Abstract [en]

Market growth for biogas solutions is important for climate change mitigation since it enables both effective waste management and a reduction of fossil fuel use. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, based on a discussion on previous research, a categorization of barriers to market growth in biogas solutions is developed. Second, the categorization is used to identify and analyze barriers within the Swedish market. The results show that market growth in Sweden has been reduced by the presence of multiple barriers such as regulatory uncertainties related to taxes and public policy instruments, lack of public funding, lengthy permit and planning processes, increased competition from electrification, lack of communication about biogas benefits, lobbying against biofuels, too high a price on biogas, and fierce competition from fossil fuels. The paper concludes with a discussion of contributions and the managerial and policy implications.
