Design of a 2-stage closingwheelsystem for planters : A product development study in agricultural mechanics with focus on function, implementation and geometrical design (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The bachelor thesis was carried out on behalf of Väderstad AB. The aim of the project was todevelop concepts for a closing system intended to fit the company’s existing row unit for precisionplanter. The project was initiated due to a need to improve reconsolidation and closure of the seedfurrow during sowing, particularly in clay soils and in direct seeding applications. This need arises from the fact that the existing single-stage system risks causing re-opening of the seed furrow. Inaddition, current closing systems have potential for improvement that could enable better germi-nation conditions for the seed. The requested system should therefore address these issues whilemaintaining a compact design, compatibility with the existing row unit, and the ability to handlestones and crop residues.

The product development methodology applied throughout the project was based on the approaches presented by Liedholm as well as Ulrich and Eppinger. The process included critical problemanalysis, needs and requirements management, functional analysis, concept synthesis, concept testing, and concept selection. In addition, a brainwriting session and a morphological chart were conducted, forming the basis for eight generated concept proposals. These concepts were evaluatedusing the Datum-method and the Absolute-method, as well as through complementary field concepttests. Finally, a system-level design was developed for the concept considered most promising.

The results indicated that concepts incorporating working discs and separate closing wheels had the greatest potential to meet the identified requirements. Consequently, this led to further development of a two-stage closing wheel system. During the development process, the main focus was on geometry, adjustability, and the ability to handle obstacles. Ultimately, the results demonstratethe potential to develop a functional and compact two-stage closing wheel system.
