Measures for reducing and withstanding variations in parcel volume : A case study of a last-mile logistician (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The client in this study has expressed an interest in anonymity and will henceforth be referred to as “the Company”. The service that the Company offers is a modern last-mile logistics service within the e-commerce market, more precise, home delivery. As the e-commerce market is campaign-driven, the consumption patterns are irregular and unpredictable which has entailed that the Company experiences tangible variations in the parcel volume. As a consequence, the Company has showed interest in investigating whether the strategies that the Company currently applies to handle the variations in parcel volume corresponds to the strategies and principles that are being discussed academically. The investigation aims to examine if there are any additional strategies that fit the delivery service the Company offers. Thus, the purpose of this study has been to suggest recommendations on strategies and principles that the Company could apply to manage variations in parcel volume.

The theoretical frame of reference that underlies the study consists of three main areas. The first main area consists of central concepts and theories that are of importance for the understanding of the study. Furthermore, the remaining two main areas intend to present strategies and principles in how variations and uncertainties can be managed, where these are divided to if it is an effort to reduce or an effort to withstand variations and uncertainties in demand. As some of the strategies are used in other logistical areas than last-mile logistics, for instance manufacturing, it is difficult to apply a holistic approach from a strategy. Therefore, these two main areas consist of selected principles within these strategies that could be applied to manage variations in parcel volume.

The collection of empirical data was conducted to investigate whether, or to what extent, the Company uses the principles within these strategies. Based on the frame of reference, the empirical data was analyzed to identify whether there is any potential for improvement within the principles. In the case where the authors were able to identify potential for improvement, recommendations were made regarding how the Company could act to handle variations in package volume. During the development of the recommendations, the main focus was to identify how these could affect the variations in parcel volume. In addition, as the Company operates in an industry characterized by strong growth and a rapidly changing behavior, trends have continuously been studied to take into consideration how future trends may impact the relevance of the recommendations.

This resulted in that five recommendations could be developed regarding how the Company could take measures to reduce variations in parcel volume and two recommendations regarding how the Company could act to withstand variations in parcel volume. To reduce variations in parcel volume, the Company could exploit diffusely-defined lead times to smooth out parcel volume, apply price strategies to smooth out parcel volume, initiate collaborations with e-retailers with similar culture, eliminate temporary discounts with e-retailers and initiate collaborations with e-retailers offering subscriptions. In order to withstand variations in parcel volume, the Company could develop a platform for sharing campaign information and develop guarantees regarding campaigns with e-retailers.
