Equality in Swedish Football : A qualitative analysis of management control systems at the national and regional levels in Sweden (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Previous research has identified a persistent disparity between men’s and women’s teams in Swedish football. Despite decades of societal efforts toward gender equality, existing norms and structural gaps remain from a gender perspective. The lack of studies examining how management control systems contribute to or hinder gender equality within Swedish football motivates this study.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to explore how management control systems contribute to or hinder gender equality within Swedish football.

Method: The study is qualitative with a deductive approach and is based on five-structured interviews. Respondents were selected based on their relevance to the research topic and their involvement in both men’s and women’s football operations.

Conclusions: The findings show that all management control systems performance measurement systems, budgeting, and incentive system can both support and hinder gender equality in Swedish football. We identified that the integration of gender equality aspects into these tools is crucial for achieving practical impact over time. Without clear goals, budgeting strategies, and incentives, gender equality efforts risk remaining a vision rather than becoming a reality. This study contributes with a nuanced insight into how control systems can be formulated with consideration to gender equality within Swedish football.
