6G networks will be highly distributed environments, integrating a diverse set of critical infrastructures and a growing user base, each with unique security requirements. The expected key performance indicators (KPIs) of 6G-faster connectivity, low latency, higher bandwidth, and increased resource efficiency-necessitate significant changes to the existing security landscape, from the architecture to the underlying infrastructure. This article explores a path towards a distributed security architecture and discusses new disruptive technological directions and research challenges for 6G security.
