Abstract [en]

In surah 17:1 of the Qur'an, the Prophet Muhammad in the span of one night jorneyed from Mecca to Jerusalem. In the hadith Muhammad continued his journey, travelling from Jerusalem to Heaven and then back to Mecca, all on the same night. While the Qur'an does not explain how Muhammad managed to travel so fast, later accounts related that the Prophet was carried on the back of a magic creature called Buraq. This article discusses various representations of Buraq in Islamic art as well as European perceptions of this enchanting creature.
