Abstract [en]

The speed and complexity in today’s society with unforeseen changes within markets and technology have led to a point where classic methods for development no longer works. This generates in organizations which must work with rapid changes where a functional organization structure is less suitable. This has led to an increase of organizations which experiments with more modern methods and approaches, where Lean and the agile way of working have benefits in flexibility and efficiency.

The purpose of this essay is to investigate a change in the way of working within the organization of Länsförsäkringar Östgöta. The essay relates to a theoretical field that includes working methods within organizations. Theories used are working methods according to Lean, agile, and cross-functional. The theories are used since they can be linked to how organizations work to be able to act based on the rapid and complex changes that take place in today´s society.

A qualitative method and case study are used in the essay to create a deeper understanding of an individual case. Furthermore, semi-structured interviews are used to gather empirical data to build up a basis for analysis, discussion, and conclusion together with the theories.

This essay gives a result and knowledge contribution in form of increased understanding of what happens in an organization when introducing a new more modern way of working. The result shows that the change has led to a more cross functional structure which includes cooperation between departments where the focus is on the bigger picture and the customers perspective. Further does opportunities to focus more on the culture in the organization appear, which includes improvements and development. The result also shows that many times demanding tasks is being more efficient after the change, while the new way of working also is time demanding. Finally, the essay shows expectations for the organizations future to work even more cross functional with more common ways of working, and with a culture which generates that silos and bottlenecks disappears and leads to more efficiency and flexibility.
