demonstrates that history teaching is being carried out in Swedish preschools with children as young as one year old, even though it is only indirectly acknowledged in the curriculum. It underscores the need for further research into the how, what, and why of history teaching in early childhood education settings. It also argues for the need of professional development among Swedish preschool teachers. Such initiatives should provide both subject knowledge and didactic knowledge, carefully aligned with the preschool pedagogical tradition, to create teaching that is meaningful for children and supports their development.
