The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether and how subtitlers can be said to create unique subtitles and whether this uniqueness can be analysed as ’voice’, which is the central theoretical concept. ‘Voice’ should be understood as a metaphor and an interpretive hypothesis where the analysis of the subtitlers' production aims to show various aspects that can be said to constitute an individual subtitler's voice. ’Individual’ is part of a metaphorical use of the voice concept, as many agents influence the translations, and it is therefore relevant to relate to theories of textual and contextual voices. The second main theoretical framework in the dissertation is Swedish subtitling norms.

The primary material in the study consists of Swedish subtitles of the British sitcom Fawlty Towers. Moreover, interviews with two subtitlers were conducted which help broaden the discussion about the subtitler’s voice.

In the dissertation, quantitative analysis of text production is used by analysing technical aspects (the number of subtitles, condensation rate, subtitles per minute). Omissions and additions in subtitling are studied from both quantitative and qualitative perspectives. Solutions to translation problems triggered by dialogue in combination with (studio) audience laughter are analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively.

The results of the dissertation show that it is possible to demonstrate voice in subtitling, which has not been studied before. An additional contribution is the model for describing voice in translation, through so-called voice profiles, which can also be used on other material besides subtitling. The study also contributes to expanding the field of translation history and shows that the reading of subtitles in Sweden is an important part of daily text reading.

Syftet med föreliggande studie är att undersöka om och hur undertextare kansägas skapa unika undertexter och om denna unicitet kan analyseras som ”röst”,vilket är det teoretiska centralbegreppet. ”Röst” förstås här som en metafor ochen tolkningshypotes där analysen av undertextarnas produktion syftar till attvisa på olika särdrag som tillsammans utgör en individuell undertexarröst.”Individuell” är i hög grad del av en metaforisk användning av röstbegreppet, dåmånga aktörer påverkar översättningarna och det är därför relevant att relateratill teori om textuell och kontextuell röst. Det andra huvudsakliga teoretiskaramverket i avhandlingen är svenska undertextningsnormer.

Materialet i studien utgörs av undertexter på svenska av brittiska sitcomserienPang i bygget. Vidare analyseras intervjuer med två undertextare, vilket vidgardiskussionen om undertextarens röst.

I avhandlingen används kvantitativ analys av undertexter genom att tekniskaaspekter analyseras (antalet undertexter, kondenseringsgrad,undertexter/minut). Utelämnanden och tillägg i undertextningen studeraskvantitativt och kvalitativt. Lösningar på översättning triggade av dialog ikombination med (studio)publikens skratt analyseras både kvantitativt ochkvalitativt.

Avhandlingens resultat visar att det går att påvisa röst i undertextning, vilketinte studerats tidigare. Ett ytterligare bidrag är en modell för att beskriva röst iöversättning genom så kallade röstprofiler”, vilka även kan användas på annatmaterial vid sidan av undertexter. Studien bidrar dessutom med att utvidgafältet översättningshistoria samt visar på att läsning av undertexter i Sverige ären viktig del av den dagliga textläsningen.
